  • From convertible couches to décor and artwork that hide medical equipment to expanded family rooms, the new Florida Hospital for Women in Orlando will be tailored to the modern woman. Over the last year, Florida Hospital staff - from physicians and nurses to nutritional services and housekeeping - have given key insight on the design of the new women’s hospital, and this week they were able to view the results as Florida Hospital debuted mock patient rooms.
Slated to open late next year, rooms at Florida Hospital for Women will be spacious and have plenty room for family and loved ones to visit, and even spend the night. Rooms will include a sofa that converts into a bed, has a foldout table for families to share a meal, use for workspace, or display baby pictures. The new hospital will truly be a destination for women of all ages, and will include features such as the only milk depot in Central Florida and the High Risk Breast Center.
One of the considerations Florida Hospital took in designing the new building is women with high risk pregnancies, who often spend a month or more in the hospital. Often, these patients miss out on the simple joys of pregnancy, such as a baby shower. That’s why there will be gathering areas for patients and families to come together with their friends and loved ones for celebrations. Additionally, a balcony will allow high-risk patients to step out of their rooms and get fresh air while still remaining close to medical care.
Florida Hospital for Women is designed to be a soothing environment and great efforts are being made to make patients feel at home. Much of the medical equipment one might expect to see in a hospital is concealed behind headwalls, which were created to be an artistic piece that adds light and beauty to the room, giving the room a less clinical feel but still allowing nurses to have easy access to essential items. Small touches like customizable lighting and temperature and “Mom’s Sleeping - Do Not Disturb” signs will help to make a hospital stay less stressful.
The 12-story, 332-bed hospital facility will lead the way in a new era of women’s health and offer comprehensive services including: obstetrics, maternal fetal medicine (high-risk obstetrics), gynecologic oncology, minimally invasive women’s surgery, neonatal intensive care, digital mammography, women’s cardiovascular, and wellness and education.
Three years ago, Florida Hospital announced a renewed commitment to women’s services that will span across Central Florida with three new buildings and additional services. Celebration Health Women’s Institute and Florida Hospital for Women at Winter Park Memorial Hospital are already caring for patients. The final building, Florida Hospital for Women at Florida Hospital Orlando, is scheduled to open in 2015. In addition, Florida Hospital recently re-designed and expanded the offerings at the Baby Place at Florida Hospital Altamonte.
