    I have an 06 and still enjoy driving it, I have never had so many casual conversations over an auto before. You, sir, have the patience of Jobe, I would have lost my temper long before you finally (I hope) solved the problem. My little diesel is still sound all these years later.

    THAT WAS SO HELPFUL!! Thank you for posting this. Our smart died on us one day and we had it towed to a shop we knew in NYC and the guy said the actuator was burnt! You just saved our new actuator. Can you post more videos?? we are new care owners and are trying to learn and save money in a DYI way.

      Nicole Whitman When I made the video, I thought it would be worth it if I could help even one person. (Plus it was satisfying to rant at some German engineers, in their own language, no less!)
      Thanks for your feedback. I have one other video, but it relates to a problem with a Ford pick-up. (This must be a rare problem, as this other video has not even hit 100 views.)
      There won't be any more Smart Car videos, unless someone gives me one for free. I would never buy another one, or any other M-B product as long as I live in this town. The local dealer service department is, in my opinion, just plain horrible.
      Keep in mind that I am a general machinist, and not a licensed motor vehicle mechanic. My tips are the result of "thinking outside the box", and not based on extensive experience with cars.

  • @Split10uk

    I had this intermittent problem, and did some of the things you said, but it still happened on occasions. This went one over a fair few months, but after much messing (restarting moving car etc) I always made it home.
    Took car to local Smart dealer as it was becoming a joke....he put it on diagnostics, and detected a faulty brake light switch.
    Had a new switch fitted, and not had one issue since! (a month in)

      I'm glad it solved the problem for you, and glad your mechanic was able to get to the bottom of the problem promptly.

    • @Split10uk
      @Split10uk 7 років тому +2

      Well I'm back to this thread and I wish I wasn't.
      Cars was fine for 10 months after new switch, then in August I couldn't get reverse on one occasion...restart cured that, but it was a sign of things to come.
      Just every now and then...say 2 miles to shop...20 mins shopping back to car...no reverse...but again after restarts etc i can make it home, but it progressively got worse over next few weeks so back to garage.
      They couldn't find a fault, but suggested upgrading the software....that seems better, but it's not fixed the problem. (foot on brake..put in reverse....N light just blinks).
      This problem seems to rear its ugly head after its rained...so I am wondering whether I have a damp problem.
      Quick question to others...when you park do you leave your car in Reverse?

    Thank you for the info. I have a 2012 with 10K miles. This reverse issue has been going on for over 2 years. I finally noticed that my car's reverse issue regularly acts up after I use manual mode (tiptronic / paddle shift) in bumper to bumper traffic. I'll stop using paddle shift altogether and see if that appeases the transmission.
    Parking in my neighborhood is difficult but not with a smart ... with a functioning reverse.
    Quick history of my interactions with dealership. MB told me the clunk into reverse might be engine mounts... last year. This year and $1,500 of sensors and adjustments later they said transmission was fine. Last week I recreated this problem for mechanic and MB kept it for 2 days. Their solution was I that needed a new transmission at $3,000.
    I am vexed because this is my second smart but I must be a fool because I will buy another one. But for now I'll keep my $ and apply your tips.

      Thankyou for the heads up. So far I haven't had that issue. But from time to time the traction fault light comes on and the gears will not change at all till I turn the car off and then turn the ignition on while pumping the brakes. But again thanks for your help. Ever since you've shown where to live the actuator those other issues stopped. Good day to you too!

    Note that that unlike the clutch on a fully manual transmission, the Smart clutch actuator should not have any free play. In fact, the clutch adjustment specification calls for the release mechanism to be pre-loaded by 10 newtons (using a spring balance on the actuator). The clutch itself contains a self adjusting mechanism that keeps the bite point fairly consistent as the friction plate wears.

    • @arnokilianski5659
      @arnokilianski5659  9 років тому +4

      O.k., I stand corrected. The car works the way I adjusted it, though.
      My reasoning at the time was twofold:
      1) The problem with the transmission was worst under hot conditions. The push rod between the actuator and clutch is plastic, and most plastics expand like crazy when heated. Compensation for this expansion means moving the actuator away from the clutch housing, i.e. increasing free play.
      2) Most electric motors draw a huge amount of current if they have to start from the stopped condition under load. Increasing free play should allow the motor to start spinning in the unloaded state, thereby reducing the starting current to a level that hopefully will not cause the motor controller to generate an alarm signal. ("Clutching at straws", I admit.)
      In hindsight, there may well have been 10 (or more) newtons of pre-load by the time I was finished. Lacking the appropriate tools and knowledge, I can only guess. I readily admit that a proper measurement is almost always better than a guess.
      The fact remains that the dealership and a highly reputable and licensed garage failed to get all the bugs out of the vehicle. I succeeded. This is not to imply that I (a machinist with a marine engineering diploma) am smarter that any automotive mechanic, but rather that my relative ignorance forced me to "think outside the box".

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis 9 років тому +1

      To be fair plenty of people have adjusted them like a manual clutch i.e. introduced a small amount of free play, and the clutch still seems work ok. However there must be a reason for the preload, possibly something to do with the self adjusting mechanism in the clutch?
      The actual procedure that Sachs advise is to put 50N of preload on the clutch actuator, operate the clutch a number of times (e.g. 10-20 times) and then reduce the preload to 10N.

      You seem to be an intelligent person, why did you not take car to a proper smart dealership and have looks at you problem rather than going to run of the mill transmission shop who, by the sounds of it had know idea what they were doing, and we're not for iliac with this type of vehicle and you probably paid for work you did not need and still had the same problem after.

      The car had just been to the dealer for service, and a safety inspection. They missed this problem and numerous others, even though they kept the car for a week, and ran up a large bill. i have this problem and it's happening more often. i assumed it was because my ABS/ESP is forked up (reluctor ring(s) cracked, causes ABS to freak out and quit after a few feet) i can go into D from a stop, but sometimes either from park or after driving it won't go into R. so i always back into parking spots. when it does refuse to go into R, i drive it forward a foot or two, stop and then it will go into R. i may try lubing down next to the airbox. it's an annoyance, always clears up with a few seconds of jiggling around. thanks!

    Lithium grease in the sleeve under the bellows is not the problem as nothing touches in there, It is the actuator itself drop off the plastic cover and put the correct grease in the mechanism there.

      I don't actually show the shift actuator in this video. At around the 1:55 mark I am reaching under the air intake ducting and removing a white plastic cap. There is no other white cap that resembles this on the vehicle that I know of. This cap covers an air vent on the shift actuator, which is a good place to squirt in some lube.
      Later in the video, I show the clutch actuator, from underneath the engine. This is a different mechanism, but it can also benefit from a shot of lube, or, if you're really ambitious, remove it for complete disassembly, clean & lube. Here's a video I like on the topic (but I recommend a slightly different approach in my video):ua-cam.com/video/xLl1NTAPA_E/v-deo.html

    Over fifteen thousand views, and I'm willing to bet that the engineers at M-B are still denying that there is a problem! Either that, or they're trying to fix it by re-writing the controller software. (That takes brains: Allow the shift motor to draw more current, rather than ask why it's encountering so much resistance!)

      Arno Kilianski I went to my local tysinger, and they screwed me over. saying that the car needs a new computer, but even after installing the new computer, now the idiot decides that it is the clutch, in which I kept telling him. he kept pushing the computer because my sister brought the car there not knowing what was wrong with it, and they were just looking to cash in on her confusion. When I called, the rep said he wasn't sure what the problem was, but kept pushing the damn computer onto me. When I asked him, how can he tell me what my car needs when he claims he does not know what the problem is, and he hung up. Yes, you also hit the nail on the head.

    Just sorted mine, no brake lights on won't allow you to select gears because the ecu thinks you don't have the brakes on. Undo front undertray you will find a black plastic box ahead of the servo, this unclips easy and change the switch, Voila sorted. This is probably why Smarts cut out.

    What this car really needs is a computer update. Smart car this is not! I found this to be a safety issue that is very expensive to fix. NOT SAFE when you can not control the car when you need too. Not engaging in gear may not always be a problem but when you find yourself sitting in the road with cars coming at you then you have a problem. Make a report at Safecar.gov you may have to call them I had to because the VIN and make wasn't even in their system although I believe they fixed it when I called. Which is probably the only reason it hasn't been recalled yet. Nobody has time to fight for themselves until someone dies! So please make the report Safecar.gov because Smart Car denies all and is not going to willingly admit their is a problem even when you tell them.

    • @arnokilianski5659

      +Emily Adkins The web address is www.safercar.gov/. There are actually a half dozen or so complaints about this problem on the site already. I've bookmarked the site, and am sure that I will find it to be interesting and useful, even though I live in Canada (outside of U.S. gov't jurisdiction), so, thanks for the info.

    • @eprice6660
      @eprice6660 9 років тому

      Thank you I have made the report with safecar.gov but they are going to need a lot more people to complain about it or maybe someone die before they are willing to admit they have a problem. But people need to see this as a safety issue. At first it didn't really bother me enough because it wasn't an all the time that the car has the problem, but after this one experience I see this as a big problem.

    • @cesarhof6577
      @cesarhof6577 5 років тому

      You are correct, it is a safety issue and it needs to be recalled, a service bulletin from Mercedes was sent to all Mercedes dealers about this computer glitch! I was having the same issues with my smart for two car. not engaging into gears, leaving me stuck in a very busy blvd, hoping not to get killed. last straw was when I put my car into D gear and the car went into reverse! .
      I called the dealer who services the smart cars, and the service manager ,acted as he had no clue what was wrong with it? I told him I had done the research and 40 Smart car owners with the same issues, was not a coincidence, and it was computer malfunction,
      when he returned the call , he said he ran the diagnostic report,and the car tires were woren down and drivers seat belt did not click in, and he would be doing the computer update, the cost was $205.00! to do that! my question is? why should I have to pay for the update on a manufacture defect ? he said somebody has to pay his mechanics! that's b.s. it takes no more than 30 mins. to connect computer and install software up date, no mechanic required only to push start button . thanks for the info on reporting car safety issues.

    After spraying lithium in the rights spots it tell me in the dash that gears were getting into. But before the spray it wasn’t. So right now I still have the same problem, i rev it and it doesn’t get moving even through it says so in the dash. But it doesn’t gear reason it won’t move. When putting the switch to on, before turn it on, The noise that makes before to need it on it doesn’t make it normal. So I don’t know who is the motor to move the gears, the clutch actuator, or the transmission oil.

    I'm in Australia with the same problem for 2 years, just been fudging it to get it into reverse(wait till revs go down then "quickly" shift into reverse)...I've tried everything except new clutch or software - I've greased the actuator, greased what this guy says, repositioned the actuator, now replaced the actuator with a new one and i've still got the problem!
    Can not get a dealer to update the software(we only have one in Adelaide) not shaw if we have the same software here but every time I've asked no one can answer the question..I guess the number of smarts sold here is very small compared to else where so they don't care!!
    Has anybody in Australia managed to get there software updated to fix this issue...??
    It is really frustrating and dangerous..

      As far as I've been able to ascertain, the software upgrade sends more current to the shift actuator. In other words, it is the electronic equivalent of using a bigger hammer. Much smarter to try and figure out why the actuator needs more current than anticipated to do its job. Could the root of the problem be insufficient or deteriorated lubricant? This would be my suggestion.

    Hope this helps us. Our Smart quit shifting as we got home from towing it 400 miles behind our motorhome. 1) This company is owned by MB, but is built in France, not Germany. Not that it would make much difference. You get what you pay for! 2) It was began in the mid 2000's by a Swedish watch maker, not MB.

    Thanks for the video :) I have one question. In some other platforms or videos, people claim that this issue occurs because people do not push the brake pedal when they are changing between N, R and D. Is it the case? Because in many semi-automatic cars you need to push the brake pedal when changing the gear. Pushing the brake pedal sends a signal to the ECU that changing the gear is safe at the moment. For example, before I had a Mitsubishi Colt, and the working principle was the same. Could you please answer? I am considering buying a Smart, but this issue bugs me. Thanks in advance.

      +Denizhan Karaca I'm strong (second degree black belt) and this problem occurred no matter how hard I pushed down on the brake pedal.
      Yes, I agree that this safety feature is a good idea, and may have lead some people to falsely believe that something was wrong with their cars, but, in the case of this particular car, I considered and eliminated this possibility.

      No. Not only is there this problem, but service from the local Benz dealer is horrible. Also, there are many cars today which offer more room, and fuel economy equal or better than the Smart. The only reason I can see to get a Smart is to tear it down and build a trike, like they used to do with the air-cooled VW Beetle!

    When you broke open the Clutch Actuator and lubed, what type of grease did you use or did you just sprayed with WD-40?? Thanks.

    • @MegaSoulbro
      @MegaSoulbro 4 роки тому

      Lithium grease, WD-40 does a lithium grease, it comes in a yellow and black tin instead of yellow and blue.
      The only thing I don't understand is the grease is meant for lubricating metal and the clutch actuators components are plastic.
      It worked for some so I guess it works. Good luck

      +Eugeni Muller I am not a professional mechanic, and have only worked on this one Smart Car. My video shows you how to lubricate two of the motor mechanisms attached to the clutch and transmission. Follow these steps, and then drive the vehicle for ten or twenty km of city driving (which will force these two mechanisms to work a lot, and spread the fresh lube around). The mechanics who worked on this car before me don't seem to know about this, which is why I made this video. I, on the other hand, don't know much about the rest of the Smart Car, or about the gear shift mechanisms that Smart may have used in other years or other countries. If my tips don't work, or if your car doesn't seem to have the components that I show in my video, then I can't help you ; sorry.

  • @MObileGymFitness

    Same issue here. I've been lubing the actuator on average, once every couple months and it usually works. This time, it hasn't. I sprayed grease in the motor by the airbox, and am about to move the actuator position further away from the clutch.
    Question: how do you know how far back to move it? I see from your video that you are about 4 notches away from the far edge of the slot. How did you figure out this is where it would work? I don't want to mess up the position.
    Thanks in advance, your tips rock!

    • @arnokilianski5659
      @arnokilianski5659  8 років тому +2

      +Mo Robles I just guessed how far to move the clutch actuator. My approach was just to make a small adjustment and see what happens. If I had decided that it should go back where I found it, the spray paint would have told me exactly where that was.
      The recommended approach to make this adjustment involves a spring scale. There is at least one other UA-cam video illustrating this procedure. You might want to check it out.
      I'm glad you found this video helpful, but that's all the help I can offer, as the car is now sold, and I have no intention of acquiring or working on another one anytime soon. (Converting one to a three-wheeled chopper might be a cool retirement project, though!)

(and I get to have the fun to help him too! :-) )There is no way I'm going underneath a car though. I am afraid of cars falling off their jacks since that's very easy to do. How do you check the transmission oil, (I am a female, lol) can't find the dipstick) and has anyone ever used an additive in the oil to stop a leak.

    • @joestitz239
      @joestitz239 9 років тому +2

      Chelsea Mcgaugh there is no dipstick on smart car for transmission, smart car transmission check, is similar to another cars, rear differential, (rear drive gear box).. There is a cap you unscrew on transmission, then use perhaps allen wrench to dip it down inside the hole. (don't let it fall in--use short end of wrench) then pull out and see if fluid is (on wrench) at TOP, right at the hole..
      If it is drained, ok then replace drain cap: to Refill add new fluid till it comes out the refill hole, that IS the fill line (the fill hole itself).. Then screw filler hole cap back on. Hope this helps, print this.

    • @chelseamcgaugh9900
      @chelseamcgaugh9900 9 років тому

      Joe Stitz thank you so much, my mechanic couldn't find anyway to check, I started doing research on my car. There seems to be a tiny leak of oil at the back and the mechanic recommend an additive that I can't remember what it was called, but he said they put it in there trucks to seal it and I was wanting to know if anyone has had that problem. I also researched the little beeping with the transmission in reverse and I found that in 2009 they had a recall on the 2008s and upgraded the computer software to I think 2.3 and that helped that problem, haven't called them yet to see what that entails, but I am having that problem.

    • @joestitz239
      @joestitz239 9 років тому

      Chelsea Mcgaugh i heard no recall on 08 smart. Mine has not been touched. I would prefer no additive, they hardly do as prescibed and dont last. Get gasket changed and add new proper fluid. Those company trucks do that because companies mostly need shortcut cheap fixes to Try stay in use, (theres an irony there) and when they do fail, company can afford the eventual repair and still write it off taxes. Additives may have detergents, i would not do that. Is trans gasket leaking ? Or the actuator ? i have never heard one beep from my car using reverse.

      +ihonestytruthful Try this fix (aerosol grease in the shift motor) before you buy and see if it works. If it does, you might have scored yourself a bargain--or you can still walk away from it, and the current owner will be grateful. If it doesn't work (a half hour of city driving will tell you) you haven't harmed anything; just walk away from the deal.

      John L I fully agree. The car in question is now sold. (Dad passed away about a year ago, and Mom doesn't need two cars.)
      There are other cars that deliver equal (or nearly equal) fuel consumption, on regular gas--not premium.
      Also, the "automated standard" transmission was a wing-nut idea. Modern automatics can deliver gas mileage equal to a standard transmission, and CVT's can beat them both!

      I no longer have the car shown in the video. If you cant find the off-white plastic vent cap that I show at the 2:00 mark, under the air intake ducting, then it's possible that your car is different, in which case I can't help you.
      Some possible confusion here: There are other plugs on the rear differential, used to drain and replenish the actual transmission fluid. This video does not deal with them.
