  • It's time to split hives! In this episode we see John teaching his daughter Cora how to split her hive. She's done this before and is definitely no amateur, but for the sake of the folks at home John goes through step by step with Cora. If you've never split a hive, or if you've split a hundred in your lifetime, there's probably something to learn here. Tune in and let us know if you have any questions.
What are your methods for splitting hives? Got any good advice for a decent split? Leave your comment and don't forget to let us know where you're from!

Great vid, Coras hive is looking great. A little tip that might help Cora is take her hive tool and grind the hook down where it isnt so tall and so long where it goes between the frames. I tried it on one of my hive tools and its so much easier to get those frames pried up!

Cora ! You are almost tall as your Daddy.
I've had that same issue before. Boy.. the up and down weather really can mess things up with those queens laying.
It happens here in Georgia just about every Spring.
    Well done folks!😊

In this video, and in your previous series you leave the most promising frame with newly deposited uncapped larvae brood in the original brood box along with other brood frames and honey/pollen stores frames. The queen is moved to a new box along with capped brood, honey/nectar frames, and a sufficient number of bees for that new box to sustain itself. My question is could it be done the other way around with the most promising frame ("CBS in your splitting video series a couple of years ago) and the "support" frames be moved to the second box and the queen left in the original box with her own "support" frames? Is there some reason for not doing it this second way?

Pretty sure the queen has to have a new box to to create the idea that they swarmed. i noticed she stayed in the same location in the yard so her new hive would retain the field bees but i liked seeing it done this way. I love these videos, they are so thorough and straight forward. i've always seen the queen moved to new location with new box and donor hive stayed behind in same location so i appreciated seeing it done both ways.

Can I split a hive in july? I have a bottom deep that has brood and capped honey. I ha ve a upper deep that has 2 frames of brood the rest is capped honey, and I have a super on top. The bees are drawing it out but no honey yet and both deeps are packed with bees and this is a 2023 swarm

Newbie questions. If you had found a swarm cell, what would you have done? Also, why take off the queen cups? I believe you left a couple. Not sure. I'm getting ready to make my first split & trying to get all the info I can. Thank you

We would have left the cell in the hive for them to requiem with. I may have removed a few cups that I felt weren't going anywhere.
      Thanks for watching

I highly recommend starting off the video explaining what you're doing and the purpose for it. Unless your only target audience is the tiny beekeeper community, most of the people have no idea what you're doing. If you explain it, the regular folks who are watching your show purely for entertainment (versus as a beekeeping class) will know what's going on and will be more likely to subscribe.
@23:48 "There's a little bit of brood." Where? Show us 😉

We appreciate your critique, SJ, but we have plenty of videos that explain intricate details of what we're doing. Not every video on UA-cam has to be a tutorial. We video captured the education we're giving our daughter in this video. If you're looking for something more detailed for the viewer, check out our actual tutorial. Thanks for watching!
