alexander magill Begin Again has the same director as Once but I think that Once has this raw feeling that is closer to the heart maybe because of the actors and the songs, Begin Again is a little pop-ish, but overall it's an ok movie

This is a very great film about two souls brought together by music. It doesnt have to be over-the-top drama , action, super effects, etc all the time. This is simple, pure and real. I love it. The songs are really wonderful and one can feel that Glen Hansard really poured his heart into this.
As close to perfect as a movie gets. Not a false note throughout, the songs blend so seamlessly into the narrative that it doesn’t ever feel contrived. Not over-produced, just the right length, fantastic acting, and every song has impact. Can’t wait to watch it again.
I read that the line the girl says at 2:03 is "no, I love you" and that when they filmed the scene the guy didn't actually know what she said so his reaction to the line in the film was his actual reaction to the line. I can't guarantee that for sure though as I don't speak Czech.

Like many lovers of film, I evaluate films in many different ways. 2 of my favorite films are "Treasure of Sierra Madre" & "On The Waterfront". But, to me they are so psychologically disturbing that I can only watch them once every 4 or 5 years. Once, however, is a film I watch at least once a year. In that sense, it is one of my favorite films. It will probably never be in the AFI 100. But, if it were up to me, it would be. Indie, low budget or not, it was so well constructed that it can be favorably compared to so many great films. You care about the characters The story feels real & believable (even like a documentary at times). Drama, romance & just enough humor to balance things out. Visuals that are totally appropriate to the story. A great soundtrack that also contributes to the story. What more could you want from a movie ? I would like to write another 10 paragraphs, but I suspect that the readers would like to go onto their next review. Thanks if you listened to this point. - Ted

what i love about this movie is its genuine description of friendship, love, and music in in our lives. there's no need to bring in famous actors or complex plot in the movie :)
This music touches the soul. I have just watched the musical in Melbourne and am still slightly spaced out. I will watch the movie because of the music. Magical. If it doesn't touch your soul maybe it is time to do some inner connection yourself :)
My little sister played Ivanka when my dad’s theater put on this show a little while back. Guy and Rezá (she’s not in the film) were staying at our house. Because of all this it made me feel like I was in the show, walking the streets of Dublin with my instruments and non existent friends wanting to be heard. I know almost all of the songs by heart too. It’s a story about artist and friendship. A week long love story of two artist with much different backgrounds. Absolutely pure art on the screen and the stage.
Its a beautiful film. Great story. fantastic music. heart felt. Inspiring. And I think everyone can probably relate in some sense to it. Definately must see.

Brilliant music that just fits every second, beautiful pictures and charismatic characters as well as actors, and, to me, shows that the right person sometimes doesn't have to be the person you spend your whole lifetime with, but accidentally helps you out to fix your life, instead of changing it. Watched it with a girlfriend last week and it somehow helped us to be even more sincere and open with each other. One day I'll show it to my kids...

I loved Once as a movie and I'm a Dubliner who grew up a few yards from where some of the scenes were filmed. Broke my hart first time I saw it because I was in London and knew very little of all the hype just went in to see a movie.
A truly beautiful film with a wonderful score. I was fortunate enough to see the West End production of the musical, and the performers did an amazing job of capturing the emotions and delicacy of the original and still doing something new with it. Love, love, love this story.
I don't know what to say about this film, I was just plain floored when I watched it. The story, the music, it was just a high for me. The first time I watched it, I just remember staring at Glens character while singing "Say it to me now" on the street, in total awe-struck, incapacitated. I went and bought the soundtrack immediately and am going to buy the movie soon, instead of keeping it from it's rightful owner :) Highly recommended!! :)
I honestly can't understand how someone CAN NOT like this film. If you're a music lover YOU WILL love this film, and if you like movies in general this is a move for you.

I remember hearing about this movie, while listening to NPR music at work. I loved the song. When I watched the movie, I was like Damn, that's the guy from The Commitments. 😄 (Glen Hansard) My husband, has no clue about what I was talking about. I have to get it and show him. I watched that movie a ridiculous amount of times as a teenager. I did enjoy this movie Once.👍
watched in on TV recently. It was really like a formerly hidden gem for me. The story was nothing too new, but it was portrayed in such an authentic way through the characters and especially the music, you had no choice but to be touched by this film!

wonderful charming film, you really want the two leads to get it together but somehow its best that they both go back to their partners to try again. The music carries the movie on beautifully.
