I really love the last two thirds of the song. The beginning is really frantic and I don't love the rap. If Nemo can comfortably sing this live, Switzerland is going to do very well!
I need to learn to not undererstimate Switzerland. After Luca Hänni I thought, well that was our best shot to win at all, we can‘t top that. Then Gjon‘s Tears hit twice with a masterpiece. It can‘t get better right? Nemo: „Welcome to the show“
I'm surprised u didn't catch the "somewhere between 0's and 1's" line despite u doing so many great analysis videos.... that i think is the easiest thing to decipher especially when we know that nemo is nb.....
This is probably the second entry where I've been super eager to hear it live (the first was Veronika). The falsetto has been compressed and layered to give it some volume in the studio version, but their technique still shows through it and there's a lot of clever tricks going on "the co-woah-oh" instead of "the code" when singing in non-spoken word parts. First verse is really just a very nasal spoken word with some tremolo thrown in and some texture, but the falsetto staccato is sampled straight from the queen of the night aria from the magic flute opera, though slightly faster, and I need to hear them doing that live lol. The long melisma near the end of the song isn't as challenging as it seems but the difficulty with falsetto is knowing how to resonate it to give it volume and power without it sounding harsh to the ears, so that's the real challenge for them in that regard. I caught in the video at around 2:12 a single note in their falsetto which hadn't been layered and compressed, which was much quieter than the rest of the track and a notable difference to their head voice (which sounds similar to loic nottet when it's not nasal), but because of their technique elsewhere and all the technical tricks they did in the song I'm very eager to hear them in a live setting. If they can replicate the studio to a live performance then this is a serious contender to win overall, and I think will be guaranteed a top 3 spot with juries. They do tend to spend a lot of time in that nasal area, and personally I think they sound much better down in the pharyngeal area, but to each their own. The vocals aside, the other thing I'm really impressed with is the composition itself; it's quite the genre-clash but it still has a good progressive flow and nothing feels unnatural musically. It's quite artistic and contemporary, and in that regard reminds me a lot of Veronika (also quite artistic and contemporary).
Were you satisfied with the live singing? :) I can see you're a vocal expert and I appreciated your detailed explanation. To my un-expert ear the live performance sounded brilliant, despite them catching their breath due to the physical workout they did on that platform 😂
The video reminds me of scenes from Snowpiercer by Bong Joon-ho, it has everything but Tilda Swinton onboard ! I love it, its by far my preferred entry ATM ...
Loved this very early analysis, and your open positive personality 😊 you were also on point, we need to sell that kidney to go to Switzerland next year 😂😂😂 Nemo's song, music, lyrics and performer's authenticity was by far the most complex and enjoyable in this year's contest. I loved Mustii a bit more tbh but after Belgium didn't qualify, I ciuld focus on Nemo and I am soooooo happy they won. Absolutely deserved it. 🎉❤
Barbra Pravi serving us train in 2021, followed by Zdob şi Zdub & Advahov Brothers in 2022. 2023 was the year off and now Nemo is serving us train again!! I love it!
Isn't this kinda Jann's Gladiator in more upbeat? They both have a rap part, a crazy vocal in the end and also the start that you already mentioned (possibly more I haven't done an analysis or anything). Which I find great, I really loved gladiator and if it gets to be redeemed by my home country ...
This song is absolute quality, I am not sure how much I actually like it or if I want to listen to it regularly, but I do appreciate the originality and effort that went into both the song and the video.
my only worry is that people won't get it on first listen. It's a FANTASTIC song and in my top 3... now, but I'm embarrassed by how low I put it after my very first listen 😅
You broke down the song so well, but! The bit about the 0s and 1s (and the mention of 'the code' in general) is not about the internet, it's very on-the-nose imagery, they're non-binary, using the *binary code* to express that!
The song and the music video are insane. I also didn’t have any problems with the mix of music genres - to me, the transitions felt very creative but natural. I do hope that the atmosphere of the music video can somehow be transferred to the Eurovision stage. The thing is, that Sacha Jean-Baptiste, who regularly does the staging for Switzerland, normally ignores the music videos completely, which can be a good thing (Boys don’t cry) or also a bad thing (tout l’univers). So as you said, adding another person to do the staging, might be a good idea.
It has "circus atmosphere" harmonies. His vocals are insane. I hope that he will manage to transfer it to the live performance. 2:45 .. JamiroQuai style.
Uuuuhhh... now THIS is interesting 😮 Rap and opera is a new one for me. Reminds me a little of Hollywood Undead and Palaye Royale in some of the rap parts. Weirdly enticing song and a combination that shouldn't work so well 😮❤
Absolutely loving it. Combining so many genres can be super tricky, I was afraid it would go too much into camp, jokey territory but I think it´s so solid. Obviously I am super curious about the live performance. If he can actually pull this off live he can have a very good result. Definitely going straight into my top 5
Knowing it was a songwriter camp, i expected this to be a safe pop song. turns out i was very much wrong and loved it from the first listen! instantly ended up in my top 3 :)
Love love love this song! And I am here for the double non-binary representation that ESC 2024 is bringing. As far as Sacha, I don't think she will be staging this. From what I've heard, SVT has her hired on the Eurovision production so I think it's unlikely she'd be working for other countries this time as she will be busy - unless her team/others will be (That's always possible)
I believe the lyric at 13:27 refers to our binary way of thinking in society (either male or female) and how they found their "kingdom come" between the binary. They broke the code of society by not being either a 1 or a 0
I do like this entry from Switzerland. Everything in its component parts is quality Tom. Still, it brings to mind that famous CoCo Chanel quote. You know, the one that suggests, before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take something off! Just think there's just too much going on. Staging for this has to be wild. No way can Remo stand centre stage and be static. This has to have movement. Not necessarily dancing wise but maybe moving LEDs. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this end product. Holding off on downloading......for the moment! Well done Remo and well done Switzerland 🇨🇭👏
oh yea i think theyre going to be moving all over the place. I think the standing still staging days are mostly over now cos of televote only semis. Also I think Nemo is going to want to do something big. I imagine theyll stand still for the operatic part though
I'm a bit sad that the song isn't in Mundart (Swiss German dialect). But in this case the lyrics are so important that I'm also glad they went this route. I'm Eurojournaling this year, and one of my pages is the genres of the entries (as perceived by me). I don't know where to put this, and that's so in line with the message of the song! Now it has multiple bubbles, including one for classical elements and one for rap. What a mix! 😂♥️
Also I‘m wondering if the little backlash towards the songs of Switzerland beeing the same in the last 4 years has driven the Swiss delegation to chose this risky song. Not sure if they would have approved it a few years before. So we should be glad for all the sad boy ballads 😄
I do feel that it was a small part of it. But I also think that they wouldn’t have chosen something different purely for the sake of it. It has to be good
Off topic. Just heard the UK entry. Very underwhelming. Not living up to the hype. This song though is a triumph. So much work going into this song. Nail the staging and a possible top 5.
@@ESCTomwow cool, good luck :) very nice pronunciation! I appreciate how you always make an effort to pronounce things correctly, like Kaarija for example....many just pronounced it something like "carrier"😂 😂
Wrong country in the description. When was Croatia ever the same as Switzerland? 😂😂😂 I do agree with your thoughts. Initially though I wouldn’t’ve because it is just very chaotic but for me it feels like organised chaos. It is so amazing. His artistry and vocals are second-to-none and incredible and I totally love his fashion. I love the meaning of the lyrics (about the discovery of his identity as a non-binary person and it the LGBTQIA+ community, which can also be extended to people like me, I have autism hence why I can relate to this because I am in a minority group, a group who is judged everyday for something they can’t help) and how that ties into the rest of the song (hence why I call it organised chaos). This feels very unique and different and I love it. 9.5/10 for me because it is a little too extra for me and the staging could easily go either way.
@@ESCTomyou need to change that entire sentence mentioning Croatia. Totally get why though because these videos are obviously so much work to do so the description is the last thing you think of. I love these vids by the way and your deep analysis is always so interesting and well thought-out.
My biggest problem with this song is that it starts with the line 'Welcome to the show' which I immediately related to Jann's Gladiator from last year at my first time listening. Throughout the song I was still mad that Jann didn't get to perform at the competition, which spoiled the song for me. Then the positive reactions to the combination of rap and opera also triggered Justice for Jann, since he did the same last year. Unfortunately the song also has the same trash beat as Paskana (which was the thing that I liked least about that song). So for me I can't judge the song on its own merit but rather on the past. Maybe Switzerland staging can break their own code, but I wouldn't bet on it
Kinda a bit unrelated, but I want to draw Bambie so badly, but now can't decide who to pair them up with (star and moon style). The idea was born cause I saw their picture and Ms. Mangos underneath each other in the scoreboard app, and it looked exactly like that line, Bambie cool and Ms. Mango bright. Now Nemo and Bambie kinda look similar in the app, the poses mirror each other and their songs have so much in common and motifs that would lend themselves to drawing (e.g. the 0 and 1 and kingdom come)... Ahhh, I don't know! All that's to say that the last time I've been this inspired to create by a Eurovision entry was Gjon in 2020. This year is amazing.
I'm conflicted about this song, perhaps further listenings will improve my opinion. Right now it feels extremely disconnected, disjointed and not all pieces are fine. Vocally is interesting, but Nemo really will have to sing those notes perfectly live to achieve the best possible impression.
I just can't get into this at all. I do appreciate that it's different and their vocals will stand out (assuming they can do it live, which I don't doubt), but I just find myself looking for something to grab onto melodically and not finding it. Just my taste I think.
this is not going to win for the pure reason of its going to be wayyyyyyy to divisive for the casual some casuals will love it and some will hate it I don't mind it personally but that's the eurovision fan in me it's a little too out there for it to get close to winning for me
@@ESCTom for me it's a little cringe just because the melody doesn't fit the style of rap. I'm no expert in British wrap but I was wincing a little bit as they were trying a bit too hard
I'm so excited by this entry and cant wait to see it performed live. I also love having multiple non-binary representation, and it's cool that both Bambie Thug and Nemo have genre-bending music styles that are just so different. Still rooting for my goth neighbour Bambie 🇬🇧🇮🇪 but this is a banger and straight up in my top 5
I really think Switzerland is overrated, quite weird song and confusing. I dont like personally. Like Spain with two men performing in strings and a bad song.
one thing that I think people haven't picked up on (or I'm reading too far into it) is the operatic motif they do. it happens just before the first chorus, right before the lyrics "this story is my truth", and in opera, it has taken on a meaning of a character being a villain (The Magic Flute - Queen of the Night aria). In Nemo's case, they seem to be using it as being viewed as a villain because they don't fit into "the code", which is another reason they need to break "the code". I hope this intentional because it would elevate the song that much more
There is also the beginning descending chromatic vocal line and bass line at the start which I am sure is meant to be a reference to the Habanera from Bizet's opera Carmen. It is too similar to just be a coincidence (although not quite sure what the meaning behind it is, if anything).
@@maniamuse1319 it might be! the strings plucking sounds like the beginning of the aria and Nemo matches the notes near perfectly in pitch, the rhythm and bpm is just different. Habanera is a piece about love's rebellious nature, so maybe Nemo is using it for rebellious self love? Nemo could just be a fan of good opera tho
@@GettNumber A late answer. But Nemo was a trained opera singer before going into rap and then transitioning to pop. So the song is incredibly fitting :D
Instantly my number 1, the production is beautiful and the video is just so exciting to watch. This is such a good year but in terms of innovation I think Switzerland is, as you say, something really special.
If I had a nickel for every time this year a country previously known for safe, generic pop entries took a huge risk by sending a unique genre-bending song sung by a nonbinary artist that quickly became one of my favorite songs of the entire season, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

My winner!!! I have no words!!
The video reminds me of scenes from Snowpiercer by Bong Joon-ho, it has everything but Tilda Swinton onboard ! I love it, its by far my preferred entry ATM ...
Gimlo didn't believe 2024 could get any better! Love this one so much, might even be Gimlo's favourite
Loved this very early analysis, and your open positive personality 😊 you were also on point, we need to sell that kidney to go to Switzerland next year 😂😂😂
Nemo's song, music, lyrics and performer's authenticity was by far the most complex and enjoyable in this year's contest.
Freddie Mercury reincarnated!
I knew you would like this song as much as I do. So happy for you Tom!
Btw So happy you noticed Jann Gladiator’s similarity!
This song is absolute quality, I am not sure how much I actually like it or if I want to listen to it regularly, but I do appreciate the originality and effort that went into both the song and the video.
I thought the same and when I was walking yesterday and listening, I was really enjoying. Particularly the operatic part
So cool! I love this!
How can you fit 37 songs into number 1? Sounds like all countries are going to take the number 1 spot! Make it 38, icluding one for ESC Tom
That's a fun Shirt choice❣
my only worry is that people won't get it on first listen. It's a FANTASTIC song and in my top 3... now, but I'm embarrassed by how low I put it after my very first listen 😅
At least it will be seen and heard twice since it’s in the semis. That can be important
Ok! Now Italy is in danger 😩
You broke down the song so well, but! The bit about the 0s and 1s (and the mention of 'the code' in general) is not about the internet, it's very on-the-nose imagery, they're non-binary, using the *binary code* to express that!
Haha yea I realised that after. It’s an awesome lyric
Ammonite is a type of fossil so I took my time like Ammonite is referencing how his identity/the song has formed/solidified over time
@@niamhomahony7794 Thank you
Bedankt
Thank you so much Anneke 🙏🏻❤️
😍😍😍
Knowing it was a songwriter camp, i expected this to be a safe pop song. turns out i was very much wrong and loved it from the first listen! instantly ended up in my top 3 :)
Love love love this song! And I am here for the double non-binary representation that ESC 2024 is bringing.
As far as Sacha, I don't think she will be staging this. From what I've heard, SVT has her hired on the Eurovision production so I think it's unlikely she'd be working for other countries this time as she will be busy - unless her team/others will be (That's always possible)
ah ok interesting, i know that she has a team, maybe she will delegate it to them? she normally has a relationship with GEO SWI ALB
The pink hat while doing the rap reminded me of Kalush Orchestra 🩷
Jamiroquai ;-)
@motulifelikefigures1987 both are correct, I guess.
I believe the lyric at 13:27 refers to our binary way of thinking in society (either male or female) and how they found their "kingdom come" between the binary. They broke the code of society by not being either a 1 or a 0
Meant to ask you are my expert. Is this the one they were saying in December to watch out for?
Yep. Teya was saying way back that if they sent this, that it was one to watch out for
I do like this entry from Switzerland.
2:56 White Rabbit from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
I'm a bit sad that the song isn't in Mundart (Swiss German dialect). But in this case the lyrics are so important that I'm also glad they went this route.
I'm Eurojournaling this year, and one of my pages is the genres of the entries (as perceived by me). I don't know where to put this, and that's so in line with the message of the song! Now it has multiple bubbles, including one for classical elements and one for rap. What a mix! 😂♥️
Hey Tom, i live in DBL, is there any ESC community in DBL. would love to be part and chat about songs.
the OGAE Ireland group is huge and really excellent, you should look them up. they have events and everything
Wow Tom, do you speak French too?
yea im roughly intermediate, but im studying to take the B2 DELF exam, which would put me at advanced intermediate 🤞🏻
I do agree with your thoughts. 9.5/10 for me because it is a little too extra for me and the staging could easily go either way.
thanks, ill change it now
@@ESCTomyou need to change that entire sentence mentioning Croatia. Totally get why though because these videos are obviously so much work to do so the description is the last thing you think of. I love these vids by the way and your deep analysis is always so interesting and well thought-out.
@ESCTom he reminds me of Mika!
I really hope this nonbinary stuff doesen't matter.... He's just a great artist... full stop... Great peace of art there! 👌
Maybe Switzerland staging can break their own code, but I wouldn't bet on it
it is already on 5. place in the odds 🎉❤
Just my taste I think.
this is not going to win for the pure reason of its going to be wayyyyyyy to divisive for the casual some casuals will love it and some will hate it I don't mind it personally but that's the eurovision fan in me it's a little too out there for it to get close to winning for me
did you think the rap part sounded a bit british btw?
@@ESCTom for me it's a little cringe just because the melody doesn't fit the style of rap. I'm no expert in British wrap but I was wincing a little bit as they were trying a bit too hard
I'm so excited by this entry and cant wait to see it performed live. I also love having multiple non-binary representation, and it's cool that both Bambie Thug and Nemo have genre-bending music styles that are just so different. Still rooting for my goth neighbour Bambie 🇬🇧🇮🇪 but this is a banger and straight up in my top 5
Im sorry after a few seconds I turned it off . Just not for me
I really think Switzerland is overrated, quite weird song and confusing. I dont like personally. Like Spain with two men performing in strings and a bad song.
And yet they won
one thing that I think people haven't picked up on (or I'm reading too far into it) is the operatic motif they do. it happens just before the first chorus, right before the lyrics "this story is my truth", and in opera, it has taken on a meaning of a character being a villain (The Magic Flute - Queen of the Night aria).
So many styles and personalities in one song, it's just amazing! Switzerland is sending a great, great song to Sweden. Have fun, Nemo...🥰
I am Swiss and I am so happy they chose Nemo. He is a great and well known artist and cool to now know he is non binary 👍😎❤️🇨🇭
12 points from Belgium!!! ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
Instantly my number 1, the production is beautiful and the video is just so exciting to watch. This is such a good year but in terms of innovation I think Switzerland is, as you say, something really special.
Fredrik Rydman who did the stage for Käärijä last year, will do it for Nemo this year. Very exciting!
Well said 😂👌
