    just wanted to share my method to extract the meat:
    1) one of 3 eyes on the coconut is always softer, i drill a hole in it with screwdriver and get the coconut water out, which i can drink or use for other stuff.
    2) i wrap the coconut in a plastic back and i bash it with a hammer. This way it's really easy to separate the meat from the shell, using a small knife and prying the meat out. WAY faster than grating the stuff.
    3) i place the pieces in a high powered blender (Vitamix, Blendtec etc.) with a little bit of water and grind the meat.
    Then the rest of the procedure i follow is pretty similar than the one in this video, i jsut wanted to hear your opinion about getting the meat out using my method, i think it's way quicker.

      I hail from Kerala, a state in India. We use coconut products abundantly. The method used by John is precisely our method, except that he is not an expert. In Kerala, you see people cracking open the coconut in less than two whacks. The coconuts are grated quickly. John is using the conventional grater. Nowadays, you have graters that can be fixed onto the edge of a table, to make it easier. Try watching 'How to Open a Coconut, Indian Style' on you tube.

    It's always good to know how things are made, for the sake of science, even if you decide it's easier to buy it from now on, I commend your efforts. I do the same thing all the time, I raised chickens, we grow all kinds of vegetables, for fun, I make bread (and it is the best bread I've ever had), made pasta, made hard cider, ginger beer, regular beer, keep bees for fun, made candles...it's great to do all of that stuff!

    hi bro, i am from Malaysia, you are doing the regular hot process oil, leave the milk for 24 hours and not in the fridge, and you should have 3 lairs. cream on the top, can be used as butter, and the virgin oil and lastly the water, you waist a lot of milk in this way, you can blend it hard with the water before you leave it for 24 hours. and good luck :)

    I use a hammer to break open the coconut into little pieces. I don't smash it at once, but tap it just like you do with the cleaver. I once was able to remove the entire coconut meat while still intact (looked like a brown leather ball), using this method. Some coconut flesh pieces just come out whole from the shell, others need to be pried out. Takes me about 4 minutes to completely get the meat out of one coconut. Then I blend and strain pretty much as described in this video. I think blending yields more milk.

    You can crack open a coconut easy and fast by hitting it with the dull side of a cleaver or machete across the line that runs between the "eyes" of the shell.

    John, thanks so much for your video! I gave it a go but since I couldn't find a coconut shredded like yours, I pretty much got the pulp out of the shell and shredded it in a food processor, I left the milk in the fridge but there is hardly any cream floating on the water. Did I do something wrong? Any ideas? Thank you sooo much!

    • @jwwm2
      @jwwm2  11 років тому

      I don't know. Some coconuts will have more cream, and some less. I made my first batch by doing what you did, except I used a blender. I mixed water with the processed coconut meat in the blender, so it's hard for me to say why yours didn't work. It also depends on how many coconuts you use, and how much water. Also, I've seen shredders like the one I have for sale on Amazon.

      It would be good if people everywhere could easily make their own cooking oil. In colder climates it isn't easy to find things that everyday people can use to make their own oil. I think that's one reason people used to use lard.

    I've been using this on my hair as a mask and it has made my hair look and feel great. I suffer from dry scalp and after I dry my hair, I always get peeling skin right at my hairline, at the top of my forehead.
    It's so incredibly annoying. I dab just a little bit of Merit VCO virgin coconut oil on the
    flaky spots and they behave all day. I am going to give some of this to my
    sister to use on my niece's eczema since I have heard it works wonders there
    too.
    Just for fun I rubbed this on my arms and elbows and it worked as a great
    moisturizer with a little sheen, I can see myself using this on my legs
    during the summer!

    Excellent video! I'm an American who's been living in Cebu Philippines for 15 years. My wife's family has property in the southern part of the island. Last weekend we harvested all the coconuts and processed them into copra which we later sold. Using a process similar to yours we were able to get just over 1 liter of oil from 10 coconuts. This is the best oil ever! By the way the cloth you used is called a muslin cloth (just a cotton cloth like a big handkerchief). I like your use of the squeezed meat for coconut flour, don't see people doing that here. Question: What do you do with the leftover solid parts left in the pan? They're quite tasty and can be mixed with peanut butter or just eaten alone as a snack. Do you do anything with them or just throw them out? You got my sub :)

    Although the yield is good for keeping the skin supple and minimizing white hair, it was simply coconut oil, not the virgin one. If that product was baked, there won’t be a difference from the cooking coconut oil, a clearer one and what we normally use for frying.

    It is easier to freeze a coconut for about 12 hrs and then hit the equator line around coconut. Shell will come off easier and hardly any bark on the meat. If no equator line, hit around the coconut and shell will still break better. Empty coconut water before freezing it. You can bake it at 200-300 degrees in oven and break it open.

    • @jwwm2
      @jwwm2  9 років тому

      geo80551 Sounds a tad complicated, but I guess it'd work.I think the coconut grater is the better way to do things.

    • @geo80551
      @geo80551 9 років тому

      Yes, there are many ways. But you don't get as much brown bark after the freezing. Just make sure water is out of coconut and don't freeze over 12 hrs. I was striving for less bark. There is a you tube video on freezing them and baking them. it would be easier to grate coconut after because of less bark. Or you can just buy unsweetened coconut at a store, online also.

But when I bought coconut oil in the cooking oil isle that one had no scent, just like mine I made at home. Both say they just include coconut oil. • @jwwm2
      @jwwm2  10 років тому

      GlassLegend40 The amount of coconut milk to oil just depends. Better to figure that about 6 coconut equals about 1 cup of oil. It might be more, and it could be less, but it's a place to start.

    It's virgin coconut oil because it's organic. It isn't cold pressed oil, but this is the traditional way virgin coconut oil is produced around the world in people's homes.

    What I showed here is just one way to make the oil. There's also a "cold pressed" way to make it, but it's best to have a lot more of the milk, and a lot more time.
    Wow! I'm pleased I was able to inspire you. Thanks for your kind words.

    What about to use the juice extractor machine. I get carrot juice and a dry dust of carrot separated with this machine and is faster. Coconut and carrot have approximately the same texture.

    • @jwwm2

      I think there are videos of people using an extractor to make coconut oil. The method I show is very old, and traditional.

    you could have got way more oil(like 3x or 4x) if you had left the coconut milk over night...you could get most of its cream that way...

    • @jwwm2
      @jwwm2  10 років тому

      You're correct that I could have gotten more oil if I'd let the milk cool longer. I was in a hurry to finish the video, though.

    is the oil obtain from this method still considered virgin coconut oil? because a lot of people said by using this heating method it kills the natural benefits n nutrients from the VCO. i'm just curious whether that is not the case. thanks

    • @jwwm2
      @jwwm2  8 років тому

      A lot of people are wrong. VCO is made from fresh coconuts. That's what makes it Virgin Coconut Oil. The oil I show in my video also has more health benefits than cold processed coconut oil. There's nothing wrong with cold press methods of making coconut oil, but the oil produced will be inferior.

    hi to extract oil dry the coconut in the hot sun with hard shell broken in to two half's for at least nine days.
    the hardshell separates from the pulp by now it is crunchy.
    aroma and touch of oil felt in the pulp. this pulp is squeezed in the metallic mill extract is collected and sundries for a day to preserve for at least six months without any preservative.
    it is healthy cooling rich for hair body massage and excellent for tasty cooking.

    I"m confused which is which. Hi process is different from other video that I watched. In his case, he tried to boiled it before he can produce the oil. The other video after refrigerating overnight, just separate the oil and wax.
    This oil is colored brown while the other one and usually sold at store is just dirty white.
