Take the Guess Work Out of Natural Hair Care. ~ Facts and, "Not So" Common Sense to Longer, Thicker, Healthier Hair.
Maybe this will help someone. I have had both experiences with coconut oil. Both negative and positive.
If I put it on my scalp, it gets very itchy! But if I avoid my scalp entirely, it's such an amazing prepoo for my hair strands.
It used to feel dry and brittle to my strands if I use it on its own, but then I combine it with water mist and it does the exact opposite, makes my hair super soft.
Last thing, I put it on my hair and give it a little time. This is so helpful because sometimes it just needs a little time to penetrate.
This is helpful … I’ll pin it 💚
It's also good for the skin
This happened to me
Let’s not forget the financial benefits
Coconut oil is one of the few cheap oils most people can afford to buy in bulk
exactly...and you can cook with it, too...
Coconut oil as a pre-poo treatment will make your hair “feel” soft after shampooing. It will also make it easier to detangle before shampooing. But, that’s a short-term benefit from drenching your hair with an excessive amount of oil. This short-term benefit will come with long-term problems. The purpose of shampooing your hair is to get rid of oily/waxy buildup. These “gentle” shampoos are already not strong enough especially if we’re drenching our hair with oil before using them. If you feel like pre-pooing is working for you, great. But, there are other ways to dangle your hair. Your hair drying out so fast is due to PRODUCT/OIL BUILDUP. It’s very important to wash out at least most of the product on your hair and scalp on a consistent basis
First time I've ever heard of putting oil first then water afterwards to properly moisturize. I will try it that way, thanks.
What about coconut oil on your scalp?
Perfectly explained!
Can you please do a video on coconut oil vs fractionated coconut oil? 🥥
I've read that fractionated coconut oil is stripped of lauric acid, the acid that protects the hair from protein loss. If that is true, fractionated coconut oil would be a great alternative for low porosity hair (as we are prone to protein overload). I'm currently avoiding regular coconut oil for this reason but I would consider it in fractionated form.
Thank you! 🙏
A couple years back you used coconut oil as s prepoo, you detangled your hair with it and something acidic then let it sit under a cap before washing.
Thank you for this reminder! During lockdown, I was hard core with my hair regimen, which included coconut oil. As a result my hair flourished. I know it was due, in part, to my dedication. However, coconut oil has been the missing factor in recent times. Again, thank you for sharing both your knowledge and expertise with the masses. I am grateful!😉
It am definitely a part of the cocoNOT crew, but thankful for this video because I now understand WHY my hair responds the way it does to coconut oil. Ends ONLY it is! Thank you QUEEN!
I tried to use coconut oil as a prepoo and realized the hard way that I'm allergic to it. My scalp ended up being inflamed and itchy. Horrible experience. Not only that my hair ended up being severely dried out and brittle. I started to avoid products that listed coconut oil as an ingredient.
Same. My hair and skin absolutely hates coconut oil.
Coconut oil as a prepoo has been a game changer in the health of my hair. It is so much longer whereas before it was alway dry and brittle and would break. Glad I found something that works for me.
how often do you pre poo with it?
@@forebidden every 2 weeks
@@ThePookie25 thanks
What brand do you use ?
@@monie948 it doesn't matter
As long as good quality
I use coconut oil alot on my hair and it has really been nice to my hair 😍
Your video is very timely for me. I was hoping your content on coconut oil would be supportive of my conclusion regarding its use in my hair. I learned, after a year of using products containing coconut oil, that it hates my hair and my hair hates it! So, for the past six or so years, I have avoided any products containing coconut oil. But, about three months ago, I allowed myself to be talked into purchasing the full Blue Tansy line, which I loved the first time I used it. I only used it two additional times, about a month apart for each usage. Both times I noticed, rather than the usual brittle and hard hair result, my hair shed in long strands excessively. I am mortified that I have experienced another setback, due to using coconut oil! So, I have come to the conclusion that, although coconut oil may be formulated differently in these newer products, it can still be quite damaging for those of us, whose hair is allergic to it! 😒
Same hereeee!!! She's so right on time! 💪
My hair loves coconut oil. Different hair likes different things
Thanks for this helpful info, great animations, and easy to understand technical info.
Hi, just wanted to tell you thank you. With your help I finally developed my ideal regimen. I use the leave in plus heavily coat with flaxseed gel then oil it in the morning. I’m so so happy now, thank you.
I comb coconut oil through my hair before a rice water rinse. It was a game changer in being able to use rice water for growth without getting dry hair. I also love the advanced clinicals coconut hair mask. Thanks for explaining the science behind it all :)
Nice 👍🏾 no problem
You are my reference point, guide and expert for any information related to my hair, full stop. I can totally relate to you, your hair type is like mine your skin tone is like mine. Thank your for sharing your knowledge.
I was just fixin to pre poo my hair and I use coconut oil since I started caring for my natural hair.
Green Beauty 🌱 your graphics are always so entertaining & fun! I’ve tried coconut oil in every way, my skin & hair just HATE it! I use olive oil instead.
Use it every day for many years . All love
Im low porosity and im lucky that my hair loves coconut oil. cuz it does amazing work on my hair, For me hair retention is happening only with coconut oil. I have yet to find anything that helps just as much between wash days😁
A little coconut oil on the ends once or twice a month has made detangling a breeze
@@starcherry6814 , I have not used coconut oil 🥥 as an non-pre poo hair treatment. Thanks for the tip. I love ❤️ using coconut oil 🥥 🌴 . It has been a game changer.
@@phalynwilliams4119 That’s great! You only need a little… took months to see length retention. (Keeping it real)
@@starcherry6814 , thanks!
Would love to see the science behind doing away with butters and oils.
She has an older vid on the water only method, just search green beauty water only. Is that what you’re referring to?
@@donnabanks7656 Lol, she means oils and butters in the HAIR.🤭 Like shea butter, cocoa butter, castor oil, etc.
@@donnabanks7656
Girl 😆
No. Shampoo and conditioner is fine. No oils and butters.
All i do now is shampoo, condition and get regular hair cuts to keep my hair as short as possible, i keep my hair under wigs all the time i really dont care about growing it out anymore, its not worth it, especially cos i live in a very humid wet country, i do a cute twistout that takes me hours for the weather to just ruin it, but i still enjoy watching your videos
I am one of those who are not a fan of coconut oil. It just sits there and makes my hair look oily. I love olive oil and castor oils but I will try the clarifying shampoo then the coconut oil to see if it is a build up. It won’t hurt to try. But on my skin coconut oil works wonders. Just not for my face and hair.
I'm back to hair grease and clarifying shampoo I also wash my hair in four twist, after a failed hair regimen at bra strap and loosing clumps...the routine I'm doing now gets my hair washed completely in 15 minutes and moisturized in 15 minutes. I've cut down my time by over 50 percent, less tangles, way less breakage and I don't mind doing it every five days. It use to take an hour just to wash and detangle...not anymore. It'll take three years to get my hair thicker but I got nothing but time.
I used coconut oil before and my hair loved it. At some point, I don’t know why, it started breaking my hair off terribly. I have high porosity hair, btw.
I'm not natural and l ❤ your work.
Thank you 💚
For clarity, are you saying that one should add coconut oil to damp hair and then remist?
I was wondering the same thing. The demonstration word was damp hair, but was wondering if coconut oil goes on first than mist it. I am confused.
Coconut oil makes my hair hair dry and brittle, it was the best prepoo/detangler but I couldn't stand the dryness
Yes. So easily detangled my hair, but my hair improved greatly when i stopped using coconut oil and products containing coconut oil
Me too...and flaky scalp
@@kbs149th same here,I am very keen on getting coconut oil free products
@Beauty In4C could you recommend any cocnut free products? Shea moisture just discontinued the cocoa butter and red palm oil curl strech pudding and i am really at a lost for a moisturizer that doesnt have coconut in it.
Thank you for this video! As usual you explained everything in such detail.
My hair used to like coconut oil when I lived in the US. Now that I live in South America, my hair hates it. I use olive oil instead
That is very interesting. I wonder why that is.
This happened to me too! When I was in the US my hair really loved coconut oil, but now that I’m in East Africa, it’s the most disagreeable thing.😔
Could it be hard water?
@@Leah_Tewari Possibly. There is a lot of iron in the water
I believe it’s the climate. When we look at how coconut responds to different temperatures I think it responds to climate of where we are.
I use coconut oil in tandem with other oils in order to avoid the crunch factor. Coconut milk is great as a mini hair strengthener after washing, and before conditioning.
This video is so right on time, I can't even explain how much you've blessed me. Thank you ❤
Coconut oil goes hand-in-hand with the pre-poo; both have been essential to my hair's health. Still grateful for the informative videos as always though.
My high porosity hair can't go without it.
I use it weekly as a prepoo, coupled with olive oil. I actually use grease as a sealant. It's almost as if the prepoo breaks up my sealant because if I skip prepoo, I notice a difference in washdays. The prepoo causes my hair to literally feel like butter during washday. Which makes it easier to detangle and even my deep conditioner penetrates better. It's amazing.
I also started adding it to my daily oil mix. I did notice when I tried to use it by itself in my LCO step, it made my hair feel weird. I concluded maybe it just hardened on my hair and figured I should add it to my castor/olive mix to keep it liquified. And it worked! Adding it to my daily oil mix causes a conditioning effect on my hair.
I have high porosity hair too. I am doing my pre poo now with: coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil. It helps moisture stay in my hair longer. I like your idea of using coconut oil in the LCO with castor and olive oils. I am going to try that.
@@kathleenharris8824 lol that's funny. I'm warming my prepoo up now. Lol it's washday. I usually prepoo over night but I had too many glasses of wine last night. 😆
I hope you enjoy the oil mix! 😘
I am high porosity and just starting too pre-poo with coconut oil. Thanks for your tips. High porosity hair is such a diva! 😂🤣
@@The.Whoever Thank you! I love the mix. It will be a staple in my weekly routine now.
@@jes4891 I'm happy I could help. And yes, honey. My high porosity 4c hair has taught me how to be a high maintenance queen. 😆
Thank you.pls can you make a video on difference between hair moisturizer and leave in conditioner? New subscriber from Nigeria.
I feel like my hair may be high porosity and my hair loves the moisture that coconut oil gives it.
Jesus loves you he died on the cross for your sins. All you have to do is believe in him and you will be saved. ❤
Sighs.
I would like to thank you for this amazing scientific breakdown on the effects of Coconut 🥥 oil on the hair strand! Brilliant! Brilliant! #MisterWalter
You are the G.O.A.T.
I always look forward to your info. Blessings to you and your family.
This was a great video- QUESTION: I pre pood my dry hair with coconut oil (no water). Ever since then, my hair has been in bad shape. I clarified with Pantene’s sulfate shampoo, still dull lifeless hair. My hair is sooooo dry, even weeks after doing this. I’ve also used chelating shampoos- no big difference. My hair has decreased in density due to breakage/ lifeless hair, and just looks terrible. What do you think happened here?? & how do I fix this??
Yes, a gentle clarifying shampoo and deep conditioner without protein for at least two weeks. The one I am using is Mielle Protein-Free Hydrating Conditioner. Also I’m using PM Awapuhi shampoo. It’s not specifically a clarifying shampoo but it cleans hair of build up very well without stripping completely. Also it’s protein free.
I’m team Like-It. Babassu is better. People still mistake it for protein treatment in some circles.
I have 4 A-Z hair and damn near Asian low porosity., and my hair loves coconut oil. It makes it shiny and helps my hair growth. It also keeps my hair soft and conditioned. HOWEVER…my hair gets filthy very easily even though it is being absorbed it isn’t absorbed immediately. So I do have to wash my hair more often.
For context my hair has been locked 6 years 11 months and I started using coconut oil when my hair was loose. The hair getting dirty thing really only started with my locs I’m guessing because I can’t brush and comb out dirt like with loose hair.
Thank you for your detailed videos
So i have dry scalp, especially during winter, does Coconut oil on the scalp help retain moisture ? Or is it harmful for skin/ scalp ?
My hair HATES coconut oil.
Please can you talk about oils that are good, and oils that are bad for the scalp
As a low porosity gurl, my hair naturally hated coconut oil until I watched so many of your videos I clarified my scalp then I reintroduced coconut oil in my regimen and it loves it. I only use it sparingly, I prefer to use it with other oils also and it works wonderful for me, like in my herbs infused oil it’s the base of my oils
My hair is medium-high porosity & loves coconut oil.
I use either the milk or the pre poo. I have no trouble using it if I wash it out when I use it as a pre poo. Do what works for you right? Well. I'm going to be putting it on my ends cause I'm low porosity. Thanks for the tip.
Right .. you’re hair is beautiful btw 💚
I love coconut oil. I found that if i keep it away from my scalp then it works wonders for my hair.
In my natural hair experience, coconut oil is completely antagonistic to my hair. I found out when I bought some and tried it, and a couple days later I was just rubbing my fingers along the length of my hair and I literally heard an offkey violin sound that's NEVER happened before. I realised it was the problem as opposed to my castor oil I regularly used. I still use it on my skin, but my scalp? Never again. I stick to my beloved castor oil. It nourishes my hair like no other 🥰🥰🥰.
My hair and sclap (skin as well) hates coconut oil. Not sure if I am allergic to it, but I start itching like crazy.
Maybe the type of coconut oil you use play a role. To be sure use the organic unrefined oil. I used coconut oil today self on my hair as a pre-poo after I saw your video. I will see what effect it have I never really have a problem with it.
Good morning Beautiful!!
Team cocoNOT, makes my scalp feel like there’s a gang of mosquitos digging in my scalp. I wanted to love it but my scalp hates it. 🤷🏽♀️ I love avocado oil and grapeseed oil ❤
I don't put raw oil in my hair. Tbh it's not made for that purpose. However it's excellent for your mouth and skin.
I am team no, I really dislike coconut oil. I love olive, jojoba and castor oils they all work for me.
My hair hates coconut oil, as it leaves it literally feeling like straw. I have not used it in yearsss.
Jesus loves you he died on the cross for your sins. All you have to do is believe in him and you will be saved. ❤
Thank you for your informative idea 🙏🏾 I have *low porosity protein sensitive* natural type 4 hair. As much as I thought my hair hated proteins, it responds very well to your *Real Protein Treatment* (which I understand is a smaller molecular size than most so my hair can absorb it better. My hair also hates raw coconut oil so I’ve been avoiding all products containing it but I’d like to try a shampoo that contains *Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamide MIPA* which I am assuming are ingredients derived from coconut? I’m wondering if it might respond better to this form of coconut maybe? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this 🤓
Did you ever try it? Im in the same boat
She never said nothing about making sure the scalp being treated as well , if not with coconut oil .
I do believe a ACV rinse once a month helps with build up .
What do you think about using gloves 🧤 to wash your hair? I find that it is easier and keeps my nails from snagging onto my strands. I followed a tutorial from the gloved natural on UA-cam. I love your videos they are so helpful and informative I appreciate that you are about natural beauty! Thanks 🙏🏽
Good call!! My nails are brittle and I'm always having to file on wash day lol, thank you 😊
I wonder the same thing. I wonder if different types of gloves can cause harm to the hair? I use vinyl gloves when washing because I can't stand the filmy feeling of shampoo on my hand, plus the long exposure to water always breaks my nails. Hopefully, Green Beauty answers.
Off subject but I use your hot oil treatment and it works for my dandruff and dermatitis I recommend it for everybody
I’m so glad I found this channel. Thank you for the informative and practical advice. I know I should be doing all these things but hearing it from someone else with tried and tested evidence gives me the motivation. I’m on Wendy my 100th big chop and this will be my last chop in a long, long time. Thank you!
Hi, could you talk about hydrogen peroxide and baking soda hair dying? If it can be done without damage, if its healthier than bleaching? I love your explanations 🤎🤎
Good point! Thank you! My hair doesn’t seem to like coconut oil BUT I will definitely will try it on my ends to see! 🤞🏽
Low porosity hair checking in and correct, my hair does not benefit from coconut oil. Also, unfortunately I am allergic to it and shea butter (adult onset) so natural products can be a challenge. Old school jheri curl moisturizers to the rescue during winter dryness for me.
Happy Birthday!!! 😘😘
thank you for your help ms
Thank you 🤩
Thank you for sharing
Should coconut oil be used on the scalp or just the hair ?
good evening Greenbeauty. I'm concerned we're currently nearing our winter months. I'm wondering which oil is best to incorporate into my DIY hair products 🤔🤔
Can you Please Please Please talk about desi ghee.
If you do not Hydrate you hair strands at its best hydration than placing coconut oil on your strands is not good idea... Some of us Which at least most of my friends hair I never ever seen their hair have fully reach hydration when use coconut oil they complain that their hair are brittle and strands are breaking. Reason why is simple coconut oil molecule is solid type when cold when warm is melted, the molecule particle blocks moisture in but also no moisture will go in, the coconut oil will stay on strands until you rinse hair so if you are going to use it best your hair reach its best hydration and properly detox no product build up. If you are a person that suffers single strand knots coconut oil could be helpful relaxing the ends of strands for minimal coil tangle.
I only use small amounts of coconut oil in my Ayurveda mixes, to counter the drying effects of the powders. I also mix 1 part coconut oil and 1 part Jamaican black castor oil to seal my twists. My hair doesn't respond positively to more coconut oil than that.
Coconut oil as a prepoo has always been beneficial to me and yes, I stay using a clarifying shampoo. I can’t/won’t use anything else! Lol by the way is Sodium C-14 C-16 olefin sulfonate considered a clarifying ingredient?
Yes it is! It can remove silicones too!
@@cu8414 Thank you.
That is so interesting about the coconut oil. It seems to make the end result of my shampoos better but I don't really use it as a detangler. I detangle my hair before putting on the pre-poo so maybe I should shorten my steps and try using the pre poo as a detangler. I hope I'm not getting a buildup but I like how much more moisturized it is after the shampoo when I pre poo.
Thanks for this video and helpful information (as always). My question had always been: what type of coconut oil works best for natural hair? Just plain coconut oil, virgin coconut oil or extra virgin coconut oil---OR---does it matter? 🤔
💫✨ Have you ever tried organic cold pressed coconut oil? It’s very economical and my hair loves 💕 it as a pre-poo. Also, a little bit goes a long way! 🤗 Depending on the size of my individual twists, I use a dime size or a nickel size, rub it in my hands to get maximum efficacy, and I work it in my hair from tip to root. I put a silk/satin bonnet/scarf on until time to wash… if I let the CO stay in an extra day or two before I shampoo, by the time I remove my bonnet my twists are so soft & supple; very bouncy and well-conditioned. I’m not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I hope something I said here about my experience with ORGANIC COLD PRESSED CO will help you in your search. 😄 I believe the brand I’m using is Spectrum. Best wishes! 💫✨
Good question! I Also wonder the same. At the moment I use refined

I think the difference and why so many people have strong opinions is because some people live in a climate where coconut oil is a liquid, and some people live in a climate where it is a solid
Can your porosity change? And if so, change certain routines?
Your hairs porosity can definitely change for many reasons.
Can you do a video on Fo Ti and the Red Ginseng oil., and Clove oil, Do they really promote fast hair growth? Please advise. I enjoy all of your videos. Thank you for your time, I appreciate.
I'm high porosity and raw coconut oil NEVER worked for me. Not before or after washing. I can use products that have it mixed in but not straight out of the jar.
Please do a video on Sunflower oil and grape seed oil🙇🏾♀️💆🏾♀️🙏🏾
I am so much cocoNOT! Was a problem very hard to identify in my hair regimen, especially because everyone was coconut pro It was counter intuitive.
The only issue is which type to use. The organic cold-pressed type is too thick and smells foody, some processed more fluid brands tend to have a slightly rancid, industrial odour. But that's it. Coconut oil is the only oil for me.
