I remember I only developed this issue right after a dentist told me to open my mouth wider, much wider than I was comfortable with. I felt a click and developed this jaw disorder ever since. It's too late for me to go back and do anything about it now but please tell your kids about this if they go to the dentist. Don't let the dentist pressure them into opening wider than they are comfortable with.
As for those with the disorder, I've found that caffeine, specifically from coffee will agitate your jaw and make your pain worse. Avoid gum and jerky as well. Force yourself to avoid clicking it on purpose at all costs.

@@fernandoa589 well, I don't really want to disclose my age. But enough time has passed that I believe some sort of statute of limitations exists. That and I don't have the resources or knowledge to press charges against my dentist for malpractice. And even if I did, I would have to somehow prove that the dentist knew making me open my mouth wider would cause tmj, which I doubt would stand in court. All I can do is leave this comment and warn others about ignorant dentists that may inadvertently cause tmj in children they are treating.

@@fernandoa589 I suppose I would sue them. Maybe they didn't know what the outcome would be of forcing me to stretch my jaw open wider than I was comfortable with, but I don't think that really excuses the pain they caused me. But it's too late for me now. Hopefully others can better defend themselves and their children.

The dentist telling you to open your mouth wider did not cause your problem. You already had the problem and you not being able to open all the way is an indicator.

There is no definite treatment for this syndrome. But you can try the methods below that my doctor advised to help maintain a better condition and alleviate symptoms.
    1. relieve stress. when you are under stress, you unconsciously clench your teeth and it will worsen the symptoms.
    2. avoid biting food with your front teeth. It looks ridiculous but I use fork and knife even when I have a burger and pizza.
    3. avoid chewing gum and solid food like beef jerky
    4. wear warm and cover your jaw and the around in cold temperature.
    5. jaw stretching. slowly open your mouth as wide as possible (but not to the point of pain), leave it for 10 seconds and slowly close it again. One set of 3 reps in the morning, day and night is recommended.
    6. warm wet towel massage on the jaw
    7. see a medical specialist asap!

I watched a video in this m. So ur disc which has no pain nerves basically migrates completely to the other side of the pivot of ur jaw leaving ur jaw pivoting on the tendon (which is connected to ur displaced disc) which has nerves. Good news is the tendon,Over time gets damaged and scars over then hardens loses the nerves and practically forms a new disc which is just as adept as the old one which has shifted out of place. There’s a sciencey name for it I can’t recall

If anterior displaced disc disorder is not treated early, in 6-9years it degenerates to the point where permanent damage is done to the condyle/fossa ,connective ligaments, cartilidge and disc. Unfortunately, it seems like maxillo facial surgeons have done very little research on how to cure this disease and patients are left on their own to deal with oral facial pain.
The public need to put pressure on governments to fund research on this debilitating disease.

    • @annbrodzinski5707
      @annbrodzinski5707 3 роки тому +1

Occlusional splints are controversial on relieving TMD symptoms or correcting TMJ. For instance how how can you fix a bite with splints if the teeth dont fit without adjustments to the teeth, I'd still need braces regarless.
My question is, how do you figure there isnt a way to cure? Maybe not all, but alot of patients do get help. I would imagine real braces instead of invisalign would be beneficial im many cases.

When I was younger I discovered I could pop one side of my jaw up and down out of place. Didn't hurt and it grossed people out. So I did it a lot lol well that made my muscle in there swell and cause problems for a long time. My jaw would typically lock first thing in the morning and I could not open it. I'd have to massage that spot and coax that tendon back into place to be able to open my jaw. And most times it would go right back into a lock if I shut my jaw again. Had to wear a split in my mouth to prevent a full closure for months to let the tendon heal and go back to normal. This seems exactly like what I have, and I’ve been dealing with this for over a year. I’ve gone to orthodontist and chiropractors for this, but only went to a special jaw surgeon did I find out that this is because of the disc that rotates the jaw “folded over on itself”, which is now why it’s locking. I have little idea of what this is outside of this info, can anyone tell me anything else is should know, and is what I said correct?

it also widely depends on your teeth bites, if you don't have a normal bite and you have a over or under bite you're more prone to getting tmjs, those who have normal bites arent. i have an over bite and i have tmj.

Now it locks once a month out of nowhere. I'll just wake up with it locked. I found putting a round pillow between my lower jaw and neck and then trying to open my mouth unlocks it.
