It's strange to hear the words "Peter Hammil's vocal style" when he goes through every style in the book, even sometimes in the same song. Maybe they are talking specifically about his more squawky moments.
I would like to give an honorable mention to "Manfred Mann's Earth Band". Yes their version of Binded by the Light was a big hit, but I know few people who even recognize great albums like "Solar Fire", The Good Earth", "Glorified/Magnified", "Messin'" & "Nighingales and Bombers". Quite a fantastic run.
I second the mention of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The "Solar Fire" album of 1973 is in my top ten progressive rock albums of the entire decade! I love the band and they are still touring in 2022.
I'm from the Netherlands and never heard about Finch. Being 56, I might be just a bit too young to have discovered them back in the day. Thank you!! I agree with Renaissance!
Ne if my all time fav prog bands..Caravan..not in the top six, not on your..where do they rate Scot..love your top five..great video..took some notes👍❤glen
Yes, I agree with Kellywann - Gentle Giant, despite their resurgence, still ought to be ranked up there with Yes, Jehtro Tull, ELP and King Crimson. Other contenders might be Deus Ex Machina (Italy...although possibly more jazz-rock than prog); UNIT (Scotland...although not technically a pure progressive rock outfit); Curved Air...we need more violas and less guitars and that's official; Wolf (the Darryl Way ensemble, especially when they drafted in that singer from IF, you know, what's his name); Caravan...perhaps and a couple of others but then if I go any further, there's liable to be a list of 20 groups and I have to stop somewhere!
Very good list, the first 4 Camel, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator and Soft Machine for me are a little bit underrated but not too much. Anyway I consider Soft Machine much more jazz than prog-rock but that's another story. Really glad you included Man, Finch, Le Orme, Kaipa, Family, Nektar, Starcastle etc (some I don't know). For me it's missing Gryphon, Strawbs, Focus, Caravan, Manfred Mann's Earth Band and The Flower Kings. See you Scot.
Excellent list. I might have added Niemen from Poland. I had the great fortune to have seen VdGG in 1976 in NYC which was their only US date until they returned in 2009.
Post Script: I saw Happy The Man from their beginnings at JMU (Madison College then) back in 1973. They performed their maiden concert at the Student Union Center in October that year. I was expecting a good band to perform.I was dead wrong! They were INCREDIBLE! Their musicianship was off the charts. They played a miscellany of originals and covers sung by their first lead singer Cliff Fortney, who had a style a la Pete Hammill and Peter Gabriel. They played a stunning rendition of Man-Erg by Van Der Graaf Generator. These guys did not take a back seat to anyone!
Excellent list. I plan to check out the bands on this list. I wonder what you think of bands like the Florida based Babylon; German/Italian band Analogy and Northern Irish band Fruupp.
One of my very favorite bands is Crack The Sky . The have been going since the 70's absolutely incredible. And they are still cranking out great albums.
if you wanna mention Van Der Graaf Generator, I'd say you should also include their Long Hello albums they did outside the band. I've only heard the first one, but I really love it! otherwise, some music acts that also stand out to me as being very underrated (though I'm not sure they should make this top 25): IQ and Pendragon are pretty well-known I think, but I'd still consider them underrated since they are simply my two favourite progressive bands of all time. I literally rank them up there with the likes of Yes and Genesis. Ezra Winston. I just listened to them again, and holy crap I forgot how good their two original albums are (I've yet to listen to their new one from 2021) Willowglass. Not much to say, I just really really love his music Night Flight. One album ever released, and so obscure they are not even on Progarchives at all and Prog Line couldn't even get the band's name right (yet they were just released on Tidal, which really shows how far streaming services have improved when it comes to their selection of progressive rock), but wow that album is amazing, I always love coming back to it. They're not the best ever, but they're just so obscure they are very underrated by default. Canamii. Another obscure band with only one album, but to me there's something about their sound that makes them stand out from other bands. Feelings in particular really transports you to a different world North Star. I can see why one would dismiss them, but I genuinely believe the brotherly duo of Glenn and Kevin Leonard was one of the most underrated power houses of progressive rock. Their music can feel hit or miss to me, but when their music hits, it hits HARD for my last one, this is half-meant as a joke, but I still wanna bring attention to them: Kiss. Yes, that Kiss. Crazy makeup-wearing Kiss. Hear me out: everyone knows Kiss for their hard rock, and they were immensely successful at it, but here's a fun fact: Kiss once released a progressive rock album. It's called Music From the Elder, and I was shocked by how much I liked it, considering who made it. Odyssey in particular is easily my favourite Kiss song of all time. While Kiss in general aren't an underrated band, I do feel like their foray into progressive rock deserves more attention and credit.
I saw an American band called Mckendry Spring in the early seventies, they were billed as a country rock band, but were more prog playing extended instrumentals such as God Bless the Conspiracy and a version of Niel Youngs Down by the River. I only have one of their albums, Mckendry Spring III. Like Curved Air, they were very much into the electric violin as a lead instrument.
Mannfred. Recently Mann, Alan Psrsons, Marilliom, Kraftwerk, Saga, Moody Blues are all a bit more popular but under appreciated. Recently, a group called Generous Men. Camel was a nice catch.
Barclay james harvest, were definitely prog first few albums,it would be great to do a video on their best albums scot,i know you have loads of other ideas and such, but this would be a great video to watch scot😊
I agree with you about The Wall; that was the end of Pink Floyd for me. I actually quite liked ATTWT, but, you're right, Genesis weren't the same after Wind. However, it was Duke which put me off at the time. I sort of agree with you about Tormato, but I didn't think it was awful 😊
GG and VDGG definitely have the title of the most underrated bands by people in general, but not by those who have listened to them! These 2 groups have composed real masterpieces: VDGG (PH, SL, G), GG (ATT, TF, O, IAGH, TPATG, FH). The group with which I have the most pleasure to listen to is without a doubt GG with all these intersecting instruments and these original and complex melodies.
Oh, thank you those 2 chaps below (or above, wherever they appear) for giving shout-outs to GENTLE GIANT, partly because they are my favourite progressive rock group but primarily because they really do belong (in my evidently biased opinion) within the top six...in which case it'll be the top seven, of course. Also, I think Van Der Graaf Generator merit more recognition. Here I cannot be accused of bias because I dislike intensely about 90% of their music which I find grotesquely slow, dreary and tedious but, after all, how many other groups sound like them? Their lyrics and texts are often strange and generally intelligent plus the contributions from David Jackson and Hugh Banton are inventive and original. I think I can be objective and recognise their importance to the history of prog rock despite my aversion to most of their work. I do like Killer and Theme One!
Great video, this might be somewhat off topic but have you ever checked out Weidorje? Their self-titled (and only) LP WEIDORJE is incredible and very underrated.
I've seen the name pop up a few times but no, I don't know this!!! But I will investigate!!! Thank you for the suggestion. I'm always on the hunt for my next favorite album...
@@TheProgCorner it’s most definitely a gem.. I‘d even go as far as calling it a masterpiece. It’s available on bandcamp for 7 bucks but there is also a CD release from Musea with 2 killer bonus tracks.. the CD version might be available on Qobuz for download. Cheers
‘Acid in Wounderland’ by Ego on the Rocks has become quite pricey to buy in vinyl or cd form. If you want to check it out Spotify and Amazon Music don’t have it but youtube has the cd release with bonus tracks. I would recommend,at first, just listening up to and including Civilization Song 1 to give you the initial release (1981) on vinyl experience. I can’t see you being disappointed if you give it a try.
I had both of them in my Top 100 Prog bands ranking so maybe I didn't think of them as being particularly under-valued but they are both incredible!!! Two of the best two-album bands ever - along with UK!!!
Great list! I would put Gentle Giant, Camel, and Renaissance in my top 5 bands of all time (with Genesis and Yes). Jade Warrior, Finch, Happy the Man, Magenta! All deserving.
@@TheProgCorner And a funny Starcastle story - I had some friends that didn't like Starcastle because they were Yes clones. So one day when they were over, I asked if they would listen to something. I played the last 2 songs on Starcastle's 1st album without them knowing who it was. They thought it was great! Any idea who it is? No. Does it sound like anyone you know? No. It's Starcastle. Mouths dropped. (BTW - my very first concert was Gentle Giant with Starcastle in Seattle!)
I like and know all the bands on your list, but three. My favorites from your list? Birth Control, Renaissance, Jade Warrior, Le Orme, Echolyn, Anekdoten, Camel, Nemo/JPL, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Bands I feel are criminally underrated? Nodo Gordiano, Barock Project, Wobbler, Unreal City, and lastly Big Big Train. I feel Big Big Train's last nine albums compare well with 1970s Genesis. I adore Wobbler and cherish every album. Compare well with 70's Yes. Not as good, but...What did you expect?
@ Trust me my brother. I’m looking to promote your outreach but when you go off the rails I’m going to bring it bc THAT will bring more viewers than playing “nice”
Any one who values Chicago until the 8th album knows what he’s talking about. Given that, you need to go on record doubling down on the ascendant nature that Oh Thank You, Great Spirit occupies
They probably don't deserve a top ten ranking, but the prog music of Ian Lloyd and the Stories, mainly on their "Traveling Underground" album is amazing. Have you heard it? If not, check it out, Scot!
@@TheProgCorner Yea, Mammy Blue is the only weak tune on the album. You'll be amazed by the rest of it. The title song sweeps me away every time I hear it.
Oh shit, this was an old video, but UNDERRATED … I am all in!!!!😎 Renaissance is criminally underrated and so are Moody Blues and Marillion (though I am a post-Fish fan - listen to Marbles!). I would like to add Italian Banco and Museo Rosenbach (and also PFM, though they are often mentioned). From the Netherlands Flamborough Head, mindblowing great music lots of synths and heavy riffs 🥰. From Sweden also Älgarnas Trädgård (Garden of Elks), very out-flipped. Mixed ethno, jazz, rock, folk …. Congreso from Chile!!! And last but not least Klaatu, though drummer Terry Draper says lprog pop”. And laster than last - the one album from McDonald&Giles and maybe Spring. (ELP are grossly overrated - don’t like bands where members are instrument-masturbators)
‘Acid in Wounderland’ is a little one-off gem by two ex members of Eloy calling themselves Ego on the Rocks. The bonus tracks on the cd version are very good but probably would have been best served being put on a follow-up album as they alter the feel of the vinyl experience a bit. I love Anyone’s Daughter’s self-titled album. For brilliant instrumental stuff from Europe it doesn’t come much better than Schicke Führs Fröhling. ‘Sunburst’, ‘Ticket to Everywhere’ and ‘Sunburst’ are amongst their best. ‘Ammerland’ by just Führs Fröhling is a lot mellower but still great - Schicke must be the lively one in the band. While you are in Europe why not check out Grobschnitt and Holger Czukay, ex of Can. I don’t know if they would come under the title of prog rock but a little musical wandering never hurt anybody.

Cast should be #1 underrated band ever, most of the people don't even know that they are from Mexico, since 1978 with albums starting at 1994 20 studio albums, crazy!
I was pleasantly surprised that you had Soft Machine in the #1 spot. They're my favorite band, well the Wyatt period is my favorite. I love Fifth because Phil Howard was a beast on drums. I love the BBC recordings with him. I still dig everything up to Seven because I'm a big fan of Hopper and Babbington, plus Marshall is such a great drummer. I find Bundles overrated even though it's a fine album. I like Holdsworth, but I find his lightning fast playing too frilly and cold. I really like what he did with 'Igginbottom though. Softs is a cool album, probably their most traditional prog sounding record. Etheridge is a great player. Anyway, Soft Machine as the Wyatt Hopper Ratledge trio was just mind-blowing and loud and in my opinion, bared the roots of noise and punk. I'm also a huge fan of the quintet with Dean and Dobson. I wish Dobson had stayed with them longer. He was sooo awesome.
Yeah, "perception" is definitely the key to an Underrated list!. To me, Soft Machine, Man, Audience and Family are as far away from Prog as you can get (almost). In the 70s/80s some of my friends who didn't listen to much rock considered any band who didn't make three minute songs and concentrated on albums to be Prog. I was constantly trying to explain the difference between Prog and Underground and other non-pop genres!
I would call al the bands you disqualify as Prog as among the most progressive bands. I have pretty wide range of what I consider as Progressive, but that's why we have different opinions. For instance, I don't separate Zeuhl or RIO groups as separate genres. One thing I loved about progressive was it seemed all inclusive if the people were doing something different! But I appreciate your opinion.
I would have added Aragon from Australia, Atoll and Cafeïne from France, Everon and Alias Eye from Germany, Glass Hammer from USA, Galleon and Carptree from Sweden, Citizen Cain and Landmarq from UK. and well, so much more 😄
@@TheProgCorner As I said, it's difficult...grading the level of underrating compared to "big names" in prog. I don't believe that Soft Machine had any chance of being "rated", but not because they were not good, they were / are, a great band that were just too jazzy for the rock market.
MY RESPECT and Heart is 💔 broken if you didn't mention CURVED AIR. One of the finest & earliest, long lasting 70s prog and genre creators with the rare violin plus the amazing female vocalist Sonya Kristina. I would like an explanation for this oversight or intentional dismissal. LOL! OH NO and did you not mention FOCUS with incredible guitarist Jan Ackerman, etc. Please say you didn't! Blasphemous! My bad if you did!
Focus was the last band I cut from the list - primarily because they had two big hits so I figured they aren't TOO underrated. Curved Air, on the other hand, should have made the list!!! Absolutely!!! Jan Ackerman is beyond great!!! Trailblazing guitarist!!!
I wouldn't say Spock's Beard and the Flower Kings are more well known than Camel, VDGG or Gentle Giant and yet they didn't make your list. Oh well. It's your list. I actually think some bands are underrated among younger prog fans and some are underrated among older prog fans (and overrated too where the case may be).
Being that they had two enormous world wide hits I felt they weren't truly all that "underrated." But they sure are great!!! Have you heard their two latest - Focus X and Focus 11? Incredible records!!!

Ne if my all time fav prog bands..Caravan..not in the top six, not on your..where do they rate Scot..love your top five..great video..took some notes👍❤glen
Caravan is getting some love these days so I feel like their position in the Prog World is kind of set!!!
@@TheProgCorner I can dig that🥰one of my favourite bands of all time in any genre..
Scott knows his music. Kaipa are one of the most underrated Prog bands and I bet most of you haven’t even heard of them.
I love Kaipa!!! What a band. Both eras are great!!!
Yes, I agree with Kellywann - Gentle Giant, despite their resurgence, still ought to be ranked up there with Yes, Jehtro Tull, ELP and King Crimson. Other contenders might be
Deus Ex Machina (Italy...although possibly more jazz-rock than prog);
UNIT (Scotland...although not technically a pure progressive rock outfit);
Curved Air...we need more violas and less guitars and that's official;
Wolf (the Darryl Way ensemble, especially when they drafted in that singer from IF, you know, what's his name);
Caravan...perhaps
and a couple of others but then if I go any further, there's liable to be a list of 20 groups and I have to stop somewhere!
👍👍👍
Very good list, the first 4 Camel, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator and Soft Machine for me are a little bit underrated but not too much. Anyway I consider Soft Machine much more jazz than prog-rock but that's another story. Really glad you included Man, Finch, Le Orme, Kaipa, Family, Nektar, Starcastle etc (some I don't know). For me it's missing Gryphon, Strawbs, Focus, Caravan, Manfred Mann's Earth Band and The Flower Kings. See you Scot.
Nice!!!!! Yeah, Soft Machine is kinda their own genre!!!
Excellent list. I might have added Niemen from Poland. I had the great fortune to have seen VdGG in 1976 in NYC which was their only US date until they returned in 2009.
Yes!!! I agree. Wow!!! VDGG in 1976? Legendary.
I would include Focus as well, but great list!
Focus was my final (painful) cut!!!
Great list! I’d add Maxophone, Bacamarte, Cathedral
Three great bands!!!
Wow!!! I would love to hear their version of that VDGG song!!!
Excellent list. I plan to check out the bands on this list. I wonder what you think of bands like the Florida based Babylon; German/Italian band Analogy and Northern Irish band Fruupp.
I almost included Fruup!!! So good!!! And I love that Babylon album. AmeriProg rules!!!
@@TheProgCorner I agree!
I agree with you renaissance is severely underrated one of my favorite prog bands them and now
One of my very favorite bands is Crack The Sky . The have been going since the 70's absolutely incredible. And they are still cranking out great albums.
Crack The Sky!!! Their first three albums were amazing. And Tribes was pretty great from 2021. 👍👍👍
if you wanna mention Van Der Graaf Generator, I'd say you should also include their Long Hello albums they did outside the band. I've only heard the first one, but I really love it!
otherwise, some music acts that also stand out to me as being very underrated (though I'm not sure they should make this top 25):
IQ and Pendragon are pretty well-known I think, but I'd still consider them underrated since they are simply my two favourite progressive bands of all time. I literally rank them up there with the likes of Yes and Genesis.
Ezra Winston. I just listened to them again, and holy crap I forgot how good their two original albums are (I've yet to listen to their new one from 2021)
Willowglass. Not much to say, I just really really love his music
Night Flight. One album ever released, and so obscure they are not even on Progarchives at all and Prog Line couldn't even get the band's name right (yet they were just released on Tidal, which
really shows how far streaming services have improved when it comes to their selection of progressive rock), but wow that album is amazing, I always love coming back to it. They're not the best ever, but they're just so obscure they are very underrated by default.
Canamii. Another obscure band with only one album, but to me there's something about their sound that makes them stand out from other bands. Feelings in particular really transports you to a different world
North Star. I can see why one would dismiss them, but I genuinely believe the brotherly duo of Glenn and Kevin Leonard was one of the most underrated power houses of progressive rock. Their music can feel hit or miss to me, but when their music hits, it hits HARD
for my last one, this is half-meant as a joke, but I still wanna bring attention to them:
Kiss.
The Elder is Prog!!! Kiss is awesome!!!! Prog fans are wrong about them…
I saw an American band called Mckendry Spring in the early seventies, they were billed as a country rock band, but were more prog playing extended instrumentals such as God Bless the Conspiracy and a version of Niel Youngs Down by the River. I only have one of their albums, Mckendry Spring III. Like Curved Air, they were very much into the electric violin as a lead instrument.
And one of their albums had a Roger Dean cover too!!!
Mannfred. Recently Mann, Alan Psrsons, Marilliom, Kraftwerk, Saga, Moody Blues are all a bit more popular but under appreciated. Recently, a group called Generous Men. Camel was a nice catch.
👍👍👍👍
Angel=S;/T, 1975, Helluva Band ,1976 =POMP Rock Prog. Masters!
I agree!!! Those first two Angel albums were AWESOME!!!

Barclay james harvest, were definitely prog first few albums,it would be great to do a video on their best albums scot,i know you have loads of other ideas and such, but this would be a great video to watch scot😊
I can see a BJH episode happening!!!!
Enjoy your site and shows
Thank you!!!! 👍👍👍
GG is definitely one of my all time favorite bands!!! So unique. So talented.
@@TheProgCorner ... and so fun fun to listen too!!!
Here’s a band for you: Barock Project. Exceptional musicianship in the vein of 70s prog but without sounding derivative. Impressive.
Big fan!!! And I love their new singer, Alex Mari. He’s been on their last couple albums. Just wow.
Fantastic list, so many of my favourite bands underrated? This makes me very sad for those who don't know them. I'd add Wigwam to the list.
Wigwam!!! You know I love them!!!
I would include Eloy on this list. Great band.
Yeah! Eloy is pretty great!!
VDGG are the definition of an acquired taste!!!
I have heard a little Anekdoten and loved the sound. I have a few of their albums on my Wishlist, but have ummed and ahhed too much 😆
I really enjoy what they do!!! Very dark and scary Prog.
Cheers

I love that you put the well deserlved Gentle Giant 2nd on the list. What are feelings about the band U.K.? Also, how about Dixie Dregs?
I love both UK albums. A lot!!! Dixie Dregs lost me after the first two albums but I rate What If as one of the best American LPs ever recorded!!!
@@TheProgCorner would you consider UK underrated?
@@johngranda3556 I think they are well-esteemed in the Prog community. Maybe slightly underrated...
Aphrodites Child definitely deserves a spot. They're the most criminally underrated prog rock band imo
An excellent call.
I am definitely going to investigate!!! Thank you, Stephen.
Can’t disagree with your top choices ( honestly will admit don’t know some of the others ) National Health familiar with them ?Hatfield and the North?
I had both of them in my Top 100 Prog bands ranking so maybe I didn't think of them as being particularly under-valued but they are both incredible!!! Two of the best two-album bands ever - along with UK!!!
@@TheProgCorner love the first UK album . Prefer the Wetton Bruford Holdsworth line up .
@@jefflevinson669 I love both about equally but the first one's got Bruford and Holdsworth. That's good enough for me!!!
Great list! I would put Gentle Giant, Camel, and Renaissance in my top 5 bands of all time (with Genesis and Yes). Jade Warrior, Finch, Happy the Man, Magenta! All deserving.
Awesome!!!

Not as good but almost!!!!
Lonely Robot is a prog rock band so underrated that even my friends who listen to prog have never heard of them.
John Mitchell!!!!!
Perfect!

They get no love.
I find most of the work available by Brother Ape to be engaging, diverse, original and worthy of repeated visits.
Brother Ape. Haven’t listened to them in a while…
@ impressive IMO
@ Trust me my brother. I’m looking to promote your outreach but when you go off the rails I’m going to bring it bc THAT will bring more viewers than playing “nice”
Any one who values Chicago until the 8th album knows what he’s talking about. Given that, you need to go on record doubling down on the ascendant nature that Oh Thank You, Great Spirit occupies
They probably don't deserve a top ten ranking, but the prog music of Ian Lloyd and the Stories, mainly on their "Traveling Underground" album is amazing. Have you heard it? If not, check it out, Scot!
I have NOT heard the whole thing. Only the one song, Mammy Blue. I see it’s here on UA-cam so I’m going to go listen to it now!!!
@@TheProgCorner Yea, Mammy Blue is the only weak tune on the album. You'll be amazed by the rest of it. The title song sweeps me away every time I hear it.
Oh shit, this was an old video, but UNDERRATED … I am all in!!!!😎
Renaissance is criminally underrated and so are Moody Blues and Marillion (though I am a post-Fish fan - listen to Marbles!).
A Golden Oldie!!!!!
I haven't heard that Ego On The Rocks but I LOVE Schicke, Fuhrs & Frohling!!! Awesome stuff!!!

Vigesimus was amazing!!! Can’t wait for new music from them!!! 👍👍👍
A pleasure to talk to a real Soft Machine fan!!!
Surprised you didn't include Triumvirate or The Nice.
They both could have made it but I think they are in the Prog Community consciousness...
Here’s another one for ya: Cast, from Mexico, exceptional execution, blend of Kansas, Dream Theater and Genesis
I LOVE CAST!!!! Vigesimus is a masterpiece.
@ impressive group
Yeah, "perception" is definitely the key to an Underrated list!. To me, Soft Machine, Man, Audience and Family are as far away from Prog as you can get (almost). In the 70s/80s some of my friends who didn't listen to much rock considered any band who didn't make three minute songs and concentrated on albums to be Prog. I was constantly trying to explain the difference between Prog and Underground and other non-pop genres!
it's always grounds for some excellent debates!!!
