According to Mickey Rourke, there are actually quite a bit of scenes cut from the film that feature Rourke's character that go into his backstory a bit more and what his actual endgame is. But they were cut during editing. That's why Ivan Vanko seems to not have that much screentime compared to other MCU villains. Pretty sad honestly. He could've been a great villain. This film reeks of studio interference. It seems like both Jon Favreau and RDJ (who did the story for this film) really wanted this to be bigger and better then the last one. But between the forced characters for avengers setup and the constant cuts to important scenes for character, it ends up being only ok.
It's a great film and that's incredibly overstated on it just being an Avengers set up movie smh, not to mention Fury and Shield have always been apart of Iron Man's stories. You're not losing anything.
Such wasted potential. That jail scene showed that Whiplash was a villain going after something other than revenge, but the film HAD to be an Avengers recruitment film. All of it, wasted on a whip.

Also forgetting to mention that Daddy also tried to sell the technology to get rich. If he had not them maybe Anton and Howard working together could have made the Arc Reactor really work. Instead Anton got sent back to Russia for trying to profiteer, could never replicate the work without Howard and decided to crawl into a bottle. Makes one wonder, Tony needed a small reactor and created the arc reactor in a cave. Ivan saw on TV the small reactor and that was all that he needed to figure out the missing pieces to replicate Tony's reactor along with an old set of plans. Maybe the Arc reactor was not all that hard to make if you just make it small vs trying to make a giant city powering version.

Sounds like a real russian, great job for mickey rourke.A shame he didn't have more time in screen. The worst of this film was Hammer, completely dispensable
I always felt like he would have been straight with hammer, that first meeting he looked like he was genuinely getting along in their dislike of tony. Then hammer kept bitching at him instead of treating him like a partner; and tried to lie about the bird. Ivan never really went after anyone who he wasn’t pissed at, cars in the race would have hit him and he only detonated the robots when he lost the fight with Ironman and warmachine, everything else was directed solely at his target. And he didn’t kill hammer in the end when he could have easily at the show with a robot, makes it seem like the only reason he killed the two guards was because he had to since they were guarding him and he needed to leave, if him and hammer were on good terms he could have talked to him about his plan. Would have made for a nice twist to have the villain actually survive in the end, and have hammer industries suddenly producing much better weapons and power armors with Ivan making them in the back ground, faking his death while hammer rivals tony. Such a shame that they decided to kill every villain in almost every single mcu movie
Yea, good point but it wraps things up, what your talking about I think kinda happened in the comics, in the first major story arc of the early Iron Man comics there's the Armour Wars, which is exactly what Ivan's if you can make God bleed line is all about, the sharks come for Tony and try rival or steal his tech, also referenced to early in the movie at the congressional hearing where he hacks into the government files and shows the different countries and hammer trying to copy him
He gave Tony the quote to punch Thanos hard enough to bleed. Just a thought. What if they didn't kill him off and he got to meet the Winter Soldier. It would be an epic Russian Battle

I was somewhat surprised when Ironman 2 got backlash from audience and hack-wannabe critics. What the directors failed to see was, their Marvel audience keep their brains turned off most of their days and dim it way low when watching Marvel movies.
It is very difficult for me to buy into US actors speaking eastern European accents/ playing characters from that area. For instance Tom Hanks in that airport movie stuck out like a sore thumb, Mickey is very very good and it doesn’t feel forced. He can play a ‘BIG’ character no matter the accent. Watching most US actors play a Russian is like trying to be convinced 2+2=7.

i like him too.
why did mickey change his face after this film? He looked bad ass. now he looks like a giant version of vern troyer
Who is agree ivan vanko is dark version of tony stark
The weird thing is that the text on his arm is written upside down

Nice foreshadowing.
Had to search back to this his character was badass to me. The villain he plays in this and Immortals are awesome!
here is my newest theory. ivan attack tony right in that race on purpose. because even though he knew he has so small chance it was like a win or win situation. if he win his revenge would be complete, but if he lose that fight will be seeing by worldwide media and everybody will know that there is someone who can make weapons as cool as stark do which this will get hammer's attention. because he saw him on tv, he figured out how he desperately want to beat stark.
now, until that point this theory kind of forced even for me, but then i remember. when they met hammer said ''you spoke to me with what you did''. he totally predicted that hammer will jailed him out to use him for make armor
s.
and while he use hammer and his money to build an army and armor make hammer believe that he is the one who use ivan.
...i love ivan. for me he is in my top 10 big screen super villain list. his motivation aside, he has an actual character. intimidating and entertaining one. you know;
his actually loving and caring his pet bird
his funny face expression before breaking the guard's neck
his making fun with hammer by speak russian
his calling tony and talk with him calmly in the room where he killed two man and hung their corpses.
but if that theory is true he is easily in my top 5. i mean.. you manipulative son of a bitch. this plot awesome
Don't get too attached to things ...
The biggest crime in his Russian accent is that he is saying words that begin with "TH" perfectly. For example, The = Zze, This = Zzis, That = Zzat
at 1:24 you can see after he banged on the table he checks on the bird to see if its ok x'D
Tony stark made Thanos bleed
this movie was under rated.. call me crazy i liked it better than ironman 3... ironman 3 was too unbelievable the body reaching those temperatures was too much..
what was the rest of this movie about ..I remember this 🤣
Can you imagine if this was the vision for the Mandarin? So much more alike. He’s smart, brutal and he’s obviously played out as tony Stark’s counterpart. Tony got to live the ideal life while ivanko and his father got shit on. The only thing that’d be different or need changing is him being russian

My Russian wife... She sounds EXACTLY like that
I want my bird!
Why does whiplash lose his legs or parts of them in the monaco race fight and then regain them whole through the rest of the movie?
As a kid I completely i thought that too lmao. It's just his boots that flop off because he doesn't tie them
He still looked decent here. Now his face looks like Mr potato heads does.
I was somewhat surprised when Ironman 2 got backlash from audience and hack-wannabe critics. What the directors failed to see was, their Marvel audience keep their brains turned off most of their days and dim it way low when watching Marvel movies.
I can make salute.
you can make salute?
what the hell does that mean ivan?!
Fireworks
It is very difficult for me to buy into US actors speaking eastern European accents/ playing characters from that area. For instance Tom Hanks in that airport movie stuck out like a sore thumb, Mickey is very very good and it doesn’t feel forced. He can play a ‘BIG’ character no matter the accent. Watching most US actors play a Russian is like trying to be convinced 2+2=7.
Vanko reminds me of Kraven the Hunter
I mean, both of them are Russian.
He would've been PERFECT for the role!
The villain ppl should sympathize with. Not Thanos
Rourke is a better actor than Downey Jr.
I didn't know Keith Richards was on steroids
