    I recently bought 2 x DS4246 and they work great! Compared with the USB expanders and what not I was using before, the DS4246 is just sooo much easier and, well, it just works. I got them for $230 each, which is a great price for my area (on eBay EU, people are charging around $760+shipping for them!). I also bought a DS2246 (that's the 24 bay x 2.5" version) that I'm very excited about to put to work. Can't wait to get rid of the last external USB devices.

      These are great shelves at the right price, and suprisingly quiet. Does the space at the front of the caddy allow for better airflow?

      @@DigitalSpaceport I don't think so. I always thought the 3D printet caddy looks to give better airflow due to all the holes, however they might be there just to save printing material. The front of the Netapp caddy only allows for one air intake and that's the square hole to the right of where the release button for the caddy locking mechanism is. It's about 1.5" x 1.5" so I don't think it allows for a lot of airflow. Of course the locking arm doesn't give an airtight seal, so all the gaps also allows for air to pass through there, but overall, not a lot of airflow.
      Now that I think about the, the restricted airflow might actually be by design. Air, just like water, is "lazy", it will take the path of least resistance. If, say, 10 caddies had large enough holes to "feed" the fan(s) 100% of the air it could move, that would mean there are 14 bays with no airflow. Better to restrict the airflow to force air to pass through all 24 caddies..

    As I mentioned in a previous comment, I bought a 4246 and now that it's been running it is great. Additionally, I stumbled across the NetApp DS4486 and was wondering if it was a viable alternative to using two NetApp 4246's. Any thoughts on power consumptions, etc.? I am currently using SATA drives so the fact that the NetApp DS4486 is SATA only is not an issue for me.

    Was noise mentioned? I see it in the title and I caught the bit about running two PSUs for best noise & power consumption, but didn't hear (pun intended) the actual noise output mentioned.

      Ah check this video for a much better demo of the noise levels ua-cam.com/video/UT4auH8uoho/v-deo.html

    Nice review. Where did you get your server rack from? I'm struggling to find any used ones that are reasonably priced locally around here.

      Locally on Craigslist. I'm lucky to be in Austin which has a lot of surplus dell gear used.

    What is the procedure to properly shutdown netapp? 1. Unmount drive and shutdown server then Can I poweroff netapp (unplug from power). ? I don't want to hurt the drive.

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Рік тому

      You have it there. Unmount the disks (or shutdown the system) and wait for 5-7 mins. Then Power off at the switches on the back or PDU.

    Hi, by any chance do you know if the Adaptec ASR-5445 card works with the DS4246 ? or what pci raid controller would work with it? Thx

    I haven't tried it, but I have the DS4246, and wanted to know if it's possible to hot plug it? Can I turn it back on with the server running? I've always shutdown just to be safe, but if it's possible to not do that it would save a lot of hassle. Thanks!

      @DigitalSpaceport  2 роки тому

      You can hotplug the netapp ds4246 sleds. Please unmount them first of course.

      @@DigitalSpaceport I meant the actual unit from the server. If my server is on can I power on the netapp, or does it HAVE to be on prior to server startup?

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  2 роки тому

      It should just power up and present the disks. Should work like that for windows or nix. Just dont shut it down hard and mounted and you should be okay.

      @jessesissom 2 роки тому

      @@DigitalSpaceport I turned off the PSUs cause I'm trying to save electricity. All the stuff on there is not terribly important and not needed often, so I wanted to have it completely powered down, but I had always completely shut down the server it's attached to and then turned the shelf on and waited for it to power up all the drives before I turned the server on. I thought I read somewhere it had to be powered up prior to server bootup.

      If you have the pcm8003 qsfp based card it can present problems in unraid. If you have a more standard lsi external hba like a 9211-8e mine works seemlessly.

    I was offered one of these for free filled with 3tb drives. I'm trying to figure out what I need to get this connected to my Windows 11 PC. I was looking at your links and it sounds like I need the HBAS installed on my OC and sas cable from my PC to the shelf.
    I guess depending on the HBAS, that would manage the raid or would I use Windows Storage Spaces to manage the drives?

      QSFP to QSFP. These are the ones I use. Netapps branded ones are fairly cheap vs other "new" ones off amazon. geni.us/QSFP_to_QSFP_x10

    Hi guys, forgive my ignorance as I've never had anything to do with any server hardware before, I'm here in the UK looking at buying a NetApp DS4243 NAJ-0801 24x SAS Bay 2x IOM3 Controllers + PSU STORAGE Array. Does this contain a PC etc in it or is it purely a "HDD holder" if I need to connect it to a "PC" Does it need to be anything specific other than having a SAS controller card ? Thanks guys

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  2 роки тому +1

      Just an HDD holder and yes you need tge SAS controller in the description or similar. Try to get the hdd caddies also with it.

      So it depends on which PSU's you have. There are 2 versions. ua-cam.com/video/UT4auH8uoho/v-deo.html in this video I go over all the measurements with various configs of the PSU's. There are the less efficient models. You save about 15w with the more efficient ones. A video on this will be out soon when I upgrade my shelves to 60 disk trays.

    Quick Question. I'm trying to get an Adaptec 8885 to work with this but it is not detecting the array. The array is detected by an lsi hba. I'd use the lsi but I want to make 2 disk raid arrays and the lsi card for whatever reason does not allow me to add new raid configurations after the initial setup. Thoughts?

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Рік тому

      9207-8e is THE card you want to use. Not used that Adaptec ever but I only go with 9207-8e myself now for good reasons.

    What size drives will these take? I don’t want older tech that taps out at 2TB or 4tb drives… :(. Especially when 16TB and 20TB drives exist now. Not looking to Chia mine… looking for a inexpensive enterprise NAS build.

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  2 роки тому +4

      I have 16TB drives in mine. These NetAPP SAS HBA's are neutral to disks and just pass thru to whatever the controller can handle so like a LSI 9200-8e will allow any size drive.

      The NetAppds4246/3 are back down in price, but not fully returned to pre chia prices. The 60 disk NetApp de6600's are way down cheaper then before however and that's sas3 and better wattage efficiency. Saw them for 750 with trays, psus and blowers

    So you're not being sponsored by these cranberry juice ppl, that rolls before your video? Then where is the money going, and who are the other Chia Pet folks?
    I mean, I saw your ad, I saw all these ads, but I still don't understand anything.
    If all these people are going to be here anyway, at least they could start cross-selling for each other.
    Can someone buy you?
