HOW TO: Chipped Weld Beads (Yes, seriously)

- Weld beads are one of the most exposed parts on armored vehicles. In many cases they stand out from their flat surfaces, which makes them prone to chipping. Chipping, in our scale modelling language, is when the paint chips off and exposes the surface underneath, which in most cases is metal.
I’ve already shown you how to paint steel chips and basic rust effects, so now I’m gonna explain how to chip weld beads.

Hey mates, this effect happens quite often on most tanks.

Like I said, I can't just put someone else's pictures in my videos and adding links in the video description was somehow de-monetizing the video, so the best I can do is occasionally drop a reference picture link in the comments.
Night Shift Great Video again! Love it. I think painting shiny parts onto any scale model was „banned „ while weathering evolved during the last decades. People wanted to get away or find a new way of doing things, apart from the Verlinden style . It was and still is a „no no“ in the modeling world nowadays. But painting weld beads is a totally different story . Thanks for showing that, Martin.

Gunnar you totally nailed it!!! Silver and metallic paints are frowned upon mostly as they’re considered a beginner’s choice. But if you use them for the correct task they produce awesome results. That being said, don’t use them to paint tracks, tow cables or tools 😁
I’ve never made a model in my life, nor am I ever likely to make one... but I absolutely love these videos!

Welds are hardened as horses due to the thermal apport, like, quenched steel, therefore they are prone to a lot of things... for some reason they peels off the paint easier, even when protected, and mostly it is because the affected zone, AKA the substract (plate) welded lost its metalographic properties and helds a lot of pre-stress from this, that means that its electrons are flying crazy and love to oxidade. That makes the primer goes off, and as nature calls, the paint chips also from the beads. They also seem polished because when exposed, and as hardened surfaces, they became more polished than oxidated. or something like that. Welds are also not my thing, but I am a machine designer and I like to observe weathering a lot when on field trip...
PS: yes, a lot of weld rods have chromium, what is the basic component for hardening, but also gives INOX steel the.. INOX capability...

Modern welds are not to pronounced, so this affect is lessened. Also on equipment like US modern stuff like the LAV-25 the factory white primer sealer is pretty tough. It that the raised parts get constant wear thus the rust is often brushed off? Welds do rust. So as always try to get photo references as you said. Thanks, I always enjoy the videos !
To be honest, I would have never have even considered this until this video. To be fair, it kinda makes sense; if every other part of the tank/vehicle is susceptible to chipping, why not the weld seams?

Ive been using mr metal dark iron for raw beads,if you dont shake bottle you get a realistic effect when you buff it.The contrast is better with less graphite in paintmix.And the sooty black/grey matt of unbuffed paint is almost perfect.Bieng unshaken it flows like a pinwash.Thanks for video,have factory 'weldseams' on rfm sherman to do,so perfect timing.

HI Martin - High quality video once again - personally I have never tried to chip weld lines - however after seeing your video and how striking it is I will certainly try this. As for the distressed painting technique - still working on that one - as you mention if the paint is not contrasted enough with the base it gets lost in the weathering - working on the balance between too bright and not bright enough is tricky - otherwise I think I like it - Thanks again.

Another great video, they all have been. Regarding copyright of photos...you can show copyright photos for reference and educational purposes as long as you provide the reference or acknowledge the copyright holder. If it a US Signal Corps photo from WW2 there is no copyright. Same with their manuals.

Cool technique Martin. I've always shied away from silver paint for chips as I thought it made the armour look toy-like but doing this way really looks pretty good. I still prefer pencil or silver Prismacolor pencils but will have to explore this technique a little more. Always enjoy your videos, KUTGW!

@@NightShiftScaleModels Yes exactly! Silver was always considered taboo and to honest most modellers just don't know how to use it properly. You've laid it out so perfectly in this video I think everyone who watches will gain a lot more confidence going forward. Great stuff buddy!!
In the US, I believe the first amendment covers commentary as fair use. So showing a reference image while commentating on its features should be fine. But of course everything is expensive legal or illegal; so you could instead mention the photographers name or link to official postings of the references. edit: Ah. Saw the pinned comment. Auto-demonetization is just stupid.

Personally not a fan of bloopers; I'm seeing several channels ending their videos with bloopers and it just siphons time.

High nickel content rods/electrodes used to weld at times. The alloy doesnt oxidize as readily.

This effect really sets the stage for the metallic sheen that gets emphasized later on with graphite, metallic pigments, etc. which has become one of my favourite parts about the weathering process as these effects add "weight" necessary to shed that plastic toy-like "label". I also noticed that your completed BMP-3 has metallic chips instead of the darker rusty tones? Is this because those soviet APC's were built out of military grade aluminium and not steel?

Yep, the BMP-3 is made of aluminium, except the additional bolt-on plates, those are made from steel
@@NightShiftScaleModels Thanks Martin! Gotta keep that in mind for my Arabic BMP-3 that I've got in the stash. Definitely creates a whole new kind of finish compared to the heavy steel vehicles from WWII.

This is not the best choice for a first model, Italeri kits are often pretty terrible
@@Cwaluch have to disagree !!! Italeri kit got me hooked on 1/35th. Not all great but thats the same with a lot of manufacturers . Their new stuff is good and with Tamiya probably being one of the best , if not the best manufacturer of model kits around they rebox a lot of Italeri kits and I can't see Tamiya reboxing terrible kits . They don't , I've built a couple and they've fallen together. That's my opinion. We are all different !!! That's what makes us wonderful !!!!! Ha ha ha
@@MottysMilitaryModels Check out Panzermeister36's video on Tamiya/Italeri rebox of P40 tank. It's definitely not Tamiya quality. That being said they are not all bad, but it's more of a gamble than some of the other brands.
Yeh I watched Evans video and I was shocked it wasn't a stug or a dragon kit !!! Ha ha like I said though we all are different with our opinions. See if I was starting out again I would suggest , Italeri , Tamiya Academy as they aren't bad kits and ralitevly easy !! Where as I think when you've been about a bit and got, say , Dragon , Meng , Kinetic etc etc kits under your belt you look back at the Tamiya and Italeri kits etc etc as a little easy and not such great with detail and stuff but I think I'm an odd one out as I still have Tamiya and Takom kits as my joint favourite manufacturers . The new Tamiya kits are fantastic they really are and the latest Kangaroo just released by Italeri is beautiful along with their Jagdpanther with the crew included !!
Lol my first tank ever was actually an Italeri Leopard 1A5 😁 and then my 3rd tank was their Porsche Tiger 1. Some of their kits are not that bad. They have ugly rubber tracks, but a beginner will find them more enjoyable than individual links.
Hi @Nightsht i hope this comment dosent go unseen, but i`m seen that you are heaving some "problems"regarding photos and the fear of being copyrighted.
Well i think i may have a solution for that, in my city there is a military museum with some vehicles like the Sherman,m8 greyhound, m41, leopard a1a5 and some other vehicle (some exotic), and i do have a reasonable amount of pictures , some showing very close closeup photos, including the shining welds. I am also have some pictures of other vehicles from museums, or monuments that i`ve seen in my travels, and they were all took by me.
I would love to share them with you for free, with no royalty (if you really want i can even sing a document for you), this way you can use them in you videos without the fear of being copyrighted.

Are you making any damages, chipping, weathering effects underneath the tank (bottom), isn't that the most area that will be damaged and scratched? If you do, can you please show how ?)))) Thank you
In most cases no. If the bottom is somehow more exposed than usual, then just a good coat of mud and dust. Most of the time I just stipple small amounts of mud around the edges of the tank belly to create an illusion of some weathering being there. Other than that, nobody will ever see that part of your model.

I'm a bit surprised that Mr.Metal Chrome silver is working well for you. I suppose it's fine for small parts or chips, but this specific type of paint rubs off with just finger. And it can't be clear coated (while retaining it's shine). Personally I like the regular Mr.Color lacquer metallics.
Hmmm, interesting! I use it on steel wheels as well. It can be polished using graphite powder into insane steel shine
What model is that IS-7, I remember seeing an IS-7 by Trumpeter and I was thinking of picking it up.
I'm not sure you know what an IS-7 is, but that definitely is not one. The IS-7 never even went into production and had a rounded turret, like all IS designs after the IS-3.
Due to boxy shape of this, it is much more likely an early to mid war tank.

Those shiny weld lines indicate a freshly (in the last few hours) welded weld, not chipping. Were those welds just freshly re-welded? No, so don't silver the welds.
The bright silver ie. exposed fresh steel means its been rubbed just in the last few hours. Over night the steel will rust. So showing silver welds over all the tank means either the tank has just been re-welded or about 100 soldiers have been climbing over that tank that day. The brown rust is much more authentic for weld seams, where the paint has been rubbed off but over night they have rusted to brown.
nope, check the reference picture in the pinned comment. or range target tanks. I doubt those were freshly rewelded or climbed over by soldiers
@@NightShiftScaleModels That's an usual weld metal, not normal. You can see its a touch up but some time ago as the paint has rubbed off. How many war time tanks are getting stainless steel welding rods to touch up their cracks.Note the other areas in that picture with original welding: brown.
If only steel welds would stay bright then I wouldn't have to paint them.
I’m really no expert on this mate. What you’re saying might be true. I’m replicating what I see in photos - rusted out Centurion, Comet and other british hulks on shooting ranges, completely rotten without any of the original paint, just rust and shiny welds. T-55s in desert scrapyards, same thing. Tanks in museums, modern and old. And then of course operational vehicles, especially noticeable on Soviet tanks from recent conflicts in Ukraine and Syria. Obviously harder to pinpoint in WW2 pictures but if you look close enough it can be sometimes seen.

😭😭😭 had frame protection (hand cut from 3M tape) and chainslap silencer too, still got those chips. Not even Invis covers weld lines. Oh well, now I got full carbon frame, so no more welds to chip 😅 and obviously completely covered in 3M and electrical tape

You can show those in your videos mate. Copy righted material can be used educationally and falls under fair use. Just cite where you got it from and you're golden.

I was thinking the same - educational and for the purpose of discussion. I would definately have thought it would come under the fair use policy
Issue is, if (when) UA-cam marks the video as a copyright violation, and you will respond with a counter-claim, UA-cam will usually still take weeks to accept it....by which point the video will have already gotten about 95% of the views it ever will.
If ad revenue is the concern, then you won't get back any of the revenue from the time before UA-cam accepted the claim. It will all go to UA-cam or the claimant. And no, you can't sue UA-cam or anything, since this is all part of the terms and conditions you agree to upon uploading your videos.
If copyright strikes are the concern, you only need two to have your channel blocked from uploading for a few months. You have to then gamble that UA-cam will accept your counter-claims and that you won't build up too many strikes in the time before UA-cam starts accepting your counters. UA-cam really doesn't care about content creators in the same way it cares about getting in legal trouble, so the rules are quite brutal. Though I did hear they will be changing the claim system soon? Maybe they already did?
@@Panzermeister36 that's fair. I've never really had any issues with photos in videos. It's usually using other people's videos in yours that often get copy right claims. Either way, excellent content! I remember having a music issue in a video I have on another channel get flagged and all I had to do was click "accept" that I was using it in a manner which I was allowed and not infringing on any copy rights.

Určite nie šedú, lebo by na tej nemeckej šedej zanikla. Skôr tmavohnedú alebo nejakú jemne hrdzavú ako som použil na tomto tanku. Prípadne továrenskú základovku, tá je tmavočervená.

This has been driving me bat soup crazy. The look is. Very worth it but my primer and paint whatever coating, paint. Is rejecting me. Tamiya putty and even some dust added to thicken it. I apply the tiny roll of it. And I’m ready to give it the look. And it won’t stick to the model 😤😤😤and then it drys and. Smudges just. Doesn’t have the look. I changed methods and my tool is now a glasses tiny flathead screwdriver rounded to a spoon shape. But as soon as I start making the bead. The bead lifts off the freakin line😠😠
