    I'm surprised to see them landing that close to the edge of the deck unless there's a clear operational benefit for doing so. Aside from tangling a wheel on the railing or getting one over the edge, I imagine the lift from the two rotors will not be the same because on one side the downwash is bouncing back off the deck, and on the other it's just going down the side of the ship. Or maybe that's why they're practicing, duh.

    • @kylecoughlan8610
      @kylecoughlan8610 4 роки тому

      I was thinking that. I'm no expert but...I reckon they practice that because on the amphibious assault ships they would want to land as far away from the tower as possible so they practice close to the edge of the flight deck even tho they don't need to on this ship

      Dan Patterson every aircraft on navy ships land in specific spots, and the traffic control man have to be precise with every move they make

    • @andyowens5494
      @andyowens5494 4 роки тому +1

      That ship had acres of space: most assault ships have much less space and they land side by side - so they gotta be able to land within a couple of feet (few inches is normal) of the marked spot. Its like parallel parking a car - you might as well learn to park close to the kerb, cos its better than the alternative.

    Can the Osprey land by arrester wire?

    • @Skyprince27
      @Skyprince27 4 роки тому +3

      @G8M8N8
      You can’t land the Osprey horizontally. The blades would hit the ship/ground. Arrestor wire inapplicable.

    • @robertwillis4061
      @robertwillis4061 4 роки тому

      Wonder if they could do an arrester wire landing with the propeller's at 45deg. Would mean they could land in stormy seas, on a ship that is rolling heavily

    • @andyowens5494
      @andyowens5494 4 роки тому

      Robert Willis An arrester wouldn’t control that; better to just practice heavy seas landing and do it without having anything to snag on (in case of a quick get away to avoid slamming the rotors into any kind of structure).

    Ospry is a badass transport airocopter! Seems like it would be used more across all branches. Marines were smart buying these. Unlike the navy's consistent delayed and over budgeted new class of subs , the $25 bill for just 3 Nimitz that are expensive floating weapon system research labs.or the counties issues they've had with the ford class carrier.

    Anyone has any idea why they dont use chinooks instead? And how this is better? I mean i love it for its aesthetics it looks like something from avatar or halo. but for carriers wouldnt it be more practical to use something that doesnt have wings like a chinook?

      The Osprey's main advantage is the ability to get to APLN mode and traverse much farther distances then any helicopter can. Operating from a ship is just part of Naval Aviation. The V-22 is a comprise, it's not a great helicopter and it's not a great airplane, but it can do the job of both. We don't design an aircraft to be great at landing on a ship. We design with a particular goal in mind and then make the shipboard operations work.

      Norman McKinnon There WERE problems in the early days of the programme, but they made the investment and have been rewarded with a versatile platform. Time will tell whether its got the lifespan, but I assume they enginurded the hell out of it; I cant imagine the torque going through the turbine shafts to shift that rotor.
