- This is a reproduction of a reproduction of a Union Civil War belt buckle. The buckle is cast in solid bronze.

swdweeb I’m 95% sure it can be soldered or mig welded.. We have an aluminum bronze Mig wire at the shop we use for repairing steel parts that are our of tolerance in the case that the customer can’t afford to machine new and I do know we can weld ok bronze with it.. I also believe we can use a bracing rod with a flux..
Prong or no prong, still a cool pour. And a cool buckle. P.S. brass soldiers up pretty easy, just sweat you a prong on.
Only problem i this is bronze, not brass. I don;t know if it I could braze something on or not. It's likely going to revisit the crucible ;-)
@@swdweeb there are brazing rods for aluminum bronze and other bronzes. Give it a try with some general purpose bronze rods (home depot or lowes should carry them for around $6 but there goes your YT profits lol).

Ha!! you know as I started to film I could almost feel them. I expected they were pretty loud. I tried to move the mic over to my shoulder but I guess that didn't help
Braise a tang on - much easier than trying to cast it and feather it in when you do the final linishing

Perry, Forgot the prong - AGAIN! - Really - I thought it was only old fogies like me who did silly stuff like that! Big problem now is that Aluminium bronze does not silver solder, so you can not put a prong on - well maybe - if you mix standard silver solder flux 50:50 with caustic soda flakes it will work as a flux on aluminium bronze - sometimes - worth a try!... PS, Was there really a "United sates" before the end of the civil war?
The way things are now, I'm not sure there's a United anything anymore. I stopped watching the news and am starting to feel much better. A bit of protecting myself from those with an agenda I don't agree with and ostrich-therapy I suppose.

@@olfoundryman8418 The north, also know as "the Union troops" kept the United States name. The south adopted the "Confederate States of America or CSA.
Perry, that looks good! I never meant it to be a challenge, just a suggestion. As I watched, I kept yelling at you that you were forgetting the prong! How about using the prong as one of the vent tube?
Yeah, I've got to come up with something that will cause me to remember. They're tto much work to leave something like that out.
I bought an OLD reproduction buckle from an auction and want a copy to wear without ruining the original in my collection. I have made a silicone mold and a hard wax copy, but I plan to sand cast as you did here. Instead of lost wax casting, I'll use the wax to create the sand casting mold. I'm planning to make the plain oval buckle as was shown to you... with a small loop and knob to attach to the belt all underneath the oval buckle, if that makes sense. I have lots of experience with casting as I am a jeweler, but this will be my biggest ( metal volume) casting project to date. I really enjoyed your video and you showed the process very well. I feel alot more confident moving forward having seen this done now. I will be subscribing and checking out some more vids for sure! Great job, and I'd love to see the finished product you got with this buckle! Did you add the "knob" after or recast the buckle? Thanks for the great vid!

Thanks so much. I'm ashamed to say that I never went back to that buckle and fixed it. I really should do more belt buckles. Seemed like that was all I was casting for a while then for some reason just stopped.

@@swdweeb that is sad to hear! It was a beautiful casting! Sometimes you gotta get out of your "box"... me casting a belt buckle is stepping out of my "box". Its good for ya! I appreciate the support and will hopefully be adding more videos. I do lots of cool stuff I'm sure people would love to see... I just rarely think to film any of it Haha! Unfamiliar with buckles with prongs so I have no idea what it looks like in the pattern BUT would it be possible to create a hole/cavity/divot in the back of the pattern to remind you something had to be fitted there?
What did you use to smooth out the lines in the print?
I’ve actually done that. It didn’t help. I still forgot it. I need to put a lock on my furnace lid with a note that says “did you put the prong in?” Even still I fear I’ll find a way to forget it. ;-)
It must be difficult to restrain oneself when the metal in the cauldron is ready and waiting

Most of my molds are 3-D printed. They're plastic with body filler and paint. Then I sand them as smooth as I can

@@swdweeb I've been thinking about getting a 3d printer. any thoughts on vid's to learn how to do the 3d modeling and slicing and such?
@@jameshauge852 Well, it depends on the modelling software that you use. Most peole seem to use Fusion3D. There are tons of videos out there on how to do various things. I used Designspark mechanical. They have getting started stuff built in to the software that was how I got started. I personally found Fusion to hard to learn. I gave up after about 10 minutes. But as I said, most people seem to be using it so understand that my not using it is all on my being impatient.
Regarding slicing, I know of two tools. Prusa Slic3r and Cura. I prefer Cura about 198 times more than slic3r. I've run multiple side by side tests and Cura always gives me a better print. That may just be my printer but...
So, I model in Designspark, save the file as an stl and drag that stl into Cura to get the gcode file.

It was, the temperature was actually pretty mild the whole time we were there. Things were still green as well ;-) Even the fireworks in the south weren't an issue.
Never get into CSA belt buckles. There was no standard so each state designed there own. Even within the States they varied between units. My son is into Civil War reenactments and it will drive you mad trying to buy them.
I actually read that. I also read that because a lot of them were so poorly made in the south that they're really easy to counterfeit.
