    Interesting post on the TMC forum re the charging rates.
    "Model 3s will heat their battery pack for DC fast charging, even if the station isn’t particularly fast. This pack heating consumes 3.5 to 7 kW (depending on the vehicle) for the first 20-30 minutes of charging, leaving you with ~16-19 kW going into the battery (the display shows what’s going into the battery, not what the charger is providing"
    So if you've had a long drive to get there you may get higher rates, otherwise battery heating will impact you.. not sure if the same will apply to other vehicles.
    From notes on Plugshare they've realised the issue with cars with front (eg. Kona) or right (eg e-tron) and will look to instal longer cables.
    There is a photo of an e-tron working but basically parked in the spot behind.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks Mark, that’s interesting - so what I’m seeing on the screen is the net balance of what is entering the car. But what’s interesting is that both Keith and I drove a similar distance to that charger - maybe the later models with the heat pumps make them more efficient.
      - Yes they need a slightly longer cable for the front end chargers like the MG ZS EV

  • @PCLoadLetter
    @PCLoadLetter 3 роки тому +1

    I was incredibly disappointed with that charger this morning. But between its 16kW and the council’s 1 hour parking limit there, and the fault at Evie Mosman, I gave it 50 minutes but then switched to three phase at a council car park instead. 12kW isn’t that much slower, and fatigue management is important.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 роки тому +3

      I suppose if you have a 3 phase AC charger with better facilities or if you need more time for shopping or dining then that may be the way to go. This one in Mona Vale is really just for a very quick charge when you’re getting coffee or takeaway food. Nevertheless good to have more options 👍

    • @LudicrousFeed

      The ‘stealth’ part refers to our particular car which was a 2019 Performance that was sold without the upgrade package (brake callipers, spoiler, bigger wheels, sport pedals). Nowadays the Performance comes with all the bells and whistles

    • @boges11

    You've got 7kWh in 20 mins ? That's a charge rate of 21kW which is sort of expected on a 25kW nominal DC charger.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 роки тому +2

      True that’s not bad when you put it that way

    • @PCLoadLetter

      7kWh delivered by the charger or 7kWh added into the battery pack?

    • @moestrei
      @moestrei 3 роки тому +1

      @@PCLoadLetter Good question. Also: Measured by the charger at its input from the grid or output to the car? What ends up in the battery depends on the car, of course. If for example battery conditioning and cabin heating / cooling is running you have to subtract a few kW, but you cannot blame the charger.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 роки тому +1

      I’d say it’s 7kWh delivered from the charger rather than received by the car

    • @moestrei
      @moestrei 3 роки тому +1

      @@LudicrousFeed Received by the battery to be precise. The difference of delivered energy from the charger and received by the car is cable and connector losses which can be neglected at low power levels. You also have to remember that the car's BMS constantly sends charge rate requests to the DC charger and it could be a very cold or almost full battery limiting that charge rate. Scan My Tesla or the equivalent apps for other EV (Leaf Spy, for example) show you that BMS charge rate. On my high mileage Model S I had once 18kW BMS only at a fast charger on a very cold morning, it was a very long coffee stop 😃.

  • @racecrashrepeat
    @racecrashrepeat 3 роки тому +1

    Tom any idea why that charge was so different between your cars? age of batteries surely couldnt be the issue. It is new battery mangement on the updated M3 possibly with no tesla chargers? surely not.

      I'm still trying to work it out ... as Keith mentioned, he has a heat pump in his later model car. But then again, it wasn't too cold about 20 deg C and both of us had driven a similar distance to arrive at the charger. I will have to test another Jolt charger when I get a chance. Also, if anyone else has a 2019 Model 3 in the area and would like to test that charger, please let me know

    • @racecrashrepeat
      @racecrashrepeat 3 роки тому +1

      @@LudicrousFeed yeah seems weird. But even if it was a heat pump difference, there is no way that your car wouldn't charge faster than 14kw due to the heat management. That wouldn't make sense then with a supercharger or a NRMA charger. Something is off..I think it's the software on the chargers might not be reading something correctly. It would be good to see another 2019 model 3 to test if it's pre update models that it's affecting. Love the vids...also Tom do you actually have the 10k autopilot option?

    • @LudicrousFeed

      No I don’t think so. The vast majority of DC chargers are equipped with either both CCS2 AND ChaDeMo; or just CCS2 only. Either way your Tesla Model 3 should be fine. Even if you drive S/X, I would preferentially buy a CCS2 adaptor over a ChaDeMo

    Interesting to see 25 kW DC becoming more of a thing. Power supply wise it's not that different to 22 kW AC, with the difference that almost all EVs can make full use of that speed. DC is usually equated with "fast charging", whereas these I expect will be used more like a destination charger. Many cars only get max 7 kW via AC so the 20-25 kW via DC will definitely be welcomed. Even more so for owners of old Leafs which were max 3.6 kW AC. 20+ kW via Chademo is a hell of a lot better!

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 роки тому +1

      Agreed Charles, 25kW is still handy to have given Model 3 can only max 11kW AC and many other current generation EVs can only achieve 7kW AC. 25kW is still handy for a quick trip to the coffee shop or to get takeaway!
