In this DIY tutorial, I share how to shade creations with chalk pastels, that I make/craft/sculpt out of polymer clay 💕 This is a fun beginners guide that will make your charms look super realistic with polymer clay shading tips, tricks and techniques, what tools I use and more!
PS. Sorry for my voice being a bit low/flat in this video, I've had a never ending cold!
Tools used:
- Polymer clay: tan tones, vanilla or white
- Chalk pastels: light yellow, dark yellow/ochre, reddish brown (Spotlight pastels: shorturl.at/mDIQS)
- Craft knife/blade
- Small container with lid
- Toothbrush
- Paintbrush
- Oven

Love this tutorial! I saw those pastels in Spotlight and wondered if they were any good to use for clay. I've just gone and bought them!

You’re welcome! No, I don’t do either of those because adding water to certain brands of clay can turn them mushy. The raw clay has enough ‘stick’ to it, to make the pastel powder adhere without the need for anything else. I hope that helps! 💕
Just rewatching this again, can I use any old paint brush for this or do you suggest I need to buy high quality? I have some lesser quality brushes lying around from when I tried painting that I no longer use..
Yes! I find that the older/cheaper/more worn, the better it is for shading with chalk pastels. ☺️💕
If you eyeshadow do you need to seal it after baking it? Thanks

You don’t have to, but if your item/charm is going to be handled a lot, or if you’re worried it’ll get dirty, then I would absolutely seal - same goes for chalk pastels on polymer clay. You could try the eyeshadow on a test piece of clay, bake it and see how it goes, unsealed with your intended amount of use, then seal a proper piece, if necessary. 💕☺️
Can we leave unfinished pastel dusted polymer clay for multiple days as we work? Would it get brittle once baked if we leave the clay out for days and then make it or will it still be fine?
I’ve found that you can! I often do that, I’m even working on a mini pastry crust in a bottle cap at the moment and I’ve left it dusted for a few days already. I checked yesterday and it’s still pliable and soft. I usually bake as normal and it’s never brittle. ☺️💕

Hello! I've found that oil pastels also work but probably not AS good as the soft pastels. (I dont have soft pastels lol) i just scrape of some of the oil pastels and apply it. though you have to use ALOT and it doesn't stick to the clay after baking! Edit: Oh and for the oil pastels you cant really make custom colors because when you try to mix it its always seperated from the other colors. So instead I layer them with the yellow, then dark yellow and the the brown.
Hi! Oh, that's good to know! I've tried them previously and it was really messy compared to the soft/chalk, they also just kind of smeared everywhere and didn't look smooth, super chunky. 😂 I'll have to try to experiment with it, again, some time. Have you tried mixing the oil pastels with liquid clay for an icing/frosting type texture? That's something I haven't done - curious to know how/if that mixes together! If you can, give the soft ones a try, they're veeeery different - really easy to blend and you don't have to use a lot! 💕
@@Cloudfetti thank you so much! Yes I’ve found that oil pastels can get chunky and- isn’t very smooth. I haven’t tried the oil pastel + liquid clay yet. I’ve heard about it and will let you know. I’ve also found that bake and bond is almost the same as liquid clay!
I think it could work, since polymer clay has oils in it and can mix with Bake and Bond/TLS to make a paste-like consistency. Worth a try!

Hello! Its me again! (remember me?) So I was just wondering whether the soft pastels are waterproof? I mean like do they stick to the polymer clay when it has water on it? Oof this is kinda hard to explain- ill put it this way. lets say I make a keychain out of clay and it has soft pastels on it, and it starts raining. Will the soft pastels wash away? Because i've heard a lot of people say that applying uv resin as glaze on it will protect the soft pastels. Im asking this question to you because in the end of your polymer clay tuts I dont see you have uv resin on it or something like that. Edit: nvm im so stupid lol i checked ut ur other polymer clay tuts and u do add uv resin to your creations, but do you think if i dont apply it will it still not rub off even when its raining?
Heyhey! I remember you, nice new username! I just tested it for you and ran the pancake and waffle from this video under water and used my finger to try to rub it off. The chalk pastel stayed on and nothing happened! If you’d like, you could add some water based satin polyurethane glaze (from the hardware or art store) to add an extra layer of protection but keep the same look of the chalk pastel, instead of the shine of UV resin, if you’re still worried about it. ☺️💕
Can I use this dry pastel colours in air dryclay
Yes, you can! You just need a lot more of the shaved powder to colour it and get a deep shade, I’ve found ☺️💕
Can you use any chalk colours like some kids chalk sets? Thanks
No, since regular chalk doesn’t contain any pigment and it’s not artist grade. Soft/chalk pastels are super vibrant, and they’re made of a different material. 💕
