I must be a late bloomer. You have heard the song The Eye Of The Tiger? Well I have to have the mindset of the Orks. The win is in the scrap itself. I have fun. I may lose, yet I go out swinging.
It is good to make sure you keep in mind it is a game. Have fun.
Movement really does win games. Being able to get your secondaries, and primaries. Knowing your army is critical. Knowing your enemy is critical. Threat assessment.
Army lists, and deployment wins, or losses games. Sometimes a great unit gets wiped right away, You might dismiss it, but it is still a great unit
Show up with the coolest models you have, infantry, tanks, arty, etc. Play like each mission is part of some storyline, be prepared to suffer 80-90% casualties, whilst watching your lasguns do nothing to most targets. Be patient as your tanks degrade and get worse at shooting, and your blobs get shredded by pretty much anything.
Little by little, just as Mordian said, you'll start to understandwhat works and what doesn’t, how to prep each unit for the next turn, know who you can and can't sacrifice at the start of the game. Eventually, you will start pulling out wins, and that feels badass.
Unit ability integrations on one target are key for me ... Darring recon from scout sentinel. Fields of fire from Creed with a motor -1 AP ... Exterminator autocannon.. -1 AP... Those 3 combined on one target... Cheep tanks with heavy bolters .. Lethal hits/sustained hit .. AP -3 ... Stubbers 6 shots AP -2 ... Adds up much more than people think..
Got my first 5 turn GT this september. Actually my first tournament ever.
Going to set a few goals: 3 of the games I have to score minimum 50 points, have fun, learn new people, learn to play against new armies etc.
I picked up the DEATHWATCH in 8th EDITION! Loved the Modells and the Army.
Returned now to 10th Edtiion. Had a Steep learning Curve in Bolt Action and I think It will be Similar here.
I played vs Sisters, NEcrons...and of course I don'T really know what the Enemy Armies Do.
I barely know my own.
But Time, Reps and Sets will Strengthen THAT!

Mordian you are the harbinger of hope. I now feel motivated to paint my second dorn, my 40 other guardsmen my second Russ. I am prepared to be once again defeated by my friend that plays custodes just to one day stick it to him with a clean victory because we are THE EMPEROR'S TRUE FINEST.
I have a notebook that I want to sit down with and do a literal after-action report after each game - what was the matchup, what worked, what didn't, and thoughts on how I can adjust.
I've been writing this stuff right on the score sheet. It is the raw, right in the moment sense of whatever happened. Last one was: don't plan on getting investigate signals with a Basilisk...dumb plan...
I found for my first few games I screwed up placement... My scout sentinel was not in a spot where it was not within 18 inches of the daring recon target... Solar wasn't next to the correct order target... etc ..
Just had my first RTT today and went 0-3 ;_; but it was all fun and plenty of learning moments!
Before watching the video, I'm guessing the advice is going to be "start with at least 100 infantry men"
So you know I’m just getting into the Guard myself but I saw someone on another platform saying they were down because they had lost their first 8 games. Basically gave this advice, keep playing, keep learning those wins will come.
played my first game with death korp recently and won. didn't have shit for a strat, just bum rushed the objectives and dug in with 20 man death krieg blobs with marshal and psyker. let mortors and a basilisk chew up his guys. taking out those 20man blobs is hard
What helps alot is just asking your opponents, what did you do wrong or what did you do that made things difficult for them.

As a new guard player building up my army, I've been worried about not doing so well in my first games. But thanks to you I feel more confident for my first battle. While I may not win, at least I'll keep what you said in mind and learn from it.

On this point, what happened to the faction review videos? I imagine doing one for each faction is excessive/time consuming, but what about grouping a handful into a common strategy and then a couple tips for each faction. Really helped me with world eaters.
I know for a fact that being a new player I'm not going to get all the wins. In reality, I just want to have fun with my friends. I cannot wait to play.

I have to say, I was wondering what angle this video was to take, ad a "beginner"; if it was goingvto be knowing how to not get too deep into an expensive hobby, just to turn play it, and not like that aspect, how to start learning to actually paint something that is both important enough want to look good, but that multiple works don't ruin the detail, whether to learn the arts of magnetization, to keep from having to buy ANOTHER of the same thing, but with a different load out, or risking dipping into the third party market, where you might nor know what you are getting, or can use, but that doesn't invalidate the point of this video, and as someone who used to play, and never won a game against my friends who introduced me to the hobby, it's a good thing to learn.
We are an army of attrition. We lose 20 infantry no problem, we have 60 more plus tanks. The enemy loses 20 fire warriors, plague marines, space marines, etc., suddenly they've lost a significant portion of their army while we only lost 120 points.
Mordian has a brain the size of a planet
the suggestion to think back about the game after the game is not optimal, because people are naturally inclined to making excuses for themselves, if they throw a unit in the open and gets erased they will not rationalize it as "i throw my unit in the open" they will rationalize it as "my opponent army is too strong because it can wipe a whole unit in one shot".
The proper way to do it is to design turn by turn what you plan to do in the game. Even better if you can your opponent to share army lists the day before the game, and you can write down on paper your plan. Where to put units, and how you plan to counter enemy units, and how to score more points than your opponent.
Then if you get rekt and you read again your plan either you have not executed the plan as written when it could have and thus you learn to not jump the gun, or the plan was derailed by something you have not considered and that the next time you will, or the plan miscalculated the results of carrying it out, so you will improve it.
This is the best way to turn self excusing thinking into scientific thinking, by turning a game in a experiment about what you can think you can do in game and what you actually do in game.
My first game with guard is in half an hour, perfect timing! Thanks for the tips

Ive been playing for about a year now, AoS and 40k. I loose like 98% of my games 😂 i still have fun playing the game. But it does kinda suck loosing all the time. Maybe im just retarded, idk

Guard is a thinking persons army , we don't have OP characters to save the day . We {Guard} are mere mortals defending humanities "right" to live ...
Guard is not a 1 trick pony , we have many ways to play : Artillery spam , Infantry spam , Mechanized , Balanced & Tank spam ,
............but never forget your basic infantry platoon is the lynch pin of your Army ..............
Games Work shop hates us . We may have the most model selection , but they will Nerf hammer us into the ground without hesitation , unlike the 5 Nerf "love tap" tries they take with Space Elves or Tau . We get slammed with 1 big one , like latest update . { Artillery spam to Tank spam }

We are always fighting up hill battle / the good fight . When you win your 1st battle , 1st RTs & 1st GT you will know it was you & not a game gimmick of OP models or the rules to get it
