  • TITLE: LIVESTOCK BARN TOUR - LaLa Farm's Goat and Chicken Barn. One of the first buildings we built on the LaLa Farm homestead was the livestock barn. Our barn shelters our Kiko meat goat herd and and most of our laying hens. In Florida, we needed an open air barn to ensure proper ventilation due to high heat and humidity for most of the year. This barn perfectly meets the needs of our livestock and our family both both a shelter and a work area to tend to the animals on our homestead. If you like the video, please give it a thumbs up, subscribe, and mash the notification bell to make sure you receive updates in the future as new videos are released from LaLa Farm.
The LaLa Farm channel is an informational and educational - how to - DIY - channel that follows the day to day activities happening around LaLa Farm. LaLa Farm is a small, family owned farm located just south of the Florida - Georgia line in Glen Saint Mary, FL (Northeast Florida). We focus on producing small scale marketable farm products, while moving toward food self-sufficiency for our own family. We breed Registered Kiko, Boer, and Nubian goats for market and meat. We raise our own poultry for meat and eggs. We grow seasonal fruits and vegetables and maintain a colony of bees for honey and pollination of our plants. The goal of our UA-cam channel is to educate and share with our customers, followers, and anyone else interested in the homesteading or small farm lifestyle - our approach to managing the little slice of paradise we call LaLa Farm. Our channel, just like the farm, is truly a family endeavor. On any given week, you may see videos from any number of our family members depending upon the topic being discussed. Each of our family members has unique interests and skills that they bring to our farm. We would love to have you join us - the Robinson family - on our self-sufficiency and homesteading journey by subscribing to our channel.

    OUR JOURNEY TO THE HOMESTEAD:
LaLa and I (Rick) grew up in a small agricultural region of New York State. LaLa was raised in a dairy farming family and I grew up in a small town. LaLa and I were high school sweethearts, who married in our late teens - and have now been married for over 30 years. We moved to Jacksonville, FL in the mid 1980’s, after being stationed there while serving in the U.S. Navy as an Interior Communications Electrician (I fixed phones). The plan was for LaLa to be a stay at home mom. In the early 90’s I was injured while serving on active duty and I was abruptly discharged from military service. By this time, we had two young children, and it never seemed like there was enough time in the day. LaLa went to work - I went to college - and we somehow found enough time for each other and our family. We always dreamed of having a small farm to raise our kids and our own food. For nearly 20 years, we lived in the city and watched as the city encroached in upon us and grew up around us. In the early 2000’s we moved from Jacksonville, FL to an adjacent and more rural area of Baker County, FL. We eventually found the perfect piece of land to realize our dream of owning our own farm, and in 2015, this dream became a reality - a reality that is today - The LaLa Farm.

Thanks a ton!! My whole family tells me I overbuild everything. The barn is often their prime example of this. I on the other hand - research everything - design it on paper - then try to build something that is functional and built to last. The barn is super flexible in terms of how we configure it for what we are doing during a particular time of the year. Right now, it is pretty wide open like in the thumbnail so my granddaughter can work with her goats for our annual county fair. Come winter, it will be filled with hay. I overbuild everything! We do get high winds, but the biggest issue I was anticipating was a 180 pound goat headbutting the walls. The have broken 3 welded gates - one of which was bent in half. The walls however have not budged. For about 5 months - you could not find a 5" anywhere in town or at the closes Home Depot. 😁 We bought the land 5 years ago, and it been a series of projects ever since. We moved onto the property 3 years ago. This winters projects are to build 10 more raised beds; finished my covered garden work space; and build a 3rd chicken coop for breeding pairs; and of course - some goat cross fencing. All of these projects are impractical during the heat of the summer - its just too darn hot. Thanks for watching Roland. - Rick

Am I the only one that has goats that eat wood because mine gnaw on any wood they can get to. It appears you have the wood on the outside of the panels and fencing so they can't get to it. @@catherinegrace6406 Yes - I meant under the hay bales. Sorry. Hay that is stacked directly on concrete will tend to pull moisture into the bale from the concrete. So when this video was done, we used horse pads under the hay stack. We have since found some plastic pallets that we stack the hay on now - which is far better. The plastic pallet is completely inert, really sturdy, and does not interact with the hay in any way. The pallet also allows for airflow beneath the hay bales which helps to keep them dry. - Rick
