Phobe Cates is half Filipino like me and why I idolized her. She represented well and intelligent and gorgeous. She got out of the business when she married and had kids with Kevin Klein ,ran her own boutique,an accomplished business woman in Nycity..she made the transition to accomplished mature woman. Acting was just one of many. Shes still one of my tavorites from the 80s..
Most people don't know, she's half asian, her mom Lily Cates is asian, Filipino-Chinese. She was very popluar in Asia than the u.s. in the 80s and early 90s, she still looks cute.
"LIfe's the same you're moving in stereo." Weird, why did that song suddenly pop into my head? And I can't get rid of it. No idea where it came from, or why.
Phoebe is without a doubt one of the prettiest women to grace the screen,Fast Time At Ridgemont High is a classic with lot of young stars to be Sean Penn,Forrest Whitaker,Jennifer Jason Leigh,Judge Reinhold,Robert Romanus and Ray Walston, she’s aged beautifully but, she’s not acting anymore.
At first I thought she was kind of dumb but I think she was just really young (just past 21st b-day). Plus, she'd been in several recent films without benefit of wardrobe ... and Dave was still young and ... Dave has (had?) a rep as being mean to guests, but it was usually deserved and he clearly didn't think Ms Cates deserved anything but being nice.
I think the problem is that back then almost all the Hollywood critics bashed it. Most gave it only 1 star. About 20 years later, the critics starting praising it, but when it came out most of them refused to acknowledge it as worthy of an honest review.
Fun fact: Originally considered for the role that Jennifer J Leigh played in "Fast Times" was Meg Tilly (The Big Chill, Agnes Of God, Psycho 2) They decide not to go with her b/c Tilly & Cates looked more like twin sisters than friends. Both looked similar, their faces, the black hair & half Asian)
I think she is probably highly intelligent. She spoke well, was measured in her responses, and you can tell she’s messing with Dave at times. Very cool chick, IMO.
Goes to show how Dave grew in his ability to "interview" MUCH better as the years went by... this one was a bit of a mess, not just focusing on the nude scene, that's ok, but the "flipping through the magazine" was... interesting :)
Truly strange. He's lost. Even after they got the nude scenes out of the way he never recovered. Too bad. Those are some fun movies and roles to talk about.
It's because she was not being a good conversationalist, providing single-sentence responses to his questions. He is clearly joking about this at the end of the interview when he asks her what she is doing next, and she tells him, but doesn't explain what the project is about.
For a video that's nearly 40 years old, this looks fantastic. Actually feel bad for Phoebe in this interview. Dave kept grilling her on Paradise, and you can clearly see how uncomfortable she is. As for Fast Times, it's aged like fine wine. Truly one of the best films from the 80's.
All of this stuff appears off the cuff and spontaneous, but it isn't. Dave was the master of making the audience believe he was winging it, but all that was rehearsed beforehand.
@@jbm0866 How did you all get so paranoid? And why would you even care? You have these theories that Dave is secretly setting up questions to make guests uncomfortable without people realizing it. There must be bigger questions to ponder that would be more worthy of your time.
I highly doubt it was any kind of grilling. Paradise was not a well known film, it wouldn't be surprising that he wouldn't know anything about it. Many of us ended up seeing it on premium cable after she became big from the other movies. We'd never heard of it before.

she wasn't much of a guest she should have wore something sexier for sure
Looking at older clips i noticed Dave got better at interviewing guest as he got older, especially after he became a father.

Dave had Phoebe on 5 or 6 more times after this and he hit on her every time it was like a running theme.
It was an awkward interview on both sides. Interviews have never been one of Dave's strengths and Phoebe was so young and not super talkative.
If you like Phoebe Cates, be sure to catch her in "Princess Caraboo." Not only is it an amazing movie, but even based on a true story. Also co-starring with her superb actor husband, Kevin Kline.
Now and then Hollywood generously shocked and surprised on the sensual side ... the top 3 gifts that come to mind ...
-Phoebe Cates in Fast Times
-Jamie Lee Curtis in Trading Places
-Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct
The late Kelly Preston In Mischief & Mimi Rogers - Full Body Massage.
Jamie Lee Curtis had a nice shape but she didn't even have a human head.
Phoebe, the 80’s fantasy dream girl
She is absolutely adorable
I was secretly married to her at one time... Oh, wait that was a dream.
I estimate that she's had literally millions of 'husbands'. I count myself in that mass of humanity. But, it turns out that Kevin Kline is the only one who can really make that claim. Lucky bastard.
Love Fast Time's, still watch it on my DVD.
Absolutely STUNNING! Had a huge crush on her in 82 when Fast Times came out!
I loved everything about Pheobe Cates on Fast Times in Ridgemont High lol
Memorable scene particularly because she looks so innocent!
Not half, she only have 5% Filipino blood
Phoebe Cates is a Eurasian. European Asian. Her mom is Chinese.
To a Chinese - Filipino Heritage. Her dad American Europe descent. 😊
Every time I hear "Moving in Stereo" by The Cars.....there is Linda Barrett.
Time to rub one out to Phoebe in a bikini
Most people don't know, she's half asian, her mom Lily Cates is asian, Filipino-Chinese. She was very popluar in Asia than the u.s. in the 80s and early 90s, she still looks cute.
I miss the old days of Letterman. Later years....not so much.
Phoebe Cates was the It girls of the early 80's.
"LIfe's the same you're moving in stereo." Weird, why did that song suddenly pop into my head? And I can't get rid of it. No idea where it came from, or why.
Did you rub one out?
And I loved everything about her in fast times!
She's underselling Fast Times. It's a classic!
Would Meg Tilly have gotten naked? I forget if she did, but JJL showed a lil in Fast times.
yeah both half chinese
Loved Meg Tilly, but I think Jennifer was much better for this role. Meg probably would have been fine though.
Phoebe had 2 of the best parts in Fast Times.
too bad those parts weren't that big
@@chrissac8584 They were perfect.
@@chrissac8584 This dude!!🤕
she was 17 lol
@@sorayah9702 So was I when I lost my virginity.
I think she is probably highly intelligent. She spoke well, was measured in her responses, and you can tell she’s messing with Dave at times. Very cool chick, IMO.
My nephews and nieces ask me what was the 80s like and I say just watch fast times at ridgemont high!
She's absolutely beautiful.
Yeah, Dave was always great at comedy, but it definitely took time for him to become a strong interviewer.
The most beautiful girl ever.
1 of billions.
Right up there, but don't forget Paulina Porizkova.
1984 Phoebe Cates is an all time favorite.
Possibly the cutest woman ever to live
Phoebe will always be gorgeous.
Yeah. Dave is more or less a p(erv)
@@stickman1742That’s BS. Paradise was a little known film that ripped off Blue Lagoon. Dave knew damn well, or he was asking about thanks to one of the producers at NBC.
