Just clarifying one point. You mixed up the buds and nodes. Its OK. Mistakes do happen. To err is human.
Be it the shoots or roots , both develop only from the nodal region . That is why while trying to propagate through stem cuttings, one has to ensure that there are at least 2 nodes . One node will be buried in the soil which develops the roots and the one above the soil develops the shoots .
As you say , yes, 6 inches is the standard measurement . However in some varieties, one will find long internodes ( the portion between 2 nodes ). In that case the length of the cutting may vary accordingly .

Normally, desi gulab, chahen wo red ho ya pink ho, stronger hota hai survival mein english gulab ki bajay. Shayad is hi kaaran english gulab ki grafting desi par ki jaati hai, lekin wo desi ki variety alag hoti hai jisme branch ke terminal end par floribunda style mein kai saare pink mini flowers aate hain.
Aapka ye pink gualab desi red gulab ka pink counterpart hai jo northern india mein easily nahi milta.
September se lekar ab January tak main is plant ko kai baar Bardoli Surat ki Green Paradise Nursery se aur Pune ki Plantsguru Nursery se online purchase kar chuka hun lekin over watered red soil mein bheje kuchh plants chal nahi paaye. Kuchh plants grow kar rahe hain kyonki maine nursery owner ke suggestion se over watered red soil root balls ko pot mein rakhkar uske charon or absolutely dry plain garden soil fill kar di. Uske baad plant chal nikla. SAAF Fungicide solution bhi add kiya jab red soil poori tarah se sookh gayi aur uska spray bhi kiya plant par. Abhi us plant ko mujhe properly pot karna hai compost add karke, February mein.
To main problem ye hai ki kya Gujarat/Surat/Bardoli/Pune region mein milne wala ye pink desi gulab kamjor variety ka hai jo bahut zyada environmental change prone hai. Kyonki desi red gulab ko maine hamesha hi sturdy aur strong paya hai, all over India.
Ek pink desi gulab Rajasthan ke Pushkar region ka bhi famous hai jiski petals ka use gulukand banane mein kiya jaata hai.
Kya aapka, Bardoli/Surat ki Green Paradise Nursery wala, Pune Plantsguru wala aur Pushkar Rajasthan wala Pink Desi Gulab ek hi hai ?

Aapse guidance ki ummeed rakhta hun aur online nurseries se mangwaye red soil mein lage in desi pink gulab ko kaise repot karen aur care/maintenance karen, jaankaari chahta hun. Red soil ko fully remove karne par, plant ko bare karne par plant mostly marr jaata hai.

Success is having roots, not seeing the bud opening.
Cuttings have enough nutrition in it to sprout the buds in moist environment. If not roots appear, the buds will use all cutting nutrients and die. So, keep the cuttings in the sil until roots are formed. The intermediate step of keeping the cutting in soil is used in countries with very cold freezing winters where cuttings are stored in ground until spring and then dug out for rooting.

Incidentally, you have interchangeably used the term BUD and NODE. No, they are NOT THE SAME.
A Bud (Kali in Hindi) is from which a flower develops.
A Node (Ankh in Hindi) is from which new shoots sprout and leaves grow.
Now a question:
Is there a reason you didn't remove the thorns? After all they don't serve any useful purpose in the propagation process.
