Mashima is one of my heroes. As someone who is currently trying to get his web novel off the ground and worried as the years go by I'm hoping I still have as much fun writing my own story as Mashima when he's writing his own stories.
Tower of Heaven is also about freedom. Jellal is obsessed in creating a world where he has control and by virtue of that he spends 8 years of his life building the same tower he was doing as a slave (also to an objective that would never be realized because Zeref is alive). Both Jellal and Erza were in fact more free as literal slaves because they did what they thought was right with the limited power they had and after finally being free one becomes a slave to a lost cause and the other emotionally repressed and afraid to show weakness, always being conditioned by her past. Fairy Tail always treats freedom as a state of mind or an attitude (Rob that dies literally says it's found within the heart ), Natsu is not only pissed at Erza for trying to KHS but also for treating it as the only option and not a choice shes making because Natsu is the type of person that will always make the choice he thinks is right even if it seems impossible to concretize, and that's also why he ends up beating impossible odds. Side note- love how the tower of heaven final form is the most beautiful thing ever with an appropriate name while representing Jellal and the others years of slaving away for a pointless cause while also requiring human sacrifice. Also Natsu eating lightning was foreshadowed after he eats etherion when Happy mentions he tried to eat Laxus lightning in the past.
I absolutely loved the fairy tail anime. I found it at some point after graduating college. Watching it made me feel like a kid again, absolutely loving each episode and being excited about what would come next. Even with the multiple emotional moments (Hiro Mashima really loves to tug at the heart strings of the readers/watchers), it was such a fun/enjoyable watch for me :) UA-cam recommended this video to me, and listening to you both talk about the series has made me want to read the manga now. :)
One thing of note that I've noticed, particularly about Dragon Slayers getting dual element modes, is they only come from Lacrima carrying Dragon Slayers. Natsu: Get's Lightning from Laxus, a Second Gen DS. Gajeel: Get's Shadow from Rogue, a Third Gen DS. Future Rogue: Stole White from his Sting, a fellow Third Gen DS. Sting: Got Shadow from his Rogue, a fellow Third Gen DS. Natsu never tried to get Iron, or Wind. Despite how easily he could have if he just asked. So it stands to reason that the only reason they COULD, is it was possible as a result of the Lacrima. What this means is, for Wendy, if she was going to get a dual element mode, unless they just gave her Lightning, Shadow or White, which has already been done, the obvious next choice would be Poison, from Eric, a Second Gen DS. Hopefully this all makes sense.

Really good video, something else I like about FT is the Technicality of alot of the fights, there's unfortunately a misconception about FT power system, there are people who think it's just "my power level is greater, therefore I win." Yes it is true that Magic power does exist and it is intimidating but throughout all the fights in the series everyone is defeated through technicalities of different magic abilities. Hell Acnologia the most powerful character in the series they had to come up with a strategy to immobilize him and basically hit him while he's down.
I do love that the Acnologia plan was a combination of exploiting a weakness so well established it was Natsu’s introduction scene, and smacking him with super effective damage. I think in general unless manga are super in depth with why fights are strategic ie hxh or jjk, people just assume there’s nothing going on.

You’re half right. Nux has a short 5 year old video where he says that change would fix the series. However in an hour long 4 year old video he made he does make the argument Natsu is not the main character, the guild is the main character. He says it around 7 minutes 40 seconds. I find it regretful I even know this much about nux taku lore.
Great breakdown, people aren’t aware but if you look past the characters talking about friendship then a lot of the fights actually some logic behind the fight it’s just people dont really listen or pay attention most of the time
The only "Hot take" I might have in Fairy Tail is "Why didn't Jellal participate more on the Grand Magic Games". I get the whole Jellal might reveal himself, he is in danger, wanted man, but i really wanted him helping the Guild and as he said, his own form of repettance. It mada for a good gag against Jura, but i'd really like Jellal as copeting on the tournament. Thanks :)
because the gmg is supposes to be the fairy tail guild still showining that even after the times have changed and their is sinicisium / darkness in the air as implied and or shown by the best guild sabertooth sa a memeber sorano infornt of the whole guild and how the people who were in charge of magnolia after the main squad 7 year hiatus are also people who arent good people who dont trust in found family and the fact that in that 7 years eve zeref has started to increase activity the main beliefs of the fairy tail guild the priniciple it was found upon still applies in this world which wouldnt have made sense if they used jellal a non ft member to win the gmg .
As a musician myself.. i picked up three instruments within 1.5 half. Was naturally good onnall of em. My parents got guitar, bass,drums for my two bro. I played bass,then my mom was like"yeah we paid for a monthbof druns so wanna do that" i daid fuck yeah. Did it and loved it,then just said GUITAR NOW and its been my life every since. And so if i talk shoo qith others and they dont play anything but one thing. I just says",Why arent doing it all?" 😂 theybalways just looked complexed. To me its like eating.
this is a good video with talking about the good things about Fairy Tail and this might be too much but I wasn't a big fan of the Tartaros arc while there are some great things in it, I agree with how much the anime sort of drags it out and I was also binge watching too so I was sort of getting tired too. My personal favorite character is Lucy since I relate a little with wanting to find a place to belong and finding self worth
Erza vs erza was such A great foreshadow with the slice they both had on opposite sides and I had to double take because the anime had the cuts glow...and I was just taken back by it.....okay?@?×? Why then it hit me.. very cool

I tried getting into EZ, but I just do not like how Mashima writes. Part of it is probably that WMR and the WMR discord are certified Mashima haters, so their oppinion probably affects me a lot, but when my gut reaction to "should I catch up on EZ?" is "uuuuuuuuuuuugh..." it's a clear sign it's time to call it quits. I wanted to love it and I just can't. Makes me sad.
And thats why you dont ask anyone "should I watch this, is it worth"? Discover alone, without anyone showing up your throat their own opinions. And I dont like EZ too. It's not the writing its just that Im more for a fantasy than space - tech fiction.
Agreed. Most people you ask will probably have a different taste than you anyway, so their opinions will be mostly worthless for you. Just make up your own mind without asking others. You can still have a conversation on why you dis/like a story, but in order to do that, you will have to engage with it FIRST. In retrospective I'd say, that some people gave Fairy Tail way more sh*t than it actually deserved. It was an alright story. There were some really great and sometimes even subversive ideas in Mashima's writing, that I genuinely appreciate. That being said, however, the story still had some massive writing issues, too. If you seriously want to tell me, that there weren't a ton of really horrible ideas and bad conclusions in the the final arc of FT, you have to be legally blind! (s*x magic....lol; the exposition dump of Zeref at the end, explaining his "real" evil plan, which didn't even make a lick of a sense; August being Zeref's son; Makarov having his millionth fakeout death; generally nobody relevant dying in the end; Erza destroying a meteorite, despite all of her bones already having been broken; Irene just k*lling herself in the end, because she wasn't willing to destroy Erza, after ALL the things that happened in the fight against her....; etc.)

But every work deserves criticism, otherwise we'll just end up blindly "fanboying" after everything, while ignoring all the flaws. A work of fiction can have flaws and still be good. 1) Because it's a ridiculous idea. Do you really want to claim, that s*x magic a good idea? 2 + 3) Yes. (It's not like Mashima had already retconned Zeref's backstory 3 times at this point. "Might as well just connect some other time travel story elements, that never had any connection with him or anything he was doing until now with some dumb explanation, because the fanboys certainly will accept any explanation I pull out of my *ss anyway." - Hiro Mashima, probably) 4) It's an asspull, that was clearly just made up on the spot. It wasn't even hinted at and generally made no sense. 5) Fakeout deaths are often used in writing. There is nothing wrong with them on principle, but the issue arises from Mashima doing them too often. Too much of anything is never good. 6) It leaves people with the feeling, that all the supposedly HUGE stakes weren't really that huge after all. And there was no reason for Mashima to NOT sacrifice at least a few characters in the FINAL arc. It's not like he would have ruined any future arcs by doing this. 7) I don't care. It's what I read in the manga back then. It was a dumb scene by any measure, regardless! 8) Irene never showed ANY kind of sympathy or understanding. There wasn't even the slightest hint of her having some kind of soft spot for Erza. Mashima could have very easily fixed this problem. But this leads us to one of the biggest flaws in Mashima's writing: He always makes up some dumb solution for how the good guy character wins in the spur of the moment. He clearly never plans out beforehand, how a character wins a fight. It's always just some "magic of friendship" bs or something similar. In this case it was Irene SUDDENLY remembering, that she actually loves her daughter,......after having tried to kill her a thousand times. Yeeesss, that sure is some "believable" character writing. Sure~ (And again, I'm not a hater! I really liked what he did with Mavis or his reveal who E.N.D. was, for example. And I really like Edens Zero, too.)@@trashiki

Death also doesn’t equal good writing. Yeah he didn’t need to keep anyone alive but he also didn’t need to kill them. Mavis was the only ally who died in the war and she death was good. Therefore I liked the deaths in the arc. 7. Why is it bad though? Erza infused all her magic into her hand for a big burst and it worked, makes sense to me. 8. “I’m really not a Mashima hater.” I disagree strongly. Random example of Irene having complex feelings, her seeing how much the king loves his daughter and leaving instead of continuing to attack them. If you genuinely believe Mashima never plans anything out you’re just lacking in knowledge of the series.
Do you realise that the examples you gave of bad writing was only from the final season? This is exactly the problem with fairy tails critics the final season was very inconsistent ngl but this doesn't mean the entire show involves that 2 this just proves that fairy tail was very well written from the beginning and doesn't deserve the hate

I have the opposite criticism. I am pro fanservice and think the biggest flaw is that there aren’t enough sexy men.

6. I don’t agree, death doesn’t equal stakes. Death also doesn’t equal good writing. Yeah he didn’t need to keep anyone alive but he also didn’t need to kill them. Mavis was the only ally who died in the war and she death was good. Therefore I liked the deaths in the arc.
7. Why is it bad though? Erza infused all her magic into her hand for a big burst and it worked, makes sense to me.

If you genuinely believe Mashima never plans anything out you’re just lacking in knowledge of the series.
Do you realise that the examples you gave of bad writing was only from the final season? This is exactly the problem with fairy tails critics the final season was very inconsistent ngl but this doesn't mean the entire show involves that 2 this just proves that fairy tail was very well written from the beginning and doesn't deserve the hate
