Yay for the Mistborn series! The Hero of Ages is SO fantastic, probably my favorite in the series! I am reading Era 2 now actually and it is so good as well.
I just read My Best Friend’s Exorcism and as a horror reader I can definitely say that its not too bad in terms of horror and instead has a more humorous tone, and focuses on coming-of-age issues and nostalgia instead of gore and horror! So I’d say its perfect for you since you’re not too acquainted with horror :))
I have Gods of Jade and Shadow, and Mexican Gothic on my list as well - I agree that they all sound intriguing. I am also hoping to read at least one by the end of the year.
I've read both Gods of Jade and Shadow and Mexican Gothic and I love them both so much! I am also currently reading her other book Velvet Was the Night and am really enjoying this too. I don't think particularly there is anywhere to start, just I think that if you don't like one I would still try another because all her books I've read so far are very different.
Oooh I will be so interested to hear your thoughts on Gods of Jade and Shadow - I seemed to be reading a different book to everyone else 👀 Still so intrigued by Mexican Gothic though!!
I have Mexican Gothic and Gods of Jade and Shaddow on my TBR too! Ooo I read My Best Friend's Exorcism and had a great time!! It's really creepy but also a fun time with all the 80s nostalgia and pop culture references! I was also surprisingly moved by the end... You should pick it up soon because it would make a great summer read with some of it being set in a beach house (or it may be lake house.. it's been a while since I read it..) Would love to hear your thoughts :)
I'm awful at leaving just the last book to be read! I think subconsciously I expect it to be bad. I didn't make it all the way through throne of glass to never read Kingdom of Ash (it's also ssssoooooo long) but I can't bring my self to do it 😭
I ended up giving Mexican Gothic and Gods of Jade and shadow 4 stars each although I must admit I preferred Gods of Jade and shadow over Mexican Gothic. I'll be reading My Best friends exorcism in October as a Halloween read as it sounds great and I've heard good things about it.
I've read both The Beautiful Ones and Gods of Jade and Shadow. I should warn you that the blurb of The Beautiful Ones is a bit misleading. You won't see a lot of telekinesis, just a heads up, it is more of a character driven novel than plot based. It is however my favourite this year so far. Gods of Jade and Shadow had more plot to it. It is more based on the quest/journey-trope and the atmosphere is really good.
I actually plan on reading Hero of Ages super soon. I’m doing a project where I’m finishing 4 series that I’ve loved the other books in them. I’ve also read My Best Friends Exorcism and I really enjoyed it! I think there’s a Spotify playlist too of 80s music specifically for the book but I may be wrong about that.
I really enjoyed The Stone Sky, it was a great ending to that series and explained so much! I also really enjoyed Mexican Gothic, very creepy. I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the books on your list.
I really liked Mexican Gothic - The Beautiful Ones is probably going to be my next read once I finish Empire of Gold... Other than that, I also want to finish the Mistborn trilogy this year, as well as The Poppy War trilogy, and Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
If you are interested in getting into horror, I feel like Mexican Gothic is a great mix. Its definitely gothic but it definitely gave me "indie horror film" vibes. I am currently trying to finish the Mistborn trilogy as well. They are so long and intricate though! --Nat
I had high hopes for Mexican Gothic and enjoyed the first half or so of the book. However, by the end I felt like it had completely gone off the rails. I'm still curious to check out her other books though.
I just read both Gods of Jade and Shadow and The Beautiful Ones. Both were very different but great in their own rights. I would just say don’t expect too much of the magic from The Beautiful Ones because you will be disappointed as it’s very much not a main part of the story (I thought at least).
Reading The Beautiful Ones by SMG…. It’s better described as a turn of the century love triangle. I get Room with a View vibes, but the magical realism throws in a different element which links two of the main characters. I love Gods of Jade and Shadow - its so different from anything out there and is not a retelling but inspired by the gods of ancient mesoamerica. Mexican Gothic is moody, creepy and perfectly gothic.
SMG’s books are all very different so if you’re into society life in the 19th century/drama/romance/character growth, i’d start with the beautiful ones. if you want something more unsettling/confusing/gross/with an isolated location and lots of themes, then go for mexican gothic idk about gods of jade and shadow but i’ve heard it’s a journey book
I loved the creepy vibes of Mexican Gothic it would be a great spooky season read. Gods of Jade and Shadow is a really fun story too. The main character is learning how far she will go to accomplish her dreams.
I also felt indifferent about the 2nd book of The Broken Earth Trilogy, and I also felt lukewarm about the third book 😬 But it's always satisfying to finish a series! 🥲
I'm almost done with the dark tower series And the of blood and bone trilogy can't wait to read jade legacy the final book in the jade city trilogy and I have three other trilogy's to finish the diabolic trilogy Suzanne young new trilogy and the stone sky I will read it in September and stormlight archives already read way of Kings and words of radiance
For some reason, there is something that really makes me want to read Gods of Shade and Shadow! As for Vicious Spirits, I really enjoyed it. At first I thought I wouldn't like it as much as the first one (Wicked Fox) because I really disliked the male character that becomes a main character in the second book; but in the end, I ended up loving Vicious Spirits: Dokkaebi WAY MORE! (and the same can be said about the male character lol) 💖😂🙄
Could you please please please try and fit in the second book of the FBBA series a kingdom of flesh and fire I promise you, you won't regret it. This book is just WooooW!!!
The Beautiful Ones is like Jane Austen with magicians! Mexican Gothic is very boring in the middle. Haven't read /don't care about Gods of Jade and Shadow. Excited about Velvet was the Night!
I think the mistborn ending makes sense but I do not understand why everyone adores it and calls it the best ending they’ve read. It was my least favourite of the series
Personally, I think My Best Friends Exorcism is his best work, so I’ll be excited to see what you make of it! Happy reading!
Yay for the Mistborn series! The Hero of Ages is SO fantastic, probably my favorite in the series! I am reading Era 2 now actually and it is so good as well.
The only Silvia Moreno Garcia I have read is Mexican Gothic but they all sound so good! Good luck with your TBR

I’ve read an absolutely adored Mexican Gothic! The vibes were everything, defos a cosy read with a cup of coffee ☕️ enjoy x
Ugh yes girl, I’m TERRIBLE at finishing series too! I start sooo many just to get a taste & feel for the author & their writing and never finish. 😭
I have Gods of Jade and Shadow, and Mexican Gothic on my list as well - I agree that they all sound intriguing. I am also hoping to read at least one by the end of the year.

One of my reading goals this year was to complete the Mistborn trilogy; I just started Hero of Ages yesterday.
I'm awful at leaving just the last book to be read! I think subconsciously I expect it to be bad. I didn't make it all the way through throne of glass to never read Kingdom of Ash (it's also ssssoooooo long) but I can't bring my self to do it 😭
Mexican Gothic was incredible, and its a great spooky read for autumn!

I enjoyed Mexican Gothic! It's kinda slow in the beginning but the ending is *chef's kiss*.
I now have 2 ARCs by Silvia Moreno Garcia and mexican-gothic and have read none.... I can't wait to get to them!
I really enjoyed The Stone Sky, it was a great ending to that series and explained so much! I also really enjoyed Mexican Gothic, very creepy. I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the books on your list.

Honestly narrowing down my books to a reasonable number to read before the end of the year seems impossible so kudos! 🤣🤣
Mexican Gothic is perfect for spooky season evenings, it's creepy and unsettling, I loved it

Mexican Gothic very very creepy and well written! I am sure you will love it!! I’d start there I have not read the other two but heard they are good!
Me realizing there are only 3,5 months left of the year 👁️👄👁️
Relatable 😂
I had high hopes for Mexican Gothic and enjoyed the first half or so of the book. However, by the end I felt like it had completely gone off the rails. I'm still curious to check out her other books though.

The Beautiful Ones because you will be disappointed as it’s very much not a main part of the story (I thought at least).
I’ve seen more people talk about the romance side of things so not expecting too much in terms of fantasy!

Gods of Jade and Shadow was the best of the three imo. I'd start there.
Not read any of these but really want to read The Mistborn Series!!
The first book is so good!
I loved Gods of Jade and Shadow, got kinda bored of Mexican Gothic but I'm sure I'll pick it up again!
Ooo yes I need to read the best friends exorcism too!
I loved the creepy vibes of Mexican Gothic it would be a great spooky season read. Gods of Jade and Shadow is a really fun story too. The main character is learning how far she will go to accomplish her dreams.

I'm dying to read both Mexican Gothic and Gods of Jade and Shadow!!
Gods of Jade and Shadow was a fantastic, enthralling book I gave it a 4 star. Mexican Gothic was creepy with a great twist at the end another 4 star.
@@Books_BrewsandBeyond I can't wait to read them wowee, I've got Gods of Jade and Shadow so I'm going to read that next!
Love the mistborn series and yes it's a good ending. Read Mexican gothic a liked it both haven't read more of her books but want to
I have so many books I’m in the middle of, or I’m in the middle of a massive series. 😬 it’s a problem. Lol
I'm almost done with the dark tower series
And the of blood and bone trilogy can't wait to read jade legacy the final book in the jade city trilogy and I have three other trilogy's to finish the diabolic trilogy
Suzanne young new trilogy and the stone sky I will read it in September and stormlight archives already read way of Kings and words of radiance
I just finished hero of ages recently. Well of ascension was awful and I hate it but hero of ages? 🤌🏻

I need to read Mexican Gothic it is sitting on my shelf looking at me
Are you gonna have an end of year dothingathon?
I’ve had Mexican gothic for months so I think I’ll give it a go soon 😀
Mexican Gothic was a strong 4⭐️ read for me(I actually DNFed Gods of Jade and Shadow)
Could you please please please try and fit in the second book of the FBBA series a kingdom of flesh and fire I promise you, you won't regret it. This book is just WooooW!!!
Interesting.
i haven't read mistborn yet, so i can't speak on the ending, but i'd say the last olympian was a perfect ending to the percy jackson series!!!
I started with Mexican Gothic it was great!
Love books
The Beautiful Ones is like Jane Austen with magicians! Mexican Gothic is very boring in the middle. Haven't read /don't care about Gods of Jade and Shadow. Excited about Velvet was the Night!
I love Gods of Jade and Shadow
🖤🌿
🥰🥰🥰
I've heard so many good things about Mexican Gothic
I think the mistborn ending makes sense but I do not understand why everyone adores it and calls it the best ending they’ve read. It was my least favourite of the series
You can read all of that !! Read read! Read more!!
Motivation for you🌼😆👆🏻👆🏻
Man I'm struggling today. I can barely even read the font in the thumbnail. Time for a damn nap... After I watch this video... 🤣
Mexican gothic is not perfect and there is some creepy stuff but I love it
🙈
