    There’s a couple of things that concern me. The rescue said Otis had dental disease. If this was the case he should’ve been on antibiotics long term. It keeps any infections at bay. One of my dental bunnies has outlived his expected time because of antibiotics and proactive care. Buns with dental disease should be going for dental checks monthly, 3 monthly, 6 monthly or annually (depending on what the vet finds). The rescue should not have said to wait for poopy butt- he needed proactive care to prevent dental issues.
    The first vet was right to do bloods and X-rays. X-rays show what’s going on with the jaw and show things we can’t see just from looking that their teeth. Most exotic vets will do this. BUT they should’ve done the dental whilst he was already under anesthesia from the X-rays. That’s common practice and they should not have waited when they see a bun that’s not eating.
    I feel like you were mislead so much and could have been prevented if you were given the correct info and vet care. I’m so sorry you had to experience this. It makes me so mad when bunny owners have to go through things like this.
    Binky free Otis. 💜

      I don't agree with the antibiotics, they should not be used as a preventive measure. Having dental issues makes you prone to infections, but being prone to dental issues doesn't make you prone to infections; again, close monitoring is most important. The frequent check-ups I fully agree with though! As for what the initial vet should have done: anesthesia is always a risk, and with an otherwise healthy bunny that needs an emergency procedure done, I think it needs to happen anyway to save his life. It was not wrong, bit a bit unnecessary in my opinion. The X-rays weren't really necessary either, again they aren't bad and give a good overview to see any problems, but to get the dental done you don't really need them, because under anesthesia you can take a good look at the molars without the need for medical imaging. As a veterinary medicine student it hurts to hear that many vets don't know rabbits too well. If I would not have had rabbits myself I probably also wouldn't get to know rabbits too well as a vet. If I could handle more pets than I have right now I would love to get experience with reptiles or amphibians, but I already know much more than most of my peer students through reading a lot about them and UA-cam (Thank you Tyler too).
      Okay this was probably very long, hope it was helpful for someone ☺️

      @@jobkaashoek based on the description of what happened I agree-antibiotics are far too commonly used for prevention and shouldn't be dispensed that way without further testing. However pre-anesthetic bloodwork is essential. While I understand your reasoning (the dental had to be done regardless), he was a senior rabbit (not young) with pre-existing health issues, without any recent bloodwork, and pre-anesthetic bloodwork can make a difference in treatment. For example if it displayed that he was dehydrated, he could've been treated for dehydration prior to the surgery (which would be important in this case). If kidney/liver levels were a little off, the vet could tailor their anesthetic and drug protocols to better fit his needs. Many vets no longer perform procedures under anesthesia without pre-anesthetic for that reason, particularly in animals they have never seen before (or not recently). It's a huge liability and bloodwork can help prevent...preventable casualties. I know some vets don't incorporate it into their protocol but typically it's because majority of clients just want to cut to the chase so they don't even bother anymore. Under anesthesia you cannot get a clear overview of everything going on. Yes, they were aware of molar overgrowth, but you can't see the condition of their roots or anything under the gums, under anesthesia. Perhaps he needed an extraction, that would have only been seen through xray even if his molar otherwise looked fine on the surface. That's why many progressive veterinarians perform dental radiographs prior to even routine dental cleanings (in dogs for example). It sounds like "unnecessary testing" but in reality it's addressing every possibility to minimize the need for going under anesthesia again. Molar spurs can be an issue on the surface but ultimately if something was going on underneath his gums there would be a chance he *still* wouldn't eat even with the spurs trimmed down, it's more practical to address everything at once. Understanding the value of testing as a client can save you so much $$$ in the long run. That being said I agree with Hopping to Hope-they should have booked a time slot knowing his rabbit wasn't eating properly or acting normally where he could immediately be transferred from imaging to his dental. I'm unsure why they would take him in understanding the urgency of a rabbit not eating properly; if they didn't have enough time.
      On another note, rest in peace, Otis. I'm so sorry Tyler, and hope Olive is doing okay. ❤

      @@jobkaashoek buuut x ray can show of anything is wrong underneath. Sometimes visual can work....but using x ray and than looking visually is always smart to. I think Tyler was completely fluffed over and I'd be contacting the rescue and asking wtf and if I paid for said animal GIMMIE MY MONEY BACK. I'd be none to pleased to find out my rabbit had a preventable issue that could of been properly cared for.

    • @jobkaashoek
      @jobkaashoek 2 роки тому

      @@emslilzoo2906 I actually agree on the imaging and testing, I think I would definitely ask to the owner whether they want blood work and/or X-rays. I would inform them of the costs (in terms of money) and benefits for the rabbit. If I can convince the owner to get blood work and X-rays done, that would be great. Many rabbit owners who don't care as much for their rabbit as they would for a family dog - a category Tyler doesn't belong to - would probably choose for just a dental though. It's also about the money they actually have on hand, if the owner couldn't afford extensive testing, I wouldn't force the additional costs on them.
      I really like hearing the opinions of others, I think different perspectives really help in becoming a better veterinarian.

    • @jobkaashoek
      @jobkaashoek 2 роки тому

      @@Silver_wind_1987_ I disagree with the getting mad at the shelter. They were in contact with a vet and probably followed their advice. It might not be the best advice (rather terrible actually), but the shelter wouldn't know better if that's what the vet told them.
      Also, because there have been several dentals before, it might have been nice to know whether X-rays were made before. If they were, for a regular dental trimming I don't think doing X-rays again is necessary, especially if it was for a regular check and trim (Otis was probably quite severe, so then secondary problems could have come up already).
      All in all it's a shame that most vets don't see rabbits too often and thus don't know all the fine tricks to treat them in the best way, with all the differences between rabbits vs. dogs and cats.

    Your feelings are so normal, I've had guinea pigs and rabbits for the majority of my life, and I've dealt with some horrible losses of both. It's so hard to notice when they're not feeling good, and by the time you notice it's often too late, so I'm glad that you paid such close attention to him. It's easy to focus on the should have, could have, would have after they're gone, but seeing your videos you clearly love and care for your pets so much, we give them the best life while we have them, and when they're gone we think of how we could have done things different. Otis had the best bunny life while you had him, so don't dwell on what you could have done

      To add to this, I hate setting myself up for grief, but I try to adopt the older animals that no one else wants as well. My newest guinea pig is 4 and has one eye, he came from a home where his owner had gone off to college and the rest of the family didn't have time for him. He's the sweetest little guy and I like say what he lacks in sight he makes up for in personality :) The woman had been trying to rehome him for a few months, but its hard to find a home for a 4 year old one eyed guinea pig, but he's been a great addition, so I hope I'll have many more years with him

    Rest In Peace, Otis. I have 2 rabbits as well. A Havana (the rescue) and a lion head (had since a baby) and they love eachother soooo much. We don’t know how old the rescue is so I’m afraid that he’s going to pass before the other and it’s a really scary thought. But olive is a strong bun! I am mourning as well. The death of my leopard gecko, momo. He was only 2 years old and I got him when he was a baby but earlier this year he got sick after removing his sperm plugs and then got bloody loose stool and then stopped eating completely and then had a hemipene fall out and turn black and hard and needing surgery to get it removed and then becoming paralyzed from the waist down where he only lived for a week and died the day of his vet appointment because he wasn’t improving. There was a point where I was taking him to the vet more than twice a week to the exotic vet that’s an hour away from me, force feeding him 3xs per day, massaging his belly, bathing him, manually stretching his legs. It’s so disheartening having a pet that can hide so well that something is wrong until it’s too late. And it’s hard not to blame yourself but you know you did everything you could until the very end. I hope nothing but the best for you, your family, and olive. Please remember to take care of yourself. 💕 I will keep you in my thoughts.

    I work in vet med and it’s 100% required to do full bloodwork prior to any procedure at my place of work. It’s incredibly negligent to move forward with putting a pet under without it. We run full bloodwork in house and then proceeded as long as all values are safe to move forward. Dental x rays are also very important to see if there’s a fracture under the gum line, abscess, bone loss, etc. because it’s useless to grind down and clean a tooth that needs to be extracted for quality health moving forward. Before I worked in the field I felt the same way and declined bloodwork and x rays but I now understand and physically see why it’s so incredibly important. If you go to the emergency room or doctor they do blood work, CT scans, etc the same applies for our pets. We as humans don’t go to the dentist and not get x rays before getting work done

      The issue was more-so that they were running everything but not treating it as urgent, which it was. They said they’d do the dental in 2 weeks (which we were not going to wait for), but didn’t tell us that he wouldn’t be seen until after running everything, or else we would’ve definitely gone elsewhere that could’ve gotten us in faster if possible. They originally made it sound like he’d be getting it same day when we booked which is why we went to them.
      They actually still haven’t even called back to schedule him for the dental (which really shows that they don’t understand the urgency of a rabbit not eating). Overall it is just tragic, but we did end up finding an incredible rabbit vet on his final day, and we are thankful for them and definitely know who to go to for future bun care now.

    I’m so sorry about Otis. I was recently just petsitting and they had 3 rabbits. They had literally just left like an hour ago and I went to the house to pick up their dog and put the bunnies up. I noticed one not looking well, FaceTimed their Mom, and she agreed. So, I rushed him to the emergency vet and it was so busy, we sat awhile, the rabbit started basically screaming ): they rushed it back but unfortunately he didn’t make it. He passed away from GI Stasis it’s so heartbreaking.

    That is so sad. I am so sorry that happened. He was a good bun. For anyone considering lop eared buns, know they come with a much higher chance of illness and physical deformities. Teeth issues like overgrowth and impaction are very common in lopps because their skull is shaped wrong. Most are partially deaf. Many are completely deaf. All have very high chance of ear infection and eye infection/issues. Again, something to consider if you want a log. All buns could have issues, but the chances of a lop having problems is significantly higher based on their anatomy. Just like, a husky and bulldog can both get cancer and other health issues. But bulldogs by design tend to get them at birth, very young, or die younger of physical complications like overheating or improper breathing. It's really sad.

    • @jobkaashoek
      @jobkaashoek 2 роки тому

      Also, bigger rabbits are more prone to arthritis, bigger dogs to hip dysplasia, west highland white terriers for example get more allergies, there is a genetic predisposition for almost everything.. Breeding for selective traits enhances such negative traits in a breed. Most healthy, but less predictable, are often mutts. The problems that pedigree animals get are quite a big issue and there's no simple solution. I always find it weird how crossbreeds are quite unpopular, they do give the healthiest dogs if the parents are of a similar size.
      However, don't let breed or physical characteristics stop you from adopting any animal, it's a little more important to be aware of the problems that can arise because of their genetics or anatomy. To anyone breeding animals, consider whether selective breeding on physical appearance is a healthy goal, and try to breed them as healthy as possible, not as extreme as possible.
      There is much more to be said about breeds and problems with them, these are just some thoughts and examples. It's an important discussion I think.

    Otis was adorable, I'm so sorry for your loss and the frustration with the vets. I had issues too recently, where I found my beloved Goffin cockatoo weak and unwell. Vet gave her antibiotics and she seemed to bounce back. Then for days they didn't call me back but emailed me saying she had kidney disease and renal failure, which my father said meant she was dying. When the vet did call back, he took it all back and said he didn't know what was wrong but she must be fine because of her great response to antibiotics. 2 months later I found her dead at the bottom of her cage when she seemed back to normal. She was on borrowed time. All this rushing to the vet and desperation at finding answers with exotic pet medicine when they're unwell is exhausting. My Goffin was a rescue, so we suspect she was older than we were told. I am so sorry your time with Otis was short but he had a wonderful end of life with you and Olive.

    Bunnies are so tricky when they get sick. Any time one of ours showed even the tiniest bit of reluctance to eat, we get them to the vet. They hide things so well, it's scary. It has cost us a lot, and now we have critical care always on hand, and an appetite stimulant just incase the vet can't fit us in right away. I wish they didn't hide things so well.

    im so sorry :( surprisingly have the same exact story of my chihuahua that i lost 2 months ago. She was in severe pain about 4 months ago and we didnt know why so we took her to the vet and they said it was just arthritis and put her on some pain meds. She did well the first month but a month later she went downhill. Pain came back, wouldnt eat, we had to force feed her rotisserie chicken because everything else she wouldnt eat. Shes always had bad teeth (like all chihuahuas) but we overlooked thinking it was her teeth but we brought it up to the vet when bringing her in and they said arthritis and they said she can get dental done but they were booked out so would need to go to a specialist which also was booked out. Since the pain meds helped for the first month we figured we had got lucky... we were wrong. She went downhill so fast. Stopped eating completely and when we took her to the ER they said she was severely anemic and too underwweight and they cant do teethwork on her to fix the pain/discomfort she was in because her health is so bad now. Its like even if we did book out the surgery she still wouldnt have been saved in time. breaks my heart I lost her. only 10 years old... its so crazy. I really do believe theres been shortage on vets. Every place around me in NY also you cant book any appt unless its 3 months in advance and if u got to the 1 ER vet thats within a 3 hour drive they tell u they cant take ur pet unless theyre on their death bed and even then they charge an extra $500 just to see them.

We recently had to take our dog to the vet and they put her on steroids and she would perk up then as the medication ended she declined we went back and they just gave us more steroids and ran more tests and at the end of it all we had to have her euthanized because she got so bad and they never could give us a reason to why this happened. I think a loss where you are left with so many unanswered questions is so much harder.

    So sorry for your loss. I wonder if he was given up because someone knew about medical issues and couldn’t / didn’t treat them.

    I can relate so hard to these vet issues. There are like 3 exotic emergency vets in Michigan. Except each location only has 1 exotic vet. I have a boa I needed to get into a vet asap on a weekend - and I spent all day calling the emergency vets to see when their Exotic vet would be in. Every time I called the vet was either at capacity with a pause on accepting patients or the exotic vet that was in did not treat reptiles. Even then if you can get there, theres no telling how long youd have to wait to be seen - I felt the same way in my situation, it just wasn't worth stressing the animal to even make the trip. Its really hard when exotics have health emergencies.
    I'm not sure which vets you've been to, but in the future if you ever need a vet asap, Frankenmuth - Birch Run veterinary hospital is great. They keep emergency slots open every day. I've never taken exotic mammals, only reptiles, but Dr. Buck is amazing. I've always been able to get in same day with urgent health issues.

    Rest in peace Otis. Tyler, you really did your very best- so metimes these things just happens and we can't do anything about it. You forcefeeding him probably kept him alive, I am very doubtful that had any part in this

      The big issue was them booking us and making it sound like he’d be seen quickly but then doing everything and afterwards informing us it would be 2+ weeks because the vet was on vacation. Had that been mentioned initially we would’ve tried to find somewhere else.
      Unfortunately he went through all of the stress of the visit and being sedated (which they didn’t inform us of until after), just for us to have to scramble and find another clinic for him. He definitely went downhill after the sedation.
      Out of all of this, we did find an incredible vet. They are a few hours away, but without a doubt we will be seeing them going forward for our buns. ❤️

    My flemish giant boy had to be put down due to a "liver twist" idk what the medical term for it was... It happened really quick. Day 1 he peed under himself and stopped eating, and day 2 at midnight he had to be put down even tho he had had a lot of veterinary care...

    Went through something kind of similar with a cat I had rescued she obviously had pyometra pus coming right out of the cats you know where. The vet was giving me the go around saying they needed to test for these other unrelated things. I pointed to her butt "this pus is coming from her ------- she has pyometra and she will die if you dont get her into surgery now" she finally agreed and did the surgery but I was flabbergasted. I understand bloodwork to make sure the cat is healthy before other surgery but with pyometra the cat is going to die either way if not surgically treated. Bleh. I'm sorry for your loss : (

      Pyometra or not the cat could die in surgery if the bloodwork came out with organ failure or other hidden problems. The point is to have them so you can be aware about the risks and decide if you want to be responsible for the cat not making it out of surgery and avoid having bad reviews just as the one you are making now. Open cervix pyometras are not in any way an emergency and can for sure wait at least 24 hours for the necessary exams. People should start appreciating the work of vets a little bit more, they didn't study 6-12 years of their life for someone to come with Google information.

    What the rescue told you was all wrong. Rabbits teeth grow faster than finger nails. I have two rabbits with tooth issues- the teeth grow 1/4 inch in a month. Minimum the back teeth should be done every three months.

    When an animal is old and it's going to die it's going to pass on no matter what you do after 40 Years of dogs and having experienced with a lot of other animals from tortoises to birds you know this is the case too cuz you've had a lot of other animals also I give you kudos for spending all that money and time trying to do the best you could for him he is resting in peace now

    I mean the rabbit was displaying signs of systemic disease I wouldn’t have risked putting him under anesthesia without bloodwork *thoughts of a 4th year vet student*

    There are so many sketchy vets out there that will pile on things that are not necessary just for profit not for the welfare of the animals ❗
