Great guide. We (on a very last minute whim) left Salzburg early in the morning on Bus 150 to Bad Ischl. Then took the train - which like you say - puts you on the wrong side of the lake. HOWEVER - seeing Hallstatt from the ferry for the first time is MAGICAL. So magical that I would recommend the ferry over taking the bus. It also drops you in the center of town and there is a discount on a round trip ferry ticket. We dined at the restaurant shown at 6:52. Magical. Words cannot describe the beauty of this town. It must be seen in person. (Did I mention it was magical?) This is a very helpful guide and would have come in handy. But I will say that the trip is relatively intuitive. Also - take the time to stop and have a walk through Bad Ischl. It's a charming little town.

@@Bigboytravel I see, then I might stay the night in Salzburg, as for the Hallstatt day trip , will it be tight to include 5 fingers in the day trip itinerary? Targeting to travel via bus and train back to Salzburg in the evening before sunsets
You can definitely do the 5 fingers, especially if arriving by bus as you end up riding through town all the way to the Dachstein Visitors center where you take the cable car up two levels plus a 30 minute walk to the 5 fingers. Many people do this even if they aren't doing the ice cave tour and then ride the bus back down after to the hallstatt lahn bus stop on the south end of the village near the salt mine visitor center

My co-traveler is an Austrian who has never been........and no one local will go with her! Blessings!
Hello dude!, I follow this video step by step and it is very help full, I just went to Hallstat about two weeks ago and the way is almost the same, just at the return in the Attnangt Putchheim the line I took was the 3 platform. And the ferry to the train station depart at the back of the Town Church. Thank you very much and I recommend this place as one of the most beautiful places un Austria.
glad you found your train with no issues, i've only had the platform be different once since they redid the station which was due to line construction. Your comment is a helpful reminder that visitors should always check both their ticket but also the departure boards at each station for any changes. Yep the ferry dock behind the lower Town Church (aka the Protestant Church) to the train station via the Stephanie Ferry is Hallstatt Markt which I show and mention in this video. It can be confusing as there is Hallstatt Markt (ferry dock) and the Marktplatz which is the main square.
While the cable car does have quite a climb up, I would agree that the stroll to the Ice Cave is more of a nice 15-20 minute uphill walk than a climb, but we have seen some people that try to rush have to take breaks halfway up. Definitely the more time you spend in Austria the hike seems almost like a hill than a mountain.
Excellent, liked and subscribed your channel, very helpful information you shared. I am planning to visit first week of July, I will be in Vienna last week of June. Cheers. 👍
For thr 1st week of July it is going to be pretty tight and possibly booked up. Our number one is hotel GrunerBaum and the number two is thr Krippenstein Lodge but there are 10-12 really enjoyable places. Go to booking.com right away to check if anything is free
@@Bigboytravel what is the best way by public transport to reach from Madlhof Himmelreich to Hallstatt ? I booked in Madlhof apartments until 4th July today to cover attractions in Salzburg. Any idea how far to visit attractions in Salzburg from Himmelreich. From Vienna I will checkout on 1st July from Zoku hotel and then proceed to Madlhof , I am planning to visit on 4th July to Hallstatt from this area. Next I will book for Hallstatt on 4th July. Appreciate your answers. Cheers 👍
Is that the Madlhof by the Salzburg Airport? If so both bus 10 and bus 180 have stops close by and are 10 minutes to the heart of old town otherwise it is a 1 hour walk or 10 minute cab. Luckily Google maps in integrated well with the buses in Salzburg
Thank you for subscribing, I wont have new videos covering Vienna until later this year so let me know if you have questions, there is also a large Vienna section on our website
Great guide. Very informative and just the right amount of detail! I hope to make that trip in December. Any changes in recommendation then? Are the salt mines and the ice caves open then?
thanks for watching! I assume you are planning on going this December 2024? While the Ice Cave will be closed, the Salt Mine and lift up to the Sky Walk will be open every day of December. The Salt Mine only closes for around a month from mid-Jan to mid-Feb each year but is otherwise open basically every day there is a slim chance that weather could alter the bus schedule, but heavy snow isn't common at the village level in December. We always recommend double checking the current schedule closer to your visit dates at www.oebb.at/en
Bus 150 now leaves on stall F from Salzburg in front of the train station. Once you get to Bad Ischl another bus that goes to Gosausee is Bus 541 that still stops at Gosaumühle for a transfer to Bus 543 to Hallstatt.
Thanks for watching, that is exactly what my video and online guide say. This route has basically been unchanged in over 10 years now and I'll be taking it again next week.
@@Bigboytravel That's not what your video says. It says to board bus 542. Your information is outdated. I traveled today from bus 541 like this guy said. Also coming back from five fingers is from bus 544 not 543 like your video says. Please change this information. Also trains are running late nowadays from Hallstat, mine was delayed by 30 mins! I missed my connecting train from Attang Puchheim. I asked the ticket checker and he told me these delays are normal now. It's better to return to Salzburg via the bus. Train route is really miserable and unpredictable.
Hey Edwin, I was also just there 3 weeks ago. There are some temporary changes at the moment due to the flooding requiring retooling of the train lines between Linz and Vienna. I will be monitoring it and updating the online guide by this Spring if any of the alternations stay in place
Most efficient travel video for Hallstatt/ Salzburg I came across!! So in detailed. Thank you so very much. I will be traveling from Salzburg to Hallstate in September coming from Canada, my hotel is in Bad Goisern. Does the bus pass this area before Hallstatt? Thanks in advance.
Nice! I'lll be there in September also! Yes the bus stops in Bad Gosiern with a stop right in the middle of town along the river. The stopnis simply "bad gosiern"
Excellent video. This is very helpful for the travelers who are travelling for the first time. I've checked your website as well. It also have very helpful information. I have just one question. I found the timetables of busses in your website. Could you please confirm if those are latest timetables? If not, where can I get the latest timetable of 150, 152 & 153 busses so that I can plan my activities accordingly.
the timetables come out every 6-12 months. I spot check them 2-3 times a year even in between my visits and they are still current. There can be temporarly changes which are usually posted in paper at the bus stop and the transportation website. The best rule of thumb is always to double check the most up-to-date schdule for the days of your visit at www.oebb.at/en
Please kindly let me know the exact name of the Hallstatt Train Station where we will board the train from across the Lake because when I tried to buy a ticket on linefrom OBB, the system wanted me to choose which station ( Hallstatt Bahnhst; Hallstatt Gosaumhle; Hallstatt Lahn; Hallstatt Nord; or Hallstatt only). Looking forward to your response. Thank you.
The one you need is the Hallstatt Bahn which is across the lake from the town. Lahn is the bus stop in town and gosaumuhle is far north of town. Please us www.oebb.at/en to book which is the offical website and has a map view of the journey
We have always bought them from thr driver but you can definitely buy either from thr www.oebb.at/en website or the ticket machines ahead of time. If you buy ahead of time make sure to put in Hallstatt Lahn as the destination to force the bus option as the preferred. Since you'll probably want the earlier bus instead of just winging it it can make sense to buy ahead (especially with a group) but isn't required nornally
That can be tricky as there arent many options and it fills up fast. There are 3 great hotels (Gasthofs) on our free walking tour guide near market square that are wonderful and Grüner Baum is out favorite. www.bigboytravel.com/europe/austria/hallstatt/freewalkingtour/ The Krippenstein Alpine Lodge up Dachstein Mountain near the hallstatt ice cave and 5 fingers is also amazing to stay at.
If we are going from Hallstatt to Brataslava would you go to Vienna and then over to Brataslava or do they have trains going directly to Brataslava? We are staying there for 3 days and will be spending one day in Vienna so it will not be important to see this on the way. Thank you
Hey Tanner, yes you'll transfer to go west-east in Attnang-Puchheim and will have to transfer again in Vienna to Bratislava. In most cases you just have the one transfer at Wien HBF but check on www.oebb.at/en for the options on the day you need. It is a staggering 5-6 hours usually
Hello there! Amazing and informative video. I am travelling to Hallstatt for an overnight stay. Will be leaving from Salzburg around 7am. Do you think it’s possible to experience both salt mine+ skywalk in the morning, and the ice cave+ five fingers in the afternoon?
Nornally to fit in both you have to arrive at the Ice Cave as your first thing and then work back to the salt mine/village. That would be difficult to do in reverse order as the last ice cave tour is currenrly at 330pm with the last cable car down is at 510pm. It would be cutting it close for both and you wouldn't want to miss either. Tours end at the cave for the season on November 5th this year. Since you mentioned you are staying overnight, I assume you have larger luggage. If that is the case I would drop it off at your hotel, have a coffe/snack, and then either bus up to the dachstein ice cave cable car lift or have the hotel help you get a cab. This will give you time to do the ice cave tour mid morning plus go up one more level on the cable car to eat at Krippenstein Lodge and hike to the 5 fingers. You'll then have a couple hours back in the village to explore before dinner. I'd do the salt mine tour and skywalk the next morning on the first tour (book ahead) leaving your bags at the hotel. After the tour and lunch then continue onto your next destination. If you try to pack it all into 8 hours and rush out the next morning it won't be as enjoyable so try to make it a 1.5 day total visit since you have the advantage of staying overnight
Thank you for the video. I am planning to go there next week. I have a question. I start from Salzburg and buy a one day ticket from the bus 150 driver, when i arrive 'Bad Ischl', if i want to take the train to Hallstatt instead of Bus 542, do i need to buy another ticket or the one day ticket included that? Thank you very much
The train is a separate ticket which you can buy at the machine or the Oebb.at website/app. The ferry ride from the train station to the village is also separate and paid with cash. Was just there two weeks ago again and did the train, bus, and ferry all during my time. Great time of year to visit
Beautiful ❤ Is the $15 Euro bus fare all the way to Hallstate from Sulzburg even with bus changes? And The Salzburg bus station that you mentioned same as Salzburg HBF? Thanks in advance.
Yes the ticket is based on continous ride (even with transfers) in the zone. So you can ride all the way to Hallstatt Lahn or the Ice Cave visitors center without paying for an extra ticket. And yes, Salzburg HBF
Yes, just follow this guide in reverse starting from thr Hallstatt Lahn bus stop all the way to Salzburg. Current timetables for your specific days are available on the official Austrian website www.oebb.at/en.
you will follow the route in reverse using the same exact buses or can ferry across the lake and trake the train with one connection. I have a guide with interactive map on my website here www.bigboytravel.com/europe/austria/hallstatt/gettingtohallstatt/
quick questions: my friend and I want to stay a day or two in Hallstatt to truly appreciate it and then go onto Vienna. Will the hallstatt bus have enough room for a full suitcase? And does anyone know a good way to get to Vienna from Hallstatt? Thank you!
With large suitcases, you will want to use the train option with the ferry into town. You'll also use the train to Vienna. Look up the schedules for your days and book at www.oebb.at/en
Nice information, planning a trip after covid problem, but travel blogs do not mention month of travelling. It is important as like to see a bit snow on mountains also. Is end april fine and less crowded?
Hey Liam, it should be just a few minutes past 6pm from Hallstatt Lahn. You can peek at thr schedule on the official Asutrian website www.oebb.at/en now and then make sure to check again during your visit. March is usually very pleasant however there is always a slight chance of snow/ice altering the bus schedule. Expect it to feel firmly like spring time at the lake/village level
Also, I saw on OBB there is a day ticket for 31.8 euro which if I understand correctly....I can take any bus or train anytime of the day, isn't that correct? I want to buy for 6 of us on my app, is that ok? cuz some are elderly 70 yr olds who doesn't use the app on phone
They are two separate tickets if you bought them as a single journey I believe unless you pay for a MyRegio regional pass which would cover all modes in one ticket. That is from the official www.oebb.at/en site
Great video! Just to clarify, can you take the same buses back to return to Salzburg in order of return? E.g. taking the Bus 543 to Gosaumuhle- and then from there to take the 542 bus to Bad Ischl, and from there to take the 150 bus towards Salzburg? This is because I worry I will not make it in time to get the last ferry at 6:15PM to get to Hallstat train station and surely the buses will remain active longer into the night no? Thank you!
Yes you can return the exact same way. Most of the year the last bus is around the same time as the last ferry/train. While we perfer to stay overnight, when we day trip to hallstatt we like to bus in a ferry/train out since it saves us the 10-15 minutes of walking back from the heart of town down to the lahn bus stop if we are eatting dinner. Check the www.oebb.at/en website for the schedule on your day and put Hallstatt Lahn in as the destination/departure for the bus option
@@Bigboytravel Thank you! Do you know how far the main bus station (for the 150 bus) is from MEININGER Hotel Salzburg City Centre? I think its the 26minute walk...
Yes around a 25 minute walk but there is a bus stop across the street and just past the stop light to the north for Bus #2 which runs every 15 minutes and is only a 10 minute ride. If you are taking the Super early bus #150 then you should maybe consider walking instead. A cool thing is that you can pop over the evening before and see the current bus schedule on the bus stop sign

@@Bigboytravel just curious during peak season are lockers in attnang puchheim stn usually full? How are the tickets usually purchased? Is it via the machine at the station? and if I were to take a train n then transfer to bus in bad ischl I will have to pay for the bus ticket to the driver?
wow, amazing video! super informative and just saved me a ton of headache research on figuring out how to get to hallstatt. Thank you!!
Yes!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful and fully informed video!
I surfed around all the Internet, and never found this clear! Thanks again!
Amazing information. Thank you! Will look forward to watching your other videos. ❤
Thank you!
this is a very comprehensive guide, thank you very much!
Wow what a beautiful explanation... Thank you surely i would love to visit this place from your guidance.
Exactly what I needed! Thanks so much! Ed have a few nights in Hallstatt in May. 🥰
Great to hear, I have another new Hallstatt video coming out in a few hours covering the top ten things to do in the village
@@Bigboytravel Great! Looking forward toit! I have been watching all of your videos about the area. I was hoping that you had a Salzburg video (in addition to the awesome Sound of Music meadow)......but I found your website and I think that I will just do your walking tour. Thanks for sharing your experience. We feel good about our plans to Hallstatt.....many thanks to your website and videos. Loved the salt mine video. We cannot wait to go!
I absolutely love your videos. easy to follow directions is just... outstanding!!! thank you for taking the time to do this its a gem!
No problem, we love going to Hallstatt and are glad this video has been making it easier for people
Thank you so much! Big boy travel very helpful. Great guide👍
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching and enjoy your visit to hallstatt
Best travel video is ever made
Excellent, thanks so much for taking the time to respond. 🙌🏼
Any time!
Such an easy guide to follow. Thank you for this simple and easy video.
Glad it was helpful! I'll be doing a lot ore videos on Hallstatt soon
Fantastic Video! We spent 2 nights there in June and it is absolutely breathtaking and lots to see. The ice caves were worth the climb.
Linda Woodard That’s not a climb to the ice cave. It’s a nice walk
BigBoyTravel I’m austrian, I was there yesterday and it was beautiful! You’re saying the truth
Vielen dank!
I did a day tour from Vienna possibly the most beautiful experience in my life
Hallstatt is my favorite place. I always go there.. even if im alone.. i go there like 5-8 times in a year. Its like my vacation home.
Vielen dank! GenauI, Hallstatt ist wunderbar!
beata te , you are lucky to be near a place so beautiful
Amazing clip with many little details coverd. You have made my trip easier and managed to save some $$ for souvenirs . 1000 Thanks
Best vlog about Hallstatt ,thank you for sharing!
Excellent, liked and subscribed your channel, very helpful information you shared. I am planning to visit first week of July, I will be in Vienna last week of June. Cheers. 👍
Big thanks for watching and subscribing! Glad it was helpful. Hope to have one more Hallstatt video out still in June
@@Bigboytravel Great, any tips where we can stay in Hallstatt ? Would appreciate any properties you could recommend ?
This video is very good. Very useful detail. I'm planning for a trip to Vienna this May. This video helps me a lot. and I have already subscribed! :-)
Thank you for subscribing, I wont have new videos covering Vienna until later this year so let me know if you have questions, there is also a large Vienna section on our website
BigBoyTravel I’ll check it, thanks 🙏
THIS VIDEO WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL :)
Thank you Brandon
Hey fantastic job man! Very informative. Your guide helps me travel to this beautiful place without any problem, I owe you one :)
Such a beautiful place. The Sound of Music tour in Salzburg will take you there.
The only Sound of Music specific tours I know of that go into the Salzkammergut go to the church in Mondsee, however, a combo day would be wonderful
This is a very informative video. Thank you.
Found it very helpful and clear!
Glad to hear it was helpful
Great guide. Very informative and just the right amount of detail!
I hope to make that trip in December. Any changes in recommendation then? Are the salt mines and the ice caves open then?
thanks for watching! I assume you are planning on going this December 2024?
While the Ice Cave will be closed, the Salt Mine and lift up to the Sky Walk will be open every day of December. The Salt Mine only closes for around a month from mid-Jan to mid-Feb each year but is otherwise open basically every day
there is a slim chance that weather could alter the bus schedule, but heavy snow isn't common at the village level in December. We always recommend double checking the current schedule closer to your visit dates at www.oebb.at/en
Was there a week ago. Stunning to say the least.
glad you loved Hallstatt, it really is stunning

See you at there on Oct this year 😍
Hi this video is really helpful. Is there any way to take the bus also for the entire journey back?
Yes, you can follow the same route back to return to Salzburg by bus
Gold info for travelers! Thank you!!
Thanks for the kind words! We have another hallstatt video coming out I the next few days
Amazing detail, super helpful. You have given us the confidence to give it a go. Cheers.
Have fun in Hallstatt!
Meravigliosa Austria!
Infatti, bellissimo!
Nice video love it greetings from sri Lanka
Top of my bucket travel.list
there are so many amazing places in central Europe, but we are glad that you added Hallstatt to your list as it really is awesome
I love Hallstatt.
Thank you for sharing about your journey
This was fantastic, keep up the good work!
@@Bigboytravel Thank you very much for the information. ❤
Awesome video. Thanks for posting this. I will use this trip next time Im in Austria.
Thank you so much for this video! It's amazing. So I wouldn't need to buy the tickets for the bus beforehand?
We have always bought them from thr driver but you can definitely buy either from thr www.oebb.at/en website or the ticket machines ahead of time.
If you buy ahead of time make sure to put in Hallstatt Lahn as the destination to force the bus option as the preferred. Since you'll probably want the earlier bus instead of just winging it it can make sense to buy ahead (especially with a group) but isn't required nornally
This makes my life so much easier THANK YOU
Any tips on places to stay in hallstatt?
That can be tricky as there arent many options and it fills up fast. There are 3 great hotels (Gasthofs) on our free walking tour guide near market square that are wonderful and Grüner Baum is out favorite. www.bigboytravel.com/europe/austria/hallstatt/freewalkingtour/
The Krippenstein Alpine Lodge up Dachstein Mountain near the hallstatt ice cave and 5 fingers is also amazing to stay at.
Great comprehensive guide :-)
If we are going from Hallstatt to Brataslava would you go to Vienna and then over to Brataslava or do they have trains going directly to Brataslava? We are staying there for 3 days and will be spending one day in Vienna so it will not be important to see this on the way. Thank you
Hey Tanner, yes you'll transfer to go west-east in Attnang-Puchheim and will have to transfer again in Vienna to Bratislava. In most cases you just have the one transfer at Wien HBF but check on www.oebb.at/en for the options on the day you need. It is a staggering 5-6 hours usually
Amazing video !!
Justo lo que estaba buscando, muy bien explicado.
Muchas gracias.
This video is brilliant! Thanks for such an informative video! :)
@@Bigboytravel thank you for the in-depth answer! Really appreciate it :)
is this still accurate? amazing video. I'm much less scared! Thank you
Yep, still accurate 😀
We will be back there again in a few months
Yes still accurate for 20th year in a row, was just there yesterday
Very informative and detailed video
Thank you for sharing this video BBT . This is helpful for our trip to Hallstatt ...so detailed make planning easier... liked and subscribed ❤️
thank you for watching and subscribing, more videos on Hallstatt are coming soon
Very informative. Excellent.
Beautiful ❤ Is the $15 Euro bus fare all the way to Hallstate from Sulzburg even with bus changes? And The Salzburg bus station that you mentioned same as Salzburg HBF? Thanks in advance.
And the Gosaumuhle but stop after Bad Goisern or before as my hotel will be in Bad Goisern for my trip in 2 weeks.
Yes the ticket is based on continous ride (even with transfers) in the zone. So you can ride all the way to Hallstatt Lahn or the Ice Cave visitors center without paying for an extra ticket. And yes, Salzburg HBF
Correct those stops are also covered by the bus ticket.
Hi, Is it possible to go to Salzburg from Hallstatt by bus, for example, Hallstatt Lahn (Bus 543), Bus-542 then Bus 150(Salzburg)
Yes, just follow this guide in reverse starting from thr Hallstatt Lahn bus stop all the way to Salzburg. Current timetables for your specific days are available on the official Austrian website www.oebb.at/en.
So from hallstatt to Salzburg by bus are the exact same steps but in reverse?
Yep
Beautiful!
Amazing video and helped a lot. Thank you very much
thank you for watching!
Which bus I need to take to go back to Salzburg?
you will follow the route in reverse using the same exact buses or can ferry across the lake and trake the train with one connection. I have a guide with interactive map on my website here www.bigboytravel.com/europe/austria/hallstatt/gettingtohallstatt/
GREAT VIDEO!!!! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
wonderful.
A no non-sense video. Thank you!
You're welcome and thank you for watching
It was a great information. Thanks
quick questions: my friend and I want to stay a day or two in Hallstatt to truly appreciate it and then go onto Vienna.
We are planning to go from Salzburg to Hallstatt on a Sunday in March. Does anybody know what time the last bus/train is out of Hallstatt on a Sunday?
Hey Liam, it should be just a few minutes past 6pm from Hallstatt Lahn. You can peek at thr schedule on the official Asutrian website www.oebb.at/en now and then make sure to check again during your visit. March is usually very pleasant however there is always a slight chance of snow/ice altering the bus schedule. Expect it to feel firmly like spring time at the lake/village level
@@Bigboytravel appreciate it thanks
Thanks !
very useful & informative...
Nice video. Can we buy bus ticket from obb website or obb app and show to driver in bus. Any insight would help.
Yes you can buy from OBB and we suggest using thr app to make it easier and then the driver will scan your ticket (or at least glance at it)
Thanks for this information. It helps. Looking forward for more beautiful videos like these. 🎉
@@Bigboytravel can I buy all 6 tickets on my phone and show the driver?
Also, I saw on OBB there is a day ticket for 31.8 euro which if I understand correctly....I can take any bus or train anytime of the day, isn't that correct? I want to buy for 6 of us on my app, is that ok? cuz some are elderly 70 yr olds who doesn't use the app on phone
I bought my return train ticket to hallstatt. Can i take bus also instead of train.
@@BigboytravelJust wanted to say thanks again for such an informative video and helpful comments! Completed the Salzburg to Hallstatt trip via bus there and back 2 days ago and couldn’t have done it without you sir. Excellent content 😁👍
