    I forgot to mention two things: one is the price. I only paid $160 for this switch sans power supplies, although there are sellers out there now selling it for $170 with dual psus. Also, if you end up with one that doesnt have PSUs, get a cheap FEX with power supplies (2248TP or 2232PP) as they use the same power supply and are often cheaper than buying the PSUs by themselves.
    Second: upgrades to NX-OS are sadly locked behind having a support contract with Cisco. So dont expect to be upgrading to the latest firmware when you receive your switch. If the firmware is not functional after following the steps above, I would opt for a return/replacement from the seller.

      Ive been missing you vids man. Recently i got 4 3750 X switches from work with stacking cables and power stacking cables. Ive managed to update it to the latest Cisco IOS. I have access to the downloads also for Nexus hardware so hit me up if you need anything.

      Does this switch have the sticker of "Country of origin USA?"

    I like the overkill-ness idea of a switch like that in a home...looking forward to more videos about ideas for using more of that 120 watts worth of layer 2 power!

      I really need to measure its actual power draw during usage. Im only using like 12 ports on it right now so it should be somewhat under 120w

      There is no such thing as overkill having a toy like that at home.....its cheap, so whats overkilled about it?

    Thanks for this video mate, now I had a friend of mine who had experienced the nexus switch he has worked with, stacked on ID, and did not normalize at all. Power cycling could not help either. Do you have any idea what could be a suspected issue that cause such?

    BE CAREFUL WHEN SWITCHING THE FANS AROUND! The idea is to create a vaccum inside the switch by pushing air out of the back, which then draws cool air in through the front holes in the front of the switch, where the air conditioning is traditionally set to blow cool air through the front of a rack and out the back.

    Do you have to chose the image on all Cisco l3 switches? or this only for the NX-OS on the Nexus line? I'm asking because I'm going to buy the SG350X brand new as my first ever l3 switch with good featuers for a good price for warranty on a e-shop.
    And congrats on that awesome Data center Switch, I'm drooling in envy. And what do you use the UCS server for?
    I'm guessing changing the any hw(changing the direction of the FANs) that comes from cisco is breach of warranty?
    Please do a tour of your other Nexus switches and explain what you use them for and so on,I'm really interested in Cisco DC hw and generally DC servers so a intro of it would be awesome.
    Also would you recommend a Cisco ASA rackmount 5500 series firewall? I want to learn about Cisco firewalls aswell in the future,but the Gb firewalls costs so much,even the Fast Ethernet firewalls is like 200-300 Euros.

      Wow thats a lot of questions! First I am faaaaar from a Cisco expert. From what I have seen their switch lines are divided into 3 groups: Catalyst, Nexus, and SG. SG is their small business line that have their own OS that is unique from IOS or NX-OS. Catalyst are their enterprise stuff that runs IOS. Nexus is datacenter hardware running NX-OS, which has a lot of similarities to IOS, and has support for datacenter centric services like fibre channel. If you are wanting to advance yourself professionally I would focus on IOS based devices (meaning a Catalyst switch) as ive heard the CCNA test primarily focuses on IOS.
      The UCS device at the top of my stack is a 6120xp Fabric Interconnect. Its the "brains" of a UCS environment. Right below that is a 2232PP Fabric Extender for hooking C-series servers up to the UCS environment. Right now I have 2 C200 M2s and a C240 M3 that Im planning on adding to the rack with a video in the not too far future. The C200s will replace my R710 as a pair of redundant Hyper-V hosts and the C240 will replace my FreeNAS whitebox build. I plan on doing a whole video on UCS, the benefits, and why Im pursuing it with my lab at a later date.
      As far as warranties go, Cisco probably wouldnt appreciate the little fan mod. Then again Im hacking up old datacenter hardware that I got for pennies on the dollar and Ive done MUCH worse than this mod (ua-cam.com/video/4NuNKhCQEro/v-deo.html).
      Regarding an ASA 5500 I have no experience with them. From a spin through some datasheets it looks like anything over a 5520 would handle anything you threw at it (up to 1gb). Im virtualizing pfSense for my firewall at the moment and am actually pretty happy with that setup.
      Fortunately old DC gear is really cheap in the states as even with the 3 servers not yet in the rack I have less than $1500 into my lab currently. The 3048TP only cost me $160. Ive heard horror stories on r/hardwareswap about pricing in Europe.

      Thanks for the fast reply.
      I'm going after the R&S CCENT,CCNA,CCNP so I can learn basic and advanced networking features both professionally and so I can deploy it with my home network. I like the idea of adding certain features I learn,either from videos,reading or education in my home network so I can expand my knowledge and so forth because I really enjoy networking and Cisco gear.
      I have a Cisco Catalyst 2960 fast ethernet 48port switch that I can play with, but I havent gotten around to it because I have been in the planning and buying phase for over 6months now.
      its really hard for me to find a Catalyst switch because there are so many different switch models and I havent started on the Cisco education yet. I will also buy a Cisco R&S lab for CCNP.
      But I was thinking of buying Catalyst switches to use as Core switch that is Gbit ports,but I need a steady job to spend money.
      I cant wait to watch the UCS series.
      Thanks for the tip on the Cisco ASA 5520. I also want a pfsense firewall,but i also want to build my network infrastructure around Cisco,but I have watched lawrence computers on pfsens and it seems like a really good choice, I was thinking eventually of buying the XG-7100 since its the cheapest rackmount device.
      Are you gonna invest in a rack console for the servers? or do you do all remotely?
      are you planning on getting a terminal server so you can use multiple Putty sessions? or SuperPutty?
      Thats great news for you tho regarding the DC hw, maybe I can learn something,but here in Europe everything is expensive and hard to come by so we are basically forced to buy at ebay.co.uk.

    • @Taylordtech

      You dont need an ASA 5520 to go for your CCNP. Most guys get 2-3 2811s and 2-3 2960s or 3750s. Theres no difference (as it pertains to study prep) between fast ethernet and gigabit devices, so go for older/cheaper stuff if budget is an issue.
      If you want to actually use it...well just remember that 1gb is still the standard in the business world for distribution switches so they are going to be pricier.
      Also...please please please dont spend $1000 on that netgear crap. For real. Either do a whitebox build or get an old rackmount server (the Dell R210 ii is really popular for this). Especially if you are doing gigabit or less anything with more than 2 cores and 4gb of RAM is serious overkill. An old R210 is going to be cheaper (ebay.co.uk has them for about 200 pounds), easier to upgrade, more reliable (probably) and a LOT more versatile.
      I will probably get a cheapo $10 17" panel and put it on a shelf by my rack as a "poor mans KVM", but wont invest in a stand-alone console. UCS has built in network KVM functionality, and the Dell servers (what I am using for pfSense right now) have cheap expansion modules (iDRAC enterprise) that add network KVM function. I dont really see the need myself. The same principal applies to running a terminal server. I dont have THAT big of a lab yet and Im the only one using it. The only time I really have to haul a console cable out something has gone oh-so-very wrong and a terminal sever wouldnt help me at that point!!
      Good luck to you on your learning journey! Ill try to keep the content fresh and relevant (hell who knows, maybe Ill get my CCNA for kicks as part of the channel). Look for the UCS stuff in a month or so. I have a few other pieces of content I want to get done before I tackle it.

      I just want to fiddle with and have some experience with Cisco ASA firewalls, I know that it doesnt have anything with the R&S cert.
      Thanks for the tip on the netgate advice firewall,but is it that bad?
      That could work,a thin 17" inch monitor on a shelf,but it takes up alot of space tho.
      the terminal server is just something I kinda see useful when buying a CCNP R&S lab because I'm aiming for 3 switches and routers.
      I'm the only 1 who is gonna use the lab myself,but I really enjoy having Cisco gear and having a lab in the future to test scenarios with is good for learning how enterprise networks works and certs.
      if you are going for the CCNA,do CCENT first since its required unless you already have that certification.

    Was the second switch a FEX? and what would be the main differences between it and the new 3048TP.

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  6 років тому +1

      Yep, it's a 2232PP. I imagine since you know what a FEX is you know the difference!
      Basically a FEX is a way to extend a Nexus switch. It's dumb and has no switching capacity on its own. So as the name implies, it EXTENDS a Nexus switching FABRIC.
      In this case I'm using it to attach C-series servers to my 6120xp.

    • @eyevo3328
      @eyevo3328 6 років тому +1

      Taylord Tech I thought the fex only worked with the nexus 5K and up? How will you use the Fex?

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  6 років тому +1

      It's actually just the n5k and n7k series. The 2232pp also works with UCS Fabric Interconnects, but only for connecting C-series UCS servers to a FI.
      That's what I'm using my FEX for.

    Can you give us a power readout with a watt meter? I am interested in getting something like this but i am concerned for power since my R720Xd's only pull 130 W. Love the videos keep up the great work!
