Thank you for the review. I always get the feeling that what we get from Devin is personal and what is in his head at the time. From quirky and heavy to atmospheric.
Very, informed review. You’d be a solid neighbor (minus that sweater). Edited to offer this: Try to remember that yes, we’re allowed to critique music on its face value (as a release), but after all he has accomplished (and endured), the music is personal to him. The songs mean something. And I think when you dig into THAT aspect of the art, there’s a lot more there than a dozen pop-structured songs.
Despite not really being a fan of his music, I usually check out his new output just to see what he's come up with. I can see how he's maybe settled a bit into something familiar but... I still feel like there's varying surprising twists.
Definitely looking forward to giving this a listen the first chance I get. I've been listening to Hevy Devy for nearly 10 years now and every new release from him gets me excited even now.
Let me disagree with you in one fundamental thing: Powernerd songs are quite different, funny Powernerd, Knuckledragger and Ruby Quaker are just pieces between slow and heavy Falling apart (with huge Terria vibes), Ubelia, Glacier and Goodbye. And these slow tracks have their messages about love, troubles, problems and mixing all this stuff. Devin himself told that this album was written during one of the hardest period of his life, so... I expected Addicted, and received Addicted+Terria+Accelerated Evolution, something like that. Anyway, great review, thanks, but all the credits go to the mighty "one and only" Mr Devin Townsend! He's genius and we all know that
Came here to say exactly that. I’m baffled to hear that “once you hear the first song there’s nothing new after that” I just think that’s blatantly untrue. In fact the first song is the only song that sounds like that on the record LOL
I'm a lifelong dev fan and felt the same way about Lightwork, and really wasn't into the Puzzle. Was a bit nervous I wouldn't like this either but now I'm looking forward to checking it out.
Devin is a little too weird for me, but I'll give it a try. I discovered Ki during Progust and I love it, so I at least know he can make fantastic stuff.
Sounds like a pass for me. His catchy arena rock stuff is my least favorite side of his, and he's been my favorite artist since City. To follow up as predictable an album as Lightwork with another predictable album is really souring me on any new music lately from him. I'll wait for The Moth and Axlotl and hope he can recapture his best qualities. He did it with Empath, so I'm sure he can make it there again, but lately it's been so meh.
There's definitely a lot of big, multilayered arena choruses and a general feeling that the songs are pretty simple. They don't have that much going on. Still, I found enough highlights to make a 5 track playlist out of the album.

He is always unpredictable.
As a fan since City came out, he has never been more predictable than he is right now.
@@alphaenemyplus8376 have not listened to the new one

Love the sweater!
I would describe his career as the one Frank Zappa actually handed the torch to

I am going to love it when I buy it upon waking up on release day.
All I really want from a Devin album is something that rips. I am not hard to please when it comes to his music.
strong dissagree addicted is a thousand times better than this

Oh man. With about 30 releases, there is no doubt you won’t be awestruck with at least half of them.

It's not true, the whole 'write the same song 11 times' is nonsense, every track on this has great individual character.
Dev has been releasing duds.
The arena rock is uninspiring the most milquetoast garbage. Just gets tiresome after a while.
@@Roddrummer oh, sorry, I didn't know that was the opinion I was supposed to have, thanks.

@@Nall412 If you actually decide to pay attention to the lyrics you might notice it's pretty far from a "dud"
