Always interesting to hear about the day-to-day of tournaments and watch high-level Risk. My two cents: 100% agree that it's better to act as if software feedback goes nowhere. Feedback is all one big Telephone game from feedback-gatherers to decision-makers, at least in software projects I've worked on. It sometimes works, but... maybe better to try to sort things out rather than wait. For sanity's sake. Thanks for putting out all these videos!
Yeah I've come to realize this. I'll just keep trying to influence positive change in ways that are effective. Like helping grow the audience for Risk.
24:35 "Don't make more cosmetics while you have functional design problems with your game" Very valid feeling to have, but your graphic design guy isn't going to be fixing the game; he's only good for making cosmetics :} and that's what they get to sell for more cash. I'm glad he won in the end. I don't feel like it is fair to win just because you're playing on the faster platform. Still, it is pretty satisfying to roll someone up nice and quick on PC!! I love doing it, love watching it, and it is painful to watch the poor mobile player struggle to slowwwwwwwly roll along
'your graphic design guy isn't going to be fixing the game; he's only good for making cosmetics :} and that's what they get to sell for more cash.' The recent attention that has been brought to the game via this channel has shown me that my suspicion is likely true, that the game of Risk has for more potential than the Devs realize. Yes, they 'should' have people working on fixing the problems but they don't. With a vibrant and growing competitive scene and a ranking system that makes sense and actually rewards people for playing they stand to make far more money than adding more dice skins IMHO. I am not a game developer but I have a reasonably good intuition vis a vis systems design and deconstructing a logical process that provides players with the right incentives to play. I'm open to being totally wrong too.
@@TheKillPeteStrategy shame they aren't giving it more attention. Im just curious, what is the difference between Green disconnecting and then coming back before the bot attacks vs Green just idling and not doing anything?
Fairly new watching your channel Pete. i played a lot of Risk/Castle Risk back in my day, so it's pretty familiar to me. i had one question though. In this online version, how are the dice changed? In the board game the defense gets up to 2 dice and the attacker gets up to 3 or 5 depending. The defense wins ties, so any roll of double 6's for instance always results in a loss of 2 armies for the attacker. So, going offensive is encouraged but riskier. Many a game that i won had the brave troops of Madagascar (for instance) hold off a much larger army with lucky rolls. There was always the real chance that throwing your 50 stack into a 6 stack would result in complete destruction of the 50 stack. Not often, but often enough, that it was never a guaranteed victory. Watching your games here, it seems like the rolls have been weighted. i sometimes see a fairly even exchange, like an attacker with 80 against a defender with 30 and they both lose 30 troops, but i never see a fantastic and back breaking defensive string of rolls, like happens in the board game. Have i just missed them, or is the game fundamentally different? Thanks.
@@TheKillPeteStrategy Yes, the 5 dice was probably one of the special rules sets for some castle risk variant. Anyway, im still wondering why i havent seen any particularly good defensive stands like ive seen a million times in the board game. If the dice or randomizer program in this game is set to minimize or avoid streaks, like the ones that happen in real life, that could explain it, but it wouldnt be a particularly good representation of randomness.

Nice game. Hard to question your plays since it depends on how your opponents reacted. I’m slightly surprised that yellow suicided to take 4th. Would’ve thought he would choose to take out the bot for 3rd. Is there any difference between 3rd and 4th in terms of ratings?
Hey Pete, does UnderTheGun have a UA-cam, or does he post elsewhere. I've been addicted to Risk the past few months and gobbled up all the content from you, Fil, Slin, Olive and anyone else I can find. But I'm also a huge Civ player (I've got like 3,500 hours of Civ VI on steam and probably another 200-300+ on PS4).
I had a weird game earlier. Me and this guy allied up early like you and white but ally decided to break me before we ended the other 2 guys. So I allied with them and got my OG ally out first.
In regards to "botting", it's important to know that the AI/bots follow very different "rules of engagement" compared to humans. The biggest one being that they rarely take more than 6-8 territories, if that, each turn even if they have a clean kill ( I once saw a game where the bot left Pete with one territory and one army, despite having the kill - a game Pete came back to win). Knowing this, as long as I can mantain enough troop bonus to take at least 8-10 territories a turn I can almost always whittle down a bot even if it has an 100+ troop advantage (something that would be all but impossible against a human players). I can therefore somewhat ignore a bot and focus on the other human players. Knowing this, "botters" will leave the game, come back when their army has hopefully been allowed to grow to a size a human opponent would never be allowed, and destroy their opponents.
I had a game like this it was me and an ally for the whole game vs 1 other and i got suicided, my alliy killed me and then lost the game, absolutely wonderful
Yellow gave the game up from the start. The only thing I can assume is he was bored and hates NA. He didn't take NA for turns and turns and turns and turns when it was free and let the bot eventually take over. Similarly, no offense, when the bot was gumming up NA for you and white mid/late and you started to take territory, I was hoping to see you push up and clear out the majority of purple and allow white to move full stack to Asia with you locking the bot on 1 or 2 positions or bot completely gone, and White holding single spot territory in NA trading cards with you while you both stacked w/ 12 territories. (Basically, seemed like you were so ahead you could clear out the randomness caused by the bot and trade cards in NA. Seemed like missed opportunity)
I really love Fixed over progressive as it just jives more with how I like to play, very slow and methodical, while both card styles make positioning important, I like Fix's rationale more (territory bonuses and access to card farming) more than progressive. Though the one thing progressive wins hands down on is creating a definitive end. I had a game last night that hit the three hour mark with 4 people still in, all of us had around 250 in a single stack and nobody would make a move as you'd just guarantee yourself and whoever you decided to hit would go 4th and 3rd. I ended up breaking two players bonuses (leaving the guy who was most friendly with me alone) and suicide into the guy with the nominal lead, as I was sick of the game by then. Maybe it was just the map (Verne's island) or poor luck in very passive players (myself included, I was up nearly 100 over another player at one point but decided to simply sit....god I am still annoyed at myself for that.), but I definitely understand why folks would prefer progressive after that.
I noticed that someone commented on some players having fast speed etc. I believe this is actually a very important point as RISK is first a foremost a strategy game. It should be decided upon strategy and nothing else. Just because you have good keyboard skills doesn't mean you should gain an advantage over those that don't. It was a board game to start with and shouldn't be treated like another STARCRAFT or AOE etc.. where real time action is part of the game. Of course you can't have unlimited time between turns but clearly 90 secs or 2 mins would be more appropriate. I mean players will use all the time only when they need to and play fast turns whenever they can. In fact taking more time on each turn may actually make the games shorter.
I started playing this week and I have to say I'm really disappointed with how the bots behave, I used to play this until the early hours of the morning with school friends on weekends and had high hopes On a few occasions I've played against incredibly salty or non cooperative human players who ruin the game with suicides or actively give bots a winning position on their way out of the game Can't say I'm impressed by the sportsmanship but the bit behaviour has to be the worst thing for me
I have a theory that the vast majority of players don't actually want a good AI that can beat them consistently. Also a good Risk AI would be very tough to code since risk is way more complicated than something like chess.
You are going to call me a scum but I use the bot out strategy. When we are 3 players left i stay idle for like 3 minutes so the other players attack eachother thinking that I am going to stay a bot and it would be easy to kill me. Then I come back and eat the leftovers. You may not like this type of gameplay but I think it adds to the complexity of the game. Its like deceiving the other players that you are a new player by playing slow. Its another type of deceiving to me, people need to know the game mechanics and be more familiar with strategies to keep up with people like me. I dont see it as something evil. Instead of waiting for 2 hours for someone to suicide into the other I can just make it happen by fooling them a lot quicker.
You may ask how I react when someone bots out. I just wait 5 minutes before making a move if I have more troops than the other player. If I see any suspicious movement like coming back to the game and trying to bot out again, I dont kill the other player. And if Im the weaker one I pray that the other player wont semi-suicide kill me. Fixed games end up in a stalemate and take too long most of the time, until someone suicides that is. Yeah the psychological game of trying to not piss off players for them to not suicide into you is fun sometimes. However it can get boring if nothings happening for a long time.
I think the game needs to design some way to prevent this from happening. You are exploiting a bad system in a way that works. Smg could update their fair play rules to make this cheating or prevent multiple reconnects.
You might be playing with the wrong settings or totally the wrong board game if you prefer abusing game mechanics to actually playing the game. The game should just not let anyone return if they bot for a whole turn (so running out of time on 1 turn is fine but if you don't click anything on the next turn you're out and can't return).
Salty yellow suicide was what cost Pete the game That’s a scummy play If you see the writing on the wall and you dive the person with the biggest advantage on the way out that’s just crazy

I don't think so. He has a twitch
Once I seen it i can't unsee it, but defo could rock a half decent Hitler impersonation with that hair
Lol maybe I don't do my hair like that then!
@@TheKillPeteStrategy would fit for every world domination win tbf 🤔😂😂
i absolutely love love love you, but i can’t help thinking of hitler when i see your side part. keep up the great risk content tho
I'm secretly an evil man.
I had a weird game earlier. Me and this guy allied up early like you and white but ally decided to break me before we ended the other 2 guys. So I allied with them and got my OG ally out first.

bless you
In regards to "botting", it's important to know that the AI/bots follow very different "rules of engagement" compared to humans.

MR REGINALD IS A STRONK CHONK :D
😻
How dare you let Reg be 26 minutes late for dinner 😭😭😭😭😭 that's animal cruelty. Call the purrrlice!!!!
He usually bugs me more aggressively when he starts to get hungry.
I had a game like this it was me and an ally for the whole game vs 1 other and i got suicided, my alliy killed me and then lost the game, absolutely wonderful
Ugh, not such a good friend eh.
Any chance you'd add a $1/month token membership level on Patreon?
I could for sure. I recall Patreon specifically telling me not to.
My guy pete with the FRESH cut, looking great, but not as great as this gameplay!
Lol! Thank you Joel!
💀
I live in fear that one day i will see myself doing something stupid in one of petes old games haha
Hey man I make a lot of mistakes too
Yeeeeeeees Big pp pete
We agree.
So the summary of this game is...stove and cowboy are shockingly stupid? I can live with that.
🤣🚫
A pete video? It's Friday? He's Playing FIXED?!?!!!
🙏
I read this in Norm Macdonalds voice.
Why is not taking cards an advantage for green? Don't you want more cards?
I don't think it's intentional.
Yellow play made no sense to me; he had ample opportunity to take North America.
Should have taken Africa when the bot was still in the game :)
So grumpy today
I was going through a rough patch
You hit your cat's tum tum a bit too hard for my taste lol
He loves it!
I started playing this week and I have to say I'm really disappointed with how the bots behave, I used to play this until the early hours of the morning with school friends on weekends and had high hopes
On a few occasions I've played against incredibly salty or non cooperative human players who ruin the game with suicides or actively give bots a winning position on their way out of the game
Can't say I'm impressed by the sportsmanship but the bit behaviour has to be the worst thing for me
I have a theory that the vast majority of players don't actually want a good AI that can beat them consistently.
Also a good Risk AI would be very tough to code since risk is way more complicated than something like chess.
Imagone sending alliance requests and folks who got thise requests took it the wrong way and started attacking your territory
Haha definitely happens some times.
@@TheKillPeteStrategy oh that's messed up !! Hahaa

A kiwi wins it🤐☠️🤡👻👻👻
You are going to call me a scum but I use the bot out strategy.
Salty yellow suicide was what cost Pete the game
That’s a scummy play
If you see the writing on the wall and you dive the person with the biggest advantage on the way out that’s just crazy
