- Rantis shows off his use of a Brain-Computer Interface to move his ears while in VRChat and get's VR furries wanting a similar setup so they can move their ears and tails in VR.
I have to say, seeing that this was completely mind controlled was absolutely earth shattering for me. I had absolutely NO idea we were this close to having actual Brain to Computer integration for anything in VR, yet here we are with a showcase of someone moving their ears around. Absolutely mind boggling stuff that makes me excited about the future of VR and BCI's! What do you think?

BCI's are AWESOME! What would you do if you had one?
Ears are good
But what about tails?
It would also make it possible to make a proper digital art without the use of ai. Basically make art without the skills or practices.
Also we're probably close to the SAO kind of type of vr headsets.
I would probably train myself like the person in the video. It seems so cool that this type of technology is a thing, and the fact we can use it to give even more expression to ourselves through VR, and more mobility in the real world is amazing to me.
I would definitely be training myself to move my avatar’s tail first, then go to the ears once I have more experience. To be honest, I would probably spend hours each day training myself and trying to get better. I now have this on my list of things to do in the future.
@DBCU1999 I think that's tough considering you have to go through the firewall that protects the device. Since the ai has to like. Figure it out aswell as to how to break through something it doesn't have yet know how to break unless you know how to break said device. You have to be really smart on hacking through the security
@@greyphantom04 I thought so too. Also if you have that headset I feel after some years or by some genius. Make the headset like SAO. Sure there's risks but it's gonna be great to have in mind. Since having technology understand your thoughts is such a interesting topic.
In 2012, I believe, a company in Japan actually made a tail that reacted to your heartbeat and some brain readings. I also believe that someone did the same with ears. And this is outside of VR! This isn't entirely new, but the ability to do it in VR is still amazing.
I haven't seen the tail but I do have a set of ears that react to brain activity. Nothing special just twitches and twists depending on how active your brain is.
Wow
@@talonus202 Yeah it was called "Shippo". I don't know about how it actually worked, but it would wag when you got excited and stuff.
@@talonus202 yeah, I was sad to discover the earclip on mine broke, Even though i never quite got the hang of it beyond sitting perfectly still, it was a very interesting experience.
literally thetailcompany
That moment when you realize your tailbone is still there, with every single muscle and signals to the brain.
This just made me hyper aware of my tailbone and muscles and stuff 😂
i can feel when i try to move it around personally, idk if it actually is but it feels weird
I think you already what I'm boutta do.
Yeah
Now imagine you wear it for too long and phantom limb pain starts occuring when you try taking it off
Sometimes I just kind of
* phantom tail*
Many years ago, I had an idea similar to this that used stick on sensors to puppeteer a fursuit tail. Then my 3d printer broke, I moved house, and the pandemic happened, so it never got out of prototype phase. So cool to see BCI's being integrated into VR. Personally, if I had a BCI, I'd use it to give myself an extra set of arms, both in VRChat, and in real life. I NEVER HAVE ENOUGH HANDS!
Same, I’d also probably use digitigrade legs or a taur body
@@SkullpunkArt Why not both? Sproingy zoomy legs, with extra cargo space!
@@erinfinn2273 hell yea! And maybe a tail maw too, those are pretty cool!
@@SkullpunkArt Hey, I don't judge! Mouth tail is useful, long as it doesn't try and eat me. :)
@@erinfinn2273 nah, I just like the look lol, Also double the mouths, double the cheeseborgers you can eat :3
If we can create prosthetics for apendages that we lost, why not make some for those we want. Mod a human irl with mechanical parts. Imagine how much balance someone growing up from birth with a tail would have during parkour or wire balancing. *now im starting to sound like the average rimworld player*
In this sense we are basically creating protogens, and im all for it
@@TotallyNotNJT imagine someone being able to perfectly multitask with 6 arms while not even thinking about it
Reminds me of that one alien in MIB 2 sorting mail at 200 miles per hour.
@@erinfinn2273 don't know that one, might check it out
Literally every ethics committee in the world:
*Anxious sweating*
the thoughts of actually having the ears maybe react to them in real time is freaking adorable
as gimmicky as it may be, it's actually kind of amazing what people come up with to be closer to their character. kinda want to hear abot more stuff like this now
Love the idea of having a tail that you can actively (or eventually even subconsciously!) wag when excited without even using a controller. Imagine seeing a friend and instantly knowing how happy they are to see you in a way you know must be genuine. Sounds genuinely heavenly :3
i also love the idea!
A project I engaged with that you may find interesting was “body language brain mapping” or “BLBM” and it allows computers to associate your own body language to your emotions and thoughts. What’s cool is that it was scarily accurate, even for 2017 when I was a part of the program I was able to get a computer to predict what I was going to do based on certain physical cues, usually it was how my eyes moved or how my tone of voice changed, it was even able to compensate for intentional changes. The accuracy was around 90-something percent. I hope this technology gets used for good and to make some interesting content
My main wonder is the possibility of phantom limb effect, I still live day to day being able to visualize myself in a place where I am not. This often happens with people who have lost limbs, they feel itching or pain or something where their missing limb is, for me it’s my whole body, but for someone in VR using this on an avatar, they may end up feeling those ears, may not be a bad thing, but it is something to be observed and discussed
Only thing I would add to this is the mu-01 is discontinued and a bit harder to find than the newer mu-02 that I used in the tweet. Charles is using an mu-01 currently because his mu-02 broke after constant use over the course of 2 years. The mu-02 is readily available on muses site and amazon, and its a bit thinner than the mu-01 was.
Ah! I didn't catch that when I was going over the tweets to make sure i had everything! It's still SO COOL to see it in action!
Actually the muse 1 is model mu-02 and the muse 2 is mu-03, thanks for confusing everyone muse XD, any version of the muse headband will work with the software but older ones might not have the heartrate sensor.
Reminds me of the old mindflex game I had when I was younger. There was a ball being held up by a fan that you moved through obstacles and it’s height was controlled by your concentration
i'm actually working with a couple of people in the vrchat biosensing discord to modify the mindflex headband to work with vrchat currently! probably wont be able to do advanced control with it, but we're yet to see :3
The fact this dude can flex non-existent ears by using his mind in a virtual reality space means that my Thoughts of having Spiritual Ears and Tail are real.
When I hear an unexpected noise from behind, it feels like my ears are twitching. But the feeling is a bit off. I feel it a bit higher, where furry ears would be

It is not entirely true, that he teaches himself to move a group of muscles he doesn't have.
Like you said, the ehadband is reading the state of micro muscles on your head.
So what he's actually doing is training himself to deliberatly use these micro muscles in a way a computer can interpret.
it's basically like you have additional buttons on a controller you can press with additonal finger. But these "fingers" are small muscles on your head you normally don't use.
What the heck thats even possible??? Thats rad as heck, wow thats cool! And to even be able to link to VR, thats incredible!
2 things, 1 we are slowly reaching the point where protogens will be real, 2 yeah your new avatar is growing on me and I've only seen it in 2 videos and one picture
I swear I read somewhere online years ago that we made a "mind controlled" 6th finger prosthetic which looked wicked cool in the article but felt impractical to me
I remember that, too, but it was just repurposing the big toe's movements.
Nothing added, just moved, effectively.
*When something sounds straight out of a science fiction movie:*
Every time I hear a vr update it reminds me how close the world is becoming ready player one.
Real
Doc Ock cosplay? Adeptus Mechanicus as well, controlling extra limbs would be wild
Im actually excited bout stuff like this. Being able to make a avatar with moveable ears or tails without having to do handmotions sounds great. Same for wings of a dragon avatar
really excited for BCI technology. setting aside latency issues it'd be a pretty awesome peripheral in VR
I've been to a certain place called the brain museum where they had these BCI's connected to little spider robots, and the robots would move based on how much general brain activity it is reading. e.g. pondering something or daydreaming would make the spider run intensely because of the amount of thought being processed in the mind, while distracting oneself from their thoughts like blinking very fast or staring at one spot without a single thought in the mind would make the spider stop completely because you're not thinking. I'd say it's far from actual mind control so far, but we're slowly getting there !!!
With the astonishing progress of both prosthetics and control mechanisms, I honestly think we're going to see real world body augmentation before I die. I only wonder if we're going to start seeing people augment themselves into IRL furries by that point.
I was looking this up yesterday. great to see it get more attention
Wondering if in the future, people with 4 arms in VRC will actually be fully articulated...
Coolest thing ever would be to see someone casually using all of their arms to gesture and show things while explaining something.
Ngl when I read the title I thought he meant that furries were mind controlling people in vr chat but now I know what he’s actually talking about this makes so much more sense
All I'm sayin is the oasis gets closer every day
Ive seen a thing where like Denmark or something created legs for amputees that they could control with their mind using Bluetooth. Crazy stuff.
Just amazing to know that these people are so astonishingly smart to where they can do this. This is just incredible.
Being someone who is currently in their third year of college for neurophysicist degree this is definitely caught my interest in my start looking into it
The bci used for this was much smaller than I expected. The previous consumer ones I’ve seen before have been much larger and more expensive.
Hopefully the lower cost encourages more people to make stuff with it.
I wouldn't use it as I don't play VR chat, but the tech behind it is still very fascinating. I'm curious what else it could do. I love the idea of controlling robots or programs with a thought.
Honestly if this stuff become possible and later on is able to work for irl ears and tail prosthetics, imagine the amount of people who'd use VR Chat to train the brain to move them, even down to a subconscious level (like some other comment said), in order to have the tails and ears become a living part of your body...
and imagine if the scanners ended up having more diverse designs so that people could choose one to fit their personality and looks?
I would 100% splurge to get me my own functioning ears and tail cause itd be pretty damn cool
And like a different comment said, imagine also getting multiple arms? It would provide much more workplace functionality and just overall quality of life for those who get the extra limbs
A great thought, power armor that responds as fast as you do, you get the halo armor without the bone snapping results lol
We can have flight like from SAO when they're in Alfheim, they have controler flight, but it you imagine using the muscles in your back to control your wings you can fly better.
the fact that BCI's are being developed more just for vrchat, (and later possibly are going to be used for other purposes of course)
muscles groups are not non existent, just not used often by the body, so you have to adapt to using them
Phantom sense is about to go *crazy!*
I think when most people think of brain-computer interfaces they think of stuff like The Matrix, where you have to have machinery and ports embedded into your brain or spine, which is some scary stuff, so it's comforting to see it not be that, if that makes sense. It's nice to see us doing cool things with technology that don't require splicing it into ourselves.
And given the small form factor of the headband being used I think we'll see at least one headset incorporate something similar as a selling point, like the Vive Pro Eye did. And if that's the case maybe we'll see more nuanced facial animation support show up in more games as a result. I'm really excited to see where this goes.
That's actually really intresting and great idea to put into my head for solving this problem I was running into with an avatar I'm recreating from a game.
The avatar has a backpack that has an extra set of arms and hands that move independently of the actual arms.... kinda doc-ock style but not for movement purposes.
The problem is as of now there's not really a good way to control them without doing one or a mix of 3 things.
1) bind them to my actual arms and move them puppet style
2) give them physbones to move and be posed
3) make seperated animations and assign them to gestures and/or an animation group toggle
But with this idea I could potentially move them with my thoughts and (albeit not as complex and effective as actual arm movement)
This could be also helped with doing something like Cosears does and use motion (in this case head movement) to emulate mood
can't wait till it gets to the point where you can move your character without controllers or even moving in real life.
it would be pretty cool to control huds in vr or to activate things in tactical shooters like IR or to mark an enemy on a map like spotting in battlefield
0:13 yes, ive used internet before.
i can imagine we'd get VR gear where we would just need to put on a helmet and we'd personally get into said VR game but we'd have to be in a state where our body is sleeping but our mind is active so we wouldn't do what we'd do in the VR game which could take some time to learn todo to just start sleeping on command to be transported into a virtual world
SAO... you're thinking of the SAO Nerve Gear
is it called that? well hopefully one day in our lifetimes it becomes reality and as inexpensive as possible with loads of games too
Damn, furries are now tricking their brain into thinking they have functionnal furry ears, that's crazy!
this is super neat. ive been watching BCI tech for vr for a while now and its neat to see more hobbyists trying it out.
i wonder what type of CVR mods could be made to use this tech
Sometimes I picture myself flicking my tail around, or lowering my ears depending on what I am experiencing. This is so crazy bro.
one step closer to makeing clark's armored hardsuit for further space travel
Phantom sense is rather strong for me, even with non-human parts like the ears and tail. I'd totally want to try it out to see if it'd make the phantom sense stronger because it's matching what I'm thinking or weaker because it doesn't match up well enough.
I've been so excited about this stuff over the years. I used to see people trying to control stuff with their mind at first, and it just flails about, but now there are some videos that you can see where there is some pretty smooth movement. I just can't wait to see that become more normal, and not stuff stuck in research labs. This is a huge step though!
damn that's awesome makes me think how much longer until we get full dive VR like they have in anime
Right?? Like in Shangri La Frontier for example
next video: furries are blowing up people’s pancakes with their minds
This is crazy! This brings the possibilities of VR to whole new heights!
I would absolutely love to have something like this for ears, tails etc so I'm excited to see where this goes!
I really want to see what one of these would do for a furry that claims Phantom Sense in VR with their ears or tail, since that is essentially them saying there is mental stimuli they experience/associate with limbs they do not have.
That face at the end caught me off-guard and made me laugh.
The only sad thing about the BCI is that it only has four contact points… in theory you could create a stable gyro that moves a hand in four directions, but because we live in 3D, we have six directions to worry about… Very interesting to look out for, as I know exactly where my paychecks will be going once those are available
Great reporting and explanation! As a freak that figured out how to move my own ear muscles, I wonder if that device picks those ones up.
BCI is soo cool. By the looks in this video, we can do almost anything if we put our minds to it.
I think it's astounding!
Now I actually think I'll be able to have a tail and four arms in the future!
Reminds me of the "blows up pancakes with mind" meme. However, this is so cool! :D
Ready Player Two bout to happen irl and I am both excited and nervous for the future of humanity
That headband reminds me of Big Hero 6
we have taken over vrchat
Yay furries take over vrchat

Okay, I imagined a very different kind of mind control when I read the title
I’m picturing a ballet in the future.. even the dancers have trained to work their AR appendages (WINGS) while they dance.
Not much longer until we start uploading our consciousnesses to the cloud and live on forever
this is awesome but that last sentence is perfect 😆
Thankfully so many furries work in the medical field that this reasonably foreshadows prosthetics getting a lot better in the comming decades.
this tech is amazing and yep I'm planning to get a BCI when I'm able to
you know how amputees, or people missing limbs in general, have something called "phantom pain" or "phantom limbs"? well, yeah, we gonna have that with limbs that don't even exist... and i'm here for it
I actually knew it was a matter of time before someone did this, but if no one did i would have done it myself
I wonder how long it will take for some furry engineers and programmers to team up and make prosthetic ears and tails that would use BCI's
this is effectively the early stages of what Doc Ock was doing
We are one step closer to full dive gaming
So many people are gonna use that in the Murder game on VRC and make it look like they're using their Grab / grip thing when they aren't.
Ooooooooo that’s so cool dude! I’m gonna see if I can get one of those, that’s gonna be so cool!
This is great info, glad to know this is now public!
Honestly i wonder just how far this can be pushed. How many non-existent VR parts and pieces can end up being moved via BCI at the same time?
The absolute mental training required for just ears or a tail seems difficult enough, but I'd love to see someone try and push it to its absolute limits. Ears, a tail, an extra pair of arms, both of those new hands, etc etc
We’re getting closer to Ready Player One and I’m loving it
I can’t wait to see mind controlled tails
We are growing closer to having the bionic arm from Metal Gear Solid V: TPP in real life, this is good
I completely misunderstood the title on my first read until I watched the actual video xD
I swear to god if I lose a limb and I get my prosthetic from a furry, I’m going to lose it because I could probably be classified as a protogen by them
it sounds pretty cool and very interesting because the number of hardware devices that people are making and adding in VRchat would basically just be ready for player one and we got this before GTA 6 that's crazy but cool
ONE SMALL STEP FOR VR, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR SAO
Still crazy how advanced furry models are in vr. They are always some of the most detailed and alive looking models
I love this, I’m excited to hopefully use this in the future
I'm about to become doctor octopus with this kinda tech.
Furries are either the most down to earth people, or could be the hugest preds you've seen.
this would be AMAZEING for spellcasting in videogames!
Am flabbergasted and hyped this gets better soo you don't need to really focus to move
i doubt it would be convenient but i think it would be really cool if you controlled movement in vr with something like a BCI, i think this my be one path vr may go down before an actual omnidirectional treadmill is made.
wtf, as soon as I saw the headband I was like "IS THAT BIG HERO 6 ALL OVER AGAIN????"
I am looking forward to the development of the technology.😸
Some movies i know and believe to used something similar to BCI is ( Matrix, Robocop, and basically more movies i forgot the name)
Its so cool to see what ppl can do
I've stolen that BCI thingie many times in Payday 2! Honestly never saw this coming, either.
