The best thing about magic in this series compared to others is that the Author focuses on how many spells have almost entirely sentimental value and nothing else. Bird catching ring finding Field of flowers Statue restoration Photo's I mean they show plenty of offensive magic also. But Fri is finding these weird and oddly personal spells in mimics and stuff in her various travels over the years. Doesn't it not beg the question of WHY? why so many hidden spells have no real combat value? Why and who made them? It makes the world feel so rich to know that magic has such a personal nature to it.
Apparently the animator literally summon a dance crew to really emulate the dance and animate it by hands!!! And note this dance scene only a frame of pic in the actual manga so props to anime for extending it
Win #607 is partially correct. While it is the same song, the ED is using a different part of the song with different lyrics. Its also kind of a reply to the first ED. Where the first one started with "Are you alright? Can you hear me?", the second ED starts with "Yeah I'm alright, I can hear you". Its really beautiful once you notice it and definitely didn't lead to any tears
I dont think I mentioned this in the last two parts but, as a german I am VERY impressed how the voiceactors managed to pronounce every single word correctly. I've seen it in alot of animes over the past 20 years how many dont even come close to but in Frieren its almost perfect! *DING*
One thing about Voll... It is said if you dream of your loved ones, long gone, you will follow them soon. And Frieren did say her goodbye, but not in the usual "see you again" kind she does normally...
You skipped over the "Just date already!" ? Lol I'm sorry, that was a win in my book. Love seeing your commentary, it's made me look at anime differently and really appreciate the work that goes into it. Thank you for all your hard work on these!
Yeah it is a meme now. I see copies from the manga in comments on romance manga. I was waiting for it because it makes me laugh. Now I have to find it again.
I don’t see a lot of people mentioning it, but Frieren making Stark train with Vol is another way she’s keeping his memory alive. His techniques and wisdom will continue to live on through Stark and whoever he trains/teaches in the future
13:30 It also shows that dwarves and elves, despite both being long-lived compared to humans, age very differently. With dwarves being similar to humans but over a longer (streched) time. While a future elf we will meet still has a perfect memory.
All the little things that nobody notices really bring out the life in productions like this. Here's hoping the quality of the second season is just as masterful
Apparently the 1st class mage exam is one of the "weaker" arcs according to manga fans, and I think it's because it takes a decently large departure from the story thus far. However, for me, I really love this arc. It has a TREMENDOUS amount of world building and lore, particularly around how magic works, how it's used, and what it can do. More than that, though, it shows that this story has a lot of breadth in the types of stories it can tell. Yes, this arc is a departure from what we've seen thus far, yet the fact that they're able to tell it in such a compelling, interesting, and fun way is a testament to both the source material and the production team behind the anime.
The only thing I disliked about the mage exam arc was the time spent giving history and personality and backstory to side-characters that serve no relevance to the overarching plot or the central themes of the show. "Why should I waste my time watching random mage 5 fight random mage 6 for three episodes strait when none of it affects Frieren or Fern at all?" Is the thought process early in the arc when they take so long to reveal the story.
@@ethermelt4780 While it seems like an unnecessary amount of time and resources to allocate to side characters, in retrospect it should make more sense. A lot of the characters introduced during this arc are relevant in the story going forward (either directly or indirectly), so being able to cram in so much characterisation during the exam arc gives more breathing room to the meat of the content they are involved in later on. The story (at least where it is up to in the manga so far) has demonstrated that the side characters' development here hasn't gone to waste. I did find the pacing of the first and second exam a little drawn out, but in any case I think it's better they overdeveloped rather than underdeveloped their side characters.
I have to vehemently disagree that the backstory and characterization of these side characters are somehow not relevant to the overarching plot or central themes of the show. Meeting random people and helping/interacting with them IS the central plot of the show, in case you haven't noticed. Further, the various differences and similarities in which people live and experience life and finding meaning, beauty, and worth in all of it is one of the major central themes of the story. If anything, the fact that so many top-tier mages had such varied, distinct, and unique understandings and takes on magic was a major world building point in and of itself.
i’m not going to lie when i first watched that scene my first thought was when he does that little “Me” edit over characters heads and i’m so sad that didn’t happen 😭
The music chosen here was very deliberate, not surprising when the composer is Evan Call, who also composed for Violet Evergarden. He scored this anime like a film score which means he compose after watching the scenes. It's very different from other anime where usually the composer is given instructions by the anime studio and director and the music is composed accordingly. This is the reason why the music fits perfectly well with the anime scenes because it was created to enhance and add to the scenes instead as an afterthought.
Episode 15 was one of my favorites. Many shows have an episode or two, or an arc where someone poses as someone else in a similar manner. They always seem to put in some big twist or try to push the anxiety of "what if they're caught" situations. With Frieren, however, everything goes perfectly as planned. There isn't any significant stress put on the whole imposter situation. Instead, the episode focuses on realistic themes of regret, support, and moving forward. The main twist is the care the duke has for his remaining son, and even Stark despite the cold initial reception. If everything didn't go according to plan, there would be an awkward distraction from the beautiful stories and lessons involved. 10/10 episode for me.
@@merlyworm only 3 anime worth mentioning as frieren's contenders this year. kingdom 5th season, re zero 3rd season and mushoku tensei 2nd season part 2. i dont know what re zero and mushoku tensei will bring to the table, but i sure both will have a very hard time and expectation
@@Alcides985 Mushoku strongest point is going to be season 3, but this next arc is also good. But even at the strongest points I would Say that Frieren is better than Mushoku. For Re:Zero, i didn't read it so it could be better but i don't think it will be. And for this year another contender could be Dandadan. But with said, I'm in the boat of Frieren being the best anime in the last 10 years, even above SnK, Vinland saga and anyother.
The story, the characters, the art, the animation, all blended to make a sweet, smooth and gorgeous piece of fiction that is top tier and should be used as the bar from now on.
I love that the title for episode 17 works for both halves. "Take care" is in goodbye but also "take care" as in to look after someone. When I first met him, Denken was honestly the scariest character based on how quickly he figured out Frieren's plan.
So the speculation around the reason why the X number of years since the passing of Himmel is specifically from then is that the demons where that afraid of the hero. In Wirbel's flashback he talks about how demon activity suddenly increased 29 years ago and wouldn't you know it it's been 29 years since Himmel passed.
Ive been posting this all over the youtubes and other sites since Frieren was announced and they said Evan Call was going to do the OST. The man knows what he's doing. He did the music for Violet Evergarden. I was really excited when I saw it announced, and the man did NOT disappoint. The music is fantastic.

Some of my own favourites that I would have given a win: Sein saying "just start dating already" about Fern and Stark. He, too, sees that young love and just wants them to be happy together. Himmel's reaction to the old dwarf, reaffirming his decision to stay for his long-dead wife. I think it's hinting at a reason why Himmel never asked Frieren to stay with him: He didn't want another long-life person stuck in the past after he died.
i’d like to point out the multiple instances of these super powerful mages that are issuing the tests, being near and holding the MAGIC SENSITIVE birds that our test takers are all trying to capture. 41:59 I mean Frieren had to stay completely still for a chance to catch one and they are just chilling with it on their hand while moving and having a conversation. INSANE MAGICAL CONTROL.

I've heard quite an ammount of people not liking this arc too much because it's "too shonen-ish" and even tho I can understand I feel like this arc is so well done and really presents some interesting characters, especially Denken, Ubel and Wirbel (+ Serie) in a very dynamic way while expanding a lot into the magic stuff giving a way to instead of giving a full on exposition about it, it does it, as usual, in little tid bits while some great action packed scenes that blend flawlessly. Also, I agree with you about loving when people realizing who Frieren is and contextualizing how past gens or people that study a lot are more knowledgeable about her while new gens cant even start to comprehend how busted she is lmao
I suggest after you're through with Frieren, you do Apothecary Diaries next. Exceptional for many of the same reasons as Frieren, but at the same time quite different.
I liked the difference beteween Fern and Ubel in their fight. Ubel was worried about the damage she was doing to the forest...Fern left a new road through it
Now that I rewatch that anime via your video, this is really similar (in event) to other anime of that genre, but well executed. No drama, talking too much, also good animation ...
50:42 I think Sense also deserves a Win just because she summoned an umbrella to no get her hair wet after Frieren broke the barrier because it's raining xD
God damn I love Himmel. He's such an enigma of a well written "generic but not generic" Hero. Emotionally intelligent, caring, perfect but still not flawless. Humanely perfect? Yeah that's it
The first class mage exam arc has similar mechanics and purposes as the Chunnin Exam arc in Naruto. In both arcs, a lot more characters are introduced that aren’t the core group. Those new characters also become important in later arcs.
On hindsight (aka: rewatching the show with context), Fern showed herself to be uncomfortable EVERY time Stark touched her with his hands. Such as the dance, or him helping her off the log. They didn't exposit, but she looked uncomfortable and hesitated every time before visibly forcing herself to do it anyway.
I think a small underrated thing is everyone has normal human proportions, none of the men are massively muscular none of the women are inhumanly skinny nobody wears anything particularly revealing just for the sake of fan service everyone just looks and acts human
one thing pointing out, the OSTs were done by the same composer who did OSTs for violet evergarden (Evan Call). Do listen to some of it you will definitely enjoy it
"Why don't you start dating already?" HE SAID THE THING! Mage Exam Arc FTW. Denken casts [My Clenched Fist].... it was Super effective. Showing off that AK-FernySeven again. Attack magic go [brrrrrrr]
Denken revealing his favorite part of magic made me reconsider my poor impression of him, but when he dropped the cloak and cocked the fists he was solidly up there as one of my favorite of the contestants. Ole Timer was out of mana but he still had them hands
I miss Sein T__T He was the children therapist they needed xD Uuuh I´m still not a fan of Übel but I have to give her points for coolness... Salivating at the sight of the library, it looks soooo beautiful and I wanna run my hands along the book spines so badly ♥ Denken is best man, that dude became my fave quicker than Frieren could form a spell XD Love how he went straight into a fistfight for the bird xD Wirbel grew onto me too, he´s cool :3 I always find it funny when he says "luck is a skill, too" right after Wirbel had the luck of catching a Stille out of nowhere xD
Übel is one of the best characters. She learns other peoples spells by understanding the person. She has such a great imagination too. Or lack thereof, because she doesn't think of certain things as magical shields
"A gross-yet-totally unique-looking monster"... at least until Magia Baiser from Gushing Over Magical Girls got her hands on her crop and whipped some plants. 🤣
Witcher 3 was on sale for 20 dollars so I picked it up because he kept mentioning it, I recall trying to play it a long time ago but my pc was too weak, it can handle it now but I lost interest until watching these. (I think he mentioned it on the first or second part and that is when I picked it up, I plan to try it today)
I highly recommend taking it in small sittings cause it's ine the top 3 of slow burn games. Steam charts says that only 23% of people have beat the game...
The animal came in to drink water, along with the bird, is because they couldn't "see her." No mana means that it is a corpse. Also, The studio that did this animation will get a lot of "love" to see what they have done before. I HOPE they do this much work in the second half. I haven't seen this much quality in a show in a long while. Also.. Free Ren. not Firen
Yep, this whole show is just full of wins. For such a slow moving show, makes me wonder cause it seems like it still seems like the champ of wins per minute.

one thing pointing out, the OSTs were done by the same composer who did OSTs for violet evergarden (Evan Call). Do listen to some of it you will definitely enjoy it
When I realized where episode 16 was leading so hard to not get emotional
"Why don't you start dating already?"
HE SAID THE THING!
Me going to bed
New video just release
Me: YAMETE YO!
Okay „Luck is a Skill“ is just prove this is an RPG world. Not that we needed any more.
you will LOVE the 4th Quarter^^
Denken and Himmel are by far my favorite characters in this show
Hey, are you gonna do a review of "Shangri-La Frontier"? It seems like an anime type you enjoy.
I miss Sein T__T He was the children therapist they needed xD
Uuuh I´m still not a fan of Übel but I have to give her points for coolness...
Salivating at the sight of the library, it looks soooo beautiful and I wanna run my hands along the book spines so badly ♥
Denken is best man, that dude became my fave quicker than Frieren could form a spell XD Love how he went straight into a fistfight for the bird xD
Wirbel grew onto me too, he´s cool :3 I always find it funny when he says "luck is a skill, too" right after Wirbel had the luck of catching a Stille out of nowhere xD
Übel is one of the best characters. She learns other peoples spells by understanding the person. She has such a great imagination too. Or lack thereof, because she doesn't think of certain things as magical shields
Thanks I already know that, I just didn´t want tot spoil it here xD still dont like her, though^^@@jonathanwessner3456
absolute masterpiece!
Denken is a true chad, love all the great characters in Frieren
So at the end of this video, on average each episode got roughly 36.4 wins. I am curious to know is any other shoe has gotten quite so many before
One Piece is getting a lot around the Part 18-22 area, other than that not much comes to mind.
2:10 how is this a win?
cant wait to see the final part
rotoscope was the key short cut to animation, sometimes it works but its just odd when the timing is off
What is the highest number of average wins per episode, that one anime got in one season, and how das Frieren rank in this list?
Dang it, I had a comment I wanted to make from early on in the video but damn if I can remember it now.
why is her face so squish up in that frame 😂
27:37
You are the coolest! 😎
Really hope you enjoy it, it's definitely still my #1 game of all time.
Im currently on my 4th rewatch of freiren and there will be a 5th although i think im gonna rewatch dragon ball next:(
not giving points for "I eat cake" was a crime lol
I have 10% left of my battery on my s9 I've been using since it got released wish me luck o7
Man the show is so good
The animal came in to drink water, along with the bird, is because they couldn't "see her." No mana means that it is a corpse.
Also, The studio that did this animation will get a lot of "love" to see what they have done before. I HOPE they do this much work in the second half. I haven't seen this much quality in a show in a long while.
Also.. Free Ren. not Firen
If anyone watched the dance without saying, "Ship it." I would be confused how.
hell yeah, another one
We are headed to 1k wins here...
More Frieren?
Me give like.
Yep, this whole show is just full of wins. For such a slow moving show, makes me wonder cause it seems like it still seems like the champ of wins per minute.
holy shit frieren might hit 1k wins
