I have to admit, I adore magical realism, it's so clever, nuanced & quirky. In Australia, one of our great classics is 'Cloudstreet' by Tim Winton, & this is a novel that has some features of magic realism. I am in love with 'Cloudstreet' so, have been drawn to magical realism as a genre most of my reading life: Neil Gaiman, Haruki Murakami, Isabel Allende, Laura Esquirel & Salman Rushdie are among my favourites. You're right, it's so good that we are all different, & escape artists at the same time.
I think I have come to terms with the fact that I do accept magical realism in a lot of books now. I also love Gaiman and Murakami but i struggle with others writing magical realism. I guess the genre is not the problem for me anymore. I am still searching for the answers to what I prefer to read and they are coming to me slowly but steadily :)
I really look forward to following more of your adventure with books. Along with magical realism, I also read a lot of classics, fantasy & poetry (especially contemporary). Books galore!
I struggle with MR too. Be fantasy or be nothing. Zero stars.
I think you might like Memoirs of a master forger by William Heaney (actually Graham Joyce). The main character, William Heaney, sees demons that cling to people feeding on and exacerbating their mental issues. I found it really clever and engaging.

I'm a huge fan of urban fantasy, and the general genre of "supernatural" where the magical elements or beings are infiltrating an otherwise ordinary world. I'm not sure if that fits your definition of magical realism. One of my favorite books in this category is Babel by R F Kuang. In that book it would have made so much less sense to go for an all out fantasy setting because the author was trying to make a very clear statement about our actual world and its history.
I have not read it, but I think my conclusion is that I don’t mind it being magic realism if the story is good, but the story probably has to be better than it would have had to be without the magical elements. I have considered reading Babel, but I ended up buying Poppy War instead, but not read it yet..
the fact is there are very few writers who are really good, I want to read that Murakami book. hey some people are born to write, that's what Isaac Bashevis Singer said. Read his first novel Satan In Goray. Masterpiece of supernatural horror.

maybe you like 'Klokkemakeren'by Gert Nygårdshaug, it also a bit philosofical and reminded me of 'Sofies Verden'

Couldn´t agree more to you. I hate magical realism, I remember only novel where I was able to accept it. The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk, because it was quite subtle there. And Kafka of course: The Metamorphosis.
Oooh! I do want to read more from Tokarczuk, but I think I will start with "flights" BoJ seems a bit frightening size-wise.. I do have some Kafka in my shelf, but it´s not been read yet. Waiting for the right mood :)
Murakami is seen as one the best magical realism authors, though. The Alchemist is just... We can talk about that book some other time, I think. Preferably over a cup of coffee.
Also, Rivers of London is also very humorous. I think it's funny on top of everything else, which makes it even better. Just wanted to say that.
I don´t know if my blood pressure will benefit from talking too much about The Alchemist but I do enjoy coffee! Yes, RoL are entertaining and funny! Have to get hold of book number four soon! :)

I think in children's novels the unrealistikk stuff had a good story as background just as you want adult 's novels to have( som du etterlyser for voksen literatur😀)I think,you are right. Therfore I love 'The Lord of the rings'or 'A Christmas carol'
A good background story is all I am asking for.. Going to read A christmas carol this year! I think.. I hope..:)

Kafka goes directly to the issues of life and leaves one with awful conclusions which require supernatural answers.
