I would kinda like to do that. My husband has always been addicted to tv. We have both deleted our fb accounts but he scrolls a lot still on his phone and I watch too much UA-cam. It’s habits. I can attest to that. Many years ago I bought a small vacation cottage. And although my main house was not much bigger, as I got older I found just regular maintenance and cleaning was becoming a time-consuming burden - and at 70 - I found there literally was no free time. I thought to sell both and down-size. Long story short, I had no takers for the vacation cabin and had no choice but to sell the main house and move into the cabin. It is the best decision I ever made. I never realized that the layout - although probably not to many people's liking, actually made it so I had a ton of useful space but only have to clean two rooms. I know it sounds not possible and it would take too long to explain - but sometimes your house becomes a burden because of just the way you are forced to use it.

Today I decluttered 20-30 items I thought I needed. My car has been paid off for years. My house is relatively small (1,500 square feet). No TV here. I'm training to be a realtor. I'm looking forward to becoming more independent. Last year we did a staycation. We toured many local places and learned more about our area. Cleaning my house and decluttering is how I get my exercise. Jewelry? My wedding band and engagement rings are what I wear. We are renovating our house into a lovely home to come home to. It was in bad shape. Thank you for the advice that we've been following for years.

I don't see the point of a big house if you have to work 7 days a week to pay the mortgage and bills. You'd never enjoy the place. Similar for a fancy car, working 7 days a week to cover expenses.
I buy simple clothes and wear them a lot.
We have television, but I also read a lot.
      Now retired, do voluntary work.
Prefer days out, plenty on our doorstep.
      Don't bother with 7,8 or 9.
My home is fine as it is. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Can't be doing with the mess and upheaval.
You're right, this is wisdom for everyone. Agree with you 100%.

At first we whined about it but when our luggage did come we were saddened as it added stress and anxiety to our trip as we looked at how much stuff we packed. We were happier with the few clothes we had and the few toiletries. We were happier with less and almost wished we'd never gotten our luggage as it turned into a hassle after that.

So true. I am almost 63 years old and have been a big supporter of 9 of these choices for the last 40+ years. I have a TV vice when the time permits. When our kids were growing up my husband and I decided that time with them was way more important than fancy houses, cars and jobs. They were and are our first priority. Them you only get one chance at. Careers you could always try later. We live on 45 acres in the country in a reasonable size house with reasonable cars. We are not foodie or clothing people and love to camp for vacations. This gave us time to concentrate on our kids. Our kids have turned out great so we must have done something right. It is ok not to follow society's luxuries. Most of it is just stuff in the end that you will need to find a home for. Declutter some ones house after they pass and you may understand this. After all do your kids really want the stuff. Ask them. You may be surprised by there answer's.

Very good list. I especially liked the mention of a high paying but unrewarding job. I used to be a computer programmer. It payed a lot but I felt like an unimportant cog in a machine. When the job market dropped out of that sector I attempted to pursue a carrier in music. I have not yet succeeded, but I’m happier failing at that than succeeding at a job I don’t care about. Even the part-time blue collar jobs I do now as day jobs are more rewarding.
Regarding the extravagant vacations though, I do miss visits to Hawaii. Those trips actually were more relaxing than any vacation I could take in my home state. Still, it’s better not having an unrewarding job even if I can’t afford Hawaii any more.

I agree with you on everything except #4 the television. I get enjoyment from watching movies and series', for me it doesn't take away from other aspects of my life, so I do not feel like it's a time waster. However I don't waste money on endless streaming or cable services or over price tickets to movie theaters, I'll rotate a streaming service every month for simple convince of watching newer content, but over the years have built a physical media library and good equipment to have the best visual and audio experience in my small home. I'm a visual person so I don't get much out of reading books, but watching a movie with friends can still lead to great conversations afterward or even just having fun side splitting laughs together. This is just my opinion and everyone is different, I feel if you have children then a TV is not a great thing to have, I don't so it's ok. haha

The luxury gym membership is a difficult one for me. I had access to a $10 a month (or less) gym for decades and would be consistent for a few months and drop off. Over and over again. I also bought my own gym equipment thinking it would help me be more consistent. It did for a while. But boredom set in for all the above.
I joined CrossFit at the beginning of this year and pay a steep $180 a month. But I am having the time of my life. I am part of an awesome community of super fit men and women. I love walking into the gym having no idea what we are going to do exercise-wise. Working out in a group environment is incredibly motivating.
Sure, I wish I could pay less money per month for classes. But in three decades of experimenting nothing else comes close to "expensive" group fitness classes for me.

The challenge is when pursuing something in line with your passions and values A) requires more schooling, which is costly, and B) doesn't make a decent wage. I'm in grad school to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology after 20 years working in an office job I hated. I LOVE what I'm doing, but I'm old enough that I'm going to be paying back school loans for eons and might never have enough to feel remotely comfortable in retirement (if I get to retire), and it's not the highest earning job. Thank you so muvh Joshua for influencing me to remain "not influenced" by the way the society expects us to be.
We were very money rich due to ancestral propwrty but we kept working a lot to lead so called "great happenjng life" focus on home, jewellery vacation posting on social media etc..
Now we quit all 10 which you said
We are retired with property. We are never so satisfied in entire life even though we had more income before.
We feel we have enough even more now we even donate to monks beggars every month.
Many a times less is indeed way more.
All the merit of good things o share with you because you helped me a lot in becoming who i am today.

My exhusband waz a dentist. He changed from engineering in his 40's. I quit my dental assisting job to stay home and raise and homeschool our 6 children. People would come in amd say , they thought there would ne more toys in our home. They would tell you they had plenty of toys. We had tons of books and music cassettres and cd's. They played outside on 11 acres, climbing trees, building forts. We never went on a fancy vacation or had very expensive toys. I taught our children to help others , I did not want them to grow up to be spoiled dentist's kids. I taught them to shop for bargains and how to cook, clean and care for the home. My 2 dauggters homeschool their children and work very hard. My younger daughter raises animals does canning and even hunts. They are wise with their money and have turned out to be hard workers

I wear three stud earrings. Each are different birthstones of my kids birth month. Haven’t changed type of earring for almost a decade. I’ve been slowly decluttering jewelry realizing I’m probably never going to wear most of it. Why slowly, you ask? Because I’m weirdly emotionally attached to it. So silly!

Got a 15 yr old Honda that only gets 11 mpg, but newer ones cost as much as my house… & the mpg is the only thing I don’t love about it. It’s all banged up, but it’s so comfortable, rides & drives like a dream, & never worry about it getting scraped & dented.

Dear Joshua, I truly love your content since years, BUT: Have you ever considered, that quite a lot of it is adressed to already worthy people? People, who already have a house and so don't need to get a bigger one, or people, who already have a car and don't need to buy a fancier one, or people who have good electronical devices and don't need to buy newer ones, etc. I think that even in the US, where- like you said people yearly spend thousands of Dollars for unneccesary items - there might be many people who don't have all that. There might be people like me here in Germany, who live in small flats and are happy to be able to pay the rent for them, or maybe have a really old or no car, because they can't afford one, or have an old used smartphone, given from a relative years ago, etc. etc. No offense, just my thoughts and maybe I'm wrong. But as I said, love your content anyways👍 Greetings from Germany 😊

Maybe what he is talking about is the "American Dream" where people habitually spend above their means in order to maintain a certain "standard of living". Excess and consumerism are rampant in America, possibly more than what you are used to in Germany. I do not think he talks to those of us who already live within our means, or struggle financially.
