All of the robots that seemed to be thinking were actually discovered to have just been programmed to do whatever they were doing. The core of the story is that technology can not hurt us with its own intention and must be used by other humans to do so. This movie was about the exact opposite idea

The robots in the world are programed with the "laws of robotics" (which are fictional despite many thinking they're real), which disallows a robot to hurt human beings. You wouldn't actually have to program this in, though. However if you did, they literally cannot disobey regardless of it they want to
