  • In this video, Josie Mitchell, the Mitchell Center's 2021-22 Scholar in Residence, will lead you through ekphrastic writing exercises in response to exhibitions at the Blaffer Art Museum. While ekphrastic writing traditionally responds to artwork with poetry, this session encourages hybrid forms; feel free to respond to the artwork of Molly Zuckerman-Hartung in this video, to works in the Blaffer Art Museum's publication (link below) or to any art, nature or inspiration in your life. This workshop welcomes all writing and comfort levels. Please bring your own paper and pencil or device; documents, art details and other links noted in the video are listed below.
Josie Mitchell’s work centers on the Anthropocene, (post) apocalyptic genres and how such catastrophic disaster reveals something raw and powerful about the relationship between the landscape, people and communities. The undercurrent of Josie’s work is collaboration, and she believes through the lens of the Anthropocene, collaboration takes on a new dimension.
Convergence Research is a new, ongoing platform for interdisciplinary research, experimentation, improvisation and performance at the @Blaffer Art Museum. @University of Houston students and faculty from across the disciplines-and beyond the arts-meet to discuss and present projects in a state of becoming. All are welcome to attend, observe and join the conversation.
