Yes. That's the difference between kerala , tamilnadu and rest of India. Muhammed is only the last prophet as per islam..Infact islam came or found to be known from the time of prophet adam who is the first prophet of islam .. Conceptually islam as its core ideology IS there at different places at different times just because of the fact that Islam beleives every human is born muslim (or masoom). ISLAM as a relegion is completed only at the time of prophet as islam beleives prophet muhammed is the last messenger and islam as a relegion is completed by the prophet which was a task or a stone laid by each prophet at each time period..In that concept (by relegion), It is unlikely that islam existed here at that time..
In conclusion
1. Islam exist everywhere where humans born..
2.Islamic relegious concept at its core exist from the time of prophet adam.
3.Islam as a completed relegion exist from the time of prophet muhammed.
4.Shortly we can say that "spiritual islam was there from time imemmorial and a completed relegious islam was from the time of prophet muhammed.
The statement "ISLAM was here from this time " is only complete when one understand "what is islam and how it started"...

What you said is a belief not a historical fact. Islam as an organized religion came into being 1400 years ago, as far as I know there is no factual evidence to say that Islam existed before that even in Saudi Arabia let alone other places. Since Manu is a historian, I think he is talking based on facts and not beliefs.

If someone in our neighbourhood claims that he is michael jackson reborn, his followers (faith) would say that he is michael jackson. But a Historian must stop with "there is this guy who claims he is Michael jackson reborn". Historian cannot say that michael jackson was reborn. Thats the difference.
@Ejas Ahammed "who submits to the will of god" refers to a specific god as mentioned in quran with a specific name. Even though people say it is hiranya garbhan, and it all sounds nice,... Try saying shahadah with hiranya garbhan in place of gods name (or the word for god, which ever way you interpret it). The existing mainstream will not accept and that means all that argument doesnt mean anything practically in today's world. Even jehova or yahwe wont be acceptable. That aside, it is also mentioned in scrpture that "not a single community has gone by without a messenger from god". Also mentions elsewhere that "entire humanity is a single family". So conceptually its not really semetic brotherhood, but universal brotherhood from that perspective.
