Very helpful video. Thank you for posting it up on youtube. This is also very helpful to those who sell these 3rd gens with the power hatchback pull down mechanism. How many times do we watch a used auto seller on youtube demonstrate closing the hatchback on the 3rd gen that they are selling by slamming it down like it's the trunk lid to a 73 Pontiac Grand Prix or a 65' Chrysler New Yorker, among countless other smog exempt vehicles? I've posted comments on such youtube vids the importance of not slamming these down on the 3rd gens with the hatchback power pull down mechanism option installed, but they just delete my comment and continue to slam it down.
As your video demonstrates, most of the crucial parts in this mechanism are plastic. These third gens such as the one in your video, are soon approaching 40 years old. Over years of being subjected to heat and time itself, the plastic parts become brittle. Slamming down the hatchback will cause such aged plastic parts to fracture and break. Eventually these broken plastic parts will cause the component to fail. This was also true when these cars were brand new. When I purchased my 87' Pontiac GTA new, one of the things the dealership expressed to me was to not slam the hatchback down, because doing so will break the internal plastic parts. The plastic runners are the first to get damaged. It's a domino effect, because next the plastic housing and/or the toggle that cuts power to the motor once the hatchback lid has been pulled down all the way.. All that is required is to slowly lower the hatchback lid until the hook latches onto the pull down mechanism. The electric motor will then be tripped and start pulling the lid downward. Once the appropriate distance has been met, the plastic toggle on the switch is tripped which cuts the power to the electric motor. If this plastic toggle gets broken because of the slamming of the hatchback, current/power will continue to the motor. This will cause a battery drain and the motor will overheat with high probability of starting the interior on fire at the hatchback.

    Congrats on the trunk fix.👏🏻
I notice the paint inside the Trans Am trunk is red, while the exterior is blue. Was the Trans Am re-sprayed at some stage, or is that some sort of interior base coat?
Where is that Cadillac "Beast" you had a year ago? You stopped showing it and I hope you disposed of it.
Oh, those annoying underground parking garage lights, that you cannot just set to "On" - they always time off after some minutes.

The car used to be red and the previous owner resprayed it blue. The Caddy is still around, it just spent a long time in the shop... 💸
