Reminds me how Gary Payton said John Stockton was the hardest for him to guard. He was talking about stopping Stockton from creating offense for others and getting 13 assists. If DPOY The Glove and defensive point guard Isiah made it their responsibilities to stop the assists, then I'm more inclined to listen to their mentality than that of Gil who was a prototype James Harden. And I really thought Gil was making sense at first.
The true factor is whether the stats actually impact the outcome of the game, because some guys do just look to pad their stats but their stats don’t impact winning.
Now Gilbert contradict himself in this argument, he is praising lebron too much by dissing MJ, and yet he discredit lebron rebounds and assists impact already in this logic. Make up your mind Gil
Charles, Charels, Charels.......Man this dude got out played by a 40-year-old John Stockton, Steve Nash and a Injured Jason Kidd on several occasions. But said there is no one who could guard him from 1999 on down now who's trying to stay relevant. Because no one is talking about him for his basketball skills.
Steve Nash won 2 mvps while gil was playing j kid took his team to the finals twice while gil was playing as point guards they definitely dominated an controlled the game while making the teammates better and getting the most out of them
No, you were spot on Charles. It absolutely depends on the team, and the characteristics/role of the player. Holding a player like Rhondo on the Celtics to 8 points is different than holding Curry to 8 points on GS, because of how many points they usually score a game and the way the offense is ran. So with that being said, 8 points and 20 assists from Rhondo is a great night, 8 points and 20 assists for Curry is a bad night for Curry and he's just lucky his teammates bailed him out. Lol it just depends.
Old school ball locking someone up means taking that dude outta the game completely (like dude wasn’t even on the floor) and making him pass outta being put in shackles and can’t do ANYTHING!!!
If you notice the key words are, to him. He's not speaking from a team concept. Most of the time he doesn't. You did not shut a man down nor stop a man putting up 20 assists and 20 rebounds and 8 points.
If your man your guardian getting 20 assist and he is getting rebounds you didn’t shut him down, the man your guarding is impacting the game very much!!
Not if he’s known for scoring and you turn him into a passer💯he impacted the game in a different way but you stopped him from doing what he does to everybody else
There’s some nuance still. If you force a 14pt 10ast player to a 5pt 16ast player you have changed his play style and especially if doing so improves your team’s win perc then…it’s impactful.
As a defender, you're also supposed to cut off passes. Just last week, Gil said Dwight Howard was better than Patrick Ewing. The idiot just keeps on going.
The goal on defense is to stop the other team from scoring. Not 1 player. Most PGs were primarily looking to facilitate. If his team scores above the average points allowed by your team, then that PG beat you. Guys who think the objective is to just stop 1 guy from scoring are garbage on defense. The guy you're guarding isn't even trying to score. He's trying to win.
Steve Nash MVP years are the perfect example of what Jennings was talking about. Nash was so dominant with his passing that some tesms actually tried to force him to score more. I remember him having a 50+pt game and losing because he couldn’t get his teammates involved. The opposing team forced him to score 1on1 and it hurt the Suns offense. Magic, Zeke, Stockton, and Chris Paul are all similar in that way.
Even when a shooter has a bad night, they can still impact the game by doing other things like rebounds, assists, and defense. Sure, you want them to shoot but if it's not falling, you want them to find other ways to keep their team in the game.
Why is anyone surprised? Gilbert Arenas wasn't known for his defense when he played & all he cared about was scoring. That part of the problem with the league now.
Gil thinks NBA basketball is a one-on-one match up on this topic. Every decision made the game affects the total team effort. If you are just standing during active live ball movement, that is not defence.
The whole panel on the show acts like that often. It's like K-Mart saying last season that Kyrie is better than Doncic because he thinks he can beat him one on one. Just dumb.
In aau I’d run into guys you thought like Gil. What they didn’t understand is that while they were busy shooting their team out of the game, I was getting my teammates firing on all cylinders, I was out rebounding bigs, dropping dimes, and pitching in 12 pts. And that’s the reason they lost. Too worried about getting 20 pts, never putting real effort into any other area of the game.
The more Gil talks you see why he never one anything, nor lead his team to winning. Coaching 101 teaches players there’s more ways to contribute to your team n winning, than scoring. Every assist is 2 or 3 pts, offensive rebounds are in you as well, if it’s your man…. In closing, if you locking a guy down you stop the pass that leads to an assist. It’s called playing the passing lanes, or smothering a guy so he can’t make a pass to another player to score. Gil is only concerned with scoring because that’s all he could do, or worse he chose to do 😱
If I understood you correctly, Charles: - if you're guarding a John Stockton you lock him up by flattening his passing, his assists. In Stockton's case, that would mean him having lower than 7 assists in a game (versus his frequent 14-16 assists) - if you're guarding Reggie Miller you lock him up by preventing him from hitting above 20 pts (he averaged anywhere from 19.6 to 24.6 per season in almost 50% of his long career). Him having 4 or even 6 assists wouldn't mean much, he usually averaged below 4 - if you're guarding MJ and you got him to score below 20 pts (all seasons but his last he averaged above that) and he shot his assists above his typical 5.7-6.0, say 14 assists...then you definitely did not lock him up Agree with you. I see Kenyon's point but he is not considering the full picture like you have.
If the guy role is to run the show and set up teammates to score like a rondo kidd Nash stockton magic etc ur not shutting him down if u don't disrupt him making plays
This is why Stockton doesn't get the same respect as some of his contemporaries. Stockton's effectiveness was in managing the game and getting the specific scoring opportunities his team required. Assists (and steals) was his way of contributing to winning. If he had 12 assists and he was your main assignment, what did you do? Even if he only had 8 points, he still did his job despite whatever you're doing defensively. He better not have ripped you either, because that would be him doing what he does on the other end too. If he had 28 points and two assists, the Jazz probably lost because he had to take it upon himself to score. Either Karl didn't do his thing or one of the Jeffs was missing shots.
I see both sides because fans are gonna want to see individuals accomplishments, but in order to win games the individual has to get his team involved. At the end of the day it’s basketball
Nah i hate to say it but gil right on this one i cant do 💩 about assist my job is to make sure my man doesn't score and to disrupt their offense but if he throws the ball to another guy n he scores that has nothing to do with me
The big question is on those days that Gil scored 35 while holding J.Kidd ( the name he brought up) to 8, 12, & 12 whose team won , I’d bet more often then not Kidd’s …Gil is full of shit , because I’ve seen Magic dominate more when he was not scoring them when he had too …🖖🏾
This is the first, and I mean truly the first time I agree with Gil. If you're covering a player who normally averages 30/5/5, and he gives you 12 7/11, it means you did your job. You took away that guy's ability to score the ball... Once the ball leaves his hands, once he passes the ball, you've done your job.
Listen audience here’s a guy who played in the NBA and still doesn’t understand the concept of a overall great player and how they could change the game, even without scoring rebounding or assist, so many nuances to basketball that you could affect the game, but with his adolescent mindset And narcissistic views and only being a score himself he can’t see any other aspects of basketball unless (UN) Klutch sports. Send him a check and tell him to say different.!!
There's really no locking anybody up. Well at least ones that can actually play. Especially in today's game. Point guard is the deepest, most dominant position in the league now. None of them are locking the other up, which in most cases will ended be guarded by a bigger, athletic player which we all know will see a steady diet of pick n roll action. If you're gonna lock up your guy, your teammates are gonna have to be able to do the same. That's why the Celtics were so good last year.
Stats never tell the WHOLE story. Assists come in a variety of ways. The outlet, the lob, drawing the defense and then dishing it, the no look pass, beating your defender and then pass, etc. VISION is the main consistency to be able to get any assist. If I have it then you're not guarding me well enough to take it. It also means you're likely not stealing the ball and forcing turnovers. So you can't be shutting me down defensively.
Isiah Thomas once averaged over 20pts and 13 assist in a season, Kevin Johnson as once a 20-10 guy, Tim Hardaway was once a 20-10 guy, Earvin "Magic" Johnson was a 20-10 guy, Oscar Robertson was a 30-10 guy, Russell Westbrook was a 30-10 guy, James Harden was a 20-10 guy. And that's premiere company. And we all saw those guys dominate games posting those stats night after night with ease.
@@jameswarner300 naw people say it hell Paul pierce said he’s been real good at getting his numbers so did Chris Broussard. Jae crowder said back in the 2017-2018 season we were told to shoot the ball off lebron passes since he was trying to pad his stat numbers💯and the 2 years prior to last Lebron took the most shots on the team
I think the more accurate word for this scenario would be "contain". Sometimes an opposing team can game plan to "contain" the player if they cant stop that player. I think containing a player can look different depending on the players strengths. With that said, if you are guarding a player that averages 25 points and 3 assists per game; and when you played him he scored 8 points and 20 assists then you contained him.
Really? 25pts and 3asts amounts to atleast 31pts. 8pts and 20asts amounts for atleast 48pts. You need to go back to school. You probably flunked math class.
@@luisvergara6502 My assignment would be to keep the (25 and 3) player from scoring. The person who got the points from my assignment's assists would be someone else's assignment. No we are a team, but we have individual assignments. My job was to keep my assignment from scoring.
It’s funny when Gil goes into those moments a lot of the time he’s talking about Lebron 😂in one way or another. Example 2015 finals iggy gets mvp for guarding Lebron but doesn’t get any credit because of Lebron stats, but on the other end he didint stop iggy & iggy had a major impact on that series leading them to a win.
i go wit zek and jennings .. and like you said its a diffrence between j kidd and westbrook kidd looks to play the point and assist. westbrook wants to score and pretty much do it all
Basketball is a team game and if I help my team score by passing the ball to someone who scores off my pass then that is just as good as me scoring. Gil is ignoring the fact that it’s not someone generating their own shot but they are playing off the pass that came to them
Somehow, I could CARE LESS about Gilbert Arenas opinion on DEFENSE which he played little to none of in his career. Dude literally was the definition of a CHUCKER...a good one...but a CHUCKER nonetheless. Miss me with your opinions on D Gil'
It all depends what way u are getting the assists and if they are indeed real assists. Magic Johnson for example it wasn’t that he was averaging over 12 assists he did it In such a way that it kept his offence flowing and affective. Guys today lot of them get assists by spamming drive and kicks and really do nothing to get their offence into a groove.
Gil know how assist happen? Either a blow-by or a pick, you are doing something that either pulls a defender away from their assignments or shifts the defense. If you are “shutting your man down” you are limiting those opportunities. He acts like everyone main priority is to score and passing is a “stop” but no, setting up others is a part of basketball
I think it also depends on if you were guarding that pg that got 20 assists that whole game because he may only be dominant with 100s of screens, and without screens he can't do ish a la Lebron. To beat that, you just play man and keep the players he's assisting to at bay. But if you not guarding him the whole game how is it on you? It's on the coach more than that player. I think Rip Hamilton described it best when referring to Lebron. He uses picks to get his game going. Definitely not a bad thing, im just saying.
He doesn’t think before he speaks. Only in his world where he thinks he’s locked the down the opposing point guard where he scores 10 points but he has 10+ assists
Just to prove Gilbert wrong the consensus has generally been the best way to beat the Nuggets is to make Jokic a scorer and limit his assists. That right there proves Gilbert is wrong.
Gil is just saying things that would create online engagement for their show. The more outraged people are, the more curiosity it generates for others and that would entice casuals to check their show out.
You're not getting 20 assist off passing the ball to guys coming off curls. You get them by beating the man that's in front of you and causing his teammate to help which leaves a guy open. Gil gets beat then blames his teammate fir helping him out. This is why he never made the ECF
You definitely have defensive responsibility to guard a playmaker/facilitator as much as a scorer. It seems Gil never had a shred of defensive awareness.

This is the difference in mentality for the best player on a team with no expectations vs the best player on a championship caliber team
20 assist for Jokic is 40 points any given night.
I would love to see the winning percentage of a player who gets 20 assists in a basketball game. I bet it’s at least 80%
A guy who never played defense blaming everyone around him for getting torched for assists and rebounds totally checks out.
20 assists impacts a game tremendously GILBERT
I’m trying to understand who actually cares or lends any credibility to what Gil says? I mean the only common denominator is he played in the NBA. And, what? That’s supposed to put a stamp on his takes and opinions? 🤔
IF A PLAYER IS DOING WHAT HE WANTS TO DO WHILE YOU’RE GUARDING THEM THEN HE WAS COOKING YOU PERIOD….ITS JUST THAT SIMPLE.
Exactly.
Facts
Reminds me how Gary Payton said John Stockton was the hardest for him to guard. He was talking about stopping Stockton from creating offense for others and getting 13 assists. If DPOY The Glove and defensive point guard Isiah made it their responsibilities to stop the assists, then I'm more inclined to listen to their mentality than that of Gil who was a prototype James Harden. And I really thought Gil was making sense at first.
Gil is a straight blacktop player. He has no team basketball iq
@@joeymanny 😂😂😂
If Gil is guarding someone who has 15 assists gil is playing bad defense. You need to make it hard on the person to make passes like that.
”You’re just collecting a bunch of stats to make it look like you played very well” ~Gilbert
You mean like the way Burger King stat pads? 😂
That part💯👏🏿👏🏿
The only way you can say you locked a player up in a game is if he becomes ineffective in that game.
Gil just love to hear himself talk😂😂
@@Dipset415 that is true and good point!
If You Don’t Stop His Impact In Any Form Or Fashion Then You Not Shutting That Player Down At All
There’s some nuance still.
When Gil said that, I immediately stopped listening.... lol... Ewing is one of the best centers to play the game
@@brianpunter8471 Dwight was so limited offensively that it was sad.
You honestly gotta fast forward when Gil starts speaking. Best way to watch Gil’s Arena. 😂😂
Gil just likes to make people think he’s the smartest guy in the room
In Gil’s mind, he had the game of Michael Jordan and Kobe, but his mindset wasn’t there.
Gil did not have a game of kobe bryant or Michael Jordan 😂😂😂😂
He did score 60 on Kobe lol he was definitely an elite scorer in his hay day js
😂😂😂😂 you don’t know ball bro go back to anime cartoons
@@lewisalba7825and Kobe had 45
When Gil said you are collecting stats to make it look like you played well is lebrons whole career lol
Why is anyone surprised? Gilbert Arenas wasn't known for his defense when he played & all he cared about was scoring. That part of the problem with the league now.
I always called him Gilbert Heresy-nas for a reason 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@HOST‼️AWESOME ANALYSIS 👏🏿💯
Gil is only concerned with scoring because that’s all he could do, or worse he chose to do 😱
If I understood you correctly, Charles:
- if you're guarding a John Stockton you lock him up by flattening his passing, his assists. In Stockton's case, that would mean him having lower than 7 assists in a game (versus his frequent 14-16 assists)
- if you're guarding Reggie Miller you lock him up by preventing him from hitting above 20 pts (he averaged anywhere from 19.6 to 24.6 per season in almost 50% of his long career). Him having 4 or even 6 assists wouldn't mean much, he usually averaged below 4
- if you're guarding MJ and you got him to score below 20 pts (all seasons but his last he averaged above that) and he shot his assists above his typical 5.7-6.0, say 14 assists...then you definitely did not lock him up
Agree with you. I see Kenyon's point but he is not considering the full picture like you have.
If the guy role is to run the show and set up teammates to score like a rondo kidd Nash stockton magic etc ur not shutting him down if u don't disrupt him making plays
Man I really don’t understand how Gilbert thinks . Why doesn’t he get more real ex NBA players on his platform .
Gil's career is full of empty stats. That's why he can relate to Lebron.
Nah i hate to say it but gil right on this one i cant do 💩 about assist my job is to make sure my man doesn't score and to disrupt their offense but if he throws the ball to another guy n he scores that has nothing to do with me
It’s damn near the equivalent of a qtr back slicing the defense up
The big question is on those days that Gil scored 35 while holding J.Kidd ( the name he brought up) to 8, 12, & 12 whose team won , I’d bet more often then not Kidd’s …Gil is full of shit , because I’ve seen Magic dominate more when he was not scoring them when he had too …🖖🏾
This is the first, and I mean truly the first time I agree with Gil.
I just watched film on Stockton dropping 27pts on Gil 😂🔥🔥🔥
Mr Thomas sounds normal when not talking about Jordan.
exceedingly kind of you to refer to Gil as an NBA legend 😅
He's talking about Isiah Thomas as the NBA legend.
Gil must be the statistician for Angel Reese.
Russ and harden 🙅🏿♂️stat padding losers💯✊🏿
@@Dipset415 I agree, but LeBron James has been stat padding since going to the Lakers and I don't hear anyone saying anything about that.
What am I supposed to do run over to the guy who he passes to and guard him too? I have an assignment. Im not saying that to go to the media and say, "my teammate is the reason..." No we are a team, but we have individual assignments. My job was to keep my assignment from scoring.
@@Rlambjr21 No, your assignment is to keep your man from doing his game. He averaged 3 assist and you let him get 20 assists on you, you did nothing.
Gil is ignoring the fact that it’s not someone generating their own shot but they are playing off the pass that came to them
Some assists are bullshit. Also, how do you give a guy full credit for the points scored from an assist when he did not make the shot.
Can’t say you’re not entertained
It's really sad how you can be an NBA superstar, and not understand the sport at all....
Gil only values scoring because that's all he brought to the table.
Agent Zero respect 🤣😂
Gil is just saying things that would create online engagement for their show. The more outraged people are, the more curiosity it generates for others and that would entice casuals to check their show out.
You're not getting 20 assist off passing the ball to guys coming off curls. You get them by beating the man that's in front of you and causing his teammate to help which leaves a guy open. Gil gets beat then blames his teammate fir helping him out. This is why he never made the ECF
You definitely have defensive responsibility to guard a playmaker/facilitator as much as a scorer. It seems Gil never had a shred of defensive awareness.
You ain’t locked up nobody that did what was necessary to get his/her team a win.
I completely shocked Arenas doesn't understand what winning basketball is. 😅😅😅😅
