      Bengali being #RealMagic
We have never given an inch to claim our rights. Every time there was an obstacle, we moved in protest. And one of the means of that protest was our mass music.
The song Hey Samalo is a living document of the awakening of people's durbar, of getting their rights. This song written by Salil Chowdhury about the Tevaga movement of such deprived people in 1946-1948.
Protest begets another protest. And so in 1952, the ruling group, who had hurt our language, stood against it. That's when Abdul Latif's immortal creation 'Ora Amar Mukha Katha' was born. That timeless song when the small band of Bandarban created strange magical tunes on their own flutes. Added to this is the Raibeshe war dance which is one of the oldest folk dances.

This medley is about the struggles that shaped modern Bengal, we call these Gana Sangeet or Mass awakening songs. Bengal and Bengalis have been at the forefront of popular revolutionary movements within the subcontinent. This is irrespective of which side of the border Radcliffe pushed them into. The song "Hey Samalo Dhan" literally translates to " Protect your paddy". This song was penned and composed by the great Salil Chowdhury, a member of the IPTA, cultural wing of the Communist Party, who also happened to be a very popular music director of Bombay film industry. I am sure you have heard many songs composed by him eg Zindagi kaisi Hain paheli, Dil Tadap tadap ke, O sajna barkha bahar ayi, aye mere pyare watan to name a few.Tebhaga movement, as you correctly mentioned, was a direct consequence of the British imposed Bengal famine. This pushed the peasents to get themselves organised under the banner of the Krishok Sabha (Peasents' Union) of the Communist Party and pushed the last nail in the coffin of the British Empire. It's impact was felt across undivided Bengal and many historians argue that this helped in elevating mass consciousness of the common people. This continued in West Bengal as the massive "Food movement" against the incumbent government of the 50s where several peasents were killed by police action.
As for the language and Bangladesh movement, you are spot on. However, the essence of the song captures the spirit of resistance of Bengalis, as a whole. We are lucky that unlike Punjabis, we have been able to maintain good relationship with our brethren across the border. It is easy to visit Bangladesh and India and millions do it each year, leading to massive cultural exchange. This has been captured by Coke Studio too. Many artists from Indian West Bengal have performed in Coke Studio Bangla. Soumyadeep Murshidabadi, Sunidhi Nayek, Madhubanti Bagchi are from West Bengal. Even Arnob, Ripon "Boga" have studied from Shantiniketan in West Bengal, the university established by Rabindranath Thakur.
So this is a not a patriotic song per se, it does not eulogise the nation, but speaks of legitimate struggle of the common people of mighty Bengal.

For us as Bengalis, we structure our sense of identification more like the French than anyone else. For us language is not just a pillar of our identity it is the whole basis of it. Without the Bengali language there is no Bengali people. Much of our tradition is orally transmitted as the song describes. And to institutionally stifle it like it was in 1952, is to kill our collective consciousness as a people group.

This is a really good comparison! It'd never occurred to be me before. The ethno-linguistic identity of the Bengalis is truly something unique in the subcontinent; what a shame that we have been divided the way we have been.

Only makes sense to break the two strongest arms of India, Bengal and Punjab. These were the two wealthiest provinces when the British arrived and later gave them a lot of grief during the freedom struggle. And, of course, it was part of destroying the overall Economic Bloc that the Indian subcontinent would have been otherwise.

The tune and the flute-like instrument played in the beginnings is from the indigenous "Mro" community.

And the oral drum syllables "jhaur ghijar ghija ghinita" part is spoken out loud during Raibeshe performance, which is a folk martial art form, originally from the pre-partition Bengal.
Both of these songs were and are sung as "gono shongeet". Not sure what the translation should be for this, but "gono shongeet" are the songs that speak of our courage and bravery which are played to inspire people during difficult times. These two songs highlight Bengali's strength and resilience in the face of oppression. You have tackled our bitter history honestly which is much appreciated.

Well, I have met many Pakistanis and believe me no one has any idea about 21st February or Mother Language Day. Honestly I was never surprised about it because it was obvious.
So personally I want to thank you and show my humble gratitude towards you guys as 21st February is a very important day for Bengalis. Bengal has always been underrated, I think there was no other province like Bengal in the Indian subcontinent as rich in terms of art, music, cinema, literature and science. Unfortunately separation of Bengal was a Mistake. End of great culture and history That's all!

Hammad and Haris - Guys great job yet again. It’s unfortunate that they created issues with having the video. You have both done such a great job of promoting bangla music that this is not what I would expect the copyright owners to do.
Regardless, as I said, great job yet again. You are completely right that this track is just more about the lyrics and context and history. Personally I always like it when things are modernized but I guess this not one of those tracks.
The history and context you bring into your discussions takes your commentary to another level. I think we all recognize that this takes effort so thank you for doing that. Also, you set the bar so high that when we (or at least I) check out any other reaction and there is no thought or effort or research I’m just like wtf, why even bother. Tevaga revolution is a very part of our history. But in 1952 Language movement is the most important historical movement for us. We called it 'Shok theke Shakti'. Means language movement was a very tragic incident for every Bangladeshi people but they made the sadness to their power, towards the independence.

People of Bengal region has suffered unbelievable level of injustice since British stepped in, till Pakistan left. The worst thing that happened to us, was on 14 December 1971, when our brightest minds were murdered by Pakistani army, so that we remain crippled forever. 900+ of them were University professors. Imagine how many scholars, these teachers could produce. Even if I try to forgive Pakistan, this one incidence stops me. It shaped our future.
We lost the people who could guide us during resurrection from ashes. We could have developed much faster, our society would be free of violence and extremism. I can't wish well for Pakistan when it never apologises for its past actions.

I remember reading about the guy who first designed the prototype of the Bengali keyboard... turns out he was killed in 14th of December in 1971. Just think of the people we lost, think of the kickstart we would have had if we had our best and brightest leading us.

@@rowen5435 This is an unprecedented act of vindictiveness. At least I never came across any other example of this targeted planned murder of intellectuals in human history. There are more brutal genocide, but that is indiscriminate. They just engage in mindless killing. Nowhere else the oppressor wanted to ensure that the future of a nation gets jeopardised. So it is only befitting punishment of fate that Pakistan itself is destabilised, the way its army envisioned our future.

In 1948, the Government of Pakistan declared Urdu to be the sole national language of Pakistan, even though Bengali or Bangla was spoken by the majority of people combining East Pakistan and West Pakistan. The East Pakistan people protested, since the majority of the population was from East Pakistan and their mother language was Bangla. They demanded Bangla to be at least one of the national languages, in addition to Urdu. The demand was raised first by Dhirendranath Datta from East Pakistan on 23 February 1948, in the constituent Assembly of Pakistan.
To demolish the protest, the government of Pakistan outlawed public meeting and rallies. The students of the University of Dhaka, with the support of the general public, arranged massive rallies and meetings. On 21 February 1952, police opened fire on rallies. Abdus Salam, Abul Barkat, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar and Shafiur Rahman died, with hundreds of others injured. This was a rare incident in history, where people sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue.

Not everything is about chest thumping all the time to portray passion or such. The lyrics in these songs are enough to give us 1000 volt shocks; to stir up our senses as a nation, regardless of the instruments. One has to be born into the culture to wholly comprehend.

On the same note, in international affairs terminology, partition is not the same as liberation. The Indian subcontinent was liberated from the British Raj, but Pakistan (both parts) was born out of partition from India ( not liberation). And finally, Bangladesh again was LIBERATED from Pakistan in 1971. Why are these concepts termed this way, what's the difference? You got Google to educate you if you really want to. But I have a good sense that you will continue to make the same mistake.

only Bengalis are the indigenous of bengal. The rest are small ethnic groups, most of them were expelled by the Myanmar king and took refuge in Bengal. They are called indigenous only by the international media because they want to see a rebel group in a geographically important region like Chittagong.
some of my fellow bengali call them indigenous ,cause they are unwary of the fact or they have no idea what they are talking about.

Kind of true. Some are indigenous, many are not. Notice how that's why they used the word "Nṛigoşhṫhi" and not "Adibashi". And regarding the Rebel groups... if we want the moral high ground with them we cannot ignore the landgrab we did it the 70s and 80s.

I as a Bengali, find it really aweful when we oppress others the same way Pakistan oppressed us. Shame on us. Here, we are celebrating our language and history by denying others' history. Our ancestors never lived in chittagong hill tracts. We Bengalis have always been people of plain. Paharis are indigenous to their land. Even if the govt doesnot give them indigenous status for purpose of controlling separatism, we as individuals have no right to unnecessarily hurt others

Lastly, one thing I found amusing about your Q & A video, is how you said you are not a nationalist. You questioned the purpose of it, etc. I see! Then would you care to answer Haris, why did you not mention which part of India your ancestors are from, rather emphasize on you being a 3rd generation Karachiite? You know what that sense of belonging to a particular region is called? LOL. It is one thing to declare something and it's another to understand what it is you just declared. If you are still going to insist on not being nationalists, then try ending your videos by saying "Joy Bangla" or " Jay Hind".It should not be an issue because after all, Bangladesh, as you claim, is a region you would love to see flourish and sustain. On the other hand, both Pakistan and Bangladesh emerged from the Indian subcontinent. So, if you are not the one for borders and see no sense in nationalism, prove it in one of your videos. If something within stops you, then half of it is nationalism, half of it is the fear of offending your own people. LOL. It is easy to portray one's self as highly evolved, it is a completely different thing to actually BE it.

Nationalism in fact can be dangerous. Patriotism and Nationalism are different. Rabindranath in one of his essays wrote "I'll never allow nationalism triumph over Humanity as long as I'm alive".
Rabindranath wrote many patriotic songs, "Amar Shonar Bangla", our national anthem, "Aji Bangladesher Hridoy Hote", "O Amar Desher Mati" and many for Bengal and his Bengali song "Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata" is India's national anthem. But humanity was always above anything else.
One thing is being protective of own culture and loving it and another is boasting about it at a cost of humanity, peace or love.

@Amar Kagojpati you're just being wilfully obtuse. When most people say that they're not very nationalistic, they don't mean they don't believe in the idea of nation states. They usually mean that their nationality is not the central part of their identity, that they're willing to rise above it, unlike obnoxious people like you.

Not many BENGALIS in even the greater Bengal today know much or anything about the Tebhaga Movement. You yourself mentioned how this is suppressed; so you could not have known it beforehand either. You googled the information before shooting the video and some probably could even tell when you ran your eyes over the info in front of you. You could have simply admitted that you just got to learn this as there is no harm in it, instead of pretending that you were recollecting history from the top of your heads. And talking about being honest, you said so much about the why and the how of the former, why not one word about how the Pakistani government used to do the same thing as the British Raj, which was to take our resources and send it over to the west? You mentioned Churchill, why not your own leaders? You only admitted that it was unjust, but did not go into how the movement developed and most importantly, the bloodshed we endured. *Slow claps for your level of integrity".

Why would they talk about "their own rulers" when talking about tebhaga? The Bengal famine took place in 1943. Pakistan wasn't created yet. They were talking specifically about the tebhaga movement.
It's like going to a cancer conference and yelling "why aren't you'll talking about AIDS? Isn't AIDS important?"
Of course, it's fucking important. But it is NOT the thing that's being discussed here.

@@doyalgorubaba6727 Aww, are you still trying? That's cute. If you were not in such a rush to play the Fu¢k-ing savior, you would have noticed that this video was a mashup of TWO songs and they too broke down their reaction accordingly. First they reacted to the song on Tebhaga, and then moved onto reacting to the one from '52.
Why would they need to talk about their own rulers while they had mentioned Churchill? Because there is a little thing called INTEGRITY. Tebhaga is not a common topic, '52 comparatively is. They may not know many details, but they could have mentioned at least one key player, again, like Churchill. If anything, they were the ones who were playing it safe and being sleazy when it came down to them.
