Don’t think there’s one Irish person over 35 who doesn’t remember the excitement of this era - RIP Jack!! A part of Ireland’s sporting history forever!!
youngpupful 1990 was the first time we ever really had it though wasnt it the atmosphere around that world cup was something else jesus i was only a nipper and i can remember it some craic it was
+youngpupful I was only born in 86', so I can only vaguely recall the world cups of the early 90s, but I remember them fondly. I think that those years were special because there was an optimism present that seems to no longer be. The country was starting to be a place where a young person could find work and not be faced with the prospect of emigration or unemployment. Also, the greed and banality of the celtic tiger years had yet to bite. It was perfect brew of different things that made the 90s the best decade of all :)
+malicant123 I have to disagree with you that the 90s were the best decade of all! I was a teenager in the 80s and they were the BEST years! We had the BEST films and music! Nobody had anything, there was very little money around, but it didn't matter! We had lots of good, innocent fun. I feel sorry for the kids of today growing up with their smartphones and "labels" - I'd have hated to grow up in times that were tainted by materialism. I remember running round in 99p runners from Penneys and thinking I was the business!
R.I.P. The biggest legend in Irish football history. Transformed a country and supplied so many magnificent memories that will never be forgotten. See ya big fella.
Who's shedding tears tonight? Hm...I never thought I'd be crying over a man I never met at 53 year of age...RIP Jack, you gave our country confidence, optimism and happiness - at a time when nothing else could.
cynderfan2233 I'd like to hear you're thoughts on how this was borrowed from Scotland. Obviously it's sampled from horslips dearg doom, which itself samples another irish song called o Neills march
John Devereux The scots borrowed the song O Neills march, then mixed it up and added lyrics, creating the song "Ally's Army". The Irish then took that version and changed the lyrics. That's how it was borrowed from Scotland.
You were part of our childhood. Great memories running around the estate, proudly waving our Irish flag, all the car horns beeping at us. Faces painted green white and orange. Oh the excitement we felt during those times. Special times. Never to be forgotten. All I can say is, “Give it a lash” up there for us all dear Jack. ⚽️🇮🇪 🍻 #WeWereAllPartOfJackiesArmy
I love this song. What a team! that team from Euro 1988 and Worldcup 1990...one step from the semifinals twice! what an envy! not possible for México yet...maybe never :(
I remember being in a night club in New Jersey a few years ago and they played this as last song every night. Americans couldn't understand why the whole place went mental and everyone up on shoulders screaming. Was brilliant
Seeing English and Irish flags flying together at Jack's funeral was such a powerful scene. What that man did for Ireland can never be underestimated. A cultural hero and a legend.
I was too young for Italia 90, but hopefully we can get another moment like it. Watching the sheer joy people experienced during Italia 90 always brings a tear to my eye. I think every country in the world deserves their own Italia 90 kind of moment, a moment where everybody is galvanised by a belief and pride in your nation.
Just the music you know Irish and I’m proud and one day we will win and bring it home for you Jackie :) we are all apart of your army and forever in your dept
Hard to believe this is 25 years ago. I remember singing that song the entire summer holidays while I was in Donegal with my cousins. Even when I got back to London, I remember loads of people flying Irish flags and singing "Olé olé olé!" Happy day :)
+Clinton O'Shea Was brilliant, I was only 4 back then and i can remember the tv being moved into the garden because the weather was fantastic and the whole family around for for the Ireland games.
For his family deepest condolences. He was one of a kind, and a kind one. His life and work touched thousands, but none more than his family who will miss him most. Goodnight Jack.
Will these days ever be seen again with a song like that. I'd like to think so but I doubt it. RIP Jack thanks for the childhood memories growing up to these magical moments. Thank you and no one can take those memories away u gave us. God bless
