"Turn to Stone" is a song by the Electric Light Orchestra.
The song is the opening track to the double album Out of the Blue. It was the first song released as a single from the LP. The single reached #18 in the U.K. charts and stayed there for 12 weeks. Out of four singles from from the album, "Turn to Stone" was the only song not to reach the top ten in the U.K. singles charts. The song was slightly more successful across the Atlantic, reaching #13 in the U.S.
The song was composed in Switzerland during Jeff Lynne's two week writing marathon for his double album. Lynne played the moog bassline of the song.
On November 4 2008, Jeff Lynne was awarded a BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc) Million-Air certificates for "Turn To Stone" for having one million airplays.
The song featured in the Doctor Who episode "Love & Monsters" (2006), along with "Mr. Blue Sky" and "Don't Bring Me Down", both of which were performed by characters in the episode.
The song is also featured in the movie Detroit Rock City.

Jeff Lynne, the ELO band members & the record company themselves don't even have access to it in this quality. And if you think this is good you should see and hear it in DVD standard!

*Note: If you are a Record Company employee or artist(s) themselves who object(s) to this commercially unavailable video footage being promoted on UA-cam (albeit in a lossy mono audio format) then please contact us to have it removed before flagging it. At the same time you may also like to explain to the fans why they cannot access this classic material in a decent quality digital format anywhere else?
You wont make a profit on something that cannot be purchased but enough exposure may well help sell what you actually do have for sale. Meanwhile to share ones talents is the greatest of gifts!
Please also be aware that all videos uploaded to UA-cam are format shifted by the host website from the original files. This can often cause picture & sound deterioration (i.e. mono audio) as well as the occasional video/audio synchronization issue. The files are also deliberately layered on our end with logos and artists links in order to prevent UA-cam recycling by lazy up-loaders, while at the same time helping to promote the artists themselves!

This is the tune that made me want to become a music producer... 30+ years later, I'm still doing it... Thanks Jeff Lynne!! and RIP Kelly Groucutt
heard this song on the radio, and 15 minutes later i was on my bike riding to the record store with three week's allowance in my pocket to buy the double album. and it was worth every penny.
I love how one of them is using a violin, that just gives another feeling to it, like classical music feeling, I like that man.
I am in love with Jeff Lynn. He is a genius beyond measure and I love, love, love him!!!!!
awesome song. Its the type of song you can listen to over and over again and it won't sound repetitive
@luvyellowroses1 pleased to meet you"again" lol
and I am with you, I love Kelly's voice. If only we could turn back the clock and talk
to these wonderful guys. Peace and Joy to you also.
Wow........brings back memories of a different time and place. 70s were awesome, thanks for sharing.
this groups music will NEVER DIE!!!!!!
We love you Kelly.... Rest in peace.
He is doing a thing folks like to call "enjoying himself." Also sometimes referred to as "having fun".
I love Britain so much, for it gives us these wonderful musicians
Thanks so much for posting this clip w/ good audio. Safe to say there has never been a cellist who rocks out that much since.
I ((♥)) the 70's :))
Respect to epic Artists like ELO for bringing magic music into the world to last lifetimes!
NOTHING is better ! THANKYOU !! :-)
i did luv these guy's... there live concerts were even better ( live sound had a raw edge) than the records.. i thought...seen them 15x live !
"Out of the Blue" from ELO was the FIRST record that I bought by myself when I was 14 years-old in 1978. Today, 34 years later, I STILL LOVE their music more than ever (by the way, the introduction of "Turn To Stone", in a crescendo, it's wonderful :-)
ELO ROCKS, love this song!!!
Excellent!! Maaan...does this bring back memories!
I still have this album today :)
64m >:-)
@sweetbrowneyedlady --yes I have heard this about his treatment of his band mates, My question is, how could anyone treat someone badly that HELPED make them famous?? Also how could he not appreciate sweet Kelly, he was an equal to Jeff when they performed. All the guys were amazing!!!!
hey what a find love this track , thanx
1 of the few times we see Jeff Lynne without his sunglasses. Billboard's #94 song of the '78 survey year. God bless you, sir, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
I remember one of the first times I heard this and I knew it was ELO because of Jeff Lynne's voice!!! I thought this was one of the most upbeat pieces that they had ever done until Xanadu came out!
They bring so much energy to their music--love it
Just heard. You will be missed in Hungary as well. "You took me higher and higher..."
la prima volta che l'ho sentita avevo 18 anni.......corsi a comprare il disco...mitici ELO
@sweetbrowneyedlady oh yeah!
great video !
nice
Kelly Groucutt is no longer with us ? I didn't know this ... this makes me very sad. :(
who are the two people that voted this down??c'mon man, this is great stuff. ya gotta love a white dude with a fro!!!
We had a lot of hair back then.......god we were cool!
Hugh McDowell the ''Chuck Berry'' of the Cello
I have heard it said that there is a fine line between a genius and an idiot.
Jeff Lynn in coming up with this concept and finding such a talented group of guys was pure genius. The way he dismissed the string players and treated people in the band like they were hired hands crossed that line....
I know, but he is impressive with that traveling cello lol :)
It's hard to find another band in the history of rock that was as innovative for their time as ELO. Think of the risk these guys took playing music like this in the 1970s. Not many artists have tried to cover their work because they simply can't,although I have to admit I would to see a more hard rock version of this attempted
Linda United!
I miss the days when radio actually played real music
jeff lynne without glasses!
@robertpmc Nothing--absolutely nothing!! Well, maybe a shot of Amaretto & comfy place to relax & enjoy ELO's masterpieces!!
great question, I heard it at a zellers and it was in my had for about year until i heard again in a mall bathroom, I started laughing my ass off because i couldnt recall the lyrics, then in the bathroom i rememberd turn to stone, went home typed it into google and my love for ELO had just begun, thought your cvs story was simlilar haha
@ZackMyslinski wow....
energi power ok
@antoniodimitriadis Sorry they are from England.But best band alltough...may be you talk about ELOY who's a german band?
@Thedanner1000 I know, right?
@antoniodimitriadis Sorry they are from England.But best band alltough...
@sweetbrowneyedlady
Ah. That explains where another British band with a string section and overbearing front man--- Dexys Midnight Runners--- got its model.
This version of the song sounds like it has less energy or is less upbeat than the original, though I still appreciate it. Does anyone know how old Jeff Lynne is? He must be few years over 60 right? How does he have hair identical to 70s hair he had? Voice is unchanged as well. Is this his clone?
Jeff was born: December 30, 1947.
@bushidobrother06 sooo yer sayin...whata sayin??
*their
What the fuck is going on with that cello player, seriously?
