Long story short, here is what happened and why in Astartes:
All the grey armored warriors were Astartes, which are genetically engineered super soldiers with minds and bodies many times more powerful than the "baseline" humans who saw them stomping. They are called Space Marines, and are from the Adeptus Astartes Chapter "Retributors." (The creator of the animation made this chapter up for the videos, they dont exist in the lore)
This detachment has been sent, probably ordered by the Inquisition, to destroy the orb artefacts we see in the video. A squad was sent on a breaching pod to enter the ship, which they did by flying at it and cutting into the hull with lasers, kill any they encounter, and render the warp artefacts inert or destroyed.
On their way to the orbs, the squad encounters a pair of psykers. These psykers are powerful beings who possess a connection to "The Warp." It is a dimension connected but also separate to our own. There creatures which are created and fueled by the power of mortal souls and powerful emotion seek to corrupt or destroy mortals and their dimension (mostly just because).
The masks you see their pair of psykers are called Psychic Hoods. They allow psykers to channel their powers much more controllably, as some psykers, if they are not extremely powerful, or attempt to channel forces more powerful than they are, can go mad, become focal points for rifts into the warp, or even become demon possessed.
Inspite of what you might think, the pair of psykers we see are not particularly powerful ones. The most powerful psykers, called Alphas, can be capable of destroying cities or star ships. This is probably one of the reasons they wear the hoods, to give them a boost in power and control. Also, the hoods allow another person a measure of control over the wearer.
The Astartes squad kill them in short order, and proceed into a vault in the enemy ship, which is likely psychically shielded, to find the orbs.
When the astartes "stab" the orb, we see a connection has been made with it, which allows the Inquisitor back on the Astartes ship to essentially listen in on the psychic communication between the orbs.
This was clearly not a good idea. After the unintelligible conversation the Inquisitor hears between the orbs, this is what the orbs said to each other.
    Orb1 "who is here?"
Orb2 "I have failed, brother" (couldn't stop the marines or corrupt them)
Orb1 "We have all failed" (he's captured)
Orb1 "the Astartes deny our touch" (they have a hard time controlling them)
Orb2 "You must return... Break your seal!" (returning from the warp to "normal" universe and get free from the inquisitors seal)
    Orb1 "Impossible, we'll never survive!"
Orb2 "You must. take the alpha" (the inquisitor since he's the highest ranked and has psyker powers, he is the "Alpha". If the orb controls him, it has the entire ship 'the Daemon that is.').
This is where the inquisitor drops his concentration to warn them, (“Pull them back immediately!”). The inquisitor is immediately corrupted by the power of the warp wielded by the orb artefacts, and we see him receiving visions, chanting heresy, and finally succumbing to madness.
As orb 1 (the daemon) does this, it takes control of the inquisitor, but before it can do anything the commander warns his troops ("Get them out Now!")and takes the soon to be possessed inquisitor out.
The impulsor sergeant (space marine) receives comms to watch out but its too late and the Daemon of orb 2 sucks them into the warp.
Warhammer 40k is extremely hostile space the moment it uses its psyker powers within the warp it lights up like a Christmas tree and other daemons kill it thus it lets the marines go and they get warped to a different location.
Fun fact... if the commander was a second or 2 slower the entire ship would have been corrupted and they would have died. Also possessed Psykers are very hard to kill,
blowing off the head doesn't mean they are dead, you really have to dismantle the whole body."
Immediately we go back to our hero Astartes squad and see why they were warned. Their orb "takes" them. Dragging them within the confines of the orb. We dont really know where they go when we see them tethered inside the orb. Whether the Astartes are in the warp, or a psychic vision, some other place... who knows. What we do see is that our hero Astartes are then teleported (through the warp - which is why he throws up blood) to a death planet.
And that is basically what the story of Astartes is.

@Random Platypus with Internet well full auto isn't necessarily a spray and pray thing, there are tactical reasons for it like suppression, and also the fact that not all 40k enemies are man sized. For instance if old one eye or skarbrand suddenly appeared in front of a group of marines it would make a lot of sense to go full auto, and it wouldn't be a spray and pray thing but well aimed shots, which would be made easier by a fucking stock.

They only really used full auto when suppressing a physker anything else is overkill and a waste for them to be suppressing.

Astarte began as a fan animation but the guy was contacted by Games Workshop who went on to hire him (and other people who made fan animations). However, as a part of the deal he had remove the original video which is why you won't find high quality uploads of it on UA-cam.

Thing about 40k is, the scale is absolutely immense. This story is just about ONE mission by ONE squad of Marines on ONE ship encountering ONE eldritch foe, orbiting ONE planet.
The Imperium (as far as its administration can tell) rules a million worlds scattered all around the galaxy, like individual particles of water in a cloud of mist. And the logistical distances between each are equally fluid.
At all times there are great tragedies, horrifying atrocities, epic heroism and dastardly schemes going on at different parts of the galaxy and the setting offers ten thousand years of active history to play any and all of it out.

"what is this" last words of everyone before falling into the grimdark future.
    Also to answer some questions
    1) some psykers have cybernetic enhancements to stabilize themselves when using powers, or to help navigate ships around the warp (basically 40k version of hell), if they are incautious they can get corrupted by chaos(like the dude who got fisted)
    2) dude with different armor might be a primaris, which is stronger in everyway compared with normal astartes
Correction by brother Alex : dude is a veteran marine, one with cape is a captain or lieutenant
    3) psykers come from many races (except the Tau due to their weak minds and the Tyranids, which works in a singular hivemind) side note : Tyranids can have psykers if a gene stealer infects a psykers, resulting in a potential psykers strain.
    4) technically speaking every Ork is a psykers due to something called "the Ork power of belief". Basically they can belief stuff in existence, e.g. they belief red makes stuff go faster, so It did.
    5) space templars are basically the black templar chapter an the grey knights (demon hunters)
    6) the orb might be a corrupted warp drive, the ship uses it as an engine to enter, navigate and exit the warp. If I recall one of them showed up in space hulk deathwing

      @GeneralArmchair 2 роки тому +8

@@rayanderson5797 It's probably just statistically more likely that the guy was a psyker in service to the inquisition rather than an inquisitor that was also a psyker. Both psykers and inquisitors are kind of rare, so overlap between the subsets of the population is kind of special. That said a decent number of inquisitors in the books are psykers, so I guess pyskers are a bit more common amidst the population of inquisitors than among the general human population. An argument can be made that inquisitors may not want to dirty their hands by doing the dirty work of the operation themselves, so the actual inquisitor might be orchestrating the operation at more of a strategic/administrative level rather than actively performing that kind of psychic monitoring of the orbs himself. All of that said, we've also seen inquisitors across a whole spectrum of personalities so we can't truly jump to a conclusion about how hands-on the inquisitor might be. Personally in my opinion the portrayal of the psyker didn't seem important enough to be an inquisitor and he felt more akin to one of the disposable red-shirts in star trek. At the end of the day though I don't think that we have enough information in the film to conclusively decide one way or another whether or not he was the inquisitor in charge or just part of the inquisitor's retinue.

We know from an interview with Dan Abnett that the Emperor has died and revived many times on the Throne (since he is a perpetual and CHOOSES to revive at his same body) that the image of all the emaciated corpses on thrones could be a visual representation of how many times the Emperor has died while on the throne. Maybe a Chaos entity is attempting to tempt the Marine away from the Emperium by showing his “God” is dying constantly, or it’s a manifestation in the warp of the Emperor’s suffering that has been relegated to that world in the Warp.

No matter how much time has passed, I just love the really small detail of the senior marine (Sorry, it's been a long time since I've seen rank insignia) gesturing to one of the marines on guard to exit the room
From what I remember mostly Astartes of highest seniority were the ones that directly dealt with chaos corruption as to minimize influence
Like that detail and even nailing the bolter round timers just makes me fall in love with the attention to detail of this series

The complete absence of good guys in the 40k setting is part of the appeal. You can make cool brutal battles without feeling too bad about their horrific deaths. The Imperium of Man is a collapsing, impossibly authoritarian regime so huge that it’s probably going to take all of humanity with it when it finally starts to stop meaningfully existing. The setting is so chock-full of things gnawing at the empire’s decaying carcass that you can literally plug in anything and people will just shrug, because no matter how bad it is, there are too many problems for it to register as too much. You can do wild shit with the setting just because of how collapsed things are at any given time, one of my favorite stories is about a regiment of aliens who are legally human because the paperwork to fix it is literally scarier than being executed, because it really, literally is a longer, slower torture than anything any Imperial Inquisitor or Lord of Torture can possibly come up with.

40K is a massive series and well worth looking into. Luetin09 is great for lore, very in depth but a little dry. Bricky is good for a lighter, more memey explanation, but gets a few things wrong. With Astartes, I think the creator made up some of things within it (the orb, the specific psyker characters, etc), and there mightn't be a proper explanation for what it is.

Thought I’d share some context for those here with similar questions to Lumi here.
The Space Marines, more formally known as Adeptus Astartes, are transhuman super soldiers organised into chapters. Each individual Space Marine is effectively a one-man army and are altered with some extreme bodily enhancements. They are each adorned in power armour capable of shrugging off all but the strongest weaponry and their standard weaponry is a rifle-shaped rocket launcher known as a Bolter. Put simply, they’re medieval knights in space.
Psykers are people with some sort of connection to another dimension known as the Warp. This connection enables Psykers to wield space magic. It’s a bit like the force, but far more dangerous. Without proper training, Psykers can and will become a danger to themselves and everyone around them, as their connection to the Warp can result in insanity, unstable powers or even daemonic possession. For such reasons, the existence of Psykers in the Imperium (the Human empire) is a bit controversial.
Chaos refers to the powers and factions aligned with the Warp. The Warp is inhabited by ethereal entities manifested from the thoughts and emotions of all sapient lifeforms, with most of them being referred to as Daemons and the four most powerful are the de facto rulers of the Warp and are referred to as the Chaos Gods. Chaos also has a significant influence over real space, and can easily corrupt the minds, bodies and souls of mortal beings. As such, the forces of Chaos are usually made up of Daemons crossing between dimensions, Human cultists and even corrupted Space Marines.

A "brief" summary of things. A before you go on there technically are no "good" guys, but there are clear bad guys (chaos).
Space Marines or Astartes: Super human warrior monks that were originally designed by the Emperor of Mankind to be the elite shocktroops/protectors of humanity. Originally organized into 20 legions of varying specialties each with a Primarch (a son of the Emperor, demi-god like figure and general/statesman) that they get their genetic traits from. An event known as the Horus Heresy caused a schism where half the Legions and sons joined with Horus in rebelling against the Emperor after Horus and many others fell to the taint of Chaos (orchestrated by the traitor Erebus of the Word Bearers legion). The loyal legions after the war was broken into chapters of no more than 1000 (some don't follow this rule, but it's rare) marines led by a Chapter Master (or equivalent rank depending on chapter customs/traditions). The chapter is further broken down into companies of 100 and then into squads. It's rare to see more than a squad's worth of Astartes in an engagement and when a conflict calls for more than a companies' strength of Astartes then the situation is really, really fucked up. Their armor makes them basically walking tanks that can run at superhuman speeds and their basic weapon: the bolter fires a 75 caliber round that basically is the equivalent of old fortress guns/anti-material rifles. For a normal human to operate a bolter it would require a team to do so otherwise they'd shatter every bone from the recoil.
Imperium of Mankind: Humanity's government that is led by the Emperor of Mankind (stuck on his golden throne) that encompasses millions of worlds. It's a massive entity and is a shadow of it's former self.
The Inquisition: Humans that are charged with hunting heretics, traitors and other threats to humanity by any means necessary. Inquisitors are generally not liked because they tend to rub others the wrong way (by means of pointless executions and even destroying whole worlds to stop the spread of Chaos). They range in ability from well-trained and well disciplined warriors/investigators to psykers to incompetent and corrupt individuals. They're a mix of the FBI, KGB and Spanish Inquisition in 40k and even have a couple of Space Marine chapters they can call on to handle the worst of situations. Deathwatch is a chapter they use to combat alien threats and the Grey Knights are called when dealing with daemonic threats.
Psykers: beings that can tap into the energies of the Warp that gives them unnatural abilities. They're basically sci-fi wizards/sorcerers or 40k with their abilities depending on how strong their bond is with the Warp and level of training. Abilities range from conjuring fire, firing mind bullets, moving objects, seeing into the future and tapping into the Warp to guide who ships/fleets. Spaceships of the Imperium require Psykers to navigate through the realm known as the Warp otherwise they'd be lost in a realm of un-ending torment and time. Other psykers act as communicators (Astropaths) over the massive distances of the Imperium's territory. Psykers are seen as a good and bad thing in 40k. The Imperium does use psykers on the battlefield and in everyday actions, but they're still a taboo subject. The Space Marines too have psykers known as Librarians that their duties include keeping the chapter's records while aiding their brothers in battle with their abilities. Typically psykers are looked at something to fear since the forces of Chaos uses Warp entities and psykers in horrific ways.
Heretics: A broad term used to describe traitors to the Imperium that shy away from the Emperor of Mankind. Mostly though this is used to describe those that turn to Chaos.
Chaos/The Warp: a realm between realms that once was known as the Realm of Souls. Now after countless millenniums of war and strife (not just human wars) it's become a twisted version of it's former self where horrific daemonic creatures and gods reside. The four gods of chaos live in this realm plotting and planning schemes against one another and the galaxy at large. The traitor and corrupted forces of the fallen Legions reside here as well, escaping the Warp to reap destruction upon the galaxy. Unless properly shielded the realm of the Warp will mutant and corrupt any who stay there long turning people into warp-twisted monsters and mutants or even (if they're "blessed" by a Chaos God) daemon prince.

Why am I always late to the party? XD
Astartes (pronounced As-Star-Tees) was an amazing fan project that use old 40K fans can appreciate, while grabbing the attention of new fans alike.
The Space Marine chapter features is one the animator came up with. This is pretty common in the table-top game too, since there are so many chapters made over the centuries you can basically make your own. Also, the in-universe title for a Space Marine is 'Adeptus Astartes'.
The bad guys in this series are a group of rebels, mostly normal humans who tries to break way from the Imperium of Man. The two guys with mask are psykers, individuals who are able to use psychic powers. The 'spine' thing on the back of their heads is likely a form of 'psychic hood', a device which helps focus and amplify a psyker's powers.
The spheres are an old race of psychic entities called 'Yu'vath'. They were beings that lived partially in the real universe, and partially in an alternate dimension called the 'Warp', that used to enslave planets till the Imperium arose and started to wipe them out. At the end of the series, when the sphere starts to pull the Astartes into itself, it's forceably transporting them into the Warp, which is essentially Hell itself. When they're let go when the Yu'vath is attacked by something in the Warp, they're pushed out of the Warp onto a random unknown planet.

Psykers also aren't their own faction, they get randomly born into the normal populace and are highly valued for their capabilities but also feared because of their volatility (they can go pop and suddenly you have a daemonic incursion if the Psyker is high enough of rank for example).
