I wouldn't disregard _not fit for drinking_ signs. It can sometimes come from tanks on the premises which don't get cleaned out and that can get pretty skanky or there are still some premises which have at least some part of their plumbing system that hasn't been updated and still contains _some_ lead pipework.

Good to know mate, thanks for the advice, I'll pin this comment so other know, I never thought about old piping and water coming from tanks, cheers mate 👍🏻👊🏻😊

@@TheUrbanMotorhome (as one example) Some hot water systems use a cold water header tank to store water in the roof space to feed the hot water system. While it's not considered best practice, it's not unheard of to tap into the pipework before the hot water cylinder for a cold water feed to an outhouse or similar. This is fine for washing your hands, and at a pinch boiling for a cup of tea, but you wouldn't want to drink it directly given that they are often uncovered and that every plumber has a story or at least knows someone who has a story of finding a dead pigeon or mouse in one of those tanks.

not many of the garages in that town have taps still connected now your very lucky. hope it lasts. if ever you want to check if water is on mains or from a tank (tank being potentially dangerous) try putting your finger over the tap end to stop the flow. if mains you will not be able to stop the flow. if tank fed you will be able to stop the flow. apparently.

The easiest way to check if it's drinking water or water from a tank is to put your thumb over the tap while running. If your thumb stops the water it's tank water, and if it can't stop the water it's fresh from the pipe as the pressure is too much for your thumb to stop it. 🙂👍

The reason for not drinking water signs is because the water has been softened. There is a very small chance someone could have an allergic reaction to the softening chemical. If you use a tap at a cemetery or sports ground ect always run the tap well first. Catch the first bit in a clear container, if it looks yellowey it may contain Legionella which can be fatal. Best to run an infrequently used tap for three minutes to be safe. Must public buildings should flush Thier taps regularly to comply with Legionella legislation as they can be fined if there is an outbreak.
Personally I would use a graveyard as long as the tap is flushed well before use. It's dead quiet and the residents don't complain!!

As has been stated it can only be classified as drinking water if it comes direct from the mains instead of via a storage tank. This used to be a much bigger issue in the past when the storage tank may have been of rusty steel instead of modern plastic. When the Health Inspector called at Fawlty Towers he found a dead pigeon floating in the water tank (Ok I know thats fiction but it could actually happen) Even if the tank is covered the chlorine in the water evaporates off allowing bacteria to grow. So it really depends on how much water is being used and flowing through the tank to keep it clean
By the same logic the water stored in a motorhome storage tank can't be classified as drinking water, wherever it came from.

We sometimes top at a relatives. We have learnt to be really tight arsed with it so it lasts a week. I buy bottled for cooking and drinking, we dont entirely trust our water system. If there is a public tap we use it. Water cost £1.832 per cubic metre!! It costs just 18p to fill a tank on a moho for 100 litres. We are vastly overcharged on the UK for everything.

I think the biggest problem with contamination of water is either old lead pipes or people contaminating the actual tap, probably the worst of the two sources of contamination. Probably doesn’t hurt to carry an antibacterial spray or wipes to clean the tap before using and as you say draw plenty water from the tap before using the water.

Hi mate, I totally get that 100% but like I said in the video, I ask the pub and the garage so if they didn't want me to they can say no there and then and if they say yes I think it's safe to assume they are ok with that.
As for the local garages me and my family have rented them for years with them putting the cost up each year and giving nothing more in return not even maintenance so taking some water here and there I don't feel bad about at all. That and the fact that I see many many people (who do rent a garage) using them taps to wash their cars again at least i'm pulling the water to good use, rather than down the drain with added chemicals.
All that being said if there was a service at any of these places or anywhere else like they have in europe that you can put a £1 in and get 5 mins or X litres of water I'd happily pay.
