Almost had me fooled in the beginning 😂 Just found this video after cleaning my muddy Hokas. I used the shower along with a toothbrush with soft bristles and some toothpaste. Took the shoes apart (laces and inner soles) before the actual cleaning process. Now they are left for drying overnight. Fingers crossed they will come out a bit cleaner and smelling better tomorrow. Good idea stuffing the shoes with some news paper to pull out the moist more quickly.
I have to confess that I do clean my shoes in the machine on cold water on the gentile cycle (front loader). (And air dry of course) Maybe I’ve been lucky but its has worked for me so far.
It's not such a big issue on a cold wash Chris and if you haven't had issues, it's all good 😊 Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏
I just take dirty trail shoes along in the shower. I don't remove anything because I'm lazy. I just rinse them off, use my hands to clean off the dirt and set them down on an old towel. Also: that intro was evil. Well done.
Unfortunately we don't get a lot of snow in Cornwall 🤔 I suppose I'll have to keep using the shower! Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏
Down here in Oz the majority of laundry powders are designed to operate in cold water. This means they aren't hard on shoes so it's feasible to use the washing machine. I was dubious at first but that was about 30 years ago. A healthy splash of cleaning vinegar in the soaking bucket is great for eliminating odours too. The worst i've done to a shoe was when i briefly lived in Europe and didn't adjust the radiator panel before sitting my shoes on top........inventing the ultra-rocker was not my intention.
Opps that's exactly why we shouldn't put our shoes on direct heat Aaron😂 You should have got a patent for the rocker you'd be worth a fortune! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
What about using a stain removal spray or soap of some kind to help with stubborn marks on shoes? And how about a splash of dettol laundry cleanser (which I use with smelly sports wear) to help freshen things up a bit?
We don't have a newspaper any more so kitchen roll works just as well. I usually replace the kitchen roll with fresh once its soaked up as much water as it can. I don't usually remove the laces. If I've driven to the trail (observe Covid-19 restrictions!) I use a bin liner to keep the car mats clean.
Thank you for the great and well presented information! I knew you shouldn't pop them in the washing machine, and this being my first time on this channel, I was at a click away from closing it, before the comments making me realize it's only a joke xD It definitely helped me out, being new to running and running shoes and all of that. Cannot wait to give these guys a proper cleaning and get running again (didn't run through the winter and colder periods) Keep up the good work!
That's very kind, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and sorry for the joke! 😊 It's great you've found the channel, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
Awesome Max, nearly! 😂 Glad you enjoyed the tips and the insoles are made by a company called Currex. They make really solid insoles for running shoes 👍 Thanks for watching 🙏
Great review Loyd. My wash process is If super, thoroughly mucky, big hard bristle brush outside with cold water. All shoes, thereafter, into shower as first thing washed before yourself, brush with same hard bristle brush to remove 95-99% of all debris from outsole, midsole, upper. Leave laces in, take inner soles out. After this near perfect removal of all debris, all into front loader washing machine, with dirty clothes on a cool cycle 30degs, delicate cycle. Dry outside. Perfect, no materials, adhesive or structural affects.....as new, everytime. Absolutely easiest thing to maintain shoes to fullest 500km+ ranges.
I get home from the run, straight in the garden, get the hose and give them a good blasting in and out all over, I then stuff microfibre cloths in them and stand them up in pastic box to dry off. I then run a different shoe the next day and do the same. The following day the 1st pair is ready to go again. Works a treat.
Should I not use any soap at all?? What if it needs some cleaning product to help the mud get out better, what do u recommend? Dish soap, bar soap, a specific detergent? Thanks for the video!! 🔥♥️
Hi Rana Really glad you enjoyed the video. I personally don't use any soap when I clear my shoes, just warm water 👍 If you want to use soap I'd make sure it something delicate, you can get soaps that are designed specifically for cleaning training. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
The trick is to not let the mud dry. Back at my car i grab a big brush stick my feet ( with shoes still on of course ) in a nice puddle and give the shoe a nice scrub while the mud is fresh and voila !! You can always finish the job later on but that's plenty enough for me
My handy hint - Like me, buy a house in the Dales, that way your guaranteed to have clean shoes, due to having to run or wade through flood water every time you go for a run during winter.. Trust me..every time. If your lucky, that flood water may even be in your house when you get back. Cleaning you shoes effortlessly. On second thoughts, this idea might cost you a few hundred grand and the wife tends to cry a little as she floats past. So, buy a garden hose and a brush. Clean them before you get back inside the house.
Have always kept my shoes clean. Very fussy. As a kid (and a grown up) I was always sat on my front door step on a Saturday morning cleaning and polishing my football boots before the game. With my running shoes, road and trail, I've always 'banged off' any excess dirt and then used baby wipes to clean them. Yes, I did say baby wipes !!!
I was exactly the same Ian! Always played football, rugby and cricket in clean boots 👍 Now it's just crossed over into my running. Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
very useful and practical video! I'm glad to see that I've been cleaning my shoes properly so far :) That's also my way to rinse the shoes by the shower :) And that's looks great idea to use nail brush for better cleaning upper and outsole. I was worried to brush the shoes, particularly upper as wanted to avoid to do some kind of damage of the upper. But outsoles, yes, I'm used to brush them as well :) Thanks Loyd for confirming me that I can continue cleaning my shoes as I do, but a bit improve the process by using softer brush on the upper, too. :) All the Best!
Glad you found it useful Peter 👍 Yeah the nail brush seems to work well because it's not to aggressive on the fabrics. Well done for looking after your shoes 😊 Thanks for watching 🙏
Well you had me there - I fell for that hook, line and sinker and was watching in absolute disbelief at the washing machine scene 😂😂 - so gullible. I definitely need to up my shoe cleaning game though!

Okay very nice. That's how I wash/clean my shoes except for the newspaper. Sometimes I don't remove the laces. It depends on the amount of mud and sand inside. I think the most important thing for me is not put it on direct sunlight.
I clean them in the sink like a dishes even the insoles-with soap and water and a cleaning sponge, for the laces: put them in a bowl with soap and water then to dry: leave them outside overnight.
It's surprising how much longer trail shoes will last if mud is cleaned off. Cleaning them as soon as possible after getting home makes it easier, before the mud has time to dry on. Learned this the hard way with XC spikes after a particularly muddy race. Left them until the next day and the mud had caked on, absolute nightmare.
It is getting harder and harder to find Paul! I tend to use the free local papers but even they are becoming hard to find 🤔 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
Thanks Brad, really glad you enjoyed the video. The insoles are from a company called Currex. I've used their insoles in some of my shoes for years, they make solid, long lasting insoles 👍 I put them in my Torrents because they give you a bit more underfoot protection on rocky trails 😊 Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏
Goretex uppers are great for muddy season. You can just rinse the dirt off. And since they are water repellent they won't even get wet if you rinse them.
I'm not a lover of Gore-Tex running shoes of I'm honest Valo. I find they loose a lot of breathability and can run quite hot. Also if you get water inside the shoe it can't get out 🤔 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
Urgh, I know what you mean, the trails around me have turned to ankle deep slop.. and it’s the first year I’ve had to avoid them on a regular basis because I’m not only a little fed up of having to wash a tonne of mud out after every run, but worried about the wear and tear with all the cleaning, and my bath drain filling up with dirt 🤪 🙁 I didn’t do it that often until recently and my shoes started to suffer from the lack of a real clean. As a result though I’ve noticed how my default inner souls really suck in dirt and because they are a foam material the shock absorption is really compromised.. so I’d say if you can’t be bothered to do all that every time, at least take out the inner soul, and give a good wash under the shower nozzle.. and get the mud dust out of them. My old cheapies started to become quite hard, even though I thought I was doing enough rinsing them off in a puddle.. the inner soul held on to that dirt and I didn’t realise because they looked fairly mud free. I guess you wouldn’t get that issue so much with gel inserts? But I’ve never liked the thought to swap out what came with the shoe, in case it messed with the fit.
I totally agree 👍 You're right it's amazing how much mud the insoles can soak up! The first time I started cleaning mine properly I was shocked. 😲 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
Yes nice one, ive been using a nail brush for years . Isn't it so dissapointing that the first half of the video isnt true😁 you got me with that one ! i was really anxious and thinking WTF !

I don't Amanda, I tend just to use warm water. I did use soap once many years ago and it didn't work. When I ran my shoes after washing them I kept getting soap bubbles coming from my shoes! 🤔 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊
My shoe cleaning regime usually consists of a kick into the cupboard and hope they're dry next time I need them! Although after watching this I may have to treat them to a good scrub!!
I don't Jason, I think it can harm the fabrics in the shoes 🤔 I did use it once many years ago and the first wet run after cleaning the shoes I started getting soap bubbles coming form my shoes! 😂 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏
What I do is put my shoe in the washer on cold. That way the shoe won’t bend at the heel. Wash on a light or delicate load. If you wash on hot, if there’s any plastic in the mesh of the shoe it will deform.
Yeap a cold wash should be OK but I still think the best way to clean them is by hand. Less chance of any damage to your shoes or washing machine 😊 Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
White shoes are almost impossible to keep clean with hand washing Tracey! Once the dirt has got in the white fabric it's very hard to get clean again 😒 Thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏
Sorry Harry, I couldn't resist it! 😂 It would of made a pretty lame video. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
I have a ? My insoles seem to move when I run thru water . they move to the back leaving my upper bottom foot right against the shoe it self very uncomfortable? Saucony peri. 9
@Run4A i believe around a year . 25 k is the longest runs to 5ks this only happens when they get complete y soaked going thru creeks or streams or ankle deep ?
@@tomhelfinstine9443 It might just be down to how old they are and how many miles you've run in them Tom. Maybe try a new pair of insoles or it might be time for a new pair? 🤔
Thanks Berny, glad you enjoyed the video. I tend not to use soap or shampoo when I clean my shoes, I find warm water does the job 👍 I'd say if you want to use something is go for a soap designed for cleaning running shoes. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏😊
It always seems to work ok Kris 🤔 Sometimes cracking can be because you are drying them out to quickly over something that's to hot? Thanks for watching 🙏
@@Run4Adventure yeah that’s what I’m getting at really. Wondering if the paper can offer enough protection against the heat. I suppose if you turn the dial down that’ll help too 👍
Ha ha 🤣 lol good joke with the Washing machine lol 😂....i'm using a little brush too et du savon de Marseille lol it works fine...good video 👍😁🇨🇵....one question ...do you have problems to clean Endorphin speed White?....for me it is grey ...can’t have it White anymore..🤨
Glad you enjoyed the washing machine segment 😂 White shoes are always a nightmare to keep clean, especially here in the UK! My Speed's are also a nice shade of grey now. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
I hose mine down outside the house as soon as I get back. That way I can hose down my legs at the same time and get the added benefit of the ice cold water aiding recovery in my knees, calf's and ankles. Not for the feint hearted but it keeps the mud outside.
I like it, clean your shoes and an ice bath all at the same time! 👌 Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
@@Run4Adventure yeah i can clean my legs, my shoes AND my dog all in one go but now after watching your video i'll just throw the dog and the shoes in the washing machine ;-)
Really fun video. Thank you for sharing. I've been thinking washing running shoe is something difficult, but I was always washing my shoe that way. Just because we got the special care of the new shoe, more specially it is expensive shoe. So... Thank you 🙏
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video Nguyen 😊 We should definitely take good care of our shies it really helps prolong the life! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏😊
Nicke video and topic 👍🏼 But really. Cleaning the shoes are ‘easy’. But how on earth do you get rid of that bad smell (from those shoes that didn’t get that cleaning)? 🤷🏼♂️
I think I must have been looking in a mirror watching you clean your shoes. Shower, nail brush, radiator, newspaper SNAP!! 👟🚿📰😁👌And yes I clean the soles too nothing wrong with that.
Wow, seems like you posted the April 1st movie early? 😂 Looking forward to the Crocs Trail Claw review though! Sounds like an epic trail shoe and much easier to clean I'm guessing?
I knew the washing machine was a joke!!! I called it before u revealed. Was thinking u are way too professional to do that. Haha. Looking fwd to the ASICS trail shoe.
I know what you mean Nick! Not the best colour way for a British winter. Mine are the same dirty, grey colour and it's such a shame 😒 I don't think there's anyway back from it. The good news is the new colour way for the Speed's is Black! Thanks for watching 🙏
I was silently screaming inside as you tossed washer pods in the washer. Two pods and high heat would probably separate any glue on the shoe. I put my shoes on my basement dehumidifier to dry mine after every run. My shoes never smell bad anymore.
Sorry Kevin but I couldn't resist it! Yeap if you keep your shoes clean and dry they won't ever smell 👍 Well done for looking after your kit and thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment 🙏
@@Run4Adventure love your channel. It's worked for me through 90+ degrees days, 32c. At 30 plus miles a week. This time of year it's all snow and slush. But our spring will bring with it some wonderful day wet, muddy and hot days.

I did use it once many years ago and the first wet run after cleaning the shoes I started getting soap bubbles coming form my shoes! 😂
Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏
I was just about to hit stop! Lucky the entry wasn't too long!
Sorry Gary I couldn't resist it! 😂
Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏
What I do is put my shoe in the washer on cold. That way the shoe won’t bend at the heel. Wash on a light or delicate load. If you wash on hot, if there’s any plastic in the mesh of the shoe it will deform.
Yeap a cold wash should be OK but I still think the best way to clean them is by hand. Less chance of any damage to your shoes or washing machine 😊
Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
@@Run4Adventure for sure
Have you ever hand washed white shoes. I just got the white speedgoats and made an awesome/terrible decision since I run Spartan races.
White shoes are almost impossible to keep clean with hand washing Tracey! Once the dirt has got in the white fabric it's very hard to get clean again 😒
Thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏
You hade me there!
Sorry about that, I couldn't help it! Hope you enjoy the video 😂
5:41 what if we don't have newspaper?
Newspaper does the job really well, I'm sure you could find some 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏
I genuinely thought you were going to stop the video after the washing machine bit and sitting on the sofa 😂😂
Sorry Harry, I couldn't resist it! 😂
It would of made a pretty lame video. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
Great video once more! :-) ... you now earned a real coffee :-)))
Cheers Roland, really appreciated 🙏
Thank you for this!! Great info!
Really glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching the channel 🙏
What brand are the socks you were wearing?
Stance socks Benjamin 👍
Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏
Both insoles and laces do fine in the washing machjine I find.
Cheers Gary 🙏
I have a ? My insoles seem to move when I run thru water . they move to the back leaving my upper bottom foot right against the shoe it self very uncomfortable? Saucony peri. 9
It can sometimes happen Tom, especially if it's an old shoe? How long have you been running in your Peregrines? 🤔
@Run4A i believe around a year . 25 k is the longest runs to 5ks this only happens when they get complete y soaked going thru creeks or streams or ankle deep ?
@@tomhelfinstine9443
It might just be down to how old they are and how many miles you've run in them Tom. Maybe try a new pair of insoles or it might be time for a new pair? 🤔
@@Run4Adventure thanks for your feedback.
great review, thank you! excuse me, no soap, shampoo or laundry powder in the cleaning process? best wishes!
Thanks Berny, glad you enjoyed the video. I tend not to use soap or shampoo when I clean my shoes, I find warm water does the job 👍
I'd say if you want to use something is go for a soap designed for cleaning running shoes. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏😊
Thank you so much! Very informative!
No problem Danny, thanks for watching and I'm glad you found the video helpful 🙏😊
Leaving mine over my heat run registers
Lloyd do you find the newspaper is enough protection to stop the uppers cracking?
It always seems to work ok Kris 🤔
Sometimes cracking can be because you are drying them out to quickly over something that's to hot?
Thanks for watching 🙏
@@Run4Adventure yeah that’s what I’m getting at really. Wondering if the paper can offer enough protection against the heat. I suppose if you turn the dial down that’ll help too 👍
Ha ha 🤣 lol good joke with the Washing machine lol 😂....i'm using a little brush too et du savon de Marseille lol it works fine...good video 👍😁🇨🇵....one question ...do you have problems to clean Endorphin speed White?....for me it is grey ...can’t have it White anymore..🤨
Glad you enjoyed the washing machine segment 😂
White shoes are always a nightmare to keep clean, especially here in the UK! My Speed's are also a nice shade of grey now. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
Excellent video. You’ve done such a great job there. Can I send my trail shoes to you to clean? 😆
Cheers Anthony 👍
Yeap, send them over and I'll get straight on to it! 😂
Thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏
I hose mine down outside the house as soon as I get back. That way I can hose down my legs at the same time and get the added benefit of the ice cold water aiding recovery in my knees, calf's and ankles. Not for the feint hearted but it keeps the mud outside.
I like it, clean your shoes and an ice bath all at the same time! 👌
Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's really appreciated 🙏
@@Run4Adventure yeah i can clean my legs, my shoes AND my dog all in one go but now after watching your video i'll just throw the dog and the shoes in the washing machine ;-)
@@mudsweatandtrails
Best comment ever! 😂😂😂
But please don't throw your dog in the washing machine!! 🐕👍
What if you ran it through the washer on cold water?
I'm not a fan of putting my shoes in the washing machine, even on a cold wash Edmund 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏
Really fun video. Thank you for sharing. I've been thinking washing running shoe is something difficult, but I was always washing my shoe that way. Just because we got the special care of the new shoe, more specially it is expensive shoe. So... Thank you 🙏
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video Nguyen 😊
We should definitely take good care of our shies it really helps prolong the life! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏😊
Nicke video and topic 👍🏼
But really. Cleaning the shoes are ‘easy’.
But how on earth do you get rid of that bad smell (from those shoes that didn’t get that cleaning)? 🤷🏼♂️
I'm not sure you can once they smell! This is why we should always clean and dry our shoes 😉
Thanks for watching Anders it's really appreciated 🙏
I think I must have been looking in a mirror watching you clean your shoes. Shower, nail brush, radiator, newspaper SNAP!! 👟🚿📰😁👌And yes I clean the soles too nothing wrong with that.
Awesome work Michael! A man after my own heart 👍
Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
Wow, seems like you posted the April 1st movie early? 😂 Looking forward to the Crocs Trail Claw review though! Sounds like an epic trail shoe and much easier to clean I'm guessing?
Sorry I couldn't resist it! 😂
Has the Croc Trail claw got a Carbon plate in? 😂 Thanks for watching mate, hooe you are fit and well 🙏
@@Run4Adventure 😂 I'll DM Walmsley now and let you know about the Crocs. I'm sure they do #gamechangers ;)
I knew the washing machine was a joke!!! I called it before u revealed. Was thinking u are way too professional to do that. Haha. Looking fwd to the ASICS trail shoe.
Well done Jung, you obviously know me well! 😉
The Asics review will be on the channel soon, thanks for the support it's appreciated 🙏
I'll confess to being a stickler for keeping my shoes clean, but my 'white' (aka dull grey) Endorphin Speeds are really testing my patience 😅
I know what you mean Nick! Not the best colour way for a British winter. Mine are the same dirty, grey colour and it's such a shame 😒
I don't think there's anyway back from it. The good news is the new colour way for the Speed's is Black! Thanks for watching 🙏
😂😂😂 thank god I continued to finish the video hahah
😂😂😂
I used to put my shoes in a washing machine then put them on the radiator to dry them… I must have ruined them that way
I was silently screaming inside as you tossed washer pods in the washer. Two pods and high heat would probably separate any glue on the shoe.
I put my shoes on my basement dehumidifier to dry mine after every run. My shoes never smell bad anymore.
Sorry Kevin but I couldn't resist it!
Yeap if you keep your shoes clean and dry they won't ever smell 👍
Well done for looking after your kit and thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment 🙏
@@Run4Adventure love your channel. It's worked for me through 90+ degrees days, 32c. At 30 plus miles a week. This time of year it's all snow and slush. But our spring will bring with it some wonderful day wet, muddy and hot days.

That's great to hear Kavin, so glad you are enjoying the Content 😊
Where abouts are you living?
@@Run4Adventure I live in Connecticut. U.S. We're not all nuts here, like the news likes to show.
Don't worry Kevin I don't believe a word the news says! 🙂
Damn, I thought you're serious about putting the shoes in the washing machine
Sorry about that 😂
Thanks for watching 🙏
I actually believe the washing machine part 😂
Sorry 😂
My hoka speed goat 5s have a second life. I thank you
No worries, glad the video helped 👍🙂
Didn’t work for me. Got Hoka shoes and the white has turned to brown. Hot/warm water did nothing.
Unfortunately it's impossible to keep white running shoes clean Bill, that's personally why I'd never buy them. The dirt get in the fibres and they just end up looking cruby 😔
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
I clean my running shoes by running through a creak. All done!
Nice one! Obviously it helps having a creak by your house 😊
Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
I was seconds from getting on here and telling you that washing detergent breaks down the glue in your shoes!!
That's great Daniel, got you! 😂

Hi Loyd! I’m a new runner and love your videos! Thanks for creating them, they’re super helpful and informative. I’ve just bought a pair of NB Rebel V2’s and loving them….all thanks to your recommendation in your top 3 l! I was just wondering what is the best way to get rid of shoe odour and also clean the white fabric parts of the shoe?
I’ll be using these every day pretty much and I’m expecting them to start smelling after a while 😂 Thanks!!
Thanks Daniel that's very kind 😊

I followed the instructions as they were delivered, and now both my shoes and my washing machine are dead.
Thanks a joke isn't it 👍😊
@@Run4Adventure Of course :) That being said, I've always put my shoes in the dishwasher, using a cold water cycle, with really good results. And to dry them, I leave them overnight in front of a fan.
