Thanks so much for making and posting these videos! I'm moving to Iceland soon myself and your blogs have been so helpful in helping me prep and think through all the pesky logistics.
Thank you so much for showing your experiences , Sonia! As a person who is going to move to Iceland soon, i found this is so helpful and quite encouraging as well. I am looking forward to seeing more videos from you. keep it up ! Og takk fyrir!
I was looking for info about what to wear in Iceland in December, and found your great “series.” All your observations about life in Iceland are so interesting! I can’t wait to see Reykjavik for myself the first few days of December; just a short visit on my way to Europe. I also know Edinburgh well, as I went to college there many years ago, so I enjoy your videos of your visits home too! And of course, now I am well informed about to how to dress warmly ;got all my merino wool layers ready to go! Thanks for all the tips!
Caught Northern Lights briefly last Tuesday night. Heard tonight will be perfect! Sonia, thanks so much for your vlogs. Your information was so helpful in planning the trip. Hope to be back this summer as well :) Congrats to your boys on the win over Kosovo!
It must be so scary moving to another country! And I can only imagine how isolated you must feel at times...but really happy in overall you're happy with your viking ❤
you look so happy , i too have followed you from the beginning as I wanted to find out more about Iceland before we visited, your info was great and we came over in October, it was amazing ! it is expensive too, but we live in Perth WA, and compared to where we are from (manchester, UK), its also very expensive to live here, so we found it to be quite similar in price to Perth. We moved over here 10 years ago and we have had many ups and downs too, so I can definitely relate to some of the issues you have experienced, as even though we moved to an English speaking country, the way we grew up in the UK is very different to growing up here, as we see now with our Grandchildren. All the best to you both, love the videos, keep them up !
Hi Barbara, thanks so much for your comment. I visited a Scottish friend almost 10 years ago now who moved to Perth too. I travelled the Australian coast line and loved WA the most. The outback and camping, in just a 'swag' bag under the stars, was simply amazing. The landscape is surreal and I remember thinking the sky was huge whilst driving long distances, on empty, straight roads, with nothing but the horizon to look at. Thank you so much for continuing to watch and support. xx
It has been fun following your adventures in Iceland. Wish there had been blogs/vlogs when I first moved from Scotland to Rio many moons ago,I might have done something similar. Still I have a whole collection of hand written correspondence (soon to be relics) to recap at times.I hope you continue to keep us up to date. We visited in Dec 2016 and I can say we experienced the harshest of weather but it was worth it!!Amazing place! Good luck to you and Ingimar.
Thank you very much for sharing this with us. This is the first time that I learn about Iceland, which has already interested me with its incredible landscape. Thank again for letting us know about traveling vital things.
This was so lovely to watch Sonia! Have followed your Icelandic adventure from the start and cant believe it's a year. Always enjoy your channel keep up the good work! So excited for you - lots of good things coming up I'm sure. Wish you & Ingimar all the very very best - must be coming very close to your big day - yay! Hug x
Loved hearing all about your first year in Iceland! Its definitely different to just visiting I agree, and it was interesting to hear about it! Loved all the clips you added in too!
I know this is an old video but I resently found your channel and love watching your videos and seeing your view on the country. Im from Iceland and live in the easter part (Fáskrúðsfjörður). I lived in other countrys when I was younger (from age 10-18) and even though Im from here it was a bit of a culture shock for me moving back! So I can imagen that its hard for someone you doesnt really know anybody here to move here :)
Yes, moving around from country and culture is a challenging but interesting thing to do and I think we learn so much from doing it. Iceland isn't so different to Scotland in many ways but in others the difference is vast. It's a few months on from this video but thank you for watching and commenting xx
Congrats on a year! It looks like I'll be planning a trip for 2018 - and maybe combining it with a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on the way there or back. We shall see! Keep up the great videos, they're super fun to watch! :)
Me and my partner visited Iceland a few weeks ago for 5 days. We travel a bit so was a little prepared, but if there is any advice we can give it's advanced preparation, we hired a car and drove the ring road staying in a different town each night, we booked all our accommodation in advanced through booking.com, if you really look you can find some amazing places for very cheap, we paid no more then £60 for a double room per night. Such a stunning island, but not somewhere I could live.
I agree with you living somewhere is totally different than visiting. I visited friends in Scotland back in 2008 for two weeks and fell absolutely in love with the country so I tried for two years to get back there. When it finally happened things didn't go as planned and had to move back home after six months of living there. I will always love Scotland but at times it was lonely and the lack of a real job or some form of purpose started to really bring me down. I also missed out on seeing more of the country because travel wasn't so easy for me the second time around since I was on a tight budget. I loved Iceland the first time visiting there and I am excited to get the opportunity to see the country again but you are right the tourism is just crazy out of hand. I get I am a tourist myself but for a country as small as it is I worry that disrespecting visitors will ruin the delicate environment and the beauty there. I had a bad experience (awful fellow tourist) at Jokulsarlon the first time seeing it that took the magic and beauty away from my experience. I think people there understand what you are talking about in this video and none of it sounds disrespectful just observations on your part.
So many good points, having a purpose is so important and juggling that so you have the money and time to actually see the country you live in is also a challenge. Looking forward to you coming back over, hopefully we can meet up!!
That would be cool I think I am only in Reykjavik for part of a day. I didn't book a lot of time in the city since I wanted to be out in the countryside as much as possible. I am going to try and tackle a hike in Thorsmork on my last full day in Iceland eekkk!!! Super excited for that :) The day before I will be getting into Reykjavik hopefully around midday. (Sept. 22) maybe we could meet up for tea if you are free that day :) Kind of itching for the rye ice cream at Cafe Loki :) I booked an airbnb right behind Halgrimskirkja so I am pretty centrally located.
Hi Sonia! I've been living in Iceland for 1 year and 3 months and i love it! I love the extremes :) but i agree with you.... everything is soo expensive! I almost cried the first time i had to visit the dentist! You should definitely travel north... ;)
Thanks for posting this update and very good overview. I plan on visiting one day and might consider staying for the third half of my life. To that end, can you plan a video with a POV of seniors living there? How do seniors live, are they treated well, are there senior organizations like AARP here in the states, are there any special medical plans, clinics or accommodations geared to them, transportation discounts, retirement housing (assisted living apartments) etc.? Or do you push them out to sea on an ice flow when they're too much trouble to care for LOL. Remember, you may grow old there and will face these issues too. And perhaps you can do something now to make that better for you when you get there. As we age, time becomes malleable; your next year will fly by even faster. Best Regards.
I will try to find out some information, unfortunately Ingimar doesn't have anyone from the older generation left but we will ask around. All good points, thank you for commenting, watching and continuing to support.
I think it's wonderful that you moved there to be with your hubby! I'm Scottish-Icelandic and I'm sure that you'll have a wonderful life! Thankfully, all Icelanders speak great English! I would recommend the book Islenka Fyrir Alla if you want to learn the language. Wishing you all the very best from Luxembourg!
Hey there. Love your videos! I've been thinking about moving to Iceland for such a long time now.. I'm 18 years old and have just finished school. Thinking about moving there very soon but not sure on how to get a job if I don't really have any experience because just finished school. Do you need experience in order to get a job in Iceland? I heard it's quite easy to get a job in Iceland. Also I don't know where to start. Like should I just book a ticket to Iceland and see how it goes or should I apply from here and plan everything out? I'm just stressed out and don't know what to do. I would take any job.
I'm not sure where you heard this from but I would have to disagree, finding a job here can be challenging. It all depends what you want to do. There are jobs in some restaurants and cleaning jobs, hotels take on staff for the peak seasons too. Any other job will require you to speak the language. I could suggest you look for work first as there are a lot of people also wanting to move here so if you have a plan before you land, you will get your residency and apartment much easier. Good luck and i hope you get to come here soon.
Hi I am from India. Everything is cheap here from food to living, to healthcare. Really almost everything. But it's highly populated country. All I can hear outta my window is the honks and cars and people like tiny ants. And Iceland just vibes with me so deeply. Can you please tell what kinda stuff do we not get or is difficult to find in Icelandic supermarkets. P.S a big time foodie. :)
In Italy we have a public health system, most times free. In some areas, though, the queues are incredibly long and you can be forced to wait weeks, months and occasionally more than one year (!) to get the visit. Therefore, often you are virtually forced to look for a private doctor, which costs 80-150 euros. Plus the prescriptions. If the first treatment fails, you may pay for a further visit, further drugs, and so on. Icelandic doctors seem heaven to me.
You are so so so lucky,,,i would love to live in REYJAVIK or even anywhere in ICELAND,,,i really want to visit the thermal baths (blue lagoon) etc, and being lonely, isolated, etc, wow thats sounds like a life of luxory to me 😂
Great video! you're one of the VERY few people that actually talked about numbers and didn't just say "Iceland is very expensive!". I'd love to know more about the price of things there. And also, do you know if an independent artist (say a clothes designer, a musician or a tattoo artist) can live there without having to get an "actual" job in tbe sistem? thanks a lot! your videos are allways helpful
I have a video on this coming soon but to be honest, no. I know a lot of artists and designers here, they all work online and mainly sell abroad. I don't know much about the music scene, that might ok. Tattoos are a big thing here so that might be worth looking into.
Hi! I’m looking into moving to Iceland in roughly 3 years once I’m out of high school for a year before college. I’m looking into getting a job in tourism, and I don’t speak Icelandic, although I am willing to start trying to learn it. I’m from the US, so I know it’s harder for me to move there than say a person from the UK, but I’m still willing to try. I visited Iceland for a week last December, so I got a taste of the winter. I’m planning on coming back next summer to see how the summer compares, and to “scout things out”. My motives to go are, the beautiful nature, desire to get away from the US (if you get me), and to get some real world experience, meet people, and maybe learn a bit of the language. I’m only looking to live there for a year before I attend college back in the US, so I don’t need permanent living advice, but I do want to know if this is possible, and if there’s any tips you could give me. Takk!
A thought crossed my mind, with the amount of tourism money coming into iceland; why are the price of things so expensive? I mean, Icelandic government could afford to pay the import fees and still reduce pricing. I will have to give iceland the side 👁 on that.
I find it more and more upsetting and worrying the more I hear about visitors opinions of Iceland. I completely agree, prices are far too high and the country is not prepared for tourism.
Isolated, lonely? Do you mean my heaven? 😂 I've been thinking about moving one day. But really I dont want to be a nuisance to locals... although I dont even want to be in the city. I want a quaint piece of land... but that's probably impossible lol.
Sounds like exactly like America except cheaper.....Doctor visit...100 to 120 pounds and meds are from about 65 to 400 pounds depending on how sick you are.... and to eat out at a semi decent restaurant 40 to 50 pounds.... McDonalds will eat up a 20 pound note any more
Please Sonia in your next video get to the point, you kept saying the same thing over and over again - we really needed to know more about your life there - we know it's expensive - tell us more!
I went to Iceland on holiday and the weather was absolutely insane. Was the best holiday I’ve ever had.
haha, sums it up really!!
Sonia Nicolson you still living in Iceland?
I can't believe it's been a year. It has been so much fun watching your journey! Thanks for sharing it with all of us :)
I know, it's flown by. I'm so glad I recorded the time as it's fun to watch back over but so fun to share it too.
Thanks so much for making and posting these videos! I'm moving to Iceland soon myself and your blogs have been so helpful in helping me prep and think through all the pesky logistics.

Have thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos and candid comments! Headed there tomorrow, can't wait!
Have an amazing time Wendy, the weather is just perfect right now and you have a good chance for the northern lights too :)
Caught Northern Lights briefly last Tuesday night. Heard tonight will be perfect! Sonia, thanks so much for your vlogs. Your information was so helpful in planning the trip. Hope to be back this summer as well :) Congrats to your boys on the win over Kosovo!
I have so enjoyed watching your candid adventures since I found your channel about 8 months ago. No matter the content I feel like I've made a friend!
Aw, thanks so much Amanda, it means so much to me. Shout if you ever have a video suggestion or request too. Have a great day!!
It must be so scary moving to another country! And I can only imagine how isolated you must feel at times...but really happy in overall you're happy with your viking ❤

It's a beautiful place .
sure is!!
Great video!
Thanks!!
Saludos desde Mexico, Greetings.
i dont like the idea of being isolated. that makes me realize that the place is not for long period of stay but of course its a heaven for vacation.
A thought crossed my mind, with the amount of tourism money coming into iceland; why are the price of things so expensive? I mean, Icelandic government could afford to pay the import fees and still reduce pricing. I will have to give iceland the side 👁 on that.

Hey I will be coming there next week. Thanks for the information. Am coming for school. May be we could keep in touch. Am a Cameroonian by nationality
Next year sorry
I have visited Iceland twice. My second trip was disappointing due to the presence of fast foods and the rise in prices
Yes, the prices have risen but there are a lot more offers on like 2 for 1 and happy hours - you just need to be on the look out.
I love Eslend I want to know the friends of Eslend😍
esland ? iceland ísland lærðu að stafa learn to spell
Please show us traditional food of Iceland
we will try. Have you watched the Iceland Food Challenge video we did?
my town grundarfjorður is the most lonley place
Have you made a video where u only talk icelandic if u haven't can u try
i live there and its boring i want to move to another country a lil bit
I admire you
How much can geothermal enginners make their been thinking of living their ?
This is silly! It's way more than that price related in the USA
The average doctor visit in America is like $100+.......$30 or $40 isn't that bad :/
That's crazy!! So scary.
Sonia Nicolson yeeeaah dont get sick here if you visit, an ambulance ride for my dad that was 30 mins was $3000
I bet Iceland has more blue eyes than Netherlands or Finland.
Isolated, lonely?
Do you mean my heaven? 😂 I've been thinking about moving one day. But really I dont want to be a nuisance to locals... although I dont even want to be in the city. I want a quaint piece of land... but that's probably impossible lol.
Get packing then...I'm sure you'd get a nice place in a town outside Reykjavik and have a pretty good life.
Iceland sounds nearly as expensive as Ireland 😁
Quite possibly!!
Sounds like exactly like America except cheaper.....Doctor visit...100 to 120 pounds and meds are from about 65 to 400 pounds depending on how sick you are.... and to eat out at a semi decent restaurant 40 to 50 pounds.... McDonalds will eat up a 20 pound note any more
Why is the number of tourist doubling scary?? That's bringing money to your country.
Please Sonia in your next video get to the point, you kept saying the same thing over and over again - we really needed to know more about your life there - we know it's expensive - tell us more!
What would you like to know Carol?
What the fuck where you doing with the president?
