We keep our dogs outside for exactly this reason: They chase off predators who are after our chickens and peacocks. We lost all of our chickens in one night, then we relocated the coop closer to the house where the dogs can see it. Haven't lost another bird in 7 years after that.

It's amazing how protective dogs can get, without even being trained first. I have a small flock of chickens, and whenever they make a big commotion my dog will race outside to check on them. For a while a couple hawks would show up, land on our fence and just glare at them. Whenever my dog noticed this, should would immediately chase it off, barking at it the entire way. We've never trained her to do any of this. She just understands that the chickens are ours, and that their safety is therefore important. (She also chases our cat off whenever he tries to scratch our furniture. Seriously, I love dogs. XD)
Dogs are territorial by nature. Your property and everything within is their territory. Like most ppl, they don't want anyone messing with their stuff.
@@SvenPrime I wouldn't say that they think EVERYTHING is theirs, just because it's on their "territory". Sometimes, when I play fetch with my dog, the toy will land in a bucket full of stuff, or behind a closed tote, or next to some old junk. Whenever this happens, she's always extremely cautious about it. Not in a "I don't want to hurt myself" way, but rather, in a "I don't think I'm supposed to touch this" sort of way. She usually needs us to give her permission to fetch her toy, before she'll actually do it. Even if there's hardly anything near the toy, and it would be super easy to grab it without disturbing anything. Just the fact that it's "too close" by her own definition, she doesn't want to touch it and risk poking her head somewhere it doesn't belong.
I personally think she's just very aware of the fact that certain things aren't supposed to be touched, bothered or destroyed. Because of that, she doesn't allow animals to make a mess of things. And she includes herself in that list of animals.

It does happen quite often if you're in a more rural place
Where I live it's the same as in this video but with opossums instead of foxes, they climb tree branches and power lines to try getting chickens but the dog's don't them

See I loved three things about this: first was obviously the dog acting like "uhuh you better get out of here BARK BARK!!!", second was the lone chicken quickly joined by the other chickens like "oh girl there's a FOX!" "FOX? uhuh girl we got you come on FOX, what you wanna do?" then third was the cute leaping thing the Fox seemed to be doing near the end as he ran off.
