    I think that the deeper one has necessarily a sound richer with harmonics. That's my preferred.

    The shallow cup was much more aggressive and to the point in the high range while the deeper cup was kinda fuzzy up there.

    The shallower mouthpiece really shines in the mid-upper register. It’s a more brilliant and piercing.

      Agreed. I prefer a deeper cup with a smaller diameter, a strange preference but I get a really nice warm tone while preserving the high and low registers

    Naturally, deeper will help you with your deeper low tones and make it easy for your sound to be mellow and full, and the shallow mouthpiece will give you a shallower, articulate sound that works well in the higher range of the instrument

  • @robcat2075

    The difference is more obvious in the mid range, the characteristic trombone range.

    the deeper one has a richer tone, but the shallow one has slight but noticable tinniness in the lower range and possibly intonation problems in the mid high range (maybe that's just something with the audio) Overall, if you're going for a sharper sound similar to what a lead trumpet player tries to look for in big band, the shallow one is a good pick, especially if you're maintaining mid high range for whatever you're playing. However, in group scenarios it may not be great, as lower instruments tend to have more variety in terms of range and for tone goals especially in a concert or orchestral setting. Hope this helped a little

    I think the v cup makes the trombone sound brighter and more sharp almost like a trumpet sound

    Terrific. I'm bouncing myself between a Wedge 108g Gen2 with .280" throat and the same with a .300" throat. Needless to say, this is on a bass trombone.
    The narrower throat produces normally a more immediate (what some call "efficient") sound, that favours pointed articulations. The wider throat produces a broader, darker sound which favors legato ("la" or no tonguing). The higher register speaks a bit easier on the narrower throat, thinking of "The Creation" here. Bruckner and Mahler arpeggios into the trigger register seem more stable with less shift on the wider throat.
    In you case, the shallower cup is not nice to hear in mine to low range - the deeper cup of course is thinner up top. One reason on my tenor I went with a Wedge 4G over a 5G or 5GS. Of course I'm more of an orchestral and quartett guy, not so much jazz or Big Band.

    I'm just seeing this video now, but I just switched to a shallower mouthpiece and have never been happier with my sound. I agree, bigger mp's have a less exciting sound in general. I currently play on a Marcellus mp nowadays from a Hammond 11ml.

    I think you also need to find the right mouthpiece for the right horn. A deep cup can sound great on a big horn, but it loses clarity on a small horn. A small cup can sound biting and clean on a small horn, but that same mouthpiece will sound thin and small on a big horn.

    • @LowBrassLuke
      @LowBrassLuke  Рік тому

      True. Each horns responds better with a mouthpiece that fits it better.

    I think that the deeper mouthpieces are better for low notes and are fuzzy on high notes, but the shallow mouthpieces help to play the high notes with a better sound.

    Well of course I’m 66 years old now but when I wasYounger I played trombone throughout junior high band and then majored in music in high school and played professionally up to about 30 years old but I also picked up the bass in that became my main instrument as trombone players were shut down his trailer were in the eighth in the 70s of course in Philadelphia sounds but I wanted up getting into guitar and bass but when I played I can remember but when I played I used a 6 1/2 a L cup my opinion of the chew sounds is the cup has a nice sounds I feel the second mouthpiece which was the street and to me it almost sound like this is gonna sound right but I feel it’s leaning towards a trombone sounding like a trumpet-ish sound squeezing it i’m not having that round fullness of the trombone. Just my opinion when I was in school I played trombone I also played baritone and I used to play some trumpet by ear so I’m totally familiar with grass instruments and I feel the cup mouthpiece has a forest sound and I just feel the street mouthpiece I’m not gonna use the word cheaper soundbite I guess that’s what I am going to use I feel like it’s taking the quality away from thatTrombone as it say 85% cup sound with a 15% trumpet combined it just seems when you go onto the higher range it’s just loses The fullness. PS I think you’re an amazing trombonistAnd I think that you’re reading skills are outstanding really beyond outstanding lol I can imagine how many years of practice it took for you to master the trombone I enjoy your videos

    The deeper cup has a thicker overall sound but looses the pizazz in the front of the note that the shallow cup has. Deeper cup is better for a pure sound (but less flexible and thus more boring) shallow is better for ear catching sound (more brilliant and stylistic).

    • @LowBrassLuke
      @LowBrassLuke  Рік тому +1

      That’s a great description. One of my biggest issues with deeper cup mouthpieces is how much more “boring” they sound. I always prefer using shallower pieces on all my horns. It gets a little tricky on bass trombone because I don’t want to lose the ease of the pedal register. Can’t go too shallow.

  • @keithshockley3443
    @keithshockley3443 4 місяці тому

    The deeper cup sounds more fuller and resonant while the shallower mouthpiece sounds more sharp and bright. What’s iconic is that the more shallow mouthpieces on trombone have a more baritone horn and euphonium appearance to them. Btw, Trombones, baritone and euphoniums all use similar size mouthpiece despite that difference shapes and bore sizes. 😂😂😂

    I hear the shallow cup sound with less resonance than the deep one, like a dryer sound

    • @LowBrassLuke
      @LowBrassLuke  Рік тому

      Interesting. I hear and feel the opposite. The shallower cup for me has a more brilliant sound. That’s the piece I use on all my current videos when I use my small bore trombone.

    • @josuevalar6465
      @josuevalar6465 Рік тому +1

      @@LowBrassLukeyes, that's what i meant xD. When i said less resonant i meant that the sound doesn't stay as much when you end the note. With the deep one i feel like it has a fuller sound, much warmer

    • @LowBrassLuke
      @LowBrassLuke  Рік тому

      @@josuevalar6465 a lot of people say that which is interesting. I always hear deeper pieces as being more hollow and lacking in sound. But again I’m coming from a different sound concept. Even on my larger tenor and bass I prefer pieces that are not super deep. More “commercial” sounding perhaps.

  • @johnsimpsen5
    @johnsimpsen5 Рік тому +1

    Shallow is good for jazz, deeper is better for literally anything else and still good on jazz.
    Also keep in mind the bore size of your instrument. That one looks like a small bore from what I can see.

    • @LowBrassLuke
      @LowBrassLuke  Рік тому

      It’s definitely more complicated than that. Neither is better and both have their applications. It really depends on what sound you want to get for what ensemble you are playing. You can you deeper pieces for jazz sometimes and also shallower pieces for other types of music besides jazz. My trombone is actually a 500-525 bore horn so it plays much bigger than you would expect.

      Bass trombones require larger sizes. There are specific mouthpiece sizes designed for bass trombone. The 1.5G is the most common.

    idk how to say it but the shallower one sounds more, "restricting" than the deeper one.

    • @LowBrassLuke
      @LowBrassLuke  Рік тому

      I can see how you could hear it that way. For me the big difference is in the core of sound. The shallower piece give me more brilliance and core throughout the horn.

    Do you change mouthpiece based on the part or range? Shallow for highest part? Deep for lower parts

    • @LowBrassLuke

      I use one mouthpiece per instrument (small tenor, bass trombone, euphonium and so on). I’ll bring that instrument that fits the gig. Small bore for Jazz/rock/pop, large bore for band/orchestra and so on.
