To minimize dead air space, place a dense blanket (wool is best) over the top of the food- this prevents the entire cooler being exposed when opening the lid for one item. Just lift the corner of the blanket. Also, place food in painters buckets (available at hardware stores) this protects against wetting from melted ice better than ziplock bags which can leak.
I got the 55 qt a few months ago and I love it. Under a hundred bucks and made in the USA. I'm gonna get the 77 quart next week and give the 55 to my sister

Mos the self serve, free standing ice houses have block as well as bagel ice or make your own the size you need. I use quart milk jugs and the bottles like above. I made a shelf, half length of the cooler, to keep some food products off the floor of the cooler, the waterproof stuff can sit under and beside, in the water, if open b ice is used. The fridge will not get the drinks pre-chilled to the best potential. Put the drinks in a separate, heavily iced water bath with some rock salt for a total least 30 minutes, an hour is great, while you pre cool your cooler with dry ice. An old bartenders trick. The fridge will hit around 45 for cans, if your lucky, right at freezing in anew ice bath. KEEP THE OUTSIDE OF COOLER COOL... Go to the home improvement store and buy a water heater insulation blanket and a roll of aluminum tape. A small investment for a large reward. Cut a top sheet and four sides and tape the parts so that you have a proper sized "cozie" (not coozie, that's some new-aged word. There were cozies made for tea pots and such many years before some marketing idiot called it a coozie). It's a slip cover for your cooler. Foam board is destroyed too easily. Whenever you aren't actually opening the cooler, keep the cover on it. You'll be amazed at how much longer your ice keeps when using these tips, especially when it's really hot and humid. Humidity is a big issue it helps leach off the cold by air contact with the cooler. Georgia is tough on coolers. For storage, the "cozi"e cover of your efforts fits into the cooler when not in use. By doing as advised in this video, combined with my tips, I've kept my old, cheap (relatively) Igloo 90qt. marine cooler functioning for a week, easy, even in 90°, 60% humidity Georgia days. My lifetime 28 is amazing! The only thing it lacks is tie down points we can utilize even when we are opening and closing! But it’s made in America and it’s fantastic!

Out of the sun is pretty obvious but the wind on a hot day just as bad if not worse. Sometimes i see coolers on receiver hitch racks on the backs of cars.
I've done it on my Jeep since the 77 quart won't fit inside. It stayed cold until I got home 3 days later. The frozen water bottles were still completely frozen.
Prior to longer camping trips I usually freeze milk jugs full of water instead of having to buy blocked ice. Limits the amount of water in bottom of cooler.
I'll give lifetime coolers a great review, I've had the 28 size cooler for 2 years almost and it has been used weekly in the truck at work and on the boat it holds ice very well and is tough.
If you put bubble wrap on top of the ice it will help also fill your cooler completely full. You can use empty water bottles on top so when you open the cooler less are can escape.
Frozen gallon jugs of water are a great alternative to block ice, which is really hard to find.. You also get really cold drinking water. There's this stuff that's 1/4" thick closed cell foam with a shiny aluminized layer on both sides. I don't remember what it''s called. I glued two pieces together and cut it to fit about halfway into the cooler.. I also glued another piece to the underside of the lid. I would have used two, but it was all I had.
The one problem with Lifetime coolers is that they don't come with or even offer dry goods trays or baskets, not even as a separate purchase. major flaw. You guys, please give us these, they are really necessary!

Not being smart or nothing, BUT, if you need to go thru all that...... why not just take along a refrigerator and be done. Seriously, a cooler is a cooler. It's really redundant to go thru all that.... just buy more ice,...... or....... take along a Kenmore 25.... with optional cubed or crushed ice.
They make portable fridges for cars, but unless you have a portable power station or dual battery setup it's not going to work. The portable frigs are also expensive.
Takes me 2 full days to get to my ultimate crown land getaway. Once paddled/portaged in, the last thing I want to do is to have to go buy ice. That'd be a full day trek to the nearest ice store. Yes, I like my beer that much. But seriously, not everyone car camps.

I throw my yeti cooler bag in my chest freezer before using all the time, makes a huge difference. I also usually store my regular coolers in the basement. It’s more efficient starting off with a 50-55 degree cooler than a 90+ degree cooler in my garage.

How is that cooler working at keeping items cold and ice retention now, 3 years later?
I’ve had one for 4 years now and it’s starting to lose retention. But it’s been pretty solid up until this summer.
My lifetime 28 is amazing! The only thing it lacks is tie down points we can utilize even when we are opening and closing! But it’s made in America and it’s fantastic!

I use water bottles, I also took a piece of installation and cut it to go inside the cooler. I use it on top of my frozen foods.

Instead of dry ice, fill soda bottles with a mixture of pink RV antifreeze (non toxic) and water and put in a deep freeze. Acts as an ice extender.
