Oh my lord how selfish can people get throwing rubbish in the water, polluting it all for all the animals that live there, so disgusting!!!…. Come on Leicester clean up your waterways!!!!
Hi Emily & Ben: I googled about the dead fish and according to Chris Desai of UOCEAN, there were "1,000's of fish that suffocated because the oxygen levels have dropped by 7%. Fish can normally manage at 40%--which is still not great--but they had no chance here. The heat has evaporated the river, causing it to become very shallow. That left too many fish competing for too little oxygen. The heat caused the algae to bloom and when that happens, it sucks even more oxygen out of the water. Mr. Desai said by deploying an aeriation boat into the water could help future incidents." Poor little fishies! I'm glad that Ben was able to free the blue dress (?) from the boat prop so that you could restart your engine. Jenny
I read a news article about it also, so sad the hot weather, low water levels and algal bloom caused such deverstation.
plus a small area will heat much faster ...
That's awful, thank you for the information Jenny.
Sad but nice to know its.not pollution!😢
@@MrSaltyV- sad no-one, IE the canals and river trust were unable to do anything to prevent, monitor and pump water into the low level parts of the river/canal system. The canals and rivers are not equally managed or maintained. Some are disgusting and toxic from industry dumping polluting waste into them. We can only hope videos showing the problems galvanise local people and resources are found to clean them up.
What a perfectly lovely, brilliant channel.
Hi guys.
When on the farm a vet has a disposable glove that reaches to their shoulder. Maybe a good idea to purchase some of those for the disgusting tasks you need to do.
Nice one you 3
We're so glad we found your channel, you guys just present in such a relaxed and lovely way. Seeing those parts of the country that we'd never have otherwise seen is also lovely, even seeing the bad (and that bad was very bad indeed!). Enjoy your break and thanks for continuing with the vlogs and, of course, Benny's fantastic music - love it all! Jim & Fran
You gained my subscription with the phrase "we could just dry this off and wear it" 😅😅😅😂
There must be a technological solution whereby solar panels are used to drive motor driven aerators? Nice and environmentally friendly. Also, in Summer when the daylight hours are so much more, the units would work for well over 16 hours a day. Could also do with dredging to remove the suitcases and other detritus. Another great episode B&E, thanks.
I think granny and grand dad,s build is in that yard. They are UA-camrs!! You should look and learn! Their boat is very unique and very custom.
Beautiful photography and music at the end of the vlog.
I regularly walk my dog along the stretch between Birstall and Loughborough (I was at locks 46 & 47 today), so hearing your comments of how beautiful it is makes me realise I shouldn’t take it for granted 😊. I did report the dead fish to the EA at the time..
Hi 👋 Ben & Emily, the most down to earth genuine couple we let into our lounge via the TV . Love you both lots 🥰Trevor & Linda
Really enjoyed the beautiful instrumental accompaniment!!!
I would love to see a bread segment. Your recipe, your processes & procedures. I’d like to try my hand at some sourdough.
You folks are so gifted
Emily I like your hair. Enjoyed this video. Your Texas friend
Benny, what a star, even having cleared the weed hatch (been there, done that) in that gross canal water, you still come up joking and smiling!
Charisma, talent, style and such a lovely disposition to life, I am so pleased you two found each other, a perfect partnership!
Lovely vlog, as always, thanks for sharing.
Very familiar with Middlewich, but didn’t know it had a festival. Great thing to have.
That was a bad stretch of canal....sad to see....good that Benny's gig went well. Must be really hard work to plan your cruising to allow for where Benny plays, but you seem to manage it well!
No problems with fish at Saxilby Fossdyke Canal. It`s a bit faster flowing here. We do get algae but not seen it this year. Perhaps a solar panel next to the canal with an air pump every so often might help.
When there is high rainfall in a short period of time it can overwhelm the sewer system and you'll get massive amounts of sewage/industrial runoff dumped into rivers and canals via overflows. Pretty sure a few water authorities are getting it the neck for that atm. Near/in a city the size of Leicester you'd have to expect significant issues.
As I remember from when I worked in Leicester, there used to be some dyeworks around Frog Island (where you encountered a very stiff lock). This might have something to do with the state of the water just below it.
Where you have cold or cool weather, the heat builds with summer, so the rotting process speeds up. Which fills the water with gases from rotting vegitation from autumn leaves in the pond all winter. As the water volume lowers, so the gases intensify.
Need increased water flow to get fresh water flowing
The fish can't get oxygen cause of all the fumes.
I used to keep fish tanks years ago. Had to keep the gravel clean. Not over feed etc for that very reason.
That rain is just what the dead fish needed in stangnant waters.
Fresh oxigenated water.
Binge watching your videos on a Friday night ❤
Somebody should petition the canal and river trust, to clean that mess up.
Possibly not all down to them. If it's fly tipping from nearby properties the local authority should have enforcement powers. Even if those flats are private they'll be some leasehold arrangement to cover shared costs, so there'd be someone to take action against.
@@ethelmini Somebody should be able to get it done. As-is, is completely unacceptable, and really inexcusable.
OMG! That water looked putrid! 🤢 The poor wildlife 😢It’s always the innocent wildlife that ends up suffering for the actions of mindless ignorant people, littering and polluting the water. So frustrating and such a sad shame. Don’t think we’ll be hurrying in that direction! 🥴 Thanks! xx
Benny's singing is Amazing! Touches your soul. Sad about the fish/life in the canal . Beautiful cruise...love your sun glasses.. such spectacular scenery ❤️🙏
Leicester is 50% Indian/Pakistan,some areas pretty much 100%. Unfortunately they also brought their eco culture with them. Not racist,a observation leave the river and youll see the same onland. I live near the end of todays video and it is quite nice,my wife runs along the canal,we move onto a boat in about a year so am looking forward to see the rest of the journey.
Best report to that council who will report to the waterways to inspect but looks like it's people from those flats that need canal side windows sealed up! So bad in that area it has got to be shown up the canals had eels once too but they only live in clean canals.
Hello Ben Emily and Allan. We must have been just behind you as we were doing the Leicester Ring between 10 to 24 June. Experienced the fish issue too. Torrential rain. Flood light on red ! I suspected pollution. But maybe the detritus from the dying industry over the years was getting stirred up. Looked to us like a disgruntled partner threw their exs clothes in the canal. Would have been great to meet you and share a lock or two. Trevor & Julie.
Hilarious watching you cross the lock....
Like your lock gate shuffle I think I'm lucky I don't suffer from heights. Keith
I think the song you were thinking of at the beginning is 'We Built This City' by Starship.
The dead fish thing was all over the canals having watched other narrow boat channels.. even down London way. and it was the heat depleted the oxygen. in some places they were putting extra water in,, the CRT were and the Fire Brigade but was too little too late
So pleased you made it, what a nightmare.
Good article about the fish - New Scientist - "River Thames was pumped full of oxygen in 2022 to prevent fish deaths"
Oxygenating boats are treating the symptoms, not the cause - CRT/EA need to create more waterfalls to oxygenate naturally.
Not always glamorous on the cut but well done Benny for coming to the rescue in the weed hatch again!!👍🏻
Im glad ive found yr channel as the Grand union Canal is of great interest to me having explored some of it down south.
Great video, that part of Leicester btw the first lock and past space centre is notorious bad. It’s also a ‘river Ganges’ for cremations at the part you caught the prop. I always go dead slow thro there - sad to see the fish, I certainly think it’s pollution. Not been the first time. I’m moored at Pillings lock just before Loughborough. A great part of the river. Enjoy the trip guys
Another interesting vlog enjoyed bennys playing
Thank you 🤗
Hi Emily & Benny, We really appreciate you taking us with you on your canal trips. We agree with you about the foul waters near Leicester, absolutely disgusting, Benny you did look a little wary 😢after your performance. Stay safe our lovely friends ❤xx
Too right ! That's a disgrace that bit of canal
During the summer the most oxygenated water is near the surface and the water at the bottom is depleted of oxygen due to decomposition of leaves etc. after a big rain storm the two levels are mixed causing a net depletion of oxygen in the water. That is why so many fish die. I know this from personal experience, when I lost lots of fish in my pond a couple of years ago and researched it at the time. I love and look forward to seeing what you guys are up to each week 😊
So sad about the fish! That aweful section of canal in Leicester was emptied overnight by vandals when we came through. Took three hours to refill under CRT instruction and we only could do it this "quickly" without causing trouble behind us because it was being fed by the river!
Argh that bubbling section looked utterly grim, so sad seeing dead fish.
But yay at the perfect timing arriving at the lock, and making it to Loughborough in the heat ☺️
Hi you two ,I love your vids,so relaxing in the mornings. My family imagrated to Ont. Canada from England in 1963. We came from Manchester.I’ve never been back so watching these vids are very entertaining. Now retired more time to watch haha. Ben love your music , I play blues guitar with backtracking.music is good for the sole. Have you tried taking 2000 mil grams of vit C and 4000 iu s vit D . Everyday for your allergies. I’m 65 now and haven’t had hay fever since I was 30. Try it after a while takes time to build up but works . I haven’t had any meds of anything since my 30s. ❤️❤️you both . 🤗keep up good work. Stephen.
When the water gets very warm it’s very hard on the fish.
This was like a stealth video! I wasn't expecting anything until Saturday as per your usual time. I was completely surprised to find this one posted 4 days ago! I was really shocked to see that bad stretch of water. I would think the authorities would be looking into that, as it has to be a health hazard not only to the marine life, but to the people who live there as well. I've decided you guys are now my favorite channel. Yours is the one I look forward to the most each week. 😊
Nice one am not having all the finish dying is down to oxygen last summer was a hotter one with water levels dropping everywhere and there was not that many fish dying I put in down to pollution and after seeing that canal am more convinced the Leeds Liverpool canal got paluted and thousands of fish have died Benny you shud Wright a song about the rubbish tip in the canal .wow that was some rain have a top week big up Alan 🙂😾🥕🎸✌️
Its, here in Nor CA, Sunday 6 Aug, 2023. 104 degrees F. If it weren't for dinner plans. My wife & I would battle traffic to head to the beach. Not like Felixstowe, our favorite beach in England. Nor as entertaining as Great Yarmoth. I was stationed at RAF (USAFE) Mildenhall. Nonetheless very lovely beach's near us. Really enjoy your journeys video's
This was so nice to watch, the houses in an Amsterdam style are on the estate my grandparents lived on. I remember when they were building the rest of the estate, my granny would make the builders bacon sandwiches 😁 we’ve got a few of the architect’s drawings still, it’s a lovely place!
I enjoyed that so much. Poor Ben really looked miserable with hay fever and it was great to see him doing a gig as well. Cheers
It was definitely not nice seeing those dead fish and the river looking terrible it was upsetting to see it. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to watching them.Alan is so cute and adorable.Have a lovely week all three of you.😽😊😊
Leicester is my home town and we used to live just off Frog Island/Lock 42 and walk some of this route regularly. Unfortunately people treat the area terribly. As a brand new boater (not even collected the boat yet!) I'm actually not looking forward to this section despite having lived there for years previously.
Those lovely houses like in Amsterdam are in my home village, it’s so beautiful here. So glad you’re enjoying the river again now you’re out of the city xx
High temperatures will stress the fish, unfortunately resulting in their untimely end. shocking to see sections of the canal so heavily Polluted, one of mans bad traits. we so love your vlogs, Jenny&dave mon&brec canal.
IT'S POLLUTION!! That's why the fish are dying if you can report it to the water authorities whatever they are , and ideally the local council environmental health. Loving your posts anyway you interact with each other it's brilliant all the best from the New forest down south near Bournemouth
Good to see Benny performing - I'm sure it was great to get into the gig. Good timing that you moored up, and boom, it's raining
Really enjoy your videos. Your music reminds me of early Grateful Dead mixed with Neil Young
Wouldn't be at all surprised if the local water company was not helping the situation by discharging sewage. Hopefully the CRT dredge that spot and clear it up a bit.
Anyhoo, as always, love your videos.
Hope the blacking goes well.
You are both lovely 😍
You need to get some thick long sleeve gloves. I thought there was a speed limit on the canals and that boat looked to be going a bit too fast.
Hi Ben and Emily. Glad you managed to get through that broken lock so quickly and out of that polluted area of the canal. That rainstorm was amazing. Take care. Nick
i reackon poution in liesceter from such as dressing gown round prop to cooking oil thrown in the water
I have been spending the last few days binging all of your videos; I am glad to find your channel and can't wait to start cruising myself. You both have given me the courage to live on a NB alone!
Benny,
Stupid question,
How can I get hold of your music?
I am a 60 year old I prefer cds.
ATB to Emily and Alan.
This vlog is the best on You Tube.
Love Caroline and Douglas .❤️❤️❤️
Rough section for sure. Can't all be pastoral views I guess. Maybe your channel brought some light to the litter situation? The dead fish were likely caused by a CO2 inversion where the muck releases all it's decomposition gases at once? Certainly enough material decomposing to saturate that section. When it happens around here, we say a pond "turned over." Never heard of thunder causing it though.
Love the channel. It's my Sunday morning coffee binge.
Hi both
Hubby spotted your van when he went to investigate 2 packing our boat a few days ago. We’re back down on our boat from Wednesday -wk Monday if you’re still around. Can we buy you both a beer? Live music at Sawley marina next Sunday if you fancy an afternoon out . Jo and Marty
Wow, that’s been an epic journey. Mostly lovely but that patch after Leicester was revolting. I can’t believe they done clear the canal - surely it’s terrible for the local people as well as the environment and the wildlife in the canal. Hopefully now the weather has changed it will be better for the fish but if the decomposing mess us left in the water that won’t help.
Thank you for showing some if Benny’s gig. Lovely to hear - great vocal range too. Hope you’re having a lovely holiday now 😊
The black stuff you saw floating has oxygen in it from decomposition - we get this in Spring when leaves and other organic stuff floats to the water surface after Winter melt-off in the canal. Brave boat restart, and cruise through the garbage soup
That canal is like the Ganges minus the bathers.
Sadly many areas lost fish this year but that was the worst ever.
Ben’s singing is awesome! I love watching your channel and it’s heartbreaking to see the pollution in the water ways!😢
👍Love your slow-living videos, your melodious and hauntingly atmospheric, original music and the divine Alan. Thank you for sharing your peaceful way so beautifully and with such fascinating content.😘💙 Luv you guys.
we going to rock this city is that the song
Benny, your a Real Star, love the festival. So sad about the contaminated waters near Leicester and all the dead fish. Have they found the solution?
Bless your hearts. That was quite a sludge spot you went through!
Just look at the beauty you got to see afterwards!
As always I so enjoy and look forward to your weekly videos😊
What an experience boating through what appeared to be polluted water.
Well done for keeping carm.
The later river section appeared lovely
Thanks for the peek at the gig.
Depending on how far behind the videos are, you get a lot of dead fish just after spawning, especially bream, Tench, as well as some carp. But as was partly right with the weather, oxygen depletion, and high algee build up as well.
20:10 Yes. Warm water doesn't retain oxygen and often old plant material decay speeds up also fouling the water. Also, "run-off" from hot city streets pushes the water temperature higher.
In my part of the US, they require retention ponds on new construction to prevent that happening.
I hope this video gets someone's attention about their waterways being dirty. Those poor animals that live in it. 😢 I'm happy to see that outside the area it was beautiful.😊
So sad about the rubbish in the canal. Who is responsible for cleaning that mess up - the local authorities or the canal trust? How do they allow it to get so bad?
Brilliant vlog. Thank you for sharing. Please say “hi” to Alan for me.
The images and music are visual and ear candy all wrapped up in a delightful package! Thanks!
Wow how lovely . I was born in Syston and remember Harris's boatyard when I was a kid and The Waterside pub spent some time there. Then Barrow where I went to school. What a lot of happy times you brought back. Shame about the pollution , could it be nitrates washing off the fields? I was live aboard for about 10 years and look out for my old Narrow boat. Keep on guys...
i hope a report was sent in about that section of the river so sad to see!
Think the CRT should be notified, dredging needed
No plant left behind.
They call that stretch of the canal The Ganges.
Question: Is the canal system in England not designated as National Heritage Sites? I remember when I was young in England (I do not live there now), people throwing things in the canal and all sorts of items have been found and I am sad to say, bodies even. There is so much history to the canal system it is very sad. Love your channel.
You guys are great. We live in New Zealand (the country down under). I watch you every week and are a subscriber. You have a great channel with the right mix you guys and Allen keep the great work up.
Really enjoying this..I need to do it
Привет из России из Ростова на Дону ! Смотрю вас давно . Нравится!!! Здоровья и удачи вам ребята!!!!!!!!
It looked like there was everything but the kitchen sink in that canal. What a tip! I'm surprised you didn't find Lord Lucan in there!
Benny you should do a little more playing mate 😊
Thanks for the quick shot of Sileby Mill boatyard and the beautiful St Mary's church in the background. Loving this episode. Getting overtaken like that is pretty common. Must be that crazy 6mph speed limit on the Soar. Nice Pratchett themed boat. I used to have a pure white cat he was named Binky after Death's white horse. Sileby is pronounce Silebee sounds like pile or mile.
Emily, the condition of the water in and around will likely be pollution. Would suggest that you report it to the environmental authorities as suspected pollution.
Awww Ben and Emily how distressing on the poor fish and the bubbling water let alone the smell and the weed hatch but on you cruise and carry on smiling when you can hugs to you both and Alan luv u all tc now the oldies 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Well fun for getting to the stop point at the marria not gud going throw the suwer of lester
Get you music out there Benny! Your a talented musician! Xxx
Happy days ❗no longer locked up by the broken lock.
Excellent episode, very well documented, keep smiling
Try narrowboat on the river Shannon Ireland beautiful
Hi you guys, great vid ! Just noticed that you have had over 2K views in
less than 1 hour Awesome . You are fast becoming Narrow boat
ROYALTY. !!!! ❤
I’m not sure if you’ve talked about this before but is there anywhere you can report the contaminated water (dead fish / rubbish). So very sad to see 😢. We love all your videos xx
