This is the kind of racing that draws enthusiasts in, and is so compelling to watch! If only the sporting regulations and manufacturers realized the closer the cars resemble what is sold on the dealerships, the more you can relate. This particular era, with the same base engines from a few manufacturers being used for the F2 (Kit car) rallying was a reasonably contained expense. Let alone having the variety of inline 4 cylinder, 5 cylinders, and even 6 from BMW, Ford's V6... The noises are so easy to spot in so many cases... Also, the rahter large (by-then, at least) wheel size, plus the short-stroke suspension made for a spectacular looks, as well as dicey handling, which makes for fantastic racing. Yes, there was tons of fender-benders, but for an average viewer, as messed up as that is, that is part of their interest in the sport. But after that initial phase, you learn to enjoy the actual racing. We could really learn from this era, and try to get back into this kind of racing.
Sadly the big brother mentality of today leads to strict regulatory practices . Hence gruppe B rally and all the excitement of super tourer classes were BRUTAL door to door racing. The best ever was 90s super tourers
I was there! My girlfriend at the time and myself waited for the security guard to pop off to the loo and managed to sneak through the tunnel into the paddock!
Two Donnington memories I'll never forget: F1 Donnington 93. Ayrton Senna in an underpowered McLaren, on a wet track serenely sails round Karl Wendlinger on the Craner curves. BTCC Donnington 98. John Bintcliffe in a four wheel drive Audi, in the dry, serenely sails off the Craner curves, collecting daisies as he went...
I never saw this when I was young, but played Toca 2 on PC years later. Shame that game didn't have the independents like Matt Neal though. Interesting race here as well.
Deadmetal I can’t relate to the cars today they don’t sound right or look right, they look too heavy and soft when cornering. It’s still some of the best racing out there though
These cars were just so much more exiting, the current BTCC is great in terms of numbers and championship but the current cars look so slow and less exiting in comparison to these rocketships but that unfortunately was part of the demise they got so complex and expensive wasn't sustainable.

Good memories! ESPN 2 would have touring car racing at 1-2 am on a Wednesday. I used to stay up for it as a kid.

nissan primera ,honda accord, ford mondeo, renault laguna, peugeot 406, audi a4 alfa romeo 156, all in gran turismo 2 , not have a volvo..

Yes. 1997 was the last season Audi was allowed to run 4WD A4s.
This was really touring car racing with mutch noise and petrol smell. I saw them on Salzburg ring stw in 1998

No, the weight penalties for finishing on the podium onto started in 2000.
why would you loose oil if you dont have a front bumper :S
Because these cars have external front mounted oil-coolers, probably got damaged when thebumper was crushed
