Softest body on frame Mercedes in the world ! i love W163 and respect w164
but which one is the best second hand Mercedes ?
I have the 2004 ML2.7. In obsidian black and beige interior. Recently changed all oils and filters.
Car drives like new, still smells like new, and never let me down. Just replaced all brake discs and pads.. gear box smooth as silk.. will never sell it! It has done a 167000 miles. I deleted the swirl flaps by removing them. With no negative problems.
I have a 2002 facelift W163 which is an absolutely superb truck, built like a tank and sooo luxurios inside. I have driven a w164 and i found it disapionting. great review btw 😎

I agree, I have two W163 one ML320 and ML350, it's so reliable and it feels like a truck with more comfort, it can do level 5 off road trails with no issues, it comes with a law gear that is a must for off road. The ML W164 does not and it's no longer a truck, only the W163 has a body on frame.
If you are looking for a fast car that feels like a minivan then get the ML w164, I personaly did not like the W164 after owning the W163 ML's

@snggarageeng I can't testify for that high output motor, it may come with issues, I would research more about the ML550amg.
I don't know how reliable they are, but the ML320 and ML350 V6 is good from 2001 to 2005

Hi, I just bought a 1999 ML 320 Base for $2500 with 69k miles, it's simple and solid and I'm enjoying it very much, I believe that if I take care of it properly it will last a very long time. Ps- I call it an " oldie but goodie" Lol.

Purchased a ML350 2008 for $1,500. Limp mode. Replaced tranny plate, had my vin burned on junkyard parts. Car runs fine!

U r not correct about the engine being bad or the chain. I got one with over 335k miles 55 amg 2000, n it was fine until my friend flipped it. I had one before 2001 also strong. I have one 2000 55 amg n 2003 ml 500 they r great cars. The trrany problem usely conductor plate or valve body, very rare when they go out mechanical unless ppl don't take care of them. My 1998 w163 stays in 2nd gear and jerks bad when in reverse gear, what could it be?
many things , if you get lucky simple oil change will haelp but there is chance that you can damage it if oyu change oil

Just thought I’d update my last comment on my 2004 W163.
It’s now 20 years old. 169.000 miles. Still drives perfect. Great exceleration . Every thing works as it should every button and switch works perfect. Drives without any faults. I guess it could last another10-20 years if I continue to take care of it. Had all the under body rust proofed. Fully serviced with oil change every 6 months…still so comfortable and safe…I have an S320L with every extra it could possibly have, but cannot be compared to my ML which I prefer to drive the most…..

I have a 2001 Ml 320 with 140k miles, i was going to sell it, but I met a guy that had many Ml's ML320, ML350, and the ML500 and he tolld me that his 2000 ML 320 was the one the last the longest with the least problem, he sold it running with 900k miles. I was in shock to hear he put so many miles on the ML 320!

W163 is better at off-road it’s a body on frame, I have W163, I also had W164 and sold it and bought W166 but W163 is for off-roading for me it’s indestructible 💪🏼 Mercedes is the most elegant and rugged for me it’s the looks first

I have a 2000 ML430 and put offrd tyres on it,goes anywhere,not one warning lite or rattle,uses no oil or coolant,trans shifts perfectly,tows bit loads, recently towed a Passat station wagon that had cracked the sump on a car trailer out of a steep rugged road,low range and it pulled up the steepest dirt climb with ease...
I have 2004 ml350. Its my first car, so i cant compare, but i am 100% satisfied

I have a 2003 ml 500 sport its value is increasing twice the aution price forcwhat I paid for it..had ml 320 "99" no problems . A 2001 ml 320 sold it for 4,000 with 180,000 miles on it. The ml 500 sport is a keeper. Want to give it to.my great-geands when there are only electric cars left 😅you can only find 2, 2003 ml sports on the internet for sale in last time i looked. The others 2003 ml 500 sold for $25,000usd in aution

better electronics, car is softer , intrior is way nicer than pre facelift version
I ask because at the end you say your choice is 2002-2003 ml500 w163 facelift, why not 2001 or 2004 w163 facelift included are 2002/3 slightly different?

in the beggining you said w163 is feared and 164 is loved? how its possible i dont know a single person who bought w164 and didnt regret it. All the sam needs changing thats atleast 5k there ,air ride breaks and is very expensive to replace,transmission is weak the om642 used in diesel versions is weak.I know someone who bought an ml350 for 9k and has so far spent an additional 14k just to fix the basic stuff that is commonly broken on w164. In w163 anything that breaks you can replace for dirt cheap. Only weak point is transfer case and thats if you really suck at driving offroad
thats why i said to do proper check before buying
