Tenants facing eviction despite paying rent

- Toronto tenants are pushing back against eviction notices from new ownership. Mark McAllister speaks with frustrated renters who say the evictions from Golden Equity Properties are unjustified, and tours the building in desperate need of maintenance.
Golden Equity sounds like slum landlords with no repairs to their property and absentee landlords in that they are never available for person to person consultation on rental issues. Even their lawyer is not available for consultation in regards to eviction notices filed with the Tenant & Landlord Act offices in Hamilton, Ontario.

If that doesn't tell you anything already, I don't know what will.
greed
These are peoples homes. That’s ignorant, as though the corporation is trying to get rid of them so that it can raise the rent.
Yup. That's a pretty classic move, there are a bunch of movies about this sort of thing. 😒
@GNR 1978 FOREVER it shouldn’t be allowed then it should be under public ownership
No its not there home, its a place they rent.
Not their home, it’s someone else’s home. This is the gamble with renting.
@@dcg590 home is not a gamble this is capitalism no one needs more than one home. Since housing is an issue you would think communities look after their communities, and instead dog eats dog, which has nothing to do with intelligence.
Thanks for coming on CityNews to tell us about Golden Equity Properties.
The government just going to sit and do nothing? We need homes and we have amoung the largest land amoung countries. Tax the rich and give us land.
* Tax the rich _more._ Many _do_ pay taxes, but far less than what they're supposed to.
Government is sitting on the richest land in all of the world, ancient oceans created vast amounts of natural resources.
@@MikeJohnson-tv8dd And they are just squandering it
@@quantumhelium Why must we export our resources to the dependent provinces that waste it all.
@@user-vn7ce5ig1z wrong. They pay about 42% of ALL taxes in this country. Do some research. Just because someone has more money than you why should they pay more than what is legal?
i would find out were management lived
So sad

As a renter, you leave yourself open to what the owners want to do with their property. Buy your own home if you want to live somewhere forever.
That would require personal accountability and sacrifice. Today's kryptonite.
While this is true, you don’t know an individual’s personal circumstances.
• 1:40 - They try to force them to set their rent to pre-authorized payments? 🤨 That's "sus af" as the kids say, a huge red-flag. NEVER set pre-authorized payments for something you don't trust, especially if you're on a tight budget. If they suddenly jack up the price one month without notice, it could not only drain your account, it could also cause all of your other expenses to bounce and cascade you with NSF fees.
• 2:17 - They refuse to speak and their legal counsel says "no comment". 🚩🚩🚩 Time to get your own lawyers. ¬_¬
• 2:40 - It's simple. Just stay. What are they going to do, call the police to try to forcibly evict them? Bring it on, that's the kind of bad press that takes corporations down.
• 2:47 - Like I said, they should cut off pre-authorized payments ANYWAY. With a company this scummy, you obviously can't trust them to not take far more than they're supposed to. Pay the rent manually, and _only_ manually. That way, you control how much they get, so they can never take more without notice.
@GNR 1978 FOREVER That is AFTER they have been robbed.
People on disability or single parents and others elderly are being told that homes are going up for sale being remodeled to raise the rent while people face homelessness no income increases to pay the ridiculous rent prices. Families will be living in snowbanks!!
Whats a snow bank?
Yup.
if the building is so bad and TERRIBLE why do they want to be there?
Am I the only who noticed the storage room is the office ? Anyone? Helllloooo!!!!
Welkome to Kanuckistan.

I am going through a big Renoviction story that's is the worst of them all.
I have a Real Estate Agent hiding behind an Ontario Inc# who wished to remain anonymous and he hired a property manager to squeeze out all he tenants by saying it was a Demolition. Only 2 of us remain in the building. Now they got permits granted focused only on our apartments to try to squeeze us out. They had no inspectors here, fire, electrical, health safety to justify the permits. They want to just decrease our apartment size into a 2 bedroom now instead of 1 without increasing any square footage. They are just doing this to ADD VALUE at our expense. I have been here for 20 years and this Real estate wants everyone out so he can have a higher evaluation upon reselling freshly to a new owner to set his own rates. He won't even stagger the work and let me live in the rear until my apartment is ready. He also thinks I will have to pay higher rent at a %250 increase! Please help a fellow Ontario citizen.
It's not your property, you are renting. Get out and find a new place
When is anyone gonna stop big companies/corporate business from running this world into the ground. We need to find out who owns these companies and cut off the head of the snake.
Isn't that Justin Trudeau that never taxes the rich but us poor people.
Take Video and Call Police - on hand. Keep Fighting 💪💪💪
This is sad
pre-authorized rent payments is the epitome of predatory billing practices. I won't even do pre-authorized for any subscriptions and certainly not my rent! This is not OK under any circumstances. Change your bank account if you have to; can't imagine how or if one would be billed when they move out and expect a deposit back. I collect rent the old fashion way and try not to take cash if I don't have to... Keeps everyone honest and in communication with tenant and myself. When a renter pays rent in person it is usually when a renter will bring up something that needs fixed before it turns into a big expense.
Does anyone know if according to the new bill "compensation" and last month's rent is considered the same thing. I'm being evicted and I don't understand this point.
Power to the people
I heaving all kind of problems with this owner on Keele St. They are keep flooding me from above (from level 9) not just the bath-room, in the living-room, at bed-room, behind the entrance door, everywhere the walls are wet, moldy, actually the whole apartment full of toxic mold and smell. I do developed a mold allergy because of that. They drilled holes true the ceiling to do this dirty work. Please I beg I need help, they are killing me with mold, totally destroying my health. If someone knows where I can get help please do not hesitate to write. More than 3 years I suffer because of these type of harassment's! Thank you
Where was CODE ENFORCEMENT to address the needed repairs before they became construction/ rehab issues ..🤔 Property management companies have become legal housing SHARKS.
Structural violence is what it is but it is ignored deliberately.

The new buyer wants to raise rent but can't because of laws so they just evict them so they can raise rents. The renters are paying the same $ amount in rent for a decade and because of inflation it isnt enough for the landlord.
Would you, like to to be told how much money you’re allowed to make? Being a property owner is a business. Not a charity. Why are landlords expected to take losses and not profit while every other business in this nation isn’t? Don’t like it? Can’t afford it? Move
Renovictions are also a big problem now.
No, eviction moratorium was the problem. The losses were catastrophic for landlords, time to make them up.
golden equity properties is good company???
Thats illegal you cant evict someone on the false pretense that they havent paid their rent If I were those tenants I'd get all of us to go in on a lawsuit together teach those fuckers a lesson.
They mess over them tenants
Don't worry. They're gonna develop Downsview base for more affordable housing.
They probably stole money
Ask the investor group if they think that homelessness and starvation produces happy happy afterlives in the sky. They probably won't reply to that related question though. Greedy manipulation defines the disingenuous.
Greed is their end all be all purpose in life
Keep been wicked
Move why live there no renters no income golden equity goes bankrupt....
Y
Yall. Seems nothing yetthink we just having much lag earthquakes and stones and hurricane You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
I believe its illegal to reno-vict tenants from buildings that are 10 stories and up. As a tenant you got first dibs...is that right guys?
@GNR 1978 FOREVER no dude, here in Trawna you have a RIGHT to move into the renovated unit at the same rent you had before. I knew you werent a Hogtowner :/
@GNR 1978 FOREVER well dude, here in Toronto upon proper notification, you have the legal RIGHT to move back into your unit at the SAME rental amount after the renovations have been completed. Thats the law!
@GNR 1978 FOREVER NOICE!!!
The landlord has to collect and pay their mortgage as well so they don't get foreclosed on. . If the tenant can not afford it they should find a cheaper place etc. But I do understand that it is tough out there with Covid and all. Sad situation
Quit whining tenants! The owners can do whatever they want to do with the property.
Have mercy on your y'all soul
Yall seems nothing yet
Get your gun fam defend your property
Are you a catholic? Shootings never produce afterlives, don't be violent, a catholic threatened to arson my atheist parents Toronto home even.
sit down Davey Crockett, turn off yer XBOX.
Not their property lol
Not this property.
Shame Shame on y'all
Does that make any sense?.
They want them out, then they can renovate and jack up the rents, or tear down the property and put up something more profitable.
Yes it does make sense.
@@Johnny_Doe explain how if the rent is paid and they dont have an outstanding debt on the property?.
@@user-vg8ox3he1i its probably because of the vx.
@@user-vg8ox3he1i but they should tell the reason why, its not just giving eviction notice with no reason..that's ridiculous..
Lol rekt
Trudeau to blame for everything
Lol Doug Ford is the one who nixed rent control and made the eviction process easier even virtual for Landlords who don't even have problem tenants they just want them out so they can rent their place for a higher market rent. Trudeau has no jurisdiction over housing policies of the provinces.
